Virden
Virden is a welcoming community rich in history and rural charm. Elkhorn
The Village of Elkhorn is a wonderful community for all ages, providing a small-town experience within minutes of the larger communities. Located 27km west of Virden along the TransCanada Highway, Elkhorn is home to the Manitoba Antique Automobile Museum where you can witness the evolution of transportation firsthand. Take a stroll through the streets to view the vibrant community murals that tell the story of the town’s rich heritage and community spirit.
Kenton
Located in the Rural Municipality of Wallace-Woodworth northeast of Virden, the friendly community of Kenton takes great pride in its warmth and character. Kenton has an estimated population of 180 people, but has many services for a community of its size. Nearby Kenworth Dam has been developed for camping, swimming, fishing, and other recreational opportunities. Just off the Trans-Canada Highway, Kenton is part of the Rolling River Route, allowing travelers to slow down and enjoy the scenery.
Travel Manitoba Visitor Information Centre — Kirkella
Travel Manitoba operates a Visitor Information Centre at the Manitoba/ Saskatchewan border along the Trans‑Canada Highway at Kirkella.
This seasonal centre is open during the summer months only, from mid-June through mid-September. Hours are Thursday - Monday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. (closed Tuesday & Wednesday). Washrooms are accessible 24/7, 365 days a year.
The centre is staffed by two Travel Manitoba Travel Counsellors who can provide suggestions for camping, dining, festivals, or general information. The centre has an assortment of free materials for visitors including pamphlets, maps, and travel guides.

Virden Indoor Rodeo & Wild West Daze
Saddle up for four days of rodeo, music, food, small‑town fun, and big‑time talent at the 36th Virden Indoor Rodeo & Wild West Daze.
Thursday — Kickoff Day
The fun starts at noon with a FREE Community Barbecue in Victoria Park sponsored by Corex Resources. Junior and High School cowboys and cowgirls hit the arena for a two-day event, competing for top provincial titles.
On Thursday evening, check out Downtown Daze—live entertainment, food, kids bouncers, a mechanical bull, vendors, and check out the vintage rides at the Westman on Wheels Show & Shine.
Friday — Pro Rodeo Action Begins
Enjoy afternoon slack competition and in the evening, get ready for a high-energy rodeo

Fuel up at the Rodeo Pancake Breakfast, then catch top-notch roping action in the arena. In the afternoon, the Demolition Derby brings thrilling adventure for those wanting even more horsepower in their weekend.
Finish the weekend strong with Shootout Sunday at the arena, where the best of the best compete for extra prize money, championship jackets, and saddles. Kids 15 & under get in free for this family-focused performance.

Virden Indoor Rodeo & Wild West Daze has been voted Rodeo of the Year in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025 by the Canadian Cowboys Association (CCA) — it is also 10-time winner of the MB Rodeo Cowboys Association (MRCA) Rodeo of the Year.
The event is dual-sanctioned and a makeor-break event for competitors wanting to earn points for the MRCA and CCA finals in the Fall each year.

Virden Demolition Derby

The Virden Demolition Derby features a variety of car and truck heats, door prizes and a 50/50 draw. Raffle car tickets are also on sale, with all proceeds going to the VCI Power Mech Class to help cover program costs and support students throughout the year. Held on the Sunday afternoon of the Virden Indoor Rodeo & Wild West Daze, the Demolition Derby is an annual community favourite.

Madesa MX Motocross
Madesa MX Motocross Track is located within the scenic Assiniboine Valley and was built with spectators in mind. This new track on the Manitoba and Saskatchewan Motocross circuits hosts a number of events throughout the summer, including the Manitoba Provincial Championship Round 2: May 23 & 24, 2026 (Saturday Open Practice, Sunday Race Day) and Round 3: May 30 & 31, 2026 (Saturday Open Practice, Sunday Race Day). Riders enjoy the only track in Canada with a mesh starting gate during competitions while spectators are able to see 95% of the track from the built-up grandstand, making this track an ideal stop this summer.
The track is open to prep tracked ride days for competitors to practice, but you can also contact the track owner about experiencing Motocross for yourself.
With over 300 riders, this exciting new sport in our area is one to experience. Located six miles northeast of Virden. Harding Fair

The Harding Fair is a long-running oneday agricultural fair held each summer in Harding, Manitoba, and is considered a classic prairie country fair. First held in 1904, it remains a highlight of the local summer calendar.
Today, it is part of the region’s “Milk Run,” a week-long circuit of western Manitoba fairs,
featuring livestock shows, competitions, community meals, and traditional country fair activities. The Harding Fair is a must-see event for anyone interested in prairie life and farming heritage.
Every August, Elkhorn comes alive with one of its most anticipated annual traditions—the Elkhorn Elks Western Weekend. This high energy summer celebration draws visitors from across the region for a full weekend of community spirit, western heritage, and family fun.
Over the years, Western Weekend has earned its reputation as a can’t miss event thanks to its blend of heart pounding rodeo action, friendly competitions, and good old fashioned prairie hospitality. Guests can expect two days packed with excitement, featuring chariot racing, chuckwagon racing, barrel racing, a lively Slo Pitch tournament, and plenty of activities for all ages.
Families and spectators love the atmosphere around the grounds—kids’ activities, local favourites at the Elks Saloon, and the buzz of
riders, horses, and cheering crowds. In past years, the event has even welcomed special surprises—such as characters and performers roaming the grounds, delighting young visitors and adding to the festive energy.
As the sun sets, the fun continues with a classic Saturday night social and live entertainment, where both locals and visitors gather to unwind, dance, and celebrate Elkhorn’s strong community spirit.

The site of the Kenworth Dam has been developed for camping, swimming and fishing, and makes an ideal location for Kenton’s annual Canada Day celebrations. This popular swimming hole is located near Lenore, Manitoba in the Municipality of Wallace-Woodworth. Set off the beaten track within the beautiful prairie landscape is a refreshing swimming hole and maintained beach area.

Opening in 2026, the Co-op Community Playground in Kenton is a perfect place to relax, play and enjoy the welcoming atmosphere of Kenton. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of local volunteers and community groups, this vibrant new space has quickly become a proud landmark in the community.

Scallion Creek Trail
Scallion Creek runs though the Town of Virden and is being rejuvenated by a group of local volunteers.
Scallion Creek Trail committee’s vision is to restore the natural trail along the Scallion Creek where possible and to continue a walking path throughout the community. Their goal is to provide this recreation trail to enhance outdoor activity for all ages, and also to promote education and healthy living for all.

Virden Skate Park
With approximately 6,500 square feet of concrete riding area, the skate park boasts unique features like a half-pipe, pump track, and grind rails. It is a multi-use park suitable for riders of skateboards, BMX bikes, scooters, and inline skates. Riders are asked to wear proper safety equipment and abide
by posted notices. As the park is suitable for beginner and experienced riders, we ask that participants respect each other’s riding abilities.

The Virden Spray Park is open daily during the summer months from 10:00 a.m.8:00 p.m. and is located adjacent to the ball diamonds and playground behind Tundra Oil & Gas Place.
After splashing in the sun, enjoy a rest under the newly installed sunshade. The Virden Spray Park is perfect for all ages and six bathrooms/ change rooms are available nearby.

Swimming Pool
The Virden Swimming Pool is open from June to the end of August. Change room facilities are located within Tundra Oil & Gas Place. The pool has a children’s area with a toddler lions slide, and a large double loop waterside. Swimming lessons, lap swim, aqua fit classes, and public swim are available throughout the season.

FISHING
Eternal Springs
Eternal Springs, maintained by local volunteers, features two small stocked trout ponds, hiking trails, barbeque pits, a 66-foot swinging bridge and picnic tables. It’s an ideal place to head out for a walk and explore some new hiking trails.

Virden Fish Pond
The Virden Fish Pond might just be one of the best-kept secrets in the town.
Maintained by volunteers, the Fish Pond is stocked, and has been since 1990. In the summer of 2022, the fish pond was stocked with 200 Steelhead trout fingerlings (which are essentially the same as Rainbow Trout) and a new dock was added in the summer of 2021. You don’t have to have a license to fish here and you can catch as many as you want. An aerator ensures there is no winter kill, and the pond can be enjoyed year-round.

Virden Wellview Golf Club
Manitoba golf was born in Virden in 1892. As the first golf course in the province, the Virden Wellview Golf Club 9-hole course is classically designed with wide fairways and deep, windswept grassy roughs, sand bunkers and water hazards. Several updates throughout the years to the course have included new greens and tee boxes, practice area, driving range, and brand new clubhouse that opened in 2020. The clubhouse is open April to October.

CPR Historic Centre
During the summer of 1883, the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) main line crossed Gopher Creek about 45 kilometres from the present Saskatchewan border. The siding, with a bridge, small station and water tower, was named Virden, after the country estate of The Duke of Manchester, a major CPR shareholder. Within a few years, a thriving community had established itself on the townsite surveyed by the CPR.
By 1899 Virden had grown to such an extent that plans were made to replace the original station with a larger, more modern, facility. Built in 1900, the picturesque design for the new depot was a product of R.B. Pratt, a notable station designer, first with the CPR and then for their rival, Canadian Northern. The Virden station was from a standardized set of plans, used on several other Manitoba stations. The design was distinguished
by its remarkable roof, an impressive and complicated composition with dormers and beak-like canopies. The Virden Station is the only one in Manitoba constructed of fieldstone.
Nearby, a railway underpass built in 1917 allows pedestrians to cross the tracks safely.

The Caboose
While visiting the CPR Historic Centre, take a moment to admire the caboose that stands guard over the building. Before the caboose was brought to its final destination, it was lovingly restored to reflect how it would look to those who saw our country from within its walls. How many of us remember waiting for the end of a train so we could wave at the men or women in the caboose?
Costume Closet
The Costume Closet has been deemed a one-of-a-kind collection—like no other in Canada! With over 30,000 items it’s no wonder! Housed within its 4,000 square foot building are pieces of Manitoba and Canada’s history. Some examples are a cape that was bought in the Eatons store in Montreal before one was built in Winnipeg, a man’s black wool bathing suit that was bought in England before 1910, and authentic military uniforms worn in WW2. Costumes from this collection have been used in several movie productions. Tours are available upon request, do not miss out on the opportunity to view this collection! The Costume Closet is open Mondays and Thursdays from 3:00 p.m. 6:00 p.m.

Kenton Bandstand
Located on Kenton’s main street, across from our local Dodge dealership, this venue is used for many events, from Canada Day celebrations, concerts, fundraisers, and evenings out on the Legion patio, to personal events such as weddings and funerals. The bandstand is nestled in the centre of town, surrounded by beautiful trees and gardens. The stage itself is decorated with murals done by Kenton’s very own artists, Erica and Mary Lowe, and built by the volunteer hands of many wonderful community members. Kenton is very lucky to have this venue maintained again by their “green thumb” volunteer gardeners. The bandstand itself is open to both the Legion patio and the large green space. This gives an opportunity for enjoying local shows from any vantage point. The idea to construct this venue came

about when some mothers in the community who attend the local playgroup thought a natural playground would be a nice addition to the town. The idea took roots and the community has not looked back. New additions to the park have included benches, balance beam logs for play, gardens, and a memorial garden. The memorial garden has been a nice addition to the space, giving everyone a spot in town to remember loved ones lost. It is a work in progress and the community hopes to continue to create this space into an area that can grow over time for all to enjoy.

Virden Pioneer Home Museum
A visit to the Virden Pioneer Home Museum greets guests with the way of life of an established Victorian family in the Canadian West. The large brick-veneer home, which houses the majority of the museum’s collection, was built in 1888 on “Quality Hill,” which represented one of the wealthiest districts in early Virden. Each room has been re-furbished to reflect the charm of the era, with numerous period items and furniture, giving it a homey, almost lived-in feeling.
The museum was officially opened in 1970 – Manitoba’s Centennial year — with 300 artifacts and has grown to over 11,000 on display. The museum’s annexes house post office, general store, and schoolhouse
displays, as well as other memorabilia of pioneer life. First World War artifacts and uniforms, and a folk-art gallery, are also featured. The museum has one of the most extensive and complete collections in rural Manitoba.

Manitoba Antique Auto Museum
Along the Trans-Canada Highway at Elkhorn is a collection of rare, antique automobiles, vintage agricultural equipment and quirky memorabilia so unique that you won’t question your decision to drive across the Prairies in the heat of the summer to check it out.
A red 1930 American Austin miniature car greets you in the lobby along with a taxidermy two-headed calf, and vintage photos of local curling and baseball teams, 4-H clubs and threshing bees.
Through a second set of doors is where the automotive-history experience begins: An exotic collection of 80 vehicles awaits, including a 1902 Holsman, a 1909 Hupmobile, and one of the largest collections of original McLaughlin Motor Cars in Canada. You’ll also find a horsedrawn hearse on skis for the winter,
a 1955 Packard, and plenty more items to pique your interest.
This museum owes its existence to founder Isaac (Ike) Clarkson, a local farmer who passionately wanted to preserve a mechanical record of his times. With more than 120 antique automobiles, pioneer tools and a steam engine, this museum is one of a kind.

Woodworth Millennium Museum
This two-storey wooden residence in the village of Kenton was built in the early 20th century by local businessman Leander Lawlor. It is one of the few wellpreserved buildings remaining from the village’s Establishment-era history. Lawlor was a longstanding Kenton businessman and built many local residential and commercial buildings including his own house. The six modest bedrooms on the
second-floor help tell the story of its time as a boarding house. This type of house was important to the development of early 20th century prairie towns, where a boarding house provided temporary or longer-term residence for those newlyarrived or in transition. The house is now a community museum, tours of which are by appointment only.

HISTORIC SITES
River Valley Historical Society
River Valley School District No. 879 was formally established in February 1896 with a stone school building. Named for its position in the Assiniboine River Valley northeast of Virden, the school opened with 33 students taught by Mr. Brokenshire, the minister at Breadalbane Church.
The school was the educational and social centre of the area until it closed in 1955; the district was dissolved in July 1966. Renovations to the building since its closure have included the replacement of stones in its southwest corner with concrete, and the bricking over of several window openings.
The former school, along with a picnic area and campsite, are operated as a tourist site by volunteers of the River Valley Historical Society. A plaque mounted on the building door in 1995 commemorates Agnes Anderson for her years of service to the facility. A plaque on the building exterior, dedicated on August 3, 1996,

Virden AUD Theatre
Virden’s treasured opera house, the AUD Theatre was erected in 1911-1912. It is the design of Architect W.A. Elliott. With its outstanding acoustics and classical style, the AUD has been recognized as one of the best concert halls of its size in Western Canada.
When the theatre fell into disarray in the early 1980s, there was danger of it being demolished and a group of citizens rallied and raised over $80,000 to save the building.
In the past 30 years, the volunteer AUD board has undertaken numerous projects with the aim of improving and modernizing the theatre. The latest project is a refurbishment of the AUD seats making them larger while maintaining the charming historic elements. The hand-painted original canvas curtain and the gorgeous box seats make this theatre beautifully unique.
During the year, this magical theatre hosts both professional and local amateur groups. Traditional bookings include elaborate elementary Christmas concerts, the Virden Dance Club, the Virden and District Youth
Choir, and a thriving Virden Music and Arts Festival. Virden Theatre Productions puts on elaborate professional quality productions each fall.
The Auditorium Theatre is a testament to those who fought to preserve it, a privilege to those who have the opportunity to perform in it, and a treasure to the people of Virden and all who attend performances in it.

Historical Walking Tour
Virden today is the hub of the cattle, agriculture and oil industries. The community prides itself on beautiful surroundings and cherishes its local history.
The Virden Historical Tour gives a good background of the town and the story before the coming of the first Canadians. We go back as far as the Great Inland Sea… and the sea monsters that went with it.
Tours deal with the stern-wheelers on the Assiniboine River and famous Fort La Bosse. The tour usually takes a little more than two hours of walking. For a young frontier town, Virden has a wealth of stories to be told.
The tour offers a family-friendly and affordable outing. The guide is theatrical and knowledgeable. The adventure starts at the CPR Historic Centre Station, a story in itself.
Access to the Aud Theatre and Costume Closet can be arranged with a donation to each organization.

Wildlife Association
Fort La Bosse Wildlife Association offers both an indoor and outdoor shooting range. The indoor shooting range is located in Virden. Guests are welcome, if accompanied by a local member. The outdoor range is located in the beautiful Assiniboine Valley northeast of Virden. The scenic location, along with excellent ranges and facilities, make for a great shooting experience. Murals of Prairie Gateway
We have so many beautiful murals throughout the Prairie Gateway Tourism region. In Elkhorn, the front of The Manitoba Antique Automobile Museum was painted to capture the look of one of the antique cars you can find inside the museum. You can find many car-inspired murals all throughout Elkhorn!
In Kenton, the most known mural is on the side of Brierwood Creek Café. This beautiful mural transports you back in time to a scenic winter day. Another popular mural you can find in Kenton is on the side of the Kenton bandstand located in Kenton Community Park. This mural was painted by local artists Erica & Mary Lowe. In Virden, you can find many murals all
around town. The newest mural was painted in 2024 on the side of RBC Royal Bank. This mural is a tribute to Dakota Nations and their connection with the community of Virden. You can also find a mural located on Nelson Street West, that represents all of the incredible aspects of The Town of Virden.

Virden Agricultural Society Grounds
In close proximity to Tundra Oil & Gas Place in Virden is a large agriculture facility that is shared by the Virden Agriculture Society and the Virden Indoor Rodeo. The area is maintained throughout the summer season and includes many barns, wash racks, outdoor arenas, showers and a building that offers a canteen, bathroom and office space.
The Virden Agricultural Society Grounds has been home to events for over 140 years with an average of 12,000 spectators annually over the last 10 years.
The completion of the Co-op Barn in 2025 has enhanced the functionality of the grounds and will add to the diversity of future events that can be accommodated. The Virden Ag Society wishes to express their appreciation to the Federated Coop for their support in awarding a “Co-op Community Space Grant” to complete this exciting project.

Virden Oil Capitals Junior “A” Hockey
In 2011, a dedicated group of local investors purchased the Winnipeg Saints Junior “A” franchise and relocated the team to Virden, where they began play at the newly built Tundra Oil & Gas Place as the Virden Oil Capitals in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. Since that inaugural season, the Oil Caps have been a consistent playoff contender, with their strongest runs coming in 2017–18 and 2022–23 when they advanced all the way to the Turnbull Cup Final.
Over the years, the Oil Caps have become much more than a hockey team, they are a central part of the community’s identity. The Oil Caps bring a high level of Junior “A” hockey to Virden every winter, showcasing elite talent from the local area, across Canada, and beyond. Many players move on to NCAA, U SPORTS, and
professional opportunities, giving local fans the chance to watch top-tier hockey right in their own backyard.
In June 2020, the organization officially transitioned to operating as a NotFor-Profit, further strengthening its commitment to community involvement and sustainability. From school visits and local events to volunteer initiatives and partnerships with businesses, the Oil Caps take pride in giving back to the community that supports them so passionately.
The Oil Caps continue to provide exciting, competitive hockey while serving as a source of pride, entertainment, and inspiration throughout Virden and the surrounding area.
George M. Whyte Multi Court
The George M Whyte Multi Court in Kenton was completed in the summer of 2025. The grand opening of the Multi Court was held on Canada Day with locals participating in pickleball matches, basketball games, and trying out new recreational equipment at the Court.
Kenton’s Multi Court is the perfect place to take in summer activities. Whether you’re a pickleball fanatic or want to enjoy the day and shoot some hoops, the Multi Court is the perfect place for you and your family! Open during the summer months, you can also find equipment in the lending shed to use free of charge.

The campground contains 16 full-service sites, along with unserviced sites and a large grassy tenting area. Serviced sites are large and open, bordered by grass and young trees, and feature gravel strips for parking. Lonesome Oak Campground
Lonesome Oak Campground is situated at Kenworth Dam (Kenton Reservoir). Volunteers have developed a beach and swimming area, barbecue area, washroom and shower facilities, change rooms and full-service campground with tenting area. There are seven serviced and three unserviced sites for camping.
From Kenton, proceed ½ mile east on PR 259 to PTH 21; turn right (south) and proceed 1 mile. Turn right (west) for ½ mile. See Kenton Map marker #5 on page 50.
With 80 sites available, the Virden Lions Campground contains 10 spacious tenting sites as well as 15 sites with water and 15-amp electrical service. The remainder of the sites are 30-amp with the majority full service (i.e. 30-amp, water and sewer).
The campground offers clean and wellmaintained shower and facilities, picnic tables, playground structures and Wi-Fi. Firepits are available throughout the campground and wood is available from the office at a very reasonable price. The campground is located within minutes of the ice rink, swimming pool, golf course, shopping facilities, laundromat, and the community trout pond.

The Alexandra Hotel & Restaurant and the Wellview Golf Club both offer full service sit-down dining and W&L Restaurant offers takeout Chinese cuisine. The restaurant at the Virden Wellview Golf Club is open regular hours from April to October, and for private functions from November to March.
