Design Brief:

To design a house that can spell out either your initials or your full name on the top-down view or the elevational view.

Design Intent:

To spell out my initials on bird's eye view of the building.

Design Strategy:

Making use of different colored materials for the roof so that it would make it easier to notice the alphabets that make up the initials.

Familia – Year 1 Project

Location Plan:

Design Brief:

To design a Bungalow for a family of 5 comprising of an 85-year-old wheelchair bound Grandmother, 50-year-old Father, 45-year-old Mother, 10-year-old boy and a 15-year-old daughter.

Design Intent:

To encourage family bonding by encouraging the family members to spend more time in the main common spaces.

Design Strategies:

•​Placing the smaller and more private spaces around the large common spaces •Using greenery and water features to provide a sense of privacy to the common spaces as well as to encourage the family members to spend more time in the common space •Ensure that even when the family members are at the private space, there would still be a certain amount of visual connection between the private and public spaces

Massing Models Overall building has been segregated into 2 different zones: Blue: Private Spaces Red: Public Spaces

The private zones are then split up into smaller spaces

I then pulled up the public spaces to further emphasize on the public spaces as well as the different hierarchy of the spaces.

I then added greenery as well as water features around and in the building to help to provide a sense of privacy for the common areas as well as to help to influence the circulation of the family members.

The public spaces are then Pulled out and made bigger

The private zones are then placed around the public spaces.

The private spaces are then made smaller to further emphasize the hierarchy between private and public spaces.

I then pulled out a portion of the public spaces to make space for the library. I decided to place the library at a different area from the main common areas as it is a more “ quiet “ area, different from the more “noisy” area such as the living and dining areas.

By putting the private spaces around the common space, it allows for a sense of visual connection between the private and common spaces by allowing for a sense of visual connection between the spaces, should something interesting occurs in the public spaces, people would then be able to easily notice it and would then be motivated to join those who are in the common space.

FAB Studios Problem Statement

homelessness in Singapore remains an underrated issue as most of the people are not aware of the actual amount of homeless People Homeless people are homeless for a reason and they still deserve a temporary place to live in while they sort out their issues before getting back on their own two feet. By using the technology of digital fabrication, we aim to provide shelter for the homeless by creating modules that can be attached to existing buildings’ facade.

Therefore, they can have a place to accommodate their needs while having their own privacy

Our Goal

Our goal is to create a permanent shelter that is able to attach to a building facade. In view of the fundamental construction technology we have, the module can be done as shown. By implementing the knowledge of digital fabrication, we intended to create a modular stacking system in a way that allows each module to interconnect with each other.

Joints

Module to scaffolding Joints Hook like mechanism Instead of an annular joint we decided to have a total amount of 3 links which attaches the module to the scaffolding.

In order to install the module, the crane would first place the module on the bottom beam using the slot like hook that is at the floor slab of the main module. After that, the module would be tilted so that the corner hooks would hook onto the intersections of the scaffolding. In order to remove the module, the crane would have to first release the top corner hook and lifting the entire module.

1. Started off with a 3-sided shape that tilted in different angles.

2. Adjusted the angle to ensure it can be implemented in our final design module.

3. Added a Mortise and Tenon joint at both ends of the connector in order to attach both sides of walls at once.

4. Added a wider Mortise and Tenon joint at the center to connect all 3 walls together. Due to the constraint of modular system design, hence slot joint will be introduced to connect both modules.

5. Instead of protruding out the joint, we created a socket which will accommodate the slot joint.

Slot Joints

This Slot joint is connected between module to module. There are 4 sockets at both sides of the slot joint to accommodate the connector being assembled to form a module. This is to ensure the rigidness of our module structure since it is a modular stacking system. Therefore, every module structure has to be sufficient in order to support the whole structure when stacked up.

Another socket is made at the end of the Slot joint. This is to connect the railing/ exterior wall of the module to prevent users from falling off the module

Rhino Workshop

DESIGN INTENT:

•This pavilion is used to act as a bridge between the 2 blocks surrounding the site and to bring students from both buildings together to create a sense of unity and productivity amongst students •Provides space for students from the different ABE courses to spend time to study and bond with each other as well as to display their own works.

•Using Geometrical shapes to expand areas for a more conducive studying environment resulting in an intricate shape. Within each small pod, windows or openings are aligned to face the studios of the two buildings as an indication for classes to start.

DESIGN STRATEGIES:

•Pods are differently sized to cater to different groups of people(4 people, 6 people, 8 people) •Having a mixture of smaller and larger study pods to suit the different needs and studying styles of the students who use the pavilion •Intricately shaped like domes to allow for the privacy that students look for in study areas to reduce distractions from the outside.

•Using of translucent skylights on top of domes to allow light to illuminate in without causing glares on the inside.

•Precise location of door and window openings so enable natural ventilation to flow throughout the structure and daylighting to enter without causing the insides to heat up.

For the First prototype, we tried to experience with where we were going to place the walkways as well as the different domes Red – common spaces Yellow – private studying pods Cyan – circulation spaces

For the 2nd group of prototypes, we tried to include a roof over the series of geodesic bubbles to help provide protection from the rain and sun.

For prototype 2.1, we placed the shelter to face the walkways to the toilet area as well as to one of the entrance walkways. For prototype 2.2, we wanted to provide even more shade for the entire space. We then also took into consideration the wind path which is why we lifted up the south and north end of the roof to help to encourage wind flow into the interior of the space

Prototype 3: 3.1

For the 3rd prototype, we decided to not include the roof and decided to go with a slightly more simplified pavilion shelter.

After more or less finalising the design, we then started trying to come up with the components that were to be printed out. this included the locations of the joints as well as connecting components.

However, when we tried to generate the joints, all of the joints were all twisted and disfigured with many inconsistencies which made it unusable.

We then tried to export the model into a new file and managed to fix it.

Assembly of physical model

Final model including the joints as well as the connecting elements . Due to the time constraint, we ended up having to decrease the overall size of the model as well as the amount of spheres that are in the building.

For this model, we prioritised the environmental factors that are affecting the site itself. this consist of the wind flow as well as the sun path.

That is why we placed the main entrance and exit at the north and south of the site to encourage wind flow into the structure itself.

After finalising the design of the overall structure, we then finalised the joints so that we could use the 3D printer to print out the joints. In order to 3D Print out the joints, we had to use the Ultimaker Cura app to export the 3D models of the joint into a thumb drive in order to print it out.

We then also had to cut the wooden dowels to form the connecting elements that are suppose to span between the joints.

In order to cut out the dowels, we had to calculate the length of each individual dowel before using a scroll saw to cut it up.
