Το Ledra Music Soloists (LMS) είναι ένα μη κερδοσκοπικό νόμιμο σώμα που δημιουργήθηκε με σκοπό να προωθήσει την κλασική μουσική στην Κύπρο και στο εξωτερικό, φέρνοντας σε επαφή καταξιωμένους καλλιτέχνες, ώστε να συνεργαστούν, να ανταλλάξουν εμπειρίες και να παρουσιάσουν τη δουλειά τους σε συναυλίες.

ΣΗΜΕΙΩΣΕΙΣ ΠΡΟΓΡΑΜΜΑΤΟΣ Σονάτα σε Ντο μείζονα, KV330 (1783) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791) Η Σονάτα του Mozart σε Ντο μείζονα είναι η πρώτη από τις τρεις σονάτες (οι άλλες δύο είναι οι σονάτες σε Λα μείζονα, KV331 και Φα μείζονα, KV332) που ο συνθέτης έγραψε όταν εγκαταστάθηκε μόνιμα στη Βιέννη, το 1781. Έρευνες, όμως, έχουν δείξει ότι ο Mozart ήδη δούλευε πάνω στις σονάτες αυτές, κατά τη διάρκεια τρίμηνης παραμονής του στο Σάλτσμπουργκ, από τον Ιούλιο έως τον Οκτώβριο του 1783. Σκοπός αυτού του ταξιδιού ήταν να συστήσει τη νέα του σύζυγο Constanze Weber (1762–1842) στην οικογένειά του (είχαν παντρευτεί στις 4 Απριλίου 1782). Την επόμενη χρονιά, η βιεννέζικη εταιρεία Artaria είχε εκδώσει τις τρεις σονάτες μαζί, όπως επιθυμούσε, προφανώς, και ο συνθέτης. Ο Alan Tyson περιγράφει τη Σονάτα ως «αισιόδοξη», «ακτινοβολώντας μια ατμόσφαιρα γοητείας και αφέλειας», ενώ ο Heartz τη χαρακτηρίζει ως «την πιο αιθέρια από όλες τις σονάτες του Mozart». Πράγματι, η Σονάτα είναι συνεχώς «οικεία» και «χαριτωμένη», ενώ παράλληλα διακρίνεται από τη «λεπτότητα της λεπτομέρειάς» της, όπως επισημαίνει ο Stanley Sadie. Η πρώτη κίνηση, Allegro moderato σε μέτρο 2/4, «αναπτύσσεται από τα πιο ευαίσθητα νήματα, έτσι ώστε φαίνεται ότι αιωρείται στον αέρα, όπως ένας αραχνοΰφαντος ιστός, το φθινόπωρο» (Heartz). Πράγματι, το έργο είναι άφθονο σε ευαίσθητες cantabile μελωδίες που απαιτούν μια ήρεμη και ομοιόμορφη αφή, καθώς και ελαφρότητα και ευελιξία. Η δεύτερη κίνηση, Andante cantabile σε μέτρο 3/4, είναι απαλή και γαλήνια, επισκιασμένη, μόνο παροδικά, από ένα βαθυστόχαστο μεσαίο τμήμα στην ελάσσονα. Αξίζει να σημειωθεί ότι η coda τεσσάρων μέτρων ήταν μια απόφαση της τελευταίας στιγμής· προστέθηκε, προφανώς, μόλις πριν από τη δημοσίευση, καθώς δε φαίνεται πουθενά στο χειρόγραφο. Η τελική κίνηση, Allegretto σε μέτρο 2/4, ακολουθεί μια ελεύθερη μορφή rondo και είναι πνευματώδης και λαμπρή στο σύνολό της.

Σονατίνα, M. 40 Maurice Ravel (1875–1937) Το 1903, το βραχυχρόνιο αγγλογαλλικό πολιτιστικό περιοδικό Weekly Critical Review, το οποίο δημοσιευόταν στο Παρίσι, είχε ανακοινώσει στον Τύπο, διαγωνισμό για τη σύνθεση της πρώτης κίνησης μιας σονάτας πιάνου σε Φα δίεση ελάσσονα, που δε θα υπερέβαινε τα 75 μέτρα σε διάρκεια. Με την ενθάρρυνση του στενού φίλου του, μουσικολόγου και κριτικού Michel Dimitri Calvocoressi (1877–1944), ο Ravel αποφάσισε να συμμετάσχει στον διαγωνισμό. Τελικά, ο διαγωνισμός ακυρώθηκε, καθώς ο Ravel φαινόταν να είναι ο μόνος συμμετέχων και η υποβληθείσα του κίνηση υπερέβη τον καθορισμένο αριθμό των μέτρων κατά εννέα. Ωστόσο, σημειώσεις στο χειρόγραφο που ο Ravel υπόβαλε, δείχνουν ότι η επιτροπή είχε αρχικά κρίνει το έργο άξιο απονομής του βραβείου και ότι ο διαγωνισμός ακυρώθηκε για άλλους λόγους. Το επόμενο έτος, ο Ravel αποφάσισε να προσθέσει δυο ακόμη κινήσεις, ολοκληρώνοντας τελικά την Sonatine τον Αύγουστο του 1905. Το έργο δημοσιεύθηκε από τον ξακουστό εκδοτικό οίκο Durand, ο οποίος απέκτησε τα δικαιώματα τον Σεπτέμβριο του 1905. Αν και οι αρχικές πωλήσεις ήταν φτωχές, ο Durand πρότεινε μια σύμβαση στον Ravel για τα αποκλειστικά δικαιώματα δημοσίευσης όλων των μελλοντικών του έργων, με αντάλλαγμα μια ετήσια αποζημίωση της τάξης των 12.000 φράγκων. Η παγκόσμια πρεμιέρα της Σονατίνας, στην πλήρη μορφή της,

πραγματοποιήθηκε στη Λυών, στις 10 Μαρτίου 1906, με την πιανίστα Paule de Lestang, ακολουθούμενη από την πρεμιέρα στο Παρίσι, στις 31 Μαρτίου, με τον Gabriel Grovlez. Ο κριτικός Joseph Canteloube de Malaret βρήκε την κίνηση Mouvement de Minuet υπέροχη, αλλά ένιωσε ότι οι εξωτερικές κινήσεις ήταν «σχετικά μικρού συναισθηματικού περιεχομένου». Παρά τις αντιρρήσεις αυτές, η Σονατίνα έγινε ένα από τα πιο δημοφιλή έργα του Ravel. Δομικά, η Σονατίνα ακολουθεί το κλασικό συμβατικό αρχέτυπο, ενώ ταυτόχρονα «επικεντρώνεται σε μια συνεπή μονοθεματική δομή, η οποία βασίζεται στο θεμελιώδες μοτίβο μιας κατιούσας τετάρτης» (Peter Jost). Στη Σονατίνα, ο Ravel αντλεί έμπνευση από προηγούμενες παραδόσεις που, συχνά, ξεπερνούν τα κλασικά πρότυπα, διατηρώντας, ταυτόχρονα, την χαρακτηριστική ατομική αρμονική του γλώσσα. Για παράδειγμα, υπάρχει μια τάση για έναν αρχαΐζοντα ήχο που επιτυγχάνεται μέσω της χρήσης του αιολικού τρόπου. Ταυτόχρονα, η Σονατίνα αποτίνει φόρο τιμής στο τέλος του δέκατου όγδοου αιώνα, ενώ παράλληλα, κάνει αναφορά στον Beethoven. Το Mouvement de Menuet και το τελικό Animé κάνουν αναφορές στη γαλλική μπαρόκ. Το Μινουέτο αναπολεί τη δημοτικότητα του αριστοκρατικού χορού, ενώ η τρίτη κίνηση είναι ένα τέλειο παράδειγμα μιας toccata, μια ακόμη αναφορά στους μεγάλους Γάλλους κλαβεσενίστες Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683–1764) και François Couperin (1668–1733), με τους οποίους ο συνθέτης αισθανόταν πνευματικά συνδεδεμένος. Ταυτόχρονα, δεν μπορεί κανείς να μην προσέξει τη σχέση με τη Σονάτα του Beethoven, quasi una fantasia, σε Ντο δίεση ελάσσονα, έργο 27/2 (1802, ευρέως γνωστή ως «Υπό το Σεληνόφως»). Και τα δύο έργα ακολουθούν τη δομή των τριών κινήσεων με μια πιο αργή πρώτη κίνηση, ένα ταπεινό, στο ύφος, οικείο μινουέτο και ένα δραματικό φινάλε στο ύφος μιας toccata. Στην πραγματικότητα, η σύνδεση με τον Beethoven γίνεται πιο εμφανής, εάν ληφθεί υπόψη το γεγονός ότι και οι δύο μεσαίες κινήσεις μοιράζονται την ίδια τονικότητα και λειτουργούν σαν ένα είδος γέφυρας, μεταξύ της πρώτης κίνησης και της τελευταίας. Επιπλέον, η παρατήρηση του Ravel στην πιανίστα Marguerite Long (1874–1966) για να παίξει το Μινουέτο στον ρυθμό της αντίστοιχης κίνησης από τη Σονάτα σε Μι ύφεση μείζονα, έργο 31/3 του Beethoven, καθιστούν την αναφορά με τον Beethoven ισχυρότερη. Την ίδια στιγμή, ο Ravel φέρεται να είχε σχολιάσει ότι το μινουέτο πρέπει να ερμηνευθεί «με ευαισθησία, αλλά όχι υπερβολικά εκλεπτυσμένα». Το Animé είναι μια επίδειξη λαμπρού δεξιοτεχνικού γραψίματος για το πιάνο. Η κίνηση ακολουθεί τη δομή σονάτας, κατά τη διάρκεια της οποίας ακούγεται όλο το προηγούμενο υλικό σε καινούριους μετασχηματισμούς.

Νυχτερινό σε Σολ ελάσσονα, έργο 37/1 (1837–39) Βαλς σε Λα ύφεση μείζονα, έργο 42 (1840) Πολωνέζα σε Λα ύφεση μείζονα, έργο 53 (1842) Fryderyk Chopin (1810–1849) Il faut chanter avec les doigts! (Πρέπει να τραγουδάµε µε τα δάχτυλά µας!) Παρόλο που δεν γνωρίζουμε επακριβώς τι ώθησε τον Chopin να κάνει αυτή την παρατήρηση, είναι σίγουρα η πιο κατάλληλη όταν πρόκειται για τα νυχτερινά. Ο μαθητής του, Karol Mikuli (1821–1897), μας πληροφορεί ότι ο Chopin έδινε στους μαθητές να μελετήσουν νυχτερινά, προκειμένου να τους βοηθήσει να μάθουν πώς να παράγουν έναν όμορφο ήχο στο πιάνο. Στις αρχές του 19ου αιώνα, το νυχτερινό, στην πραγματικότητα, συνδεόταν με έργα για φωνητικά σύνολα, τα οποία ήταν δημοφιλή σε σαλόνια και κατ’ οίκον χρήση. Αυτή η συσχέτιση ήταν καταλυτική για το πώς οι συνθέτες αντιλαμβάνονταν την εκδοχή του είδους στο πιάνο. Το είδος εμφανίστηκε για πρώτη φορά στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 1810, όταν ο Ιρλανδός συνθέτης-πιανίστας John Field (1782– 1837) άρχισε να γράφει τα πρώτα νυχτερινά συλλαµβάνοντάς τα ως µια εκδοχή του φωνητικού αυτού είδους, σαν «τραγούδια χωρίς λόγια». Ακολουθώντας το παράδειγµα του Field, ο Chopin όχι µόνο υιοθέτησε το νυχτερινό, αλλά το εµπλούτισε µάλιστα µε µια νέα γκάµα εκφραστικότητας, διατηρώντας «µια αισθητή παρουσία του φωνητικού είδους µέσα στο πιανιστικό αντίστοιχο» (J. Kallberg). Το Νυχτερινό στο αποψινό πρόγραμμα είναι το πρώτο από δύο νυχτερινά που δημοσιεύθηκαν μαζί. Τα δύο αυτά νυχτερινά χρονολογούνται από την περίοδο του ταξιδιού του Chopin, στη Μαγιόρκα. Το πρώτο γράφτηκε πριν από αυτήν την αξέχαστη ρομαντική απογοήτευση, ενώ το δεύτερο, παραδόξως αμέσως μετά. Το Νυχτερινό σε Σολ ελάσσονα μας προσφέρει έναν «νυκτερινό συλλογισμό που φαίνεται να μην έχει τέλος. Αλλά, ξαφνικά ακολουθεί μια διαφορετική και απροσδόκητη ατμόσφαιρα. Μεταφερόμαστε σε μια άλλη εικόνα: μια σειρά από συγχορδίες, ωσάν μια αυτο-κοινωνία» (Tomaszewski). Δικαίως, το μεσαίο τμήμα με το χαρακτηριστικό του ύφος, θυμίζει ένα χορικό, το οποίο έχει συχνά παρομοιαστεί με «μια προσευχή που παίζεται σε ένα υπαίθριο εκκλησιαστικό όργανο» (Hoesick Kleczyński). Η αρχική μελωδία επιστρέφει και στο τέλος, το Νυχτερινό τελειώνει στον μείζονα τρόπο, ρίχνοντας μια ακτίδα ελπίδας στον, κατά τα άλλα, σοβαρό και ελεγειακό χαρακτήρα του. Ο Chopin έγραφε βαλς καθ’ όλη τη διάρκεια της ζωής του (έγραψε συνολικά δεκαεννέα), αλλά δημοσίευσε μόνο τα οκτώ. Με εξαίρεση, ίσως, το Grande Valse Brillante, έργο 18, όλα τα υπόλοιπα βαλς δεν προορίζονταν για χορό. Αντίθετα, πρόκειται για «χορευτικά ποιήµατα», όπως τα αποκαλεί ο Blair Johnston, τα οποία «απευθύνονται στην ψυχή και όχι στο σώµα, αντανακλώντας τις διαθέσεις του συνθέτη από [...] πολύ διαφορετικές οπτικές γωνίες». Το Βαλς σε Λα ύφεση μείζονα, το πέμπτο στη σειρά, αποτελείται από πέντε διαδοχικούς χορούς, οι οποίοι είναι δραματικά δομημένοι σε ένα συνεκτικό και συναρπαστικό σύνολο. Ξεκινώντας με μια τρίλια που διαρκεί οκτώ ολόκληρα μέτρα, αυτό το υπέρτατο βαλς ξεδιπλώνεται σε ένα είδος ελεύθερης μορφής rondo, με τέσσερα ποικιλόμορφα στον χαρακτήρα βαλς και ένα συνδετικό ρεφραίν. Το πρώτο είναι ίσως το πιο ενδιαφέρον από την άποψη του ρυθμού, καθώς παίζει με το χαρακτηριστικό τριπλό μέτρο ενός βαλς. Η μελωδία φαίνεται να προχωρεί ακάθεκτη σε διπλό μέτρο πάνω από την αδυσώπητα τριπλή, σε μέτρο, συνοδεία του αριστερού χεριού. Τέτοιες πρακτικές ήταν κοινές δε στα βαλς του Chopin, αλλά ποτέ μεν τόσο απερίφραστες. Ο Jeffrey Kallberg υποστηρίζει ότι: «Για να αντιληφθεί κανείς το πνεύμα τέτοιων μερών απαιτεί, βέβαια, να κατανοήσει κανείς τον κωμικό τρόπο με τον οποίο ο Chopin χρησιμοποιεί την απλοϊκή συνοδεία. Τα βαλς του Chopin αποδίδουν το κοινωνικά προσδεδεμένο χιούμορ σε μια μουσική ιδέα.» Το συνδετικό ρεφραίν είναι μια φευγαλέα επίδειξη μη-μελωδικών περασμάτων που στροβιλίζονται

ευχάριστα. Το δεύτερο βαλς είναι σύντομο και μπορεί, ίσως, να θεωρηθεί ότι έχει αναφορές στον αυστριακό Ländler, ενώ το τρίτο φαίνεται να είναι πιο ζωηρό. Ο τέταρτος χορός βρίσκεται στη μέση του έργου και φέρνει μια σαφή αλλαγή στη διάθεση και τον ρυθμό. Με την ένδειξη sostenuto (συγκρατημένα) και την τονικότητα της Ντο ελάσσονας, το τμήμα ανθίζει σε μια από τις υπέροχες και τόσο χαρακτηριστικές μελωδίες του Chopin. Το ρεφραίν επαναφέρει τον πρώτο χορό, αλλά το επακόλουθο ρεφραίν οδηγεί σε μια τροποποιημένη παρουσίαση του τρίτου χορού, η οποία οδηγεί το κομμάτι στο μεγαλοπρεπές κορύφωμά του και το συναρπαστικό του κλείσιμο. Η Πολωνέζα σε Λα ύφεση μείζονα γράφτηκε στην πόλη Nohant το 1842, παράλληλα με την Τέταρτη Μπαλάντα και το Τέταρτο Scherzo. Παρόλο που εκπέμπει, σαφώς, τον παλμό, τη σφριγηλότητα και ιδιαίτερα τη μεγαλοπρέπεια μιας πολωνέζας, το έργο μοιάζει περισσότερο με ένα χορευτικό ποίημα, παρά με έναν πραγματικό χορό. Επικαλείται εικόνες πατριωτισμού, εθνικισμού και συχνά φαίνεται να εμπνέει εξέγερση, τόσο πολύ, ώστε σύντομα έγινε γνωστή ως ‘Ηρωική’. Η Πολωνέζα αρχίζει με ένα τολμηρό και γεμάτο ενέργεια εισαγωγικό τμήμα, το οποίο οδηγεί στο δημοφιλές, επίμονο και επιβλητικό κύριο θέμα, το οποίο σταδιακά αυξάνεται σε όγκο και ένταση. Το ακόλουθο sostenuto αποτυγχάνει να χαλαρώσει την ένταση, «περιορίζοντας ελάχιστα την εξέλιξη της αφήγησης» (Tomaszewski). Επτά εντυπωσιακές συγχορδίες σε fortissimo στην απροσδόκητη τονικότητα της Μι μείζονας, εισάγουν το μεσαίο τμήμα. Μία σειρά από στρατιωτικά σαλπίσματα πάνω σε ένα επίμονο και ανένδοτο φθίνον μοτίβο σε οκτάβες στο αριστερό χέρι ακολουθεί, αρχίζοντας απαλά και σταδιακά αυξάνεται σε όγκο και ένταση, φθάνοντας στην κορύφωση με μια απροσδόκητη μετατροπία σε Ρε δίεση μείζονα (εναρμόνιος της Μι ύφεση μείζονας, της δεσπόζουσας της Λα ύφεσης μείζονας). Μετά από μια επανάληψη, το τμήμα οδηγεί σε ένα λυρικό μέρος, το οποίο σταδιακά καταλήγει πίσω στο υπερήφανο κύριο θέμα της Πολωνέζας και του ηρωικού ύφους του έργου. Είναι ενδιαφέρον να σημειωθεί ότι σύμφωνα με μια αναφορά του μαθητή του, Adolphe Gutman (1819-1882), ο Chopin συνήθιζε να παίζει το τμήμα με τις οκτάβες χωρίς να αυξάνει σε μεγάλο βαθμό την ένταση, ενώ σύμφωνα με τον Franz Liszt, ο οποίος είδε τον Chopin να ερμηνεύει την Πολωνέζα, ο συνθέτης συχνά έπαιζε το επεισόδιο σε Φα ελάσσονα (το τμήμα που οδηγεί πίσω στο κύριο θέμα του έργου) «όπως το βροντερό τρεμούλιασμα ενός μακρινού κανονιού». Friedrich αρ. 9 …Το φιλί, (1907–1908), Gustav Klimt αρ. 12 …Ο χορός, (1988), Paula Rego Το 2008, στο πλαίσιο μιας σειράς εκδηλώσεων που σηματοδότησαν τη γαλλική Προεδρία της ΕΕ, μου ζητήθηκε να συνθέσω ένα κομμάτι μουσικής, το οποίο θα εκτελούσε ο πιανίστας Cyprien Katsaris, στη μεγάλη αίθουσα του Αρχηγείου της UNESCO, στο Παρίσι. Η ιδέα εδραιώθηκε, τελικά, στο μυαλό μου· θα υπήρχαν δύο αντιθετικά σε ύφος κομμάτια, τα οποία, στη συνέχεια, πήραν τη μορφή δύο πρελούδιων. Αυτό, επίσης, είχε την πρόσθετη διάσταση της σύνδεσής τους με εκείνη τη σημαδιακή γαλλική συλλογή πρελούδιων: οι δύο τόμοι Πρελούδιων του Debussy. Η πρόθεσή μου δεν ήταν στυλιστική. Ως αποτέλεσμα αυτών των δύο αρχικών κομματιών, αποφάσισα να συνεχίσω μέχρι να ολοκληρωθεί ένας κύκλος με δώδεκα, με το τελευταίο πρελούδιο να έχει γραφτεί το 2014. Έκτοτε, έχουν γίνει μερικές αναθεωρήσεις, όπως πρόσφατα το 2018. Κατά τη διάρκεια ολόκληρης αυτής της δεκαετίας, ένα ερώτημα υπήρχε πάντα στο μυαλό μου: πώς μοιάζει μια σύνθεση για πιάνο στον 21ο αιώνα; Αυτό είναι ιδιαίτερα σημαντικό για μένα, δεδομένης της εκπαίδευσής μου και της πολύχρονης εμπειρίας μου ως πιανίστας. PROGRAMME NOTES Sonata in C major, KV330 (1783) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791) Mozart’s Sonata in C major, is the first of three sonatas (the other two are the sonatas in A major, KV331 and F major, KV332) composed after Mozart’s permanent settlement in Vienna, in 1781.

Research has shown, though, that Mozart began work on these sonatas in Salzburg, during a three-month stay there, between July and October 1783. The purpose of the journey was to introduce his new wife, Constanze Weber (1762–1842), to the family (they had wed on April 4, 1782). The following year, the Viennese publisher Artaria engraved the three sonatas as a set, as the composer evidently had intended.

Alan Tyson describes the work as “optimistic”, “radiating an atmosphere of charm and naïveté”, while Heartz pronounces it as “the most ethereal of all Mozart’s solo sonatas”. Indeed, the Sonata is “intimate” and “graceful” throughout and is distinguished by its “refinement of detail”, as Stanley Sadie has pointed out.

The first movement, Allegro moderato in 2/4 time, “is spun out of the most delicate threads, so that it seems to float in the air like a gossamer in autumn” (Heartz). Indeed, the work is abundant in delicate cantabile melodies that require a quiet and even touch, as well as lightness and flexibility.

The second movement, Andante cantabile in 3/4 time, is gentle and serene, overshadowed, only briefly by a heart-felt middle section in the minor. It is interesting to note that the four-bar coda was an afterthought; it was evidently added just before publication, as it is missing from the autograph manuscript.

The finale, Allegretto in 2/4 time, follows a free rondo form and is witty and sparkling throughout.

Sonatine, M. 40 (1903–05) Maurice Ravel (1875–1937) In 1903, the short-lived Anglo-French Weekly Critical Review, a cultural journal published in Paris, had announced in the press a competition to compose the first movement of a piano sonata in F sharp minor, that would not exceed 75 bars in length. Upon encouragement from his close friend, musicologist and critic Michel Dimitri Calvocoressi (1877–1944), Ravel decided to enter the competition. Eventually, the competition was cancelled, as evidently Ravel seemed to be the only participant, and his submitted movement exceeded the prescribed number of bars by nine.

However, marks on Ravel’s entry manuscript indicate that the committee was originally considering the work prize-worthy, and that the competition, was later cancelled for other reasons. The following year, Ravel decided to add two more movements and eventually completed his “Sonatine” in August 1905. The work was consequently published by the renowned Durand publishing house, who acquired the rights in September 1905. Although the initial sales were poor, Durand proposed a contract to Ravel for the exclusive publication rights to all his future works in exchange for a yearly honorarium of 12,000 francs. The world premiere of the Sonatine, in its complete form, took place in Lyon on 10 March 1906 with pianist Paule de Lestang, followed by the Paris premiere on 31 March with Gabriel Grovlez. thought the Mouvement de Minuet was superb, but found the outer movements “of relatively slight emotional import”. In spite of such objections, the Sonatine became one of Ravel’s most beloved works.

Structurally, the Sonatine follows the classical conventional archetype, and at the same time, “concentrates on a consistent monothematic structure based on the fundamental motif of a falling fourth” (Peter Jost). In the Sonatine, Ravel looks for inspiration from earlier traditions that often go beyond the classical norms, while retaining the individual harmonic language for which he is so known. For instance, there is a tendency for a more archaic sound, achieved through the use of the Aeolian mode. At the same time, the Sonatine pays homage to the late eighteenth-century and also looks back to Beethoven. The Mouvement de Menuet and the final Animé make references to the French baroque. The minuet makes a reference to the earlier popularity of the aristocratic dance, while the third movement is a perfect example of a toccata, a reference to the great French clavecinistes Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683–1764) and François Couperin (1668–1733) to which the composer felt spiritually connected.

At the same time, one cannot miss the connection with Beethoven’s Sonata, quasi una fantasia, in C sharp minor, op. 27/2 (1802, popularly known as the ‘Moonlight’). Both works are written in the three movement scheme with a slower first movement, a modest, in its bearings, intimate minuet and a toccata-like fierce finale. In fact, the connection with Beethoven is made more apparent if one takes into consideration the fact that both middle movements share the same tonality and function as a kind of bridge between the first movement and the last. Additionally, Ravel’s remark to pianist Marguerite Long (1874–1966) to play the minuet in the tempo of Beethoven’s Minuet from the Sonata in E flat major, op. 31/3 make the reference stronger. At the same time, Ravel is recorded to have remarked that the minuet should be performed “sensitively, but not over-refined”.

The Animé is a tour de force of brilliant virtuosic piano writing. The movement follows the formal outline of a sonata-allegro structure in which all the previous material are heard in new transformations.

Nocturne in G minor, op. 37/1 (1837–39) Waltz in A flat major, op. 42 (1840) Polonaise in A flat major, op. 53 (1842) Fryderyk Chopin (1810–1849) Il faut chanter avec les doigts! Although, we do not know precisely what prompted Chopin to make this remark, it is certainly most appropriate when it comes to his Nocturnes. In fact, his student, Karol Mikuli (1821–1897), informs us that Chopin gave his students Nocturnes, in order to help them learn how to produce a beautiful tone at the keyboard. At the beginning of the 19th century, the Nocturne was, in fact, associated with vocal ensemble works, popular in salons and domestic music-making. This association was catalytic in how composers understood the piano version. In the early 1810s, the Irish John Filed (1782–1837) started writing piano pieces with this title as an instrumental version of the vocal genre, a kind of ‘songs without words’. Chopin not only embraced the nocturne, but also introduced a new range of expressiveness into it while maintaining ‘a perceptible presence of the vocal genre within its pianistic namesake’ (J. Kallberg).

The Nocturne in tonight’s programme is the first of two nocturnes published as a pair. They date from the time of Chopin’s trip to Majorca; the first was written prior to that memorable romantic escapade, while the second, just after. The Nocturne in G minor offers us “nocturnal reflection

that could seemingly last without end. But then a different, unexpected, atmosphere appears. We are transported to another realm. A sequence of chords appears, bound in self-communion” (Tomaszewski). Rightfully, the middle section with its distinctive chorale-like character, has been often likened with ‘a prayer played on a country organ’ (Hoesick Kleczyński). The initial melody returns and at the end, the music ends in the major mode shedding a light of hope to its otherwise somber and lamenting character.

Chopin wrote waltzes throughout his life (he wrote a total of nineteen), but published only eight.

With the exception, perhaps, of the Grande Valse Brillante, op. 18, all other waltzes were not intended to be danced. Rather, they may be construed as ‘dance-poems’, as Blair Johnston calls them, “for the soul and not the body, reflecting the composer’s attitudes from […] very different points of view’. The Waltz in A flat major, the fifth that the composer composed has five intertwining dances that are dramatically structured into a coherent and intriguing whole.

Introduced by a trill lasting a full eight bars, this valse suprême unfolds in a kind of free rondo form with four diverse waltzes and an interconnected refrain. The first is perhaps the most interesting in terms of rhythm, as it toys with the characteristic triple waltz time. It introduces a melody that seems to unfold in duple time set over the relentlessly triple accompaniment of the left hand. Such practices were common with Chopin in his waltzes, but never so explicit. Jeffrey Kallberg argues: “To perceive the wit in such passages of course requires that we grasp the droll way in which Chopin deploys the simple-minded accompaniment. Chopin’s waltzes render socially engaged humour into a musical concept.” The connecting refrain is a fleeting demonstration of non-melodic figuration that twirls delightfully. The second waltz is short and perhaps may be construed to have references to the Austrian Ländler, while the third seems to be more boisterous in character. The fourth dance stands in the middle of the work, and brings a clear change in mood and tempo. Marked sostenuto (held back) and set in C minor, it blooms into one of those wonderful and intimate melodies that only Chopin was capable of. The refrain brings back the broad first dance, but the ensuing refrain leads into a modified presentation of the third dance and leads the piece to its grandiose climax and its exhilarating close.

The Polonaise in A flat major was composed at Nohant in 1842, alongside with the Fourth Ballade and the Fourth Scherzo. Although it clearly emanates the pulse and vigour, and especially the majesty, of a polonaise, the work is more like a dance poem, rather than an actual dance. It invokes images of patriotism, nationalist and often seems to inspire Revolution. In fact, so much so, that it soon received the appellation ‘Héroique’. The Polonaise opens with an introduction that is bold and full of verve that leads to the ever so popular, persevering and swaggering main theme, which gradually builds up in volume and tension. The ensuing sostenuto fails to ease the tension, “barely restraining the narrative’s propulsion” (Tomaszewski). Seven striking fortissimo chords, in the unexpected key of E major, introduce the middle section. A series of military fanfares over an insistent descending motif in octaves in the left hand follows, beginning softly and gradually increasing in volume and tension culminating in D sharp major (enharmonic of E flat major, the dominant of A flat major). After it is repeated, the section gives into a lyrical section, which gradually leads back to the return of the proud Polonaise theme and the heroic plenitude of the piece.

It is interesting to note that according to an account by his student, Adolphe Gutman (1819– 1882), Chopin played the octave section without increasing the volume much, and according to Franz Liszt, who witnessed Chopin play the Polonaise, the composer often played the episode in F minor (the section that leads back to the main theme of the work) “like the muffled rumbling of a distant cannon’. Interestingly, Chopin seems to have confessed to Sir Charles Hallé (1819–1895), one of his closest associates, that he was quite unhappy with how fast his Polonaise was often performed, “thereby destroying all the grandeur and majesty of this noble inspiration”.

Friedrich No. 9 …Der Kuss, (1907–1908), Gustav Klimt No. 12 …The Dance, (1988), Paula Rego In 2008, as part of a series of events to mark the French Presidency of the EU, I was asked to compose a piece of music to be performed by the pianist Cyprien Katsaris at the Great Hall of the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. The idea finally consolidated in my mind that there will be two contrasting pieces, which then took the form of two preludes. This, also, had the added dimension of linking them to that quintessentially French collection of preludes: Debussy’s two Books of Préludes. The intention was not one of style; rather, to make use of the principle where the title of each piece is not written at the top of the page, but simply added in the very end (within brackets).

This indicates what the source of inspiration might be, but avoids any programmatic implications.

In effect, it shows that the particular piece of music should stand on its own. As a result of those two initial ones, I decided to continue until a cycle of twelve was completed, and the last prelude was composed in 2014. A few revisions have been made, as recent as 2018.

During this whole decade, a question has been on my mind: what does composing for the piano look like in the 21st century? This is especially pertinent to me, given my training and many years as a pianist. The tradition and sheer volume of works for this particular instrument have been so great and varied that it can be intimidating (and I still find it the hardest instrument to compose for). But as long as the composer feels he or she has something to say, express, and share with others, then that opens up a new avenue that will finally take shape in the hands of a forwardlooking performer.

NICOLAS COSTANTINOU Nicolas Costantinou is renowned for impressing his audience with his daring selection of repertoire, old and new, and his ability to perform with extraordinary instrumental ensembles. He has been hailed by critics as ‘…an artist of deep emotions, who is capable of performing music with his whole being and soul…’ (Kaleva) whilst his interpretations have been described as ‘colossal’ and ‘dramatic’ (D. Nicolau).

Dr Costantinou enjoys collaborating with a diverse range of instrumentalists and singers alike. His chamber music collaborations often include internationally acclaimed musicians and singers such as the violinists Vilmos Szabadi, Chloë Hanslip, Nikos Pittas, Wolfgang Schroeder, Kazuhiro Tagaki, the cellists Gustav Rivinius, Erkki Rautio, David Cohen, Péter Somodari, Tytus Miecznikowski, flautists János Bálint, Virginie Bove, oboist Francesco Quaranta, clarinetist Gábor Varga, and the Meta4 and Akadémia String Quartet. His passion for Art-Song has lead to collaborations with singers, such as, sopranos Margarita Elia, Katerina Mina, Zoe Nicolaidou, mezzo-soprano Elli Aloneftou, tenor Christian Zenker and baritone Kyros Patsalides.

He regularly performs works by Cypriot composers in Cyprus and abroad including a number of world premieres. Dr Costantinou has recently performed for the first time in Cyprus Beethoven’s complete works for piano and violin (2013–14) with violinist Nikos Pittas and for piano and cello (2015–16) with cellist Peter Somodari.

In 2018, Nicolas has given an all-Chopin recital in Larnaca, Lefkosia, Beirut and London, and has appeared in a chamber music recital entitled «Music with the Leaders» where, along with the concert master of the Thessaloniki Symphony Orchestra, Simos Papanas, the first viola of the Berliner Philharmoniker, Maté Szűcs, and the first cello of the Wiener Philharmoniker, Péter Somodari, he has interpreted works by Mozart, Schumann and Brahms.

Nicolas Costantinou graduated from the Greek Hellenic Academy of Music, the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music in Szeged, the Ferenc Liszt University of Music in Budapest summa cum laude and holds a Master of Music in Performance from the U.S. Cleveland Institute of Music. Recently, he has been awarded a doctorate of philosophy (PhD) from London’s Royal College of Music under the supervision of Prof. Paul Banks, Dr Julian Jacobson and Dr Jane Roper. His thesis is entitled The Chamber Music of Ernő Dohnányi; Tradition, Innovation and ‘Hungarianness’. He has also studied with Márta Gulyás, Dr Daniel Shapiro, Sándor Falvai, Ferenc Kerek, Tania Economou and Wanda Economou-Constantinou and he has participated in master classes held by acknowledged pianists such as Dmitri Bashkirov, Nicolas Economou, Vadim Suchanov and Ferenc Rádos.

Nicolas is currently teaching promising new talent in his home country. Many of his students have won numerous prizes at international piano competitions, and have participated in piano masterclasses with renowned professors. Some of his students have been accepted in to highly esteemed academies and universities, amongst others the Reina Sofía Escuela Superior de Música in Madrid, Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt in Weimar, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow, the Purcell School and the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. Dr Costantinou is currently a Lecturer at the University of Nicosia and also teaches at the Nicosia Music Schools.

Η μουσική του έχει εκτελεστεί από ορχήστρες διεθνούς κύρους όπως Philharmonia Orchestra, Bruckner Symphony Orchestra, Oxford Philomusica, Jeunesses Musicales World Orchestra, όπως επίσης τη Συμφωνική Ορχήστρα Κύπρου, και παρουσιαστεί σε σημαντικά θέατρα όπως το Wigmore Hall στο Λονδίνο, το King’s Theatre στο Εδιμβούργο, το St David's Hall στο Κάρντιφ, Teatro La Fenice στη Βενετία, το Beethoven-Haus στη Βόννη, τη Ραδιοφωνία της Βιέννης, τα κεντρικά γραφεία της Unesco και τον Καθεδρικό Saint-Louis des Invalides στο Παρίσι. Σπούδασε πιάνο και σύνθεση στο Royal College of Music (BMus, MMus in Piano Performance), στο King’s College London (MMus in Composition), και στο Royal Holloway University of London, όπου απέκτησε το Διδακτορικό στη Σύνθεση, το 2005. Του έχουν απονεμηθεί δύο βραβεία σύνθεσης από το Υπουργείο Παιδείας και Πολιτισμού της Κύπρου. Τον Φεβρουάριο 2009 δόθηκε η πρεμιέρα της όπεράς του Πικνίκ στο πεδίο της μάχης (στα γερμανικά), βασισμένη στο ομώνυμο θεατρικό του Φερνάντο Αρραμπάλ, σε παραγωγή του Landestheater της πόλης Λιντζ στην Αυστρία, μέσα στα πλαίσια των εκδηλώσεων για την Ευρωπαϊκή Πολιτιστική Πρωτεύουσα 2009, και η οποία έλαβε ενθουσιώδεις κριτικές. Περαιτέρω παραστάσεις δόθηκαν στην Κύπρο, και στην Ουγγαρία στα πλαίσια του Διεθνούς Φεστιβάλ Μπάρτοκ. Πρόσφατα έργα περιλαμβάνουν τον κύκλο Δώδεκα Πρελούδια για πιάνο (2008–12), εκ των οποίων διάφορα έχουν εκτελεσθεί μέχρι τώρα στο Λονδίνο, Πράγα, Κάρντιφ, Ζυρίχη και Μόσχα, το Κοντσέρτο για Βιόλα σε ντο ελάσσονα, η πρεμιέρα του οποίου δόθηκε τον Ιανουάριο 2013, τον κύκλο τραγουδιών Συμφωνία, η πρεμιέρα του οποίου δόθηκε τον Μάιο 2014 στο Μέγαρο Αθηνών, και τη Σονάτα για Βιολί και Πιάνο (2015) (πρεμιέρα στο Ελληνικό Πολιτιστικό Κέντρο στο Λονδίνο το 2016).

CONSTANTINOS STYLIANOU Constantinos Stylianou’s work covers the whole spectrum from solo instrumental to symphonic and operatic. Works have been performed by leading orchestras such as the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Bruckner Symphony Orchestra, the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra, the Jeunesses Musicales World Orchestra, as well as the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra, and in prestigious venues such as the Wigmore Hall in London, the King’s Theatre in Edinburgh, St David's Hall in Cardiff, the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Beethoven-Haus in Bonn, the ORF concert hall in Vienna, and the Unesco Headquarters and Cathédrale Saint-Louis des Invalides in Paris.

He studied piano and composition at the Royal College of Music, at King’s College London, and at Royal Holloway University of London where he was awarded the PhD in Composition in 2005.

He is also the recipient of two Composition Awards by the Cyprus Ministry of Education and Culture.

His opera Picknick im Felde (in German) was produced by and performed at the Linz Landestheater, as part of the official events for Linz European Cultural Capital 2009, and was received with enthusiastic reviews. The libretto (also by the composer) is based on the play by Fernando Arrabal. Following further performances in Cyprus, the opera was presented at the Bartók Festival in Hungary in the summer of 2009.

Recently completed works include a set of Twelve Préludes for piano (2008–12), various selections of which have been performed so far in London, Prague, Cardiff, Zurich and Moscow, the Concerto for Viola in C minor, which was premiered in January 2013, a song cycle based titled Symphonia, which was premiered in May 2014 at the Athens Megaron, and the Sonata for Violin and Piano (premiered at the Hellenic Centre in London in 2016).
