Σημειώσεις Προγράμματος Carl Frühling (1868–1937) Φαντασία, για φλάουτο και πιάνο, έργο 55 Ο Carl Frühling ήταν Αυστριακός συνθέτης και πιανίστας, ο οποίος σπούδασε στο Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde (Σύλλογος Φίλων Μουσικής), από το 1887– 89, μελετώντας πιάνο με τον Anton Door (1833–1919) και μουσική θεωρία με τον Franz Krenn (1816–1897). Οι πιο σημαντικές συνθέσεις μουσικής δωματίου του, ακολουθούν σταθερά την όψιμη ρομαντική μουσική παράδοση και αποφεύγουν τις νεωτεριστικές τάσεις. Ernő Dohnányi (1877–1960) Δύο Κομμάτια για Φλάουτο, έργο 48 (1958–59) Ο Ernő Dohnányi ολοκλήρωσε τις μουσικές του σπουδές στην Εθνική Ουγγρική Βασιλική Ακαδημία Μουσικής στη Βουδαπέστη (σήμερα γνωστή ως Μουσική Ακαδημία Franz Liszt), μελετώντας πιάνο με τον μαθητή του Liszt (1811–1886), István Thomán (1862–1940), και σύνθεση με τον στενό φίλο του Brahms, Hans Koessler (1853–1926). Σε αντίθεση με τον Dohnányi, οι περισσότεροι νεαροί μουσικοί προτιμούσαν να συνεχίζουν τη μουσική τους μόρφωση σε ανώτερα ιδρύματα στο εξωτερικό, όπως αυτά στη Βιέννη. Sergei Prokofiev (1891–1953) Σονάτα για φλάουτο και πιάνο σε Ρε μείζονα, έργο 94 (1943) Ο Prokofiev συνέθεσε τη μοναδική του Σονάτα για φλάουτο και πιάνο το 1943, όταν ζούσε στην πόλη Perm, στα βουνά των Ουραλίων. Η Perm, ήταν μια από τις πολλές απομακρυσμένες τοποθεσίες, όπου η σοβιετική κυβέρνηση έστελνε τους εξέχοντες καλλιτέχνες, ώστε να τους προφυλάξει από τα θύματα του Β’ Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου. Το έργο έλαβε την πρεμιέρα του στη Μόσχα, στη Ρωσία, στις 7 Δεκεμβρίου 1943, με τον Nicolai Ivanovich Kharkovsky στο φλάουτο και τον Sviatoslav Richter (1915–1997) στο πιάνο. Μετά από αίτημα του εξέχοντος σοβιετικού βιολονίστα, David Oistrakh (1908–1974), το επόμενο έτος, ο Prokofiev μετέγραψε το έργο για βιολί, εκδίδοντάς το ως τη δεύτερη Σονάτα για βιολί και πιάνο. Η έκδοση αυτή παρουσιάστηκε για πρώτη φορά στις 17 Ιουνίου 1944, από τον ίδιο τον Oistrakh και τον πιανίστα Lev Oborin (1907–1974). Frank Martin (1890–1974) Μπαλάντα (1939) για φλάουτο και πιάνο Ο Ελβετός συνθέτης Frank Martin δεν είχε σπουδάσει ποτέ σε μουσική σχολή. Αντ’ αυτού, είχε λάβει όλη τη μουσική του εκπαίδευση κατά την εφηβεία του από τον Joseph Lauber (1864–1952), ο οποίος τού δίδαξε πιάνο, αρμονία και σύνθεση. Ο Martin συνέθεσε συνολικά έξι μπαλάντες για διάφορα σόλο όργανα (σαξόφωνο, φλάουτο, πιάνο, τρομπόνι, τσέλο, βιόλα) και συνοδεία μεταξύ 1938 και 1972. Η μπαλάντα για το φλάουτο και το πιάνο χρονολογείται από τις αρχές του 1939 και ενορχηστρώθηκε το 1941. Το κομμάτι προοριζόταν ως το επιβεβλημένο έργο του Διεθνούς Διαγωνισμού Μουσικής Εκτέλεσης της Γενεύης, του οποίου νικητής ήταν ο André Jaunet (1911–1988). Ο Martin χρησιμοποιεί το σόλο όργανο ως αναπαράσταση της ανθρώπινης φωνής, αναλαμβάνοντας, έτσι, το ρόλο του αφηγητή. Ο Martin παραδέχτηκε ότι χρησιμοποίησε τον τίτλο Ballade, «με τη ρομαντική έννοια του όρου, όπως στις Ballades d'Ossian [ο Ossian ήταν ένας ημι-θρυλικός κελτικός ποιητής και πολεμιστής]. Σε αυτό υπάρχει ένας υπαινιγμός για κάτι επικό· είναι μια αφηγηματική ιστορία. Με αυτό το νόημα πρέπει κανείς να ακούσει». Το έργο είναι κάπως επεισοδιακό στη δομή, κινούμενο από το ένα τμήμα στο άλλο, χωρίς διακοπή.

Franz Doppler (1821–1883) Andante και Ρόντο, για δύο φλάουτα και πιάνο, έργο 25 (1874) Ο Franz Doppler αρχικά καταγόταν από την Πολωνία. Μετά από πολλές επιτυχίες στη Βιέννη και στην Αυστροουγγρική Αυτοκρατορία, αποφάσισε, το 1838, να εγκατασταθεί στη Βουδαπέστη, όπου δραστηριοποιήθηκε ως φλαουτίστας και ως συνθέτης. Μεταξύ άλλων, έχει συνθέσει τέσσερις ουγγρικές όπερες, οι οποίες υπήρξαν πολύ δημοφιλείς. Η μουσική του συνδυάζει επιρροές από την ιταλική, τη ρωσική, την πολωνική και την ουγγρική μουσική. Το 1858, ο Doppler μετακόμισε στη Βιέννη, όπου έπαιζε φλάουτο για το Hofoper, όπου υπηρέτησε αρχικά ως βοηθός και αργότερα ως επικεφαλής μαέστρος του μπαλέτου. Από το 1865 και μετά, δίδαξε φλάουτο στο Ωδείο της Βιέννης. Μεγάλο μέρος της μουσικής που συνέθεσε για φλάουτο προοριζόταν κυρίως για δική του χρήση, παρουσιάζοντας τόσο τις ερμηνευτικές, όσο και τις συνθετικές δεξιότητές του. Το παρόν Ντουέτο γράφτηκε για να επιδείξει όχι μόνο το ταλέντο του ιδίου, αλλά και αυτό του μικρότερου αδελφού του, Karl (1825– 1900), κατά τη διάρκεια μιας από τις πολλές περιοδείες τους. Η εκτενής μελωδία του εισαγωγικού Andante εξελίσσεται δραματικά με πλούσιες αρμονικές διφωνίες στα δύο φλάουτα. Το Rondo διαθέτει σύνθετα ρυθμικά στρώματα και διαθέτει όλα τα χαρακτηριστικά ενός ουγγρικού τσιγγάνικου χορού.

Franz Liszt (1811–1886), μετ. J. Bálint Ουγγρική Ραψωδία αρ. 2, S.244/2 Τον Δεκέμβριο του 1839, μετά από δεκαέξι χρόνια απουσίας, ο Franz Liszt επιστρέφει στην πατρίδα του, Ουγγαρία, μετά από πρόσκληση του κράτους, το οποίο επιθυμούσε να τον τιμήσει και να τον αναγνωρίσει επίσημα, ως καλλιτέχνη και φιλάνθρωπο. Τον προηγούμενο χειμώνα, είχε προσφέρει σημαντική οικονομική στήριξη στην Ουγγαρία, προκειμένου να μετριαστούν οι ζημιές που προκλήθηκαν από τη μαζική υπερχείλιση του Δούναβη. Στις 4 Ιανουαρίου 1840, μετά από ένα θρυλικό ρεσιτάλ, ο Liszt έλαβε το περίφημο «Ξίφος Τιμής». Αξιοποιώντας τη διαμονή του στην Ουγγαρία, ο Liszt αποφάσισε να επισκεφθεί έναν οικισμό τσιγγάνων, ώστε να γνωρίσει καλύτερα τη μουσική και τις μουσικές παραδόσεις τους. Την εποχή εκείνη, οι τσιγγάνικες μπάντες ήταν τα πιο διαδεδομένα μουσικά σχήματα στη χώρα, τα οποία εκτελούσαν τη λαϊκή μουσική της Ουγγαρίας, την οποία πολλές φορές εμπλούτιζαν με τις δικές τους μουσικές παραδόσεις. Το αποτέλεσμα αυτής της εμπειρίας ήταν το έργο Magyar Dallok («Ουγγρικές Εθνικές Μελωδίες»), μια σειρά από κομμάτια πιάνου, βασισμένα στο υλικό που ο Liszt κατέγραψε όσο ακόμη βρισκόταν στον οικισμό. με τον Alan Walker, «οι ραψωδίες [...] διαφυλάσσουν τα δύο βασικά στοιχεία που αποτελούν τη «δομή» ενός τυπικού τσιγγάνικου αυτοσχεδιασμού: το lassan («αργό μέρος») και το friska («γρήγορο μέρος»). Ταυτόχρονα, οι ραψωδίες ενσωματώνουν μια σειρά από ειδικά εφέ, μοναδικά για την «ηχητική παλέτα» της τσιγγάνικης μπάντας». Programme Notes Carl Frühling (1868–1937) Fantasie, for flute and piano, op. 55 Carl Frühling was an Austrian composer and pianist, who studied at the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde from 1887–1889 where he was taught the piano

by Anton Door (1833–1919) and music theory by Franz Krenn (1816–1897). His more substantial chamber music compositions, are firmly within the Romantic tradition and eschew modernist tendencies. Unfortunately, the date of composition of the Fantasie is unknown. A pre-dominantly lyrical composition, the work features three distinct sections that follow each other uninterrupted, and with each new main section the tempo becomes faster. By restating the opening section at the end, Frühling gives the work a cyclical sense.

Ernő Dohnányi (1877–1960) “Aria” from Two Pieces for Flute, op. 48 (1958–59) Ernő Dohnányi received his education at the National Hungarian Royal Academy of Music in Budapest (today: Franz Liszt Academy of Music) studying piano with Liszt’s (1811–1886) student István Thomán (1862–1940) and composition with Brahms’ close friend Hans Koessler (1853–1926). Unlike Dohnányi, most aspiring young artists usually preferred to pursue their education in esteemed institutions abroad such as that in Vienna. Dohnányi’s daring decision to continue his education in his own country was soon to be followed by Béla Bartók (1881–1945) and Zoltán Kodály (1882–1967). By 1900s Dohnányi was an international phenomenon both as a pianist and as a composer, being compared with pianists such as Ignacy Paderewski (1860–1941), and Eugen d’Albert (1864–1932), and hailed as the “god-inspired genius” who would create the Hungarian symphonic music.

The political situation in Hungary during the Second World War forced Dohnányi and his family to settle in Tallahassee, Florida where, in 1949, Dohnányi accepted a position at the Florida State University, as Professor of Piano and Composer-inResidence. Additionally, Dohnányi was visiting the Ohio State University in Athens (OH) on an annual basis as artist-in-residence. While there, Dohnányi became actively involved in the musical education of the President of the University, John Calhoun Baker’s (1895–1999) fifteen-year-old Ellie (b. 1936; later Eleanor Lawrence), who was learning the flute. As a result, Dohnányi wrote for her two pieces (the present “Aria” and a “Passacaglia” for solo flute), while a third composition, an untitled trio for three flutes, remained unfinished due to Dohnányi’s sudden death on 9 February 1960. The Aria for flute and piano dates

from the spring of 1958, while the Passacaglia for solo flute from the summer of 1959. Robert Waln and Eduard Kilényi (1910–2000) gave the first performance of the Aria in Tallahassee in 1962.

Eleanor describes the Aria as ‘a billowing, passionate little piece brimming with romance and longing – a perfect cameo of the qualities which spoke to me so eloquently in Brahms, and, in a way, a character sketch of the romantic teenager I was at the time’.

Sergei Prokofiev (1891–1953) Sonata for flute and piano in D major, op. 94 (1943) Prokofiev composed his only Sonata for flute and piano in 1943, while in the city of Perm in the Ural Mountains. Perm, was one of many remote locations where the Soviet government sent its prominent artists in order to keep them safe from the casualties of WWII. The work received its premiere in Moscow, Russia on December 7, 1943 with Nicolai Ivanovich Kharkovsky on the flute and Sviatoslav Richter (1915–1997) on the piano. Upon the request of the prominent Soviet violinist, David Oistrakh (1908–1974), Prokofiev transcribed the work for violin the following year, and the work became the Second Sonata for violin and piano.

Under this guise, the work received its first performance by Oistrakh himself and Lev Oborin (1907–1974) on June 17, 1944.

Prokofiev admitted that the Sonata’s overall character, although ‘inappropriate’ for the surrounding circumstances of WWII, was ‘pleasant’. Perhaps, not without reason; Prokofiev’s biographer Israel Nestyev informs us that much of its thematic material had been sketched before the war, and seems to have been inspired by the French flautist Georges Barrère (1876–1944), whom Prokofiev heard in New York City in 1920s.

The Sonata has ‘a classical, clear [and] transparent sonority’, Prokofiev explains, featuring a graceful melodic treatment, somewhat similar to his earlier Classical Symphony. The transparent and serene Moderato shares many of the neoclassical qualities found in his earlier composed Piano Sonata No. 5 (1923). The following Scherzo is, according to Maurice Hinson and Wesley Roberts, ‘elegance personified’. Initially light and capricious, the movement soon adopts an ‘increasingly sardonic tone’, as Daniel Jaffé observes. The Andante unfolds with an ‘emotional coolness and measured rhythm’ (Hinson and Roberts), and it ‘contains a striking passage of bluesy rumination: an admirer of jazz, Prokofiev at one stage held semi-clandestine meetings with fellow aficionados in his Moscow apartment in which he played recordings he had brought back from his foreign tours’ (Jaffé). The Finale is robust and festive in the Russian style, as Prokofiev's finales frequently are.

Frank Martin (1890–1974) Ballade (1939), for flute and piano Swiss composer Frank Martin had never studies at a music conservatory. Instead he had received all his musical education during his adolescence from Joseph Lauber (1864–1952), who taught him piano, harmony and composition.

Martin composed a total of six Ballades for different solo instruments (saxophone, flute, piano, trombone, cello, viola) and accompaniment between 1938 and 1972. The Ballade for flute and piano dates from early 1939 and it was orchestrated in 1941. The piece was intended as the obligatory piece for the Concours international d’exécution musicale de Genève, of which the winner was André Jaunet (1911–1988). Martin uses the solo instrument as a representation of the human voice, and assumes the role of a narrator’s voice. Martin admitted that he used the title Ballade, “in the romantic sense of the term, as in the Ballades d’Ossian [a semi-legendary Gaelic poet and warrior]. In this there is an evocation of something epic; it is a story that is told. It is with this meaning in mind that one should listen.” The work is somewhat episodic in construction, moving from one section to another without break.

Franz Doppler (1821–1883) Andante and Rondo, for two flutes, op. 25 (1874) Franz Doppler was originally from Poland. After many successes in Vienna and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, in 1838 he decided to settle in Budapest where he was active as a flautist and as a composer. Among his works are four Hungarian operas, which were very well received. His music combines influences from Italian, Russian, Polish and Hungarian music alike. Doppler moved to Vienna in 1858 where he played the flute for the Hofoper and served first as an assistant and later as chief conductor of the ballet. From 1865 onwards he taught the flute at the Vienna Conservatory.

Much of the music he composed for the flute was meant primarily for his own use, showcasing both his virtuoso abilities and his compositional skills. The present duo was composed to showcase the talents of both himself and his younger brother Karl (1825–1900) during one of their many tours. The long melody of the Andante sweeps and soars in a dramatic fashion with rich harmonies in the two flutes. The Rondo features complex rhythmic layers, and has the cheek and drive of a Hungarian gypsy dance.

Franz Liszt (1811–1886), arr. J. Bálint Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2, S.244/2 In December, 1839, after a period of absence for sixteen years, Franz Liszt returned to his homeland, Hungary, after an invitation from the state to officially acknowledge him as an international artist as well as thank him for the generous financial support he provided in order to alleviate the damages caused by the massive overflow of the Danube the previous winter. On January 4, 1840, after a legendary recital, Liszt received the famous “Sword of Honour”. Taking advantage of his days in Hungary, Liszt decided to visit a Gypsy encampment and to better acquaint himself with their music. At the time, Gypsy bands were the main performing groups in the country, playing the vernacular music of Hungary, while, at the same time, not hesitating to inflict it with their own traditions. The result of this experience was a series of piano pieces called Magyar Dallok (“Hungarian National Melodies”) which were based on material Liszt jotted down at the encampment. Eleven years later, He revised and published them as the first fifteen Hungarian Rhapsodies (1851–53). According to Alan Walker: ‘The rhapsodies […] preserve the two main elements which make up the “structure” of a typical Gypsy improvisation: the lassan (“slow”) and the friska (“fast”). At the same time, they incorporate a number of special effects unique to the “sonic surface” of the Gypsy band.’ Such practices were also common feature of the so called Verbunkos music. The word comes from the German word Werbung, meaning “recruiting dance”. The verbunkos was originally intended to ‘lure village boys into the army with depictions of a jolly and carefree army life’ (Johnathan Bellman). Such pieces would normally begin with a slow section, known as hallgató (“to be listened to”), and followed by a faster section known as cifra (“flashy”). Verbunkos pieces would usually begin ‘slowly with measured and dignified steps from the commanding officer and become wilder and more joyous as men from further down the military hierarchy began to join in’. The music was usually in duple meter and would gradually move from its initial slow pace to the faster finale. The verbunkos was enriched with a great deal of improvisation and ornamentation as well as flashy displays of virtuosity. Dramatically, the shift from slow to fast also implied a gradual change of mood, moving from the heavy and dark to the light and joyful.

All these elements are retained in all of Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsodies as well.

The Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 (completed in 1847) is perhaps the most popular of the set. It was published in 1851 with a dedication to Count László Teleki (1811–1861), a Hungarian writer and statesman. The Rhapsody was so successful, that Liszt decided to orchestrate it in 1857.

He graduated from Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest in 1984. He complemented his education with masterclasses from András Adorján. Mr. Bálint has won numerous awards at international competitions concurrently, such as those held in Ancona and Leipzig.

Between 1981–91, he has served as the first flute of the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, while, in 1998, he was appointed Artistic director of the Auer Summer Academy and, in 1999, he founded the Doppler Music Institute in Hungary of which he was the president.

Since 2000, he is the first flautist of the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1986, he became a featured soloist of the Cziffra Foundation, which helped launch his international career. Since then, Mr. Bálint has performed at some of the most important festivals in Europe, and appeared in some of the most prestigious venues in cities like London, Paris, Bratislava, Rome, Assisi, Moscow, Helsinki, Salzburg and Budapest.

Furthermore, he has frequently toured in Israel and the United States. His partners include Ruggiero Ricci, Gervase de Peyer, Pierre Pierlot, Miklós Perényi, Alain Marion, Maxence Larrieu, Georges Cziffra, Tamás Vásáry, Zoltán Kocsis András Adorján, Ransom Wilson and Jean-Claude Gérard, while he has collaborated with various ensembles and orchestras such as the English Chamber Orchestra, the Radio Orchestra of Bratislava, the European Soloists from Luxembourg, the Kodály and Bartok String Quartets and the most important Hungarian symphony and chamber orchestras.

Mr. Bálint regularly makes radio and TV recordings and which include the transmission of live performances. János has released a total of thirty cd recordings with labels such as Naxos, Hungaroton and Capriccio. His recordings of transcriptions of works by Paganini and Mendelssohn with the Budapest Symphony Orchestra and conductor Piergiorgio Morandi and by Franck, Schubert and Dvořák with pianist Zoltán Kocsis, both with Hungaroton, have enjoyed tremendous success.

Mr. Bálint regularly serves as a jury member at several international flute and chamber music competitions in countries such as Hungary, Serbia, USA, Italy, Poland, Austria, Rumania and Japan.

Mr. Bálint currently teaches at the Accademia Flautistica in Imola and the Hochschule für Musik in Detmold, and he gives regular master classes around the world. His students have received more than twenty prizes in International Competitions.

He has performed all the literature that includes the flute as a solo instrument, which encompasses over a thousand pieces, ranging from baroque to contemporary, and has made several transcriptions and arrangements of works written for other instruments.

Several composers have written and dedicated works to him, and his interpretations of these compositions received numerous awards.

He has been hailed by critics as ‘…an artist of deep emotions, who is capable of performing music with his whole being and soul…’ (Kaleva) whilst his interpretations have been described as ‘colossal’ and ‘dramatic’ (D. Nicolau).

He has given numerous concerts in Europe and the USA and has appeared in prestigious halls such as Wigmore Hall, the Brahms Saal of the Musikverein in Vienna, the Beethoven-Haus in Bonn, and the Grand Hall of the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. He has been invited to perform at international festivals around Europe such as the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival, the Oulunsalo Soi Music Festival (Finland), the Gödöllő Chamber Music Festival (Hungary), the Ledra Music Soloists International Chamber Music Festival and the Kypria Festival (Cyprus). He has performed with the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Russian Chamber Philharmonic St. Petersburg, the Budapest Concert Orchestra, the Failoni Chamber Orchestra, and the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra, with maestros such as Konrad von Abel, Juri Gilbo, Esa Heikkilä, Maciej Zoltowski and Notis Georgiou. In the field of chamber music, he has performed several outstanding musicians, such as Gustav Rivinius, Erkki Rautio, David Cohen, Péter Somodari, Vilmos Szabadi, Tytus Miecznikowski, Gábor Varga, Chloë Hanslip, and the Meta4 and Akadémia String Quartet. Future engagements include solo recitals with works by Fr. Chopin in Beirut, London, Lefkosia and Athens.

Nicolas Costantinou graduated from the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music in Szeged, the Ferenc Liszt University of Music in Budapest summa cum laude and holds a Master of Music in Performance from the U.S. Cleveland Institute of Music. Recently, he has been awarded a doctorate of philosophy (PhD) from London’s Royal College of Music under the supervision of Prof. Paul Banks, Dr. Julian Jacobson and Dr. Jane Roper. His thesis is entitled The Chamber Music of Ernő Dohnányi; Tradition, Innovation and ‘Hungarianness’. He has also studied with Márta Gulyás, Dr. Daniel Shapiro, Sándor Falvai, Ferenc Kerek, Tania Economou and Wanda Economou-Constantinou and he has participated in master classes held by acknowledged pianists such as Dmitri Bashkirov, Nicolas Economou, Vadim Suchanov and Ferenc Rádos.

Nicolas is currently teaching promising new talent in his home country. Many of his students have won numerous prizes at international piano competitions, and have participated in esteemed piano master-classes with renowned professors. Some of his students have been accepted in highly esteemed Academies and Universities, amongst others the Reina Sofía Escuela Superior de Música in Madrid and the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, USA. Dr Costantinou is currently a Lecturer at the University of Nicosia and also teaches at the Nicosia Music Schools.

Diomedes Demetriades was born in Nicosia in 1987. He received his first flute lessons from Svetlana Ristić at the age of eight. In 2005, he enrolled at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama as a part-time student in the class of Sarah Newbold. In 2008, he completed his studies at the Royal Academy of Music, London in the class of Kate Hill and Michael Cox (Bachelor of Music, Honours) and, in 2012, at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln with Robert Winn (Master of Music in Solo Performance). He has also participated in master classes with William Bennett, Michael Hazel, Lisa Beznosiuk, Gareth Davies, Paul Edmund-Davies, Lorna McGhee, Marc Grauwels amongst others.

Mr. Demetriades has also been receiving piccolo lessons from Patricia Morris and Thaddeus Watson. As a piccolo soloist, he won the Jonathan Myall Piccolo Prize at the Royal Academy of Music in 2010 and had his first successful audition as Principal Piccolo player for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra (Trial, 2011).

He has been on trial with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra for the principal piccolo position (2015–16) followed by a one-year contract for the tutti flute/piccolo position (2016–17). He has also collaborated with the Gothenburg Opera Orchestra as an extra player. Diomedes has been playing for the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra as an extra player since 2012.

He has collaborated with conductors such as Sir Colin Davis, Gustavo Dudamel, Herbert Blomstedt, Kent Nagano, Jukka Pekka Saraste, Santtu-Matias Rouvali, Vasily Petrenko, Yan-Pascal Tortelier, Francois Xavier Roth, Peter Eötvös, Roberto Minczuk, Thierry Fischer, Tadaaki Otaka and Susanna Maikki amongst others.

An active orchestral and chamber music player, Diomedes has collaborated with the Cyprus Youth Orchestra (since 2000), the New Music Ensemble (Germany, 2011), the Orion Symphony Orchestra (2007–10), the Orpheus Sinfonia Orchestra (2008) as well as the Concert and Symphony Orchestras of the Royal Academy of Music (2006–10). He has also been a member of the Al Bustan Festival Orchestra (Lebanon 2016), 24/04 Orchestra (Armenia, 2015), the Orchestra Academy at the Esterházy Palace (Austria, 2011) and has participated in flute seminars such as the International Flute Summer School (UK, 2009), the Rencontres Musicales Internationales en Wallonie (Belgium, 2008) and Just Flutes, in Woldingham (UK, 2003 and 2004).

Following two successful auditions in 2017, Mr. Demetriades is currently on trial with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (UK) as well as the Ulster Orchestra (Ireland) for the principal piccolo position.

Ledra Music Soloists (LMS) is a non-profit legal body, which was formed in an effort to promote classical music in Cyprus and abroad by inviting various established artists to collaborate, exchange experiences and finally present their work in concerts.
