ΣΗΜΕΙΩΣΕΙΣ ΠΡΟΓΡΑΜΜΑΤΟΣ Πολλά έχουν γραφτεί για τη σχέση μεταξύ τονικότητας και της μορφής της σονάτας. Στην ουσία η δομή σονάτας είναι βασισμένη στην έννοια της αντιπαράθεσης δύο μουσικών ιδεών, κάτι παρόμοιο με την αρχαία τραγωδία, όταν προστέθηκε δεύτερος ηθοποιός ούτως ώστε να υπάρξει διάλογος. Για να δημιουργηθεί αυτή η αντιπαράθεση (είτε μελωδική είτε αρμονική) είναι αναγκαία η ύπαρξη ενός συστήματος στο οποίο οι 12 νότες της χρωματικής κλίμακας να είναι μεν σε συσχετισμό, αλλά να μην είναι οι ίδιες καθαυτές. Μπορεί να ακούγεται παράδοξο, και αυτό δημιουργεί σύγχυση στην κατανόηση της έννοιας μεταξύ ‘ίδιες’ και ‘ίσες’. Οι νότες και τα διαστήματα μεταξύ τους μπορεί να θεωρούνται ‘ίσα’, στη θεωρητική βάση που τα βλέπει όλα ως ηχητικά κύματα, αλλά δεν είναι όλα τα ‘ίδια’. Η κάθε νότα έχει συγκεκριμένα χαρακτηριστικά (ο τόνος είναι μόνο ένα από αυτά), και αυτό που συναρπάζει, είναι ο τρόπος με τον οποίο συνδυάζονται και δημιουργούν μουσικές ιδέες ή προσωπικότητες. Το τονικό σύστημα ταιριάζει με αυτή την εξερεύνηση, και η δομή σονάτας (είτε ως δομική μορφή για την πρώτη κίνηση ή ως περιγραφή έργου με πολλές κινήσεις) είναι η λογική επέκτασή της. Παρά το γεγονός ότι είχα χρησιμοποιήσει μερικώς το τονικό σύστημα σε έργα τα οποία όμως ήταν μη τονικά, η πρώτη φορά που συνέθεσα μορφή σονάτας σε τονικό έργο ήταν το 2012 στο Κοντσέρτο για Βιόλα και Ορχήστρα. Αυτό ήταν ένα ιδανικό πρώτο βήμα διότι η υπάρχουσα αντιπαράθεση μεταξύ ορχήστρας και σολίστ διευκόλυνε την πρόκληση. Ακολούθως, το 2014 έγραψα τη Σονάτα για βιολί και πιάνο αρ. 1, και μετά από κάποια χρόνια το 2019 επέστρεψα στη δομή αυτή με μια σονάτα για βιόλα και πιάνο. Χρησιμοποίησα την πείρα που είχα με το Κοντσέρτο και δημιούργησα μια σειρά από διαφορετικές ‘προσωπικότητες’, οι οποίες επιδεικνύουν την ποικιλία ηχοχρωμάτων που μπορεί να δημιουργήσει η βιόλα, όπως επίσης το πόσο επιτυχημένος είναι ο συνδυασμός βιόλας και πιάνου. Η πρώτη κίνηση είναι βασισμένη στην αντιπαράθεση ενός ρυθμικού μοτίβου και μιας μελωδίας που ξεδιπλώνεται σιγά σιγά. Η δεύτερη είναι γεμάτη ενέργεια, η οποία δίνει ώθηση να βγουν στην επιφάνεια διάφορες μουσικές ιδέες και μελωδίες. Η τρίτη κίνηση (η οποία είναι η αργή κίνηση του έργου) περιλαμβάνει μελωδίες εμπνευσμένες από διαφορετικές χρονικές περιόδους, η πρώτη από την μπαρόκ, η δεύτερη από ελληνική έντεχνη μουσική, η τρίτη από τη ρομαντική περίοδο. Και αυτή η κίνηση είναι σε μορφή σονάτας. Η τελευταία κίνηση είναι γρήγορη και δεξιοτεχνική, σε μορφή ροντό, και με ένα από τα μεσαία μέρη εμπνευσμένο από μουσική λατινικής Αμερικής.

Η Σονάτα για βιόλα και πιάνο αρ. 2 γράφτηκε την άνοιξη 2020. Όταν τελείωσα την πρώτη τον Δεκέμβριο 2019, και εφόσον συνειδητοποίησα πόσο συναρπαστικός είναι ο συνδυασμός των δύο αυτών οργάνων, αποφάσισα να ξεκινήσω τη δεύτερη. Δούλευα πάνω σε αυτό το έργο όταν ξεκίνησε η πανδημία, και έτσι η προσπάθεια να το τελειώσω μετατράπηκε σε μορφή αντίστασης στα τραγικά γεγονότα. Δεν υπήρξε συνειδητή προσπάθεια να αποπνέει το έργο θλίψη, όμως ο φωτεινός χαρακτήρας της πρώτης σονάτας μετατράπηκε σε συννεφιασμένο. Η πρώτη κίνηση είναι σε δομή σονάτας, και η αντιπαράθεση είναι μεταξύ ενός μοτίβου κατιούσας κίνησης και μιας μελωδίας ανιούσας κίνησης. Η δεύτερη κίνηση ξεκινά με μια εκτεταμένη μελωδία η οποία προχωρά μέσα από διάφορα επεισόδια, το τελευταίο εκ των οποίων δημιουργεί την εικόνα ενός άδειου ανεμοδαρμένου δρόμου μαζί με τον ήχο μιας μακρινής λατέρνας. Η τρίτη κίνηση είναι μια σειρά από παραλλαγές. Η αρχική τονικότητα της Μι ύφεσης μείζονος μεταμορφώνεται σε Μι ύφεση ελάσσονα, και η αίσθηση μιας υποκείμενης ενέργειας γίνεται όλο και πιο έντονη. Τα τελευταία μέτρα όμως σβήνουν αινιγματικά.

PROGRAMME NOTES The close relationship between tonality and sonata form is well documented. The sonata form is fundamentally based on the notion of two opposing musical ideas, very much in the manner of the introduction of a second character in ancient Greek tragedy, which made dialogue possible. In order to achieve contrast between different musical ideas (whether melodic or harmonic) there has to be a system where the 12 notes of the chromatic scale are related to each other, but are not the same. It makes for an interesting paradox, and therein lies the confusion often perceived between ‘same’ and ‘equal’. Notes and intervals might be equal, in the abstract sense that they are all sound waves, but they are not the same. They each have different attributes and special features (pitch being only one of them) and so, what makes this fascinating is how they can combine in order to create this so-called musical idea (or personality).

Tonality is a system that allows for this kind of exploration, and the sonata form (whether this refers to the first movement sonata form or the overall multiple movement sonata form) takes this to its logical conclusion.

Even though I had introduced elements of tonality in otherwise non-tonal works many years ago, it was only in 2012 that I composed the first sonata form of a tonal work, this being the first movement of the Concerto for Viola and Orchestra. This turned out to be a good introduction, because things overall are facilitated by the existing contrast between orchestra and soloist. Thereafter, the First Sonata for Violin and Piano followed in 2014, and then, in the summer of 2019, I returned to the sonata form in the shape of a sonata for viola and piano. I took all the experience that I acquired whilst writing for the viola in the Concerto, and utilised it aiming to create various contrasting ‘characters,’ not only to show the depth of colour that the viola can achieve, but also how successful the combination of viola and piano can be.

The first movement is an opposition of a strong rhythmic ostinato versus a long slowmoving melody.

The second one is an energetic flow of musical ideas through which melodies soar.

The third (in effect the slow movement) has multiple melodies, each one inspired by different eras – the first one by the baroque, the second one by Greek entechni music (the nearest example to this is that of French nouvelle chanson) and the third one by the romantic era. The overall form is also a sonata form.

The last movement is fast and virtuosic, in a rondo form, and with a contrasting section inspired by Latin music.

The Sonata for Viola and Piano No. 2 was composed in spring 2020. Having finished the first viola sonata during Christmas 2019, and seeing how compelling the fusion of these two instruments was, I decided to start work on a second one. I was composing this piece when the pandemic began, and finishing it became a form of ‘resistance’ to the tragic events that unfolded. There was no intention to make the work sad or dark, but I find that the sunny character of the first sonata has turned cloudy in the second one.

The first movement, is of course, a sonata form, where the contrast lies between the first musical idea, which is based on a descending motif, versus the second one, which is melodic and ascending.

The second movement introduces a long melody that unfolds over several episodes, the last one of which evokes the image of a windy empty street and the sound of a distant ‘laterna’ (the Greek version of the barrel organ).

The third and last movement is a set of variations. The original key of E flat major has now metamorphosed into E flat minor, and the intensity level gradually becomes more impassioned. However, there is no strong final resolution; rather, the final bars fade away ambiguously.

ΒΙΟΓΡΑΦΙΚΑ ΣΗΜΕΙΩΜΑΤΑ | BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES MÁTÉ SZŰCS Παρά τη νεαρή ηλικία του, ο Ούγγρος βιολίστας, Máté Szűcs έχει ήδη στο ενεργητικό του μια διεθνή σταδιοδρομία, έχοντας ήδη βραβευτεί ως σολίστ, μουσικός δωματίου και μέλος ορχήστρας. Για οκτώ συναπτά έτη, ο Máté διετέλεσε καθήκοντα πρώτης βιόλας στην περίφημη Φιλαρμονική του Βερολίνου (2011–18), με την οποία είχε επίσης εμφανιστεί, τον Σεπτέμβριο του 2017, ως σολίστ στο Κοντσέρτο για βιόλα και ορχήστρα του Bartók. Ο κ. Szűcs άλλαξε από το βιολί στη βιόλα όταν ήταν δεκαεπτά ετών και στη συνέχεια ολοκλήρωσε τις σπουδές του στο Βασιλικό Ωδείο των Βρυξελλών και στο Βασιλικό Ωδείο της Φλάνδρας στην Αμβέρσα του Βελγίου, από όπου αποφοίτησε με τις υψηλότερες διακρίσεις. MÁTÉ SZŰCS Despite his young age, Hungarian violist, Máté Szűcs has enjoyed an international career as an award-winning soloist, chamber musician and an orchestral member. For eight consecutive years, Máté has served as principal viola at the Berliner Philharmoniker (2011—18), with which he had also appeared as a soloist in Bartók’s Concerto for Viola and Orchestra (September 2017).

Mr Szűcs switched from the violin to the viola when he was only seventeen and went on to study at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels and the Royal Conservatory of Flanders in Antwerp, Belgium, graduating with the highest distinctions. He continued his education at the Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth in Waterloo, Belgium, where he was awarded a diploma, again, with highest distinction. Mr Szűcs received his PhD in 2020.

At the age of eleven, Máté won a Special Prize at the Hungarian Violin Competition for Young Artists. Soon thereafter, he received First Prize at the Violin Competition in Szeged (Hungary) and First Prize for the Best Sonata Duo at the Hungarian Chamber Music Competition. Subsequently, he won First Prize at the International Violin and Viola Competition, held in Liège, Belgium, he was a finalist at the International Viola Competition Jean Françaix in Paris and a Laureate of the International Music Competition Tenuto in Brussels.

As a chamber musician, Máté has been a member of various chamber music ensembles, such as the Mendelssohn Ensemble, the Con Spirito Piano Quartet, the Trio Dor, the Enigma Ensemble and the Fragments Ensemble. He has worked with prominent musicians such as violinists Janine Jansen, Frank-Peter Zimmermann, Christian Tetzlaff, Vadim Repin, Ilja Gringolts, Kristof Baráti, Kirill Troussov, violist Vladimir Mendelssohn, cellists László Fenyő, István Várdai, Camille Thomas and pianists Julien Quentin and Nicolas Costantinou.

In addition to performing solo with the Berliner Philharmoniker, he has appeared as a soloist with orchestras such as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Flanders, the Bamberger Symphoniker, the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, the Frankfurt Radio

Orchestra and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, where he had also served as principal violist.

Mr Szűcs is also a sought-after pedagogue; since 2006, he has been a regular professor at the Thy Masterclass chamber music summer festival in Denmark, and between 2012 and 2014 he has taught at the Britten-Pears Festival in Aldeburgh, England. He has also taught at the University of Music in Saarbrücken, the Karajan Academy of the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Hanns Eisler University of Music in Berlin and the Franz Liszt University of Music in Budapest. Currently, he is appointed Professor of Viola at the Geneva University of Music in Switzerland.

Mr Szűcs holds regular masterclasses around the globe, often visiting cities such as, New York, Los Angeles, Michigan, London, Berlin, Brussels, Shanghai, Taipei, Seoul and Tokyo.

Ο Νικόλας Κωσταντίνου είναι απόφοιτος του μουσικού τμήματος του Πανεπιστημίου του Σέγκεντ, του Πανεπιστημίου Μουσικής Ferenc Liszt στη Βουδαπέστη, του Ινστιτούτου Μουσικής στο Cleveland του Οχάιο, καθώς και του Βασιλικού Κολλεγίου Μουσικής του Λονδίνου, και είναι κάτοχος των τίτλων Master of Music in Performance, και Διδακτορικού (PhD). NICOLAS COSTANTINOU Steinway Artist Nicolas Costantinou is renowned for impressing his audience with his daring selection of repertoire, old and new, and his ability to perform with extraordinary instrumental ensembles. He has been hailed by critics as ‘…an artist of deep emotions, who is capable of performing music with his whole being and soul…’

(Kaleva) whilst his interpretations have been described as ‘colossal’ and ‘dramatic’ (D. Nicolau).

He has given numerous concerts in Austria, Cyprus, Hungary, Germany, Greece, Finland, France, Lebanon, Portugal, Turkey, Switzerland, the UK and the USA and has performed at London’s Wigmore Hall, the Brahms Saal of the Musikverein in Vienna, the Beethoven-Haus in Bonn, and the Grand Hall of the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. Aside from performances with the Ledra Music Soloists festivals and concert series, he has been invited to perform at international festivals around Europe such as the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival, the Oulunsalo Soi Music Festival (Finland), the Gödöllő Chamber Music Festival (Hungary), and the Kypria Festival (Cyprus). His debut in London’s prestigious Wigmore Hall was received with favourable reviews. He has performed with the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Russian Chamber Philharmonic St. Petersburg, the Budapest Concert Orchestra, the Failoni Chamber Orchestra and the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra, with maestros such as Konrad von Abel, Juri Gilbo, Esa Heikkilä, Notis Georgiou, Spiros Pisinos, Maciej Zoltowski and Ayis Ioannides.

Dr Costantinou enjoys collaborating with a diverse range of instrumentalists and singers alike. His chamber music collaborations have included internationally acclaimed musicians and singers such as the violinists Vilmos Szabadi, Chloë Hanslip, Simos Papanas, Nikos Pittas, Wolfgang Schroeder, Kazuhiro Tagaki, violist Maté Szűcs, the cellists Gustav Rivinius, Erkki Rautio, David Cohen, Péter Somodari, Tytus Miecznikowski, flautists János Bálint, Virginie Bove, oboist Francesco Quaranta, clarinettist Gábor Varga, and the Meta4 and Akadémia string quartets. His passion for Art-Song has led to collaborations with singers such as sopranos Margarita Elia, Zoe Nicolaidou, Theodora Raftis, mezzo-soprano Elli Aloneftou, tenors Christian Zenker, Stelios Georgiou, Marios Andreou and baritone Kyros Patsalides.

He regularly performs works by Cypriot composers in Cyprus, and abroad including a number of world premieres. Dr Costantinou recently performed for the first time in Cyprus Beethoven’s complete works for piano and violin (2013–14) with violinist Nikos Pittas and for piano and cello (2015–16) with cellist Péter Somodari.

In 2018, Nicolas Costantinou gave an all-Chopin recital in Larnaca, Lefkosia, Beirut and London, and appeared in a chamber music recital entitled ‘Music with the Leaders’ where, along with the concertmaster of the Thessaloniki Symphony Orchestra, Simos Papanas, the first viola of the Berliner Philharmoniker, Maté Szűcs and the first cello of the Wiener Philharmoniker, Péter Somodari, he interpreted works by Mozart, Schumann and Brahms.

Nicolas Costantinou graduated from the Greek Hellenic Academy of Music, the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music in Szeged, the Ferenc Liszt University of Music in Budapest (summa cum laude) and holds a Master of Music in Performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music (U.S.). Recently, he was awarded a Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) from London’s Royal College of Music under the supervision of Prof. Paul Banks, Dr Julian Jacobson and Dr Jane Roper. His dissertation is entitled “The Chamber Music of Ernő Dohnányi: Tradition, Innovation and ‘Hungarianness’”. He has also studied with Márta Gulyás, Dr Daniel Shapiro, Sándor Falvai, Ferenc Kerek, Tania Economou and Wanda Economou-Constantinou and he has participated in masterclasses held by acknowledged pianists Dmitri Bashkirov, Nicolas Economou, Vadim Suchanov and Ferenc Rados.

He currently teaches promising new talent in Cyprus. His students have won numerous prizes at international piano competitions, and have participated in piano masterclasses with renowned professors. Some of his students have furthered their studies at highly esteemed academies and universities, amongst them, the Reina Sofía Escuela Superior de Música in Madrid, the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt in Weimar, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow, the Purcell School in London and the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. Dr Costantinou is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Nicosia and he also teaches at the Nicosia Music Schools.

Τον Σεπτέμβριο 2021 η Σονάτα για τσέλο και πιάνο (2020) εκτελέστηκε σε παγκόσμια πρώτη στο Δημοτικό Θέατρο Στροβόλου από τον διεθνούς φήμης τσελίστα Péter Somodari και τον Κύπριο σολίστ Νικόλα Κωσταντίνου.

CONSTANTINOS Y. STYLIANOU Constantinos Y. Stylianou’s work covers the whole spectrum from solo instrumental to symphonic and operatic. Works have been performed by leading orchestras such as the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Bruckner Symphony Orchestra, the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra, the Jeunesses Musicales World Orchestra, as well as the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra, and in prestigious venues such as the Wigmore Hall in London, the King’s Theatre in Edinburgh, St David's Hall in Cardiff, the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Beethoven-Haus in Bonn, the ORF concert hall in Vienna, the UNESCO Headquarters and the Cathédrale Saint-Louis des Invalides in Paris.

He studied piano and composition at the Royal College of Music (BMus, MMus in Piano Performance), at King’s College London (MMus in Composition), and at the Royal Holloway University of London where he was awarded the PhD in Composition in 2005. He is also the recipient of two Composition Awards by the Cyprus Ministry of Education and Culture.

His opera Picknick im Felde (in German) was produced by and performed at the Linz Landestheater, as part of the official events for Linz European Cultural Capital 2009, and was received with enthusiastic reviews. The libretto (also by the composer) is based on the play by Fernando Arrabal. Following further performances in Cyprus, the opera was presented at the Bartók Festival in Hungary in the summer of 2009.

Recently completed and performed works include a set of Twelve Préludes for piano (2008–12), various selections of which have been performed to date in London, Prague, Cardiff, Zurich and Moscow, as well as online, as part of a series of concerts organised by Steinway in spring 2020, the Concerto for Viola in C minor, which was premiered in January 2013, a song cycle titled Symphonia, which was premiered in May 2014 at the Athens Megaron, the Sonata for Violin and Piano (2014– 15) (premiered at the Hellenic Centre in London in 2016), the song cycle Nine Japanese Songs, for soprano and piano (performed at the Pallas Theatre in 2019), as well the commission to write a work for the concert commemorating the Revolution of 1821 for baritone and string orchestra with the title Cyprus and the Light of 1821.

In September 2021, his Sonata for Cello and Piano (2020) received its world premiere at the Strovolos Theatre by the internationally acclaimed cellist Péter Somodari and the Cypriot soloist Nicolas Costantinou.
