Σηµειώσεις προγράµµατος | Programme Notes Η Burlesque, για σόλο βιολί (2003), αποτελείται από τρία µέρη (Toccata, Scherzino, Burlesque). Στη δεύτερη κίνηση, ο ακροατής ξαφνιάζεται ευχάριστα από τη ρυθµική, σχεδόν «µοτσάρτια» δροσιά του ήχου, ο οποίος, όµως, µέσω του αρµονικού απροσδόκητου αποκτά, αναπάντεχα, ενδιαφέρον. Στο δεύτερο µέρος, ο συνθέτης διαµορφώνει ένα ηχητικό υπόστρωµα αρχαιότροπων συγχορδιών (διαδοχικές πέµπτες) στη χαµηλή περιοχή, ενώ µια ανεξάρτητη µελωδική γραµµή αναδιπλώνεται στην περιοχή της σοπράνο. Ενδιαφέρον είναι το γεγονός ότι παρόλο που η απουσία συγκεκριµένης τονικότητας είναι αισθητή, ο προσεκτικός ακροατής αντιλαµβάνεται την παρουσία «τονικών κυψελών», οι οποίες τµηµατικά λειτουργούν ως σηµεία αναφοράς. Στο τελευταίο µέρος, το οποίο φέρει και το όνοµα του έργου (Burlesque), ο Γεωργιάδης φανερώνει ό,τι αγαπά: τον πειραµατισµό και το χιούµορ. Η συνειδητή απουσία του µέτρου, οι έντονες διακυµάνσεις στη ρυθµική αγωγή, αλλά και τους χρωµατισµούς, σε συνδυασµό µε τις αυτοτελείς σύντοµες µουσικές φράσεις παραπέµπουν στη συχνότητα ενός «µουσικού ρευστού», το οποίο προορίζεται κυρίως για τους µουσικά µυηµένους. (Μαρία Αχτσηβασίλη, 2004) The Burlesque, for solo violin (2003), consists of three parts (Toccata, Scherzino, Burlesque). In the second movement, the listener is pleasantly surprised by the rhythmic, almost Mozartian coolness of sound, which, however, becomes unexpectedly interesting through unexpected harmonic shifts. In the second part, the composer forms an acoustic substratum of archaic chords (consecutive fifths) in the bass register, while an independent melodic line unfolds in the high register. Interestingly, although the absence of a certain tonality is noticeable, the attentive listener will perceive the presence of “tonic cells”, which partially function as reference points.

The last part, which bears the name of the work (Burlesque), Georgiades reveals what he loves: experimentation and humour. The conscious absence of metre, the intense rhythmic fluctuations, but also the sound-colours in combination with the independent short musical phrases refer to the frequency of a “musical fluidity”, which is mainly intended for the musically initiated. (Maria Ahtsivasili, 2004) Πώς κατέληξε ένας Σέρβικος Χορός στη συλλογή «Παραδοσιακά Τραγούδια και Χοροί της Κύπρου» που εκδόθηκε από τον Στέλιο Παπαδόπουλο; Η απάντηση, υποθέτω ότι βρίσκεται στην ταραχώδη ιστορία του νησιού. Η Κύπρος κατακτήθηκε κατά τη διάρκεια των αιώνων από τόσες ξένες δυνάµεις. Και, ειδικά κατά τη διάρκεια της πολυετούς οθωµανικής κυριαρχίας (1571–1878), πρέπει να υπήρχε µεγάλη αλληλοεπίδραση µεταξύ των γειτονικών χώρων (Μέση Ανατολή, Βαλκάνια) και των πολιτισµών τους – συµπεριλαµβανοµένου και του τοµέα της λαϊκής µουσικής. Όταν µια µέρα στο Λονδίνο συνάντησα αυτήν τη σύντοµη µελωδία, ενώ έπαιζα τις διάφορες κυπριακές λαϊκές µελωδίες που εµπερικλείονταν στο βιβλίο, ένιωσα αµέσως να ελκύοµαι από την πιασάρικη µελωδία του χορού. Γι’ αυτό έπαιξα µαζί της και την επέκτεινα, εισάγοντας µερικές επιπλέον ενότητες, για να επεκτείνω όχι µόνο τη διάρκεια του χορού, αλλά, ελπίζω, δίνοντάς του και µιαν αίσθηση ολοκλήρωσης.

Τέλος, έδωσα την εκδοχή µου στο όµποε, του οποίου η «ρινική χροιά», νιώθω, ήταν ιδανική για την ανατολίτικη γοητεία αυτής της µουσικής.

How on earth did a Serbian Dance end up in the collection “Traditional Songs and Dances of Cyprus” published by Stelios Papadopoulos?

The answer, I suppose, lies in the island’s turbulent history. Cyprus has been invaded and occupied through the centuries by so many foreign powers; and, especially during the long stretch of Ottoman rule (1571–1878), there must have been a great deal of give and take with neighbouring lands (the Middle East, the Balkans) and their cultures – including in the field of folk music.

When one day in London, I came across this short melody while playing through a book of Cypriot folk music, I was immediately attracted by its catchy tune. So I played around with it and extended it, inserting a few additional sections of my own, to make it longer and, I hope, to give it a sense of completion.

Finally, I gave my version to the oboe, whose ‘nasal timbre’ I feel ideally suits the oriental charm of this music. Το Love Knots είναι ένας κύκλος οκτώ τραγουδιών, σε τέσσερις γλώσσες, αφιερωµένες στη σοπράνο Μαργαρίτα Ηλία. Γιατί τέσσερις γλώσσες; Λοιπόν, για αρχή, αυτές είναι οι γλώσσες των χωρών, των οποίων η κληρονοµιά και η πρωτοτυπία είναι γνωστές και, για µένα, ιδιαίτερα σηµαντικές. Επίσης, πιστεύω ότι οι ποιητές τηρούν ενστικτωδώς µια εθνική ταυτότητα στη δηµιουργική τους γραφή και συχνά, όπως λέει η παροιµία, κάτι χάνεται στη µετάφραση, εποµένως προτιµώ να δουλεύω όπου είναι δυνατόν µε τα πρωτότυπα ποιήµατα. Και τέλος, κάνοντας την επιλογή να δουλέψει µε τέσσερις γλώσσες, ένας συνθέτης έχει έναν τεράστιο µουσικό καµβά, πάνω στον οποίο µπορεί να εργαστεί, αφού κάθε γλώσσα έχει τους δικούς της ήχους, ρυθµούς και υφές. Το θέµα που συνδέει ολόκληρο τον κύκλο είναι η αγάπη – τι άλλο; Το Love Knots δεν χρειάζεται καµία εξήγηση. Λίγοι φαίνεται να µπορούν να ξεφύγουν από την έντονη ένταση της αγάπης, που µπορεί να φτάσει βαθιά στον εσωτερικό µας κόσµο (καθώς και του έρωτα). Και λίγοι αποφεύγουν τις απογοητεύσεις και την αγωνία, τις αναπάντητες ερωτήσεις και τις απαιτητικές προκλήσεις. Το Love Knots προσφέρει µια γεύση από τη χαρά και τον πόνο, την εκπλήρωση και το ατελείωτο µυστήριο της αγάπης.

Love Knots is a cycle of eight songs in four languages dedicated to the soprano Margarita Elia.

Why four languages? Well, for a start, these are the languages of the countries whose heritage and originality are well known and are most important to me. Also, I think poets instinctively adhere to a national identity in their creative writing, and often, as the saying goes, something is lost in translation, so I prefer to work where possible with the original poems. And finally, by making the choice of working in four languages, a

composer has an enormous musical canvas to work on, since each language has its own sounds, rhythms and textures.

The theme linking the whole cycle is LOVE – what else?

The “knotty” business of love hardly needs any explanation. Few seem able to escape the overpowering intensity of love that can reach into our innermost being; and few avoid its disappointments and anguish, its unanswered questions and exacting challenges.

Love Knots offers a glimpse into the joy and the pain, the fulfilment, and the unattainable in love’s never-ending mystery.

I. The Garden of Love William Blake (1757–1827) I went to the Garden of Love, And saw what I never had seen: A Chapel was built in the midst, Where I used to play on the green.

And the gates of this Chapel were shut, And Thou shalt not. writ over the door; So I turn'd to the Garden of Love, That so many sweet flowers bore.

And I saw it was filled with graves, And tomb-stones where flowers should be: And Priests in black gowns, were walking their rounds, And binding with briars, my joys & desires.

For Mercy, Pity, Peace, and Love Is God, our father dear, And Mercy, Pity, Peace, and Love Is Man, his child and care.

For Mercy has a human heart, Pity a human face, And Love, the human form divine, And Peace, the human dress.

II. The Divine Image William Blake To Mercy, Pity, Peace, and Love All pray in their distress; And to these virtues of delight Return their thankfulness.

Ο William Blake υπήρξε ποιητής, ζωγράφος και τυπογράφος. Η εποχή του τον αγνόησε, παρ’ όλο το σηµαντικό του ταλέντο. Μόνο αργότερα εκτιµήθηκε, ειδικά σαν οραµατιστής αγαθών ηθών. Τα έργα του περιγράφουν την αγάπη, τη φύση, ακόµη και τον Θεό. Εικονογράφησε ο ίδιος τις εκτυπώσεις του µε ιδιόµορφες, φανταστικές και πολύχρωµες οπτασίες.

William Blake was a poet, painter and typographer. His contemporaries ignored him, despite his significant talent. Only later was he appreciated, especially as a visionary of good morals. His works describe love, nature, and even God. He illustrated the editions of his own works with quirky, fantastic and colourful visions.

III. Не хулил меня, не славил Анна Ахматова (1889–1966) Не хулил меня, не славил, Как друзья и как враги. Только душу мне оставил И сказал: побереги.

Η Άννα Ακχµάτοβα είναι η πιο σηµαντική Ρωσίδα ποιήτρια. Παρά το γεγονός ότι εκτιµήθηκε πολύ στην Ευρώπη, κατηγορήθηκε για το έργο της από τις Σοβιετικές Αρχές. Τον µοναδικό της γιο Λεβ, τον εξόρισαν στη Σιβηρία. Οι στίχοι της φανερώνουν µε βαθιά ειλικρίνεια τις ανθρώπινες σχέσεις, παρ’ όλη τη διαύγεια και λιτότητά τους. Το 1965, το Πανεπιστήµιο της Οξφόρδης τής απένειµε τιµητικό Διδακτορικό για τη µεγάλη της προσφορά. Ακολούθησαν δε πολλές εκδόσεις και ξένες µεταφράσεις των έργων της.

Anna Akhmatova is arguably the most important Russian poet. Although highly regarded in Europe, her work was largely condemned or banned by Soviet authorities in her homeland over the span of many decades. Her only son Lev was exiled to Siberia. Her lyrics reveal human relationships with deep sincerity, despite their clarity and austerity.

In 1965, the University of Oxford awarded Anna Akhmatova an honorary doctorate for her prolific literary contribution. Many editions and foreign translations of her works followed.

Ο Johann Wolfgang von Goethe ήταν ποιητής, θεατρικός συγγραφέας, κριτικός τέχνης και επιστήµονας. Υπήρξε ο κορυφαίος ποιητής της Γερµανίας, και τα έργα του, µαζί µε την ιδεολογία τους, επηρέασαν κινήµατα σε ολόκληρη την Ευρώπη. Στο πρώτο ποίηµα (Mignon), περιγράφει µε έντονη αναστάτωση τον ερωτικό πόθο για κάποιο µακρινό πρόσωπο. Τούτοι οι σύντοµοι στίχοι, γεµάτοι πάθος, έλκυσαν πολλούς σηµαντικούς συνθέτες για να τους µελοποιήσουν. Στο δεύτερο ποίηµα υµνεί τη φύση, τα λουλούδια και την αγαπηµένη του, που µε την παρουσία της ξυπνά µέσα του τραγούδια και χορούς.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was a poet, playwright, art critic and scientist. He was Germany's leading poet, and his works, along with their ideology, influenced movements throughout Europe. In the first poem (Mignon), he describes with intense passion the erotic desire for a distant person. These short lyrics, full of passion, attracted many important composers to set them to music. In the second poem, he praises nature, flowers and his beloved, who with her presence awakens in him songs and dances.

Προχτὲς ποὺ µοὖπες δκυὸ λόγια στὸ πόδιν Πὼν τὂρπιζα καθόλου νὰ σοῦ µπλάσω, Ἐπκιάστικα σγιὰν σγιὰν ρίφιν στὸ τζ'υπόδιν, Τέθκοιον τὸ δεῖσ σου, πὼν ἒν γιὰ νὰ, έν γιὰ νὰ πνάσω.

Ο Δηµήτρης Λιπέρτης σπούδασε πρώτα στη Λάρνακα, πριν φύγει για τη Βηρυτό, όπου µελέτησε ξένες γλώσσες – Αγγλικά και Γαλλικά. Αργότερα, στην Νεάπολη και Αθήνα ασχολήθηκε µε τη φιλοσοφία, ακόµη και µε τη Θεολογία. Αγάπησε τους απλούς ανθρώπους της Κύπρου, και θέλησε να τους πλησιάσει, γράφοντας στη δική του διάλεκτο. Στα Τζυπριώτικα Τραούθκια, του 1923, ίσως να βρήκε τον αληθινό του εαυτό.

Dimitris Lipertis first studied in Larnaca before leaving for Beirut, where he studied foreign languages – English and French. Later, in Naples and Athens, he studied philosophy and theology. He loved the ordinary people of Cyprus, and wanted to meet and reach them, hence, he wrote in his own dialect. In Τζυπριώτικα Τραούθκια (Tzypriotika Traouthkia, transl. Cypriot Songs), of 1923, he may have found his true self.

Το κλαρινέτο µαζί µε το βιολί κατέχουν εξέχουσα θέση στην ελληνική λαϊκή µουσική. Ήθελα να το χρησιµοποιήσω – αλλά όχι µόνο. Έτσι, στο τέλος έγινε ένα µείγµα, προσαρµόζοντας τον «Θρήνο» σε ελληνικό ύφος και την «Απελευθέρωση» σε ένα πολύ πιο δυτικό ιδίωµα. Ο τίτλος Dialogues καθιστά σαφή την οργανική ανταλλαγή µουσικού υλικού µεταξύ των δύο οργάνων. Προσωπικά, αντιτίθεµαι στο να υποβαθµίσω το πιάνο σε συνοδευτικό ρόλο, όπως είναι ο πολιτικά ορθός κανόνας. Με τον Beethoven, το πιάνο, στη µουσική δωµατίου γίνεται ζωτικής σηµασίας και συχνά, διατηρεί ολόκληρο το µουσικό οικοδόµηµα. Μπορείτε, για παράδειγµα, να φανταστείτε µια Σονάτα για βιολί του Brahms χωρίς το πιάνο; The clarinet, together with the violin, features prominently in Greek folk music. I wanted to use this – but not this alone. So in the end, a blend occurred, bringing lament into mostly Greek territory and release into a much more western idiom.

The title Dialogues makes clear the organic exchange of musical material between the two instruments. I personally object to diminishing the piano to an accompanying role, as is the politically correct norm. Ever since Beethoven, the piano, in chamber music is pivotal, and often sustains the entire musical edifice. Could you imagine, for instance, a Brahms violin Sonata without the piano part? Οι περισσότεροι κύκλοι τραγουδιών που έχω γράψει ήταν σε αγγλικά κείµενα, περιστασιακά γερµανικά, ακόµη και ρωσικά. Ο Κύκλος Οιωνοί εµπνεύστηκε από την ελληνική ποίηση, του πολυτάλαντου ποιητή και χορευτή, Δηµήτρη Κρανιώτη. Οι στίχοι του µού έδωσαν την ώθηση και τον χώρο να τα επενδύσω µε µουσική, που δεν είναι τόσο εύκολη διαδικασία. Γιατί; Επειδή οι λέξεις και η µουσική έχουν εγγενώς διαφορετικούς ρυθµούς. Επίσης, επειδή η µουσική στο σύνολό της χρειάζεται περισσότερο χρόνο για να εκφράσει κάτι, καθώς είναι πολύ πιο «αφηρηµένη» από τη γλώσσα. Κάθε ένα από τα έξι τραγούδια κατοικεί σε έναν άλλο κόσµο, και αυτή η αντίθεση τα βοηθά να συνδεθούν – δηµιουργώντας, έτσι, έναν κύκλο.

Most of the song cycles I have written have been to English texts, occasionally German, even Russian. Omens was inspired by Greek poetry, composed by the talented poet and dancer, Dimitris Kraniotis. His verses gave me the impetus and space to set them to music – not such an easy process after all. Why? Because words and music have inherently differing rhythms. Also because music, as a whole, needs more time to express something, as it is much more “abstract” than language.

Each of the six songs inhabits another world, and this contrast helps them to be linked together – making them into a cycle.

µὲ τὴν εὐχὴ τῆς σαύρας καὶ τὴν ἠχὼ τοῦ πρόβατου στὰ πεῦκα τὰ φαράγγια. Τώρα τὸ κρύσταλλο νερὸ κυλάει καλλιρόη καί… ξεχνιέσαι πὠς ξαφνιάζεσαι καί… ριζώνεις. Ἐδῶ, ὁ ἄνθρωπος εἶναι ἥλιος. σὰν ἒρεε ὁ καιρός… µὰ τώρα ὁ νεαρὸς Κρόνος κεῖται νεκρός· νεκρὸ πουλὶ µαῦρο νερὸ µελάνυδρη κατάρα.

Κρίνος καὶ καταρράκτης Φὼς εκ φωτὸς …γιὰ νὰ µεθᾶς µὲ τὸ καινούργιο τὸ κρασὶ στὰ χείλη κεχριµπάρι.

Ἀµαζόνες γοργόνες φιδίσια κορµιὰ Μυρίνα Σµύρνη Μυτιλήνη Σελήνη τόξα καὶ σπαθιά.

Δεδοµένου ότι είχα ήδη γράψει αρκετά έργα για το πιάνο, αποφάσισα να δοκιµάσω το χέρι µου δηµιουργώντας κάτι για το βιολί – ένα όργανο µε ατελείωτες δυνατότητες. Άρχισα να συνθέτω ένα σύντοµο κοµµάτι τύπου encore, αλλά η δουλειά συνέχισε να µεγαλώνει… Τελικά εµφανίστηκε µια Σουίτα τεσσάρων κινήσεων, το Guts and Ivories, και ενώ σχεδίαζα και τα δύο µέρη, έφαγα ολόκληρα κουτιά σοκολατάκια – για έµπνευση! Ο Μότσαρτ πρέπει να το έκανε και αυτό, καθώς η αδερφή του Nannerl παρήγαγε το πρώτο, τώρα παγκοσµίως γνωστό Mozart kugeln, για τον απίστευτα προικισµένο αδερφό της. Οι ελληνικές µου ρίζες είναι εµφανείς από τους χορούς, στις τρεις, από τις τέσσερις κινήσεις. Το µελωδικό υλικό, αν και φολκλορικό – είναι δικό µου. Στον «Χορό του Δρεπανιού», σε µέτρο 5/8, ένας αρχαίος, αλλά ακόµα σχετικός ρυθµός, προσδίδει έναν αέρα γωνιακής και ενεργητικής κίνησης. Το «Νανούρισµα» που ακολουθεί, λειτουργεί ως µια αργή και τρυφερή στιγµή ανάπαυσης. Στη συνέχεια, το «Τσιφτετέλι» αντικαθιστά το σκέρτσο, µε απαλή συγχρονισµένη κλίση. Ένα φινάλε σε ύφος ενός, πλέον δηµοφιλούς Καλαµατιανού – στο οποίο εναλλάσσονται τρεις µε τέσσερις κτύποι σε κάθε µέτρο, ολοκληρώνει τον κύκλο. Αυτό το φωτεινό και χαρούµενο φινάλε δίνει τόσο στον παίκτη των εντέρινων χορδών (guts), όσο και στον παίκτη των ελεφαντόδοντων (ivories), µια ευκαιρία να λάµψει!

As I had already written quite a few works for the piano, I decided to try my hand at producing something for the violin – an instrument with endless possibilities. I started composing a short encore-type piece, but the work kept growing. Eventually, a fourmovement suite emerged, Guts and Ivories, and whilst sketching both parts, I devoured whole boxes of chocolates – for inspiration!

Mozart must have done that too, as his sister Nannerl produced the first, now worldfamous Mozart kugeln, for her amazingly gifted brother.

My Greek roots are evident from the dance rhythms in three, out of the four, movements. The melodic material, though folkloric – is my own. In the Sickle Dance, the 5/8 metre, an ancient yet still relevant rhythm, lends an air of angular and energetic drive. The Lullaby that follows, acts as a slow and tender moment of repose. Next, the Tsifteteli takes the place of a Scherzo, with its gently syncopated lilt. And to end the cycle, an ever popular Kalamatianos – alternating three with four beats to a bar. This bright and joyful Finale gives both the player of the gut strings, and the player of the ivory keys, an opportunity to shine!

Βιογραφικά σηµειώµατα | Biographical Notes ΧΡΙΣΤΟΔΟΥΛΟΣ ΓΕΩΡΓΙΑΔΗΣ Ο Χριστόδουλος Γεωργιάδης γεννήθηκε στη Λευκωσία το 1943, από γονείς µη µουσικούς. Μελέτησε πιάνο µε τον Γιώργο Αρβανιτάκη για έξι χρόνια και ταυτόχρονα άρχισε να συνθέτει. Σε ηλικία δεκατεσσάρων ετών έφυγε για ανώτερες µουσικές σπουδές στη Βιέννη. Ενώ ήταν ακόµη φοιτητής, έλαβε µέρος στον Διαγωνισµό Chopin στη Βαρσοβία, όπου του απονεµήθηκε τιµητικό δίπλωµα. Αποφοίτησε από το Πανεπιστήµιο Μουσικής και Υποκριτικής Τέχνης το 1967, µε διάκριση και βραβείο. Οι σπουδές του τον πήραν από τη Βιέννη στη Μόσχα και τελικά στη Νέα Υόρκη – όπου τον προσκάλεσε, το 1970, ο Μάνος Χατζιδάκις να µελετήσει κοντά του. Μετά από σοβαρή και εντατική δουλειά στο ρεπερτόριο του πιάνου, µελέτησε και τις παρτιτούρες ενόργανης και ορχηστρικής µουσικής. Το 1970, εγκαταστάθηκε στο Λονδίνο όπου, το 1980, παντρεύτηκε την Peta Baily και απόκτησαν έναν γιο, τον Άνθιµο. Το εγγονάκι του, Theo, είναι τώρα τριών χρονών. Για την τηλεόραση του ΡΙΚ, βιντεογράφησε γύρω στα δέκα διαφορετικά προγράµµατα, όπου παίζει, εξηγεί και εικονογραφεί τις πιο σηµαντικές εποχές όλης της δυτικής µουσικής παράδοσης. Επέστρεψε ξανά στη σκηνή µετά από χρόνια αποχής, παίζοντας έργα πλατιάς γκάµας συνθετών. Μέσα σ ’αυτά, πολλά έργα Ελλήνων, όπως του Χατζιδάκι, του Σκαλκώτα και του Ξενάκη. Ταξίδεψε σε πολλές χώρες δίνοντας ρεσιτάλ, και από το 1989 ξεκίνησε πάλι να συνθέτει, µετά από διακοπή τριάντα χρόνων. Ηχογράφησε έξι διαφορετικά προγράµµατα για το BBC Radio 3, και ταυτόχρονα πολλά άλλα έργα σε ψηφιακούς δίσκους για ιδιωτικές εταιρείες. Διάφοροι διαγωνισµοί πιάνου τον προσκάλεσαν σαν µέλος της κρητικής επιτροπής τους, και επί του παρόντος είναι ο εξεταστής και καλλιτεχνικός διευθυντής του Λυκείου Ελληνίδων, στη Λάρνακα. Το ονόµασε Treasured Island και είχε την πρεµιέρα του στο Λονδίνο και στην Κύπρο. Μαζί µε τον νεαρό Κύπριο πιανίστα Κυριάκο Σουρουλλά, ηχογράφησαν, το 2013, έντεκα έργα του για πιάνο σε δύο ψηφιακούς δίσκους. Μέχρι σήµερα, έχει γράψει πάνω από 75 έργα, πολλά για πιάνο, αλλά και για µικρά και για µεγάλα σύνολα. Για να γιορτάσει τα 75α του γενέθλια, οργάνωσε συναυλία στο Ελληνικό Κέντρο του Λονδίνου, µε έξι έργα του, στην οποία έλαβε και ο ίδιος µέρος. Φέτος, εγκλεισµένος στο σπίτι του στο βόρειο Λονδίνο, σύνθεσε µεταξύ άλλων και το έργο Corona Trio για βιολί, βιολοντσέλο και πιάνο. Από το 1980 και µετά, έγινε χορτοφάγος, και έχει δείξει ζωντανό ενδιαφέρον για τις θρησκείες και απόψεις ζωής των Ινδιών και της Κίνας, µέσω διαλογισµού. Αγαπά τους περιπάτους στη φύση, πειραµατίζεται µε τη µαγειρική, και οργανώνει τακτικές µουσικές συναντήσεις στο σπίτι του, στο βόρειο Λονδίνο.

Christodoulos Georgiades must be the most versatile Greek pianist and composer around, with a repertoire that spans 400 years. His output includes several recordings, the world premiere of the Skalkottas Concertino, many BBC broadcasts including the World Service and lecture-recitals for television.

On his 50th birthday, he gave a special concert with 50 works which traced the piano repertoire from 1591 until the present day. Since 1989, he has composed over 75 works, ranging from children’s pieces to opera, in addition to publishing three books of piano music. In 2006, a CD with seven of his works was released, followed in 2007 by a live recording of the premiere of his Piano Concerto.

Amongst the performers of his works are Marios Papadopoulos and the Oxford Philomusica, Patricia Rozario and the Moscow Soloists under the direction of Yuri Bashmet. In March 2010, he was featured as the Cypriot composer to represent his country at a concert given at the British Museum on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Cyprus.

In London, the BBC invited him to record several diverse recital programmes, including much Greek piano music. He was also featured on the World Service, performing works

by Schumann and Chopin in a live transmission, broadcast all over the world.

Amongst his more popular venues were ten lecture-recitals commissioned by RIK (Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation) to present a variety of musical styles, but in simple terms. He went about it performing on the piano, talking as well as explaining the basic rudiments, common to all music. But most importantly – communicating the ‘joy of music’.

During 2011, in recognition of his services to music, the President of Cyprus honoured Christodoulos Georgiades with a lifelong grant.

Together with the young pianist Kyriacos Souroullas, he has recently recorded eleven of his major piano works on a double CD.

He is currently the Examiner and Artistic Director of the Lykion Ton Hellinidon in Cyprus and every August, he holds a seminar in Vienna, where he is also a jury member of the Panmusica Piano Competition.

In the year of this 75th birthday, the Hellenic Centre in London honoured Christodoulos Georgiades with a special concert, devoted entirely to his own output and in which he also took part as a pianist.

During the lockdown in 2020 and having to cancel all travel and musical activities, he has been composing profusely in his isolation. Among these new works, a piano trio entitled Corona Trio – which hardly needs any explanation.

After several ‘dietary experiments’, he decided to become a vegetarian in 1980, and has remained so to this day. Parallel to this, he has also been attracted to several Eastern schools of thought, resulting in the practice of meditation.

ΤΑΣΟΥΛΑ ΒΟΡΚΑ Η Τασούλα Βορκά γεννήθηκε στη Λευκωσία. Παίζει πιάνο και έχει διδαχθεί θεωρία, αρµονία, ιστορία και µορφολογία της µουσικής. Έχει πτυχίο κλασικού τραγουδιού κι έχει ερµηνεύσει αριθµό λόγιων τραγουδιών (lied), καθώς, επίσης, και ρόλους και άριες, τόσο από κλασικές και σύγχρονες όπερες και οπερέτες, όσο και από ορατόρια και µιούζικαλ, στην Κύπρο, στη Βουλγαρία, στην Ιταλία, στην Αυστρία, στην Αγγλία, στην Ελλάδα, στη Ρουµανία και στη Βόρεια Κορέα. Tasoula Vorká was born in Lefkosia. She has studied piano, theory, harmony, history and morphology of music and she holds a degree in classical singing. She has performed roles, arias and songs from classical and contemporary operas, operettas, oratorios, lieder and musicals in Cyprus, Austria, Italy, Bulgaria, England, Greece, Romania and North Korea.

She has already performed the roles of Belinda and First Witch in Henry Purcell’s opera Dido and Aeneas, Amore, in Christoph Willibald Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice, Genovieffa, in Giacomo Puccini’s Suor Angelica, First Elf, in Felix Mendelssohn’s Midsummer Night's Dream and Hora, in Polys Charalambous’s The Birth of Aphrodite. Additionally, Tasoula Vorká has performed excerpts from operas such as La Traviata, Rigoletto, Don Giovanni (Giuseppe Verdi), L’elixir d’amore, Lucia di Lammermoor, Norma (Gaetano Donizetti), Die Zauberflöte, Idomeneo (Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart), La Boheme (Gioacomo Puccini), La Sοnnambula, Montecchi e Capuleti (Vincenzo Bellini), Almira (Frederic Handel) and from oratorios, such as Messiah (Handel), Passio Secundum Joannem (Johann Sebastian Bach) and Oratorio de Noel (Camille Saint-Saëns). In regards to musicals, Tasoulla has participated in productions of The Little Mermaid, Together, One Day in December, The Minotaur’s Show and has loaned her voice to the character of Fiona in Shrek.

Tasoula Vorká is a soloist of the Cyprus Opera Organization (C.O.O.) and often cooperates as a soloist with The Voice of Kyrenia and Leandros Sitaros choirs.

Furthermore, she has collaborated with the Athens Sinfonietta of the National Opera of Greece, led by George Aravidis and the Paphos Music School.

She participated in the North Korean National Festival, where she collaborated with the North Korean Symphony Orchestra. There, she received first prize for her performance in a symphonic work by Adamos Katsantonis and an award in the category of classical vocal duets.

Her collaborations include renowned personalities, such as the Bulgarian director Plamen Kartalov, the Italian director Paolo Baiocco and numerous conductors such as Stefan Boyadzhiev, Alkis Baltas, George Aravidis, George Kountouris, Francis Guy and Yiannis Hadjiloizou.

Apart from her performing activities, she is a vocal teacher at the Future Academy of Arts, while, at the same time, she studies voice with her mentor Marios Andreou. Her future appearances include the leading role (Maria) in the musical The Sound of Music (October, 2020) and the role of Susanna from Mozart’s opera Le nozze di Figaro.

In addition to her music career, Ms. Vorká holds a degree in History and Philosophy of Science from the National and Kapodestrian University of Athens, Greece, as well as an MBA from the Cyprus International Institute of Management.

ΜΑΡΚΟΣ ΚΛΕΟΒΟΥΛΟΥ Ο βαρύτονος Μάρκος Κλεόβουλου γεννήθηκε στην Κύπρο, το 1989. Σπούδασε µε υποτροφία στο Εθνικό Ωδείο Αθηνών, στο παράρτηµα της Λεµεσού, υπό την καθοδήγηση της Ιόλης Μουστερή, αποκτώντας Δίπλωµα Μονωδίας και Κλασικού Τραγουδιού. Συνέχισε τις σπουδές του στο Conservatorio di Musica Giuseppe Verdi, στο Μιλάνο, µε την Vitalba Mosca, απ' όπου και απέκτησε πτυχίο στο Λυρικό Τραγούδι και Μουσικό Θέατρο µε Διάκριση. Είναι γνωστός για την επί σκηνής άνεσή του σε κωµικούς ρόλους, έχοντας ερµηνεύσει ρόλους, όπως αυτούς του Le Chat και Le Canape στην όπερα του Ravel L 'enfant et les sortileges µε τη Συµφωνική Ορχήστρα του Μιλάνου, υπό τη διεύθυνση του Pietro Semenzato, του Umberto στην La Serva Padrona του Pergolesi, για το Giugno Musicale di San Maurizio, σε σκηνοθεσία Massimo Fiocchi Malaspina και ερµηνεύοντας τον οµώνυµο ρόλο στην όπερα του Rossini Il Signor Bruschino, µε την ιστορική ορχήστρα του Μιλάνου Orchestra dei Pomeriggi Musicali, υπό τη διεύθυνση του Pietro Semenzato. Έχει παρακολουθήσει masterclasses από µεγάλους καλλιτέχνες, όπως ο Mihail Lanskoj, ο Heinrich Steinhöffel, ο Antoine Gindt, ο David Moss και ο Salvatore Sciarrino.

Baritone Markos Kleovoulou was born in Cyprus in 1989. He studied at the National Conservatory of Athens, Limassol branch, under the guidance of Ioli Mousteri, obtaining a Diploma in Opera Singing with the maximum votes. He followed his studies at the Conservatorio di Musica Giuseppe Verdi in Milan with Vitalba Mosca, where he earned his Bachelor's and Master's degree in Opera Singing and Musical Theater, both with distinction.

He is known for his on-stage comic opera roles, having tackled roles such as those of Le Chat and Le Canape in Ravel's opera L 'enfant et les sortileges, which he sung with the Milan Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Pietro Semenzato, Umberto in La Serva Padrona by Pergolesi, a production for Giugno Musicale di San Maurizio directed by Massimo Fiocchi Malaspina and the title role of Rossini's Il Signor Bruschino with the historic Milanese Orchestra dei Pomeriggi Musicali under the direction of Pietro Semenzato.

In 2014, for the Venice Biennale, he starred in two contemporary opera productions: in Gabriele Cosmi's Magen Zeit and Claudio Gay's Tre cose a caso sull'amore under the direction of Filippo Perocco with the Ex Novo Ensemble.

In August, 2015, Markos Kleovoulou starred in Béla Bartók's thriller opera Bluebeard's Castle, in the silent film Barbablu, Un film in Undici Tonalità directed by Gianmaria Sortino, which was screened at the Auditorium Theater with LaVerdi Symphony, with Markos Kleovoulou performing live under the baton of Marco Alibrando.

A year later, he performed at the 16th International Chamber Music Festival of the Pharos Arts Foundation along with leading musicians such as Yuja Wang and Yevgeny Sudbin, while in 2017 he performed the leading role in Raffaele Sargenti's contemporary opera La stessa Barca for the Venice Biennale.

In 2019, Markos Kleovoulou performed in a Greek operetta, O Vaftistikos (The Godson)

by Theofrastos Sakellarides in a co-production of the Cyprus Theatre Organisation and the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Panayiotis Larkou.

Markos Kleovoulou has attended a number of masterclasses by renowned artists such as Mihail Lanskoj, Heinrich Steinhöffel, Antoine Gindt, David Moss and Salvatore Sciarrino.

ΝΙΚΟΣ ΠΙΤΤΑΣ Ο Νίκος Πίττας κατέχει δύο διπλώµατα από το Εθνικό Ωδείο Κύπρου, Δίπλωµα LRSM από το Royal Schools of Music, BM, MM και GPD από το Peabody Conservatory του Πανεπιστηµίου Johns Hopkins. ‘Έχει κερδίσει πρώτα βραβεία σε διαγωνισµούς στην Κύπρο, σε τρεις Παναµερικανικούς Διαγωνισµούς και σε Πανελλήνιο διαγωνισµό βιολιού, όπου τιµήθηκε µε χρυσό µετάλλιο από την UNESCO. Έχει δώσει ρεσιτάλ σε Αµερική, Ελλάδα, Ισπανία, Γερµανία, Αυστρία, Γαλλία, Αγγλία, Σκωτία, Νορβηγία, Σουηδία, καθώς και στο Προεδρικό Μέγαρο της Κύπρου. Παράλληλα, έχει εµφανιστεί σε πολιτιστικές εκδηλώσεις των Ηνωµένων Εθνών και έχει συµµετάσχει σε διάφορες πολιτιστικές και φιλανθρωπικές εκδηλώσεις. Nikos Pittas holds two diplomas from Ethnikon Odeon, Cyprus, a LRSM Certificate, as well as the degrees of BMus, MMus and GPD from the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University. He has received various scholarships and Awards, and won several competitions. Mr. Pittas has given Recitals in numerous countries, such as Cyprus, Greece, USA, Spain, Norway, Germany, Austria and France. He has appeared equally as a member and a soloist with the European Union Chamber Orchestra, the Moravian Philharmonic, the Cyprus State Orchestra, the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony, the Concert Artists of Baltimore, the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Mid-Atlantic Symphony, the Alexandria Symphony of Washington DC, the Orquesta Simfonica de Castilla y Leon, the Thessaloniki State Orchestra, the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and the Pharos Soloists. He has appeared in concerts by the non-profit organization Ledra Music Soloists, notably the series featuring L. v. Beethoven’s complete works for violin and piano with pianist Nicolas Costantinou (2013–14).

Nikos Pittas is currently a principal member of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra and a violin professor with the Cyprus Youth Orchestra.

ΝΑΤΑΛΗ ΝΕΟΦΥΤΟΥ Η Νάταλη Νεοφύτου γεννήθηκε στην Κύπρο το 1991. Από́ πολύ µικρή ηλικία, άρχισε µαθήµατα πιάνου, όµποε και θεωρίας στο Εθνικό Ωδείο Κύπρου. Στη συνέχεια, σπούδασε όµποε στο Guildhall School of Music and Drama του Λονδίνου, µε καθηγητές τους Richard Simpson, David Walter, Gordon Hunt και Nicholas Daniel, όπου απέκτησε πτυχίο στην εκτέλεση οργάνου. Ακολούθως, έχοντας λάβει υποτροφία, άρχισε τις µεταπτυχιακές της σπουδές στη Βασιλική Ακαδηµία Μουσικής του Λονδίνου, υπό την καθοδήγηση της Melanie Ragge (όµποε) και της Sue Bohling (Αγγλικό κόρνο), απ' όπου και αποφοίτησε µε Άριστα το 2013. Κατά τη διάρκεια των σπουδών της, έλαβε το Α’ βραβείο στον ετήσιο διαγωνισµό Leila Oboe Prize (Λονδίνο) και έχει συνεργαστεί µε διακεκριµένους µαέστρους, όπως οι Gustavo Dudamel, Gianandrea Noseda, Michael Tilson Thomas, Vladimir Jurowski και Takuo Yuasa. Πρόσφατα, για δύο συνεχόµενες χρονιές, έλαβε µαζί µε τον Nihat Ağdaç το βραβείο/χορηγία από το Φιλανθρωπικό Ίδρυµα Stelios, στα πλαίσια των βραβείων Stelios Bi-Communal Awards (2016 και 2017) για τη δηµιουργία της Ορχήστρας Μουσικής Δωµατίου Κύπρου, η οποία αποτελείται από επαγγελµατίες Ελληνοκύπριους και Τουρκοκύπριους µουσικούς. Την άνοιξη του 2017, συνεργάστηκε µε τη Φιλαρµονική του Βερολίνου, στα πλαίσια του Πάφος 17 όπου µουσικοί της προαναφερθείσας ορχήστρας µοιράστηκαν τη σκηνή µε µουσικούς της Φιλαρµονικής του Βερολίνου, για µια συναυλία µε τίτλο #UnitedByMusic. Η Νάταλη είναι το πρώτο όµποε και η καλλιτεχνική διευθύντρια της Ορχήστρας Μουσικής Δωµατίου Κύπρου, καθώς επίσης και µέλος του µουσικού συνόλου Quintus Ensemble. Επί του παρόντος, είναι καθηγήτρια όµποε στο Τµήµα Μουσικών Σπουδών του Ευρωπαϊκού Πανεπιστηµίου, καθώς και στα Μουσικά Σχολεία Κύπρου.

Natalie Neophytou was born in Cyprus in 1991. From a very young age she started piano, oboe and theory lessons at the National Conservatory of Cyprus. She then studied oboe at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, under the tutelage of Richard Simpson, David Walter, Gordon Hunt and Nicholas Daniel, where she was awarded a degree in instrumental performance. Having received a scholarship, she subsequently began her postgraduate studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London, under the guidance of Melanie Ragge (oboe) and Sue Bohling (English horn), from where she graduated with honours in 2013.

During her studies she received the first prize in the annual Leila Oboe Prize Competition (London) and has collaborated with distinguished conductors such as Gustavo Dudamel, Gianandrea Noseda, Michael Tilson Thomas, Vladimir Jurowski and Takuo Yuasa. At the same time, she has participated in various masterclasses with professors such as,

Thomas Intermuler (Oboe Corfu Academy) and Jean Louis Capezzali (Tibor Varga Music Academy, Switzerland).

Natalie Neophytou has collaborated with the ERT National Symphony Orchestra, the Orion Orchestra, the London Arts Orchestra, the Aleph Chamber Orchestra and the London Young Music Symphony Orchestra. She often collaborates as an extra member with the Cyprus State Orchestra.

Recently, together with Nihat Ağdaç, and for two consecutive years (2016 and 2017), she was a recipient of the Stelios Bi-Communal Awards, awarded by the Stelios Philanthropic Foundation, for the creation of the Cyprus Chamber Orchestra (CCO), which consists of professional Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot musicians. In the spring of 2017, she collaborated with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra at the Pafos 17, where musicians from the aforementioned orchestra shared the stage with musicians from the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra for a concert entitled #UnitedByMusic.

Natalie Neophytou is the first oboe and the Artistic Director of the CCO, as well as a member of the Quintus Ensemble. She is currently a Professor of Oboe at the Department of Music Studies at the European University, as well as at the Music Schools of Cyprus.

ΓΙΩΡΓΟΣ ΓΕΩΡΓΙΟΥ Έχοντας επευφηµηθεί για τις γεµάτες ενεργητικότητα και έµπνευση ερµηνείες του, ο κλαρινετίστας Γιώργος Γεωργίου έχει ξεχωρίσει τόσο στο κλασικό, όσο και στο σύγχρονο ρεπερτόριο. Με εµφανίσεις σε συναυλίες και ρεσιτάλ σε Ευρώπη, Μέση Ανατολή και ΗΠΑ, ο Γιώργος Γεωργίου έχει συνεργαστεί µε διεθνούς φήµης µουσικούς, όπως ο θρυλικός τσελίστας Rohan de Saram, το Prazak String Quartet, το Apple Hill String Quartet, το Chilingirian String Quartet, ο βιολονίστας Movses Pogossian και έχει εµφανιστεί ως σολίστ µε τη σπουδαία ορχήστρα Moscow Virtuosi, υπό τη διεύθυνση του Vladimir Spivakov, και στην Κύπρο µε την Ορχήστρα Commandaria. Το πάθος του για την εξερεύνηση νέου ρεπερτορίου για το κλαρινέτο οδήγησε τον κ. Γεωργίου σε συνεργασίες µε ορισµένους από τους σηµαντικότερους Κύπριους και ξένους συνθέτες, ενώ, παράλληλα, ερµήνευσε πολλά έργα σε πρώτη παγκόσµια εκτέλεση, αρκετά από τα οποία είναι αφιερωµένα σε αυτόν. Hailed for his energetic and inspirational performances, the Cypriot clarinettist George Georgiou enjoys a career as a classical and contemporary clarinettist. He appeared in many solo concerts and recitals in Europe, the Middle East and the USA. He has collaborated with prominent musicians such as the legendary cellist Rohan de Saram, the Prazak Quartet, the Apple Hill String Quartet, the Chilingirian String Quartet, the violinist Movses Pogossian and he appeared as a soloist with the Commandaria Orchestra and the Moscow Virtuosi under the baton of Vladimir Spivakov.

In his research for new repertoire, George started commissioning works for clarinet and thus far, he has collaborated with highly talented composers from Cyprus and abroad.

He has premiered several works featuring the clarinet (with many dedicated to him).

He is a member of the Georgiou Georgieva Duo, the Lyrical Noise Ensemble, the Evohe Wind Quintet, the Chronos Contemporary Music Ensemble as well as musician-inresidence at the Avaton Contemporary Music Festival (Cyprus). He holds the position of clarinet professor at the University of Nicosia. He is the Artistic Director of the Music at the Museum Concert Series and the Georgiou & Friends Concert Series, as well as the founder of the Cyprus Clarinet Studio.

George Georgiou is a graduate of City University, London, where he studied clarinet with Julian Farrell and Joy Farel at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He is also an MBA graduate from the Neapolis University Paphos, Cyprus, and a member of Mensa Cyprus.

His busy profile gained him international recognition and he has become a Fratelli Patricola Clarinet Artist, a Silverstein Ligature Artist and a Marca Reeds Artist. He records for Hook Records. George Georgiou was recently appointed Cyprus Chair of the International Clarinet Association. Future engagements include recitals in Cyprus, London, the Canary Islands and the USA.

ΓΚΕΡΓΚΑΝΑ ΓΚΕΟΡΓΚΙΕΒΑ Γεννηθείσα στη Βουλγαρία, η Γκεργκάνα Γκεοργκίεβα ξεκίνησε µαθήµατα πιάνου και µουσικής σε ηλικία έξι ετών, και όντας δέκα ετών γίνεται δεκτή στη Μουσική Σχολή του Pancho Vladigerov, στο Μπουργάς. Κατά τη διάρκεια των σπουδών της, απέσπασε διάφορες διακρίσεις σε σεµινάρια, συναυλίες και διαγωνισµούς, συµπεριλαµβανοµένου του 16ου Διαγωνισµού Ερµηνείας Varban Varbanov, όπου κέρδισε και το πρώτο βραβείο. Το 2002, η Γκεργκάνα έκανε το ντεµπούτο της στο Πρώτο Κοντσέρτο για πιάνο του Prokofiev µε τη Φιλαρµονική Ορχήστρα του Μπουργάς, υπό τη διεύθυνση του Ivan Kojuharov. Bulgarian-born Gergana Georgieva started receiving piano and music lessons at the age of six, and at the age of ten, she was accepted at the Pancho Vladigerov Music School in Burgas. During her studies, she was the recipient of many awards at various seminars, concerts and competitions, including the 16th Performance Competition Varban Varbanov where she won first prize.

In 2002, Gergana Georgieva made her debut with the Burgas Philharmonic Orchestra, performing Prokofiev’s First Piano Concerto under the baton of Ivan Kojuharov.

Subesequently, she continued her studies at the National Music Academy of Sofia Pancho Vladigerov, attending piano classes with Stella Dimitrova-Maistorova and Ilia Chernaev. During her studies at the Academy, she performed numerous concertos by Mozart, Beethoven and Schumann with Sofia’s Academic Symphony Orchestra. As a member of a piano trio, she also participated in national competitions for chamber music, winning top prizes. Gergana Georgieva participated in the Contemporary Music Festival Pianissimo, where she performed preludes and fugues by Shostakovich and Shchedrin, and she has attended various masterclasses with distinguished pianists such as Paolo Police, Cyprien Katsaris and Simon Trpčeski. Since 2008, she has been living and working in Cyprus, where she continues to participate in concerts and to collaborate with Cypriot and foreign artists, as well as with the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra. She is a member of the Georgiou-Georgieva Duo.

ΠΛΩΤΙΝΟΣ ΜΙΚΡΟΜΑΤΗΣ Ο Πλωτίνος Μικροµάτης είναι σολίστ πιάνου, διπλωµατούχος του Βασιλικού Κολλεγίου Μουσικής του Λονδίνου, της Σχολής Μουσικής και Θεάτρου Guildhall και κάτοχος πτυχίου Master από το Πανεπιστήµιο του Λονδίνου. Concert pianist Plotinos Micromatis holds performance diplomas from the Royal College of Music, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and a Master’s degree from the University of London.

He has given concerts in Cyprus, Russia, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Greece and Great Britain and has performed as soloist with orchestras such as the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra, the Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Netherlands Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Lewis & Clarke University Symphony Orchestra (the USA).

His partnerships with singers and other professional musicians led to numerous chamber music performances. Plotinos Micromatis has also collaborated with the Greek National Opera, the Thessaloniki Opera and the National Theatre of Greece.

Αργότερα, τον Δεκέµβριο, συµµετείχε σε µια συναυλία µουσικής δωµατίου µε τίτλο «Μουσική µε τους κορυφαίους», όπου παρέα µε τον εξάρχοντα της Κρατικής Ορχήστρας Θεσσαλονίκης, Σίµο Παπάνα, την πρώτη βιόλα της Φιλαρµονικής του Βερολίνου, Maté Szűcs, και τον πρώτο τσελίστα της Φιλαρµονικής της Βιέννης, Péter Somodari, ερµήνευσε κουαρτέτα για πιάνο των Mozart, Schumann και Brahms. Προς τιµή των 250 χρόνων από τη Γέννηση του Beethoven, ο Δρ. Κωσταντίνου θα ερµηνεύσει, τον Δεκέµβρη, τις τρεις τελευταίες σονάτες για πιάνο. He has given numerous concerts in Austria, Cyprus, Hungary, Germany, Greece, Finland, France, Lebanon, Portugal, Turkey, Switzerland, the UK and the USA and has performed at London’s Wigmore Hall, the Brahms Saal of the Musikverein in Vienna, the BeethovenHaus in Bonn, and the Grand Hall of the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. He has been invited to perform at international festivals around Europe such as the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival, the Oulunsalo Soi Music Festival (Finland), the Gödöllő Chamber Music Festival (Hungary), the Ledra Music Soloists International Chamber Music Festival and the Kypria Festival (Cyprus). His debut in London’s prestigious Wigmore Hall was received with favourable reviews. He has performed with the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Russian Chamber Philharmonic St. Petersburg, the Budapest Concert Orchestra, the Failoni Chamber Orchestra, and the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra, with maestros such as Konrad von Abel, Juri Gilbo, Esa Heikkilä, Notis Georgiou, Spiros Pisinos, Maciej Zoltowski and Ayis Ioannides.

Dr Costantinou enjoys collaborating with a diverse range of instrumentalists and singers alike. His chamber music collaborations often include internationally acclaimed musicians and singers such as the violinists Vilmos Szabadi, Chloë Hanslip, Simos Papanas, Nikos Pittas, Wolfgang Schroeder, Kazuhiro Tagaki, violist Maté Szűcs, the cellists Gustav Rivinius, Erkki Rautio, David Cohen, Péter Somodari, Tytus Miecznikowski, flautists János Bálint, Virginie Bove, oboist Francesco Quaranta, clarinettist Gábor Varga, and the Meta4 and Akadémia String Quartet. His passion for Art-Song has led to collaborations with singers such as sopranos Margarita Elia, Zoe Nicolaidou, Theodora Raftis, mezzosoprano Elli Aloneftou, tenor Christian Zenker and baritone Kyros Patsalides.

He regularly performs works by Cypriot composers in Cyprus and abroad including a number of world premieres. Dr. Costantinou has recently performed for the first time in Cyprus Beethoven’s complete works for piano and violin (2013–14) with violinist Nikos Pittas and for piano and cello (2015–16) with cellist Péter Somodari.

In 2018, Nicolas Costantinou gave an all-Chopin recital in Larnaca, Lefkosia, Beirut and London, and appeared in a chamber music recital entitled «Music with the Leaders» where, along with the concertmaster of the Thessaloniki Symphony Orchestra, Simos Papanas, the first viola of the Berliner Philharmoniker, Maté Szűcs, and the first cello of the Wiener Philharmoniker, Péter Somodari, he interpreted works by Mozart, Schumann and Brahms.

To commemorate the 250 anniversary of the birth of L. v Beethoven, Dr. Costantinou will perform, in December this year, the three last piano sonatas of the composer.

Nicolas Costantinou graduated from the Greek Hellenic Academy of Music, the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music in Szeged, the Ferenc Liszt University of Music in Budapest summa cum laude and holds a Master of Music in Performance from the U.S. Cleveland Institute of Music. Recently, he was awarded a Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.) from London’s Royal College of Music under the supervision of Prof. Paul Banks, Dr. Julian

Jacobson and Dr. Jane Roper. His thesis is entitled The Chamber Music of Ernő Dohnányi; Tradition, Innovation and ‘Hungarianness’. He has also studied with Márta Gulyás, Dr Daniel Shapiro, Sándor Falvai, Ferenc Kerek, Tania Economou and Wanda Economou-Constantinou and he has participated in masterclasses held by acknowledged pianists such as Dmitri Bashkirov, Nicolas Economou, Vadim Suchanov and Ferenc Rados.

He is currently teaching promising new talent in his home country. Many of his students have won numerous prizes at international piano competitions, and have participated in piano master-classes with renowned professors. Some of his students have been accepted into highly esteemed academies and universities, amongst them, the Reina Sofía Escuela Superior de Música in Madrid, the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt in Weimar, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow, the Purcell School and the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. Dr. Costantinou is currently a lecturer at the University of Nicosia and he also teaches at the Nicosia Music Schools.
