I met a man who found old keys. Someone else pointed out what happens under the bridge when nobody’s watching, where words emerge from the walls, how much you need to smoke in order to speak with the dead.

I shook the hand hovering over the air raid, I hear what you hear when you can’t see – who goes feeling through the dark at the bottom of the moat or reaches for the stars in the giant dark above our heads. I got the address of the Peacock butterfly. I met the guardian of the light in the Donkersteeg, I would like to show you the way to the lime trees and to infinity.

Er was een man die sleutels vond. Een ander wees wat er gebeurt onder de brug als niemand kijkt, waar de muren woorden maken, hoeveel men dient te roken om te spreken met de doden.

Ik drukte de hand boven het luchtalarm, ik hoorde wat je hoort als je niets ziet – wie in het duister tast over de bodem van de gracht of grabbelt naar de sterren in het reusachtige donker boven onze hoofden. Ik kreeg het adres van de dagpauwoog, ontmoette de hoeder van het licht in de Donkersteeg, ik wijs je graag de weg naar de linden en de oneindigheid.

Rob Overmeer’s secret city The scandalous kiss that should have stayed a secret. The photo finish that captured a miniscule difference. Kairos is significant in photo journalism: the ultimate newsworthy moment is captured in a photo that could not have been made half a second earlier or later. It is that chase that compels us to buy a newspaper. But kairos photography doesn’t interest Rob Overmeer. Leiden’s first city photographer sees things very differently.

LIGHTING His approach requires a lot of preparation: deciding on the right subject for a photo, calling weeks in advance, filling a car with lighting material, getting in touch, choosing a location, unloading, discussing, exploration followed by another discussion, choosing a scene, shifting things around. After an hour or more, the photographer and his subject have become so used to each other that any initial tensions have disappeared. He takes his time, as well as an abun­dance of photographs. He employs lighting carefully: no fancy firework effects, but in such a way that many details from the surroundings are visible, and if need be he reshuffles elements to enhance the colour effects. The main characters are often photographed with backlighting, but their faces are clearly lit. Back home, he selects and edits. He chooses sharp crops, accentuates colours and carefully determines contrasts.

And what is then presented to us every Friday in the newspaper – full spread and preferably right in the middle of the paper without that troublesome fold – are pictures of people in their element. The tugboat captain, the squatters, the beadle, the fire service operator, the geocacher (a geocacher?), the cemetry caretakers. They may be posing, but they’re very much at ease. The intruder with his camera seems welcome in their natural habitats.

These photos don’t conjure up an impression of some one-time events, but instead suggest continuity. The majority of the subjects aren’t looking straight into the lens, but to one side. They’re busy doing what they do best, using their particular skills and proud of their work. And even if you’re not happy to see them in action or inclined to photograph them, the football player, beadle, carillonist and cobbler are simply at work in the city. Naturally.

BEP FROM LEIDEN The attributes with which people are pictured, are not generally surprising.

The organ grinder is, of course, surrounded by his street organs with their lime wood figures and organ books while the cobbler can be found amidst his shoes and tools. However, the large role these attributes play is striking: they’re often as important as whoever is being portrayed. The number of lasts, yarns and cobbler’s tools is astounding. The electricity generator and the giant Ferris Wheel attract more attention than the man operating them at the fair. The ostriches, cassowaries and rheas have the last laugh over the collection manager for birds and mammals at Naturalis (funny detail in this photograph: the manager is holding a bird’s nametag in his hand, while a similar nametag is dangling out of his own trousers – the man is labelled like an animal).

What makes the work of the city photographer so satisfying, rather than self-evident, is the hidden city that the pictures partially uncover. On top of the roof of the Pieterskerk, below the surface of the water at the Beestenmarkt, standing in a freshly dug grave, and in between a herd of sheep in the middle of the city. He gives us a glimpse of the inside of the mosque on the Willem de Zwijgerlaan, and of Leiden from above by employing the perspective of the tower crane operator. He lets your eyes get used to the darkness that surrounds the blind woman as she’s walking through the city with her dog, in which a graffiti artist is illegally working, and to the spirit world of the medium Bep from Leiden.

LANGUAGE But what is all that text doing beneath the photographs? Isn’t Rob Overmeer ruining the effects of his own images by adding the faculty of language: and not just a brief description of the photo, but pieces of some 300 words in length?

These texts add a surprising amount to the whole package. Just like photo detective Hans Aarsman, who critically looks at and questions photographs, Overmeer shapes his curiosity and that of his readers by asking numerous questions. That curiosity is rewarded and the viewer’s perspective becomes more focused. ‘Don’t either of you have a husband then?’ Overmeer asks the ladies of the Sint Anna Aalmoeshuishofje. ‘I’m doing without one for a while,’ Wil responds. ‘And I’ve stopped with that altogether,’ Carolien says. Further questioning reveals that one of the anonymous men who check the electrical equipment at the recycling store is actually a Tibetan monk. Corine, accompanied by her dog Co, is asked how she experiences the city. ‘To me Leiden consists of fragments. For instance, I can hear the hollow tone of Museum De Lakenhal when I walk past the door, and I can smell the aromatic scent of V&D.’ In his writing, Overmeer definitely keeps his ears and nose open. He lets us smell the formalin of the ostriches in the depot at Naturalis. ‘I like the smell of the seagulls, they’re nice and sweet.’ He points out to us the urine and pigeon droppings below the Grote Havenbrug.

He listens attentively to the jargon that surrounds his subjects. ‘I’m working on a doctoral study on the characteristics of materials such as lanthanum aluminate-strontium titanate.’ He discusses the controls of the bridge with the bridge keeper: ‘The bridge keeper doesn’t come down here. He just opens the bridge upstairs at the Chinaman.’ ‘The Chinaman?’ ‘Yeah, that’s what we call the device in the bridge keeper’s office that opens and closes the bridge.’ And the board members of the student societies also have their own lingo: grappling, informal fines and fixing: ‘There’s no fixing in the board.’ ‘Fixing?’ ‘Fixing is our slang for screwing.’

GUARDIANS OF THE CITY Through his photos and columns, Overmeer lets us gaze at the many different worlds that can be found in the city centre. He steps out of the scenery – once in his final photograph on the Burcht and throughout his writings – and politely and curiously explores whatever he comes across. Thus it turns out that Leiden has an illumination specialist, someone who searches for corpses in murky water, a geocacher and a laughers’ club. And an employee at the Hortus Botanicus who’s actually an opera singer.

The lives and activities of the people portrayed all complement each other wonderfully. Together they form the invisible structures that define this city. The bridge keeper knows the tugboat captain, the blind woman orientates herself to the sounds of the carillonist, the technical maintenance team repairs the bridge keeper’s bridge, below which the homeless man sleeps. The graffiti artist understandably hates the cameras that are being controlled by the man in the police control room. The minimalist student’s shoes are repaired by the cobbler also featured in the series.

It’s not the city’s goal-scoring strikers, but the midfielders who make the most miles. It’s the people that won’t penetrate the scope of PR photography. Yet Rob Overmeer has found, interviewed and shone light on them in his travels through his secret city. Together they form a city with its own incentives and activities. They are the guardians of the city.

De geheime stad van Rob Overmeer De schandalige kus die verborgen had moeten blijven. De finishfoto met banddikte verschil. In de fotojournalistiek speelt kairos een grote rol: het ultieme nieuwsmoment vastgelegd met een foto die geen halve seconde eerder of later genomen had kunnen worden. Voor die jacht op het nieuwsfeit kopen we onze kranten. Maar die kairos-fotografie treffen we niet aan in de serie van Rob Overmeer in het Leidsch Dagblad. De eerste Leidse stadsfotograaf ziet het anders.

LICHT Zijn aanpak vergt veel voorbereiding: afwegen wie een geschikt onderwerp is voor een foto, weken van tevoren bellen, lichtspullen in de auto laden, contact maken, plek zoeken, uitladen, praten, rondkijken en weer praten, een scène kiezen, hier en daar iets verzetten. Na een uur of langer zijn de fotograaf en zijn onderwerp zo gewend aan elkaar dat de aanvankelijke spanning is weggeëbd.

Hij neemt zijn tijd en een heleboel foto’s. Hij belicht zorgvuldig: zonder vette vuurwerkeffecten, maar wel zo dat er veel omgevingsdetails te zien zijn, en als het moet met herschikking van elementen zodat kleureffectjes beter uitkomen.

De hoofdpersonen zijn vaak met tegenlicht gefotografeerd, maar hij licht hun gezicht secuur uit. Thuis selecteert en bewerkt hij. Kiest scherpe uitsneden, accentueert kleuren en bepaalt nauwkeurig het contrast.

Wat we vervolgens wekelijks op vrijdag in de krant voorgeschoteld krijgen – spreadbreed en het liefst precies in het midden van de krant zonder hinderlijke vouw – zijn foto’s van mensen in hun element. De sleepbootkaptein, de krakers, de centralist bij de brandweer, de geocacher (de geocacher?), de grafdelvers. Wel geposeerd, maar niet gespannen. De indringer en zijn camera lijken welkom in hun habitat.

De foto’s wekken niet de indruk van eenmalige feiten, ze suggereren continuïteit. Verreweg de meeste personen kijken niet in de lens, maar weg. Ze zijn bezig met hun bijzondere bezigheden, waarin hun expertise, en beroepstrots ligt. Ook als je er niet bij bent om ze in actie te zien of om er een foto van te maken zijn deze voetbalster, pedel en carillonspeler gewoon bezig in die stad.

Vanzelfsprekend.

LEIDSE BEP De attributen waarmee de geportretteerden afgebeeld zijn, zijn doorgaans niet verrassend. De graffitikunstenaar staat natuurlijk met zijn spuitbus bij de versgespoten muur; de schoenmaker tussen zijn schoenen en gereedschappen.

Maar wel opvallend is de grote rol die die attributen in de foto spelen: ze zijn vaak even belangrijk als de geportretteerde. De hoeveelheid leesten, garen en schoenmakersgereedschappen is duizelingwekkend. Het stroomaggregaat en het reuzenrad trekken meer aandacht dan de man die ze op de kermis bedient.

De struisvogels, kasuarissen en nandu’s winnen het van de collectiebeheerder vogels en zoogdieren van Naturalis (grappig detail in deze foto: de beheerder heeft het naamlabeltje van een vogel in zijn hand, terwijl een vergelijkbare naamtag aan zijn eigen broek bungelt – de mens als gelabeld dier).

Wat dit werk van de stadsfotograaf zo bevredigend maakt en niet vanzelfsprekend, is dat de foto’s zo veel laten zien van de verborgen stad. Op het dak van Pieterskerk, onder water bij de Beestenmarkt, staande in een vers gedolven graf, tussen een kudde schapen midden in de stad. Hij toont de moskee aan de Willem de Zwijgerlaan van binnen, en Leiden van boven vanuit het perspectief van de torenkraanmachinist. Maar hij laat je ogen ook wennen aan de duisternis waarin een blinde vrouw door de stad loopt met haar hond, waarin een graffitikunstenaar zijn illegale werk doet en aan de geestenwereld van het medium Leidse Bep.

TAAL Maar wat moet die tekst onder de foto’s? Verknoeit Rob Overmeer het effect van zijn beelden niet door er de faculteit taal aan toe te voegen: niet zomaar een fotobijschriftje, maar stukken van 300 woorden?

Die teksten voegen verrassend veel toe. Net als fotodetective Hans Aarsman, die foto’s bekijkt met de loep en vragen stelt over wat erop te zien valt, zo geeft Overmeer vorm aan zijn eigen nieuwsgierigheid en die van zijn publiek met talrijke vragen. Die nieuwsgierigheid wordt beloond en de blik van de kijker wordt gericht. ‘Hebben jullie dan geen man?’, vraagt Overmeer aan de dames van het Sint Anna Aalmoeshuishofje. ‘Ik doe het even zonder,’ zegt Wil. ‘En ik doe er niet meer aan’, zegt Carolien. Een van de anonieme apparaatcontroleurs bij de kringloopwinkel blijkt na doorvragen een Tibetaanse monnik te zijn. Aan Corine met haar hond Co vraagt hij hoe zij de stad beleeft. ‘Leiden bestaat voor mij uit fragmenten. Ik hoor bijvoorbeeld de holle klank van Museum de Lakenhal als ik langs de deur loop. Of ik ruik de kruidige geur van V&D.’ Overmeer schrijft zelf ook met zijn neus en zijn oren open. Hij laat ons mee ruiken aan de formalinegeuren van de struisvogels in het Naturalisdepot.

‘De meeuwen vind ik fijn ruiken, lekker zoet.’ Hij attendeert ons op de urine en duivenpoep onder de Grote Havenbrug.

Hij luistert goed naar de bijzondere taal van zijn onderwerpen. ‘Ik doe promotieonderzoek naar de eigenschappen van materialen zoals lanthaanaluminium-strontiumtitanaat.’ Met de brugwachter raakt hij in gesprek over de bediening van de brug: ‘De brugwachter komt hier niet beneden. Hij draait de brug boven bij de Chinees.’ ‘De Chinees?’ ‘Ja, zo noemen we het apparaat in het brugwachtershuisje waarmee je de brug open en dicht doet.’ De bestuursleden van de studentenvereniging blijken er ook eigen woorden op na te houden: zooien, ludieke boetes en regelen: ‘In het bestuur wordt er niet geregeld.’

‘Geregeld?’ ‘Regelen is onze term voor vozen.’

STADSWACHTERS Met foto’s en tekst geeft Overmeer ons inkijkjes in diverse werelden die zich binnen de stad blijken te bevinden. Hij stapt uit de coulissen – eenmaal in zijn slotfoto op de Burcht en telkens in zijn tekst – en verkent beleefd en nieuwsgierig wat hij aantreft. Zo blijkt Leiden een illuminatiedeskundige te hebben, iemand die lijken zoekt in troebel water, een geocacher, een lachclub. En een kasmedewerker van de Hortus botanicus die eigenlijk operazanger is.

De levens en bezigheden van alle geportretteerden haken wonderlijk op elkaar in. Ze vormen met elkaar de onzichtbare structuren waaruit de stad bestaat. De brugwachter heeft contact met de sleepbootkapitein, de blinde oriënteert zich op de klanken van de beiaardier, de technische dienst repareert de brug van de brugwachter, en daaronder slaapt weer de dakloze. De graffitikunstenaar haat begrijpelijkerwijs de camera's die overal in de stad toezicht houden en die worden weer beheerd door de man op de centrale meldkamer van de politie.

Het zijn niet de scorende spitsen van de stad, maar de middenvelders die de meeste meters maken. Het zijn de mensen die buiten het blikveld van de gewone PR-fotografie vallen. Rob Overmeer heeft ze op zijn tochten door zijn geheime stad gevonden en voor ons bevraagd en belicht. Samen vormen ze de stad met hun eigen drijfveren en bezigheden. Het zijn de stadswachters.

Het laboratorium sist en tikt met een vast ritme. Mijn reis als Stadsfotograaf van Leiden begin ik op de faculteit Natuurkunde.

‘Ik doe promotieonderzoek naar de eigenschappen van materialen zoals lanthaanaluminaat-strontiumtitanaat’, zegt promovendus Arthur den Haan terwijl hij soepel tussen de apparatuur door beweegt. Hier en daar verandert hij iets aan de opstelling. Arthur laat me de cryostaat zien, een blauw vat waarin het -273,14 graden Celsius is. ‘In deze ton is het 0,01 graden boven het absolute nulpunt.

In 1908 lukte het de Leidse wetenschapper Kamerlingh Onnes voor het eerst heliumgas vloeibaar te maken. Op dat moment was zijn laboratorium het koudste punt op aarde. Nu wordt vloeibaar helium over de hele wereld gebruikt voor wetenschappelijk onderzoek’, vertelt Arthur.

‘Waarom zo koud?’, informeer ik.

‘Materialen bewegen bij een koude temperatuur op moleculair niveau veel minder waardoor je beter kunt waarnemen. Het uiteindelijke doel is om eiwitten en virussen beter in beeld te brengen.’

Op zijn computer bekijkt Arthur de diagrammen en getallen. ‘Natuurkunde vind ik een mooie wetenschap’, verklaart hij. ‘Het kan nieuwe inzichten geven over de zeer rijke natuur en dat kan weer leiden tot technologische ontwikkelingen. Het is zoals Kamerlingh Onnes ooit zei: ‘Door meten tot weten’.’

I start my journey as city photographer at the Faculty of Science. ‘I’m working on a doctoral study on the characteristics of materials such as lanthanum aluminate-strontium titanate,’ PhD candidate Arthur den Haan remarks while easily maneuvering through the equipment.

Occasionally he changes something in the set-up. Arthur shows me the cryostat, a blue vessel in which a temperature of -273.14 degrees Celsius is maintained. ‘It’s 0.01 degrees above absolute zero in this vat. In 1908 the Leiden scientist Kamerlingh Onnes first succeeded in liquefying nitrogen. At the time, his laboratory was the coldest place on earth. Now it’s being used throughout the world for scientific research,’ Arthur explains. ‘Why that cold?’ I ask him. ‘At a very low temperature, materials don’t move as much on a molecular level, allowing you to easily observe them. The actual goal is to better understand and map proteins and viruses.’

Arthur studies some diagrams and numbers on his computer. ‘I think physics is a wonderful science’, he reveals. ‘It can lead to new insights about our very rich world and that in turn can lead to technological developments. It’s like Kamerlingh Onnes once said: “Acquiring knowledge through measurements.”’

Het regent dikke druppels als ik sleepboot De Karin op stap. Kapitein Marcel Kappee staat op me te wachten in de kajuit. ‘Welkom aan boord’, zegt hij met een luide stem.

Marcel kruipt de machinekamer in om de sleepboot startklaar te maken. ‘In weer en wind’, roept hij, terwijl hij de motor start. ‘We varen uit.' ‘Ruig vak heb je’, zeg ik.

We varen in de stortregen de stad in. ‘Ja, je moet dit leven aankunnen. Mijn wieg stond boven op de machinekamer.

Als de motor uitging, begon ik te brullen, zei mijn vader altijd.’ ‘Wat sleep je zoal?’, vraag ik. ‘Beunbakken voor slib, jachten met motorpech of woonboten die aan het zinken zijn. Een paar jaar geleden hielp ik met het uitbaggeren van de grachten. En regelmatig belt de politie me of ik een boot wil wegslepen’, dreunt Marcel op. ‘Krijg je geen gedonder met de eigenaar als je een schip wegsleept?’ ‘Soms loopt het uit de hand. Ooit kwam er een man met een pikhaak op me af, maar dat was niet echt een probleem.

Ik ben altijd recht door zee.’ ‘Hoe verplaats je een zinkend schip?’, vraag ik. ‘Je douwt een doek in het vet en die prop je daarna in het lek. Daarop leg je een stuk metaal of een stoeptegel. Je vaart dan voorzichtig naar de scheepswerf terwijl je de boot blijft leegpompen.’ ‘Dan sta je zeker vaak met je voeten in het water?’ ‘Ja, dat hoort erbij. En het is altijd slepen met kabels en kettingen. Ik heb een hernia, mijn knieën zijn kapot en mijn handen zijn altijd smerig.

Behalve vandaag. Ze zijn toevallig schoon omdat ik gisteravond de vaat heb gedaan.’

It’s raining heavily when I climb aboard tugboat De Karin. Captain Marcel Kappee is waiting for me in the cabin. ‘Welcome aboard,’ he says loudly. Marcel climbs into the engine room to prepare the tugboat for departure. ‘Whatever the conditions,’ he shouts while starting the engine. ‘Let’s get going.’ ‘Rough business you’re in,’ I tell him. And we start our journey to the city through the pouring rain.

‘Yep, you have to be able to deal with this life. When I was a baby, my cradle was placed right above the engine room. Whenever the engine was turned off, I would start crying, my father used to say.’ ‘What are you usually towing?’ I ask him. ‘Sludge containers, yachts with engine trouble or houseboats that have started to sink. A few years ago I also helped dredging the canals. And the police regularly ask me to tow a boat away,’ Marcel rattles away. ‘Is there ever any trouble with the owners of boats you tow away?’ ‘Sometimes things can get out of hand. Once a man charged at me with a pickaxe, but that wasn’t really a problem. I’m just always very straightforward.’ ‘How do you move a sinking ship?’ I ask him. ‘You dunk a rag in fat, and stuff that into the leak. And you place a piece of metal or a large tile on top of it. You then float carefully to the harbour, while continuously pumping water out of the boat.’ ‘I suppose you often get your feet wet?’ ‘Yep, that’s part of the job. And I’m always dragging with cables and chains. I’ve got a hernia, my knees are bust and my hands are always dirty. Except for today. They happen to be clean because I did the dishes last night.’

Eén voor één komen de lachers binnen. Bij het weerzien van elkaar wordt er meteen gelachen. Het werkt aanstekelijk. Tijdens het opbouwen van mijn lampen, begin ik ook te gniffelen. Hanneke en Franneke roepen iedereen bij elkaar voor de lachsessie. ‘Drink als je wilt drinken en ga naar de toilet als je moet, want lachen ontspant al je spieren’, zegt Franneke.

‘Begin allemaal maar lachgeluiden te maken’, zegt Hanneke. ‘Ha ha ha ha ha’, klinkt het van alle kanten. De lachers gaan er vol tegenaan. Het duurt niet lang of iedereen ligt in een deuk. Er wordt een heel programma afgewerkt.

Van een kleine telefoonglimlach, tot de ultieme bevrijdende lach. Door de uitgelaten stemming raak ik de controle over de fotoshoot kwijt. Ik lach als een boer met kiespijn en voel me een dissident in het vrolijke geheel.

Uiteindelijk verbreek ik de lachsessie en neem de leiding.

De vrolijkste lacher plaats ik in het midden en ik vraag aan iedereen of ze daar omheen de bevrijdende lach willen doen. De lachers doen het met veel plezier. Ik kan de foto maken.

‘Waarom lachen jullie eigenlijk?’, vraag ik na de sessie aan Hanneke en Franneke. ‘Lachen is gezond. Je stresshormonen gaan omlaag.’ zegt Hanneke met een vrolijk gezicht.

‘Je hebt het gevoel dat je omhoog gaat, net als in de film van Mary Poppins’, vult Franneke blij aan. ‘Maar is dit gelach wel echt?’, vraag ik sceptisch. ‘Of het nou een echte lach is of een nep lach?’ ‘Dat maakt niet uit. Je spant je lachspieren aan en dat zorgt voor ontspanning. Je ziet het glas daarna weer halfvol.’ ‘Wat is een goede plek om te lachen?’ ‘We lachen meestal in een clubhuis in de Stevenshof, maar met mooi weer lachen we ook wel eens op de burcht. Het maakt eigenlijk niet uit, als we de lach maar kunnen verspreiden.’

One by one, the laughers enter. As soon as they see one another, people start laughing immediately. It’s infectious. I’m starting to smirk as well while setting up my lamps. Hanneke and Franneke call everyone together to start the laughing session. ‘Drink something if you want and go to the toilet if you have to, because laughing loosens all of your muscles,’ Franneke tells me.

‘Start making laughing noises,’ Hanneke says to the group. ‘Ha ha ha ha ha,’ begins to fill the room. The laughers give it everything they have. It doesn’t take long before everyone’s cracking up. A whole variety programme seems to follow. From a small telephone smile, to the ultimate, liberating laugh. The relaxed atmosphere makes me lose the control over the photo-shoot. I’m laughing on the wrong side of my face and I feel like a dissenter in this merry affair. Finally I end the laughing session and take charge. I put the most cheerful laugher in the centre, and ask the rest of the group to laugh their most liberating laugh. They respond cheerfully. I can finally take the picture.

‘Why do you laugh like this?’ I ask Hanneke and Franneke when the session is over. ‘Laughing is healthy. It lowers your stress hormones,’ Hanneke responds cheerfully.

‘You feel like you’re floating, as if you’re in that Mary Poppins film,’ Franneke adds with a smile. ‘But is all this laughing real?’ I ask them sceptically. ‘A true laugh or a forced laugh, it doesn’t matter. You’re exercising your laughing muscles, which relaxes you. Suddenly the glass becomes half-full again.’ ‘What’s a good place to laugh?’

‘We usually laugh in the clubhouse in the Stevenshof, but weather permitting we also go to the Burcht to laugh. The location doesn’t really matter, as long as we can get other people laughing too.’

Vijf kwispelende honden komen nieuwsgierig aan me snuffelen. Het zijn geen gewone honden. De honden van hondenverpleegster Mirjam Lefel zijn getraumatiseerd, gehandicapt of heel oud. Ik aai ze over hun kop. We zijn snel vrienden. ‘Zullen we een wandelingetje gaan maken?’, vraagt Mirjam. De honden lopen meteen naar de deur. Mirjam tilt de oudste hond in de hondenkar. Hij laat het gewillig toe. Een klein hondje krijgt een rolstoeltje en een andere moet vandaag helaas thuis blijven. ‘Besteed je veel tijd aan je honden?’, vraag ik. ‘Ik sta om vijf uur op om de honden te verzorgen. Daar ben ik de hele ochtend mee bezig. Elke middag maken we een lange wandeling door Leiden.’ ‘Waarom zorg je voor gehandicapte honden?’

‘Als kind had ik een zwakke gezondheid. Ik weet dus wat het is om ziek te zijn. De meeste honden die bij mij komen, zijn getraumatiseerd door verwaarlozing. Door lange wandelingen in de buitenlucht worden de honden fit en komen ze weer in balans. En ik vertel de honden dat ze weer hond mogen zijn.’ ‘Hoe vertel je dat?’ ‘Als ik met honden wil communiceren, doe ik dat met mijn gevoel.

Op straat wordt Mirjam vaak aangesproken en nagekeken. De honden krijgen veel aaitjes. Een voorbijganger wil zelfs geld doneren. Mirjam: ‘In het begin werden sommige mensen boos als ze mij met mijn honden zagen.

Laat ze toch inslapen, hoorde ik dan. Inmiddels vinden de mensen het bijzonder. Er was laatst een oude dame die in huilen uitbarstte toen ze ons zag lopen. Ze vertelde me dat ze net haar hond had laten inslapen omdat deze verlamd was geraakt. Nu zag ze dat er ook rolstoelen bestaan voor honden. Helaas, net te laat.’

Five dogs with wagging tails are sniffing around me curiously. These are not ordinary dogs. The dogs veterinary nurse Mirjam Lefel takes care of are either traumatised, handicapped or very old. I pat their heads and we quickly become friends. ‘Shall we go for a little walk?’

Mirjam suggests. The dogs immediately make for the door. The oldest dog is placed in a dog carriage. He doesn’t struggle. A tiny dog is put in a little wheelchair and, sadly, has to stay home today. 'Do you invest a lot of time in your dogs?’ I ask Mirjam. ‘I get up at five in the morning to take care of them. It takes me all morning. And every afternoon we go on a long walk through Leiden.’ ‘Why are you taking care of handicapped dogs?’ I ask her. ‘As a child I was always in poor health, so I know exactly what it’s like to be ill. Most dogs who arrive here have been traumatised by neglect. With our long walks in the open air, the dogs become fit again and they get back in balance. And I’m letting the dogs know they can be dogs again.’ ‘How do you do that?’ ‘If I want to communicate with the dogs, I use my own feelings. Dogs talk with their bodies.’

‘Many people greet and stare at Mirjam on the street. The dogs are petted a lot. A passerby even wants to donate money. Mirjam: ‘In the beginning some people reacted angrily on seeing me with my dogs.

Just put them down, I was told. But nowadays people find it special.

The other day an old lady burst out in tears when she saw us walk by.

She told me that she had just had her dog put down because it had become paralysed. Now she suddenly learned that wheelchairs exist for dogs as well. Sadly, she was too late.’

De geur van vis en stroopwafels waait door de toren van het Stadhuis. ‘Over één minuut ga ik spelen’, zegt beiaardier Levina Pors. Ik zet snel mijn gehoorbeschermers op.

De oude toren vult zich even later met geluid. De vertrouwde klank van Leiden, maar dan loeihard. Levina bespeelt het grote klavier met haar vuisten. Een snel riedeltje is een hele kunst. ‘Het geluid van een klok klinkt heel lang door. Het is de kunst om er geen brei van te maken’, schreeuwt Levina na het eerste muziekstuk. ‘Je hebt vanaf hier niet echt contact met je publiek’, schreeuw ik terug. ‘De mensen moeten naar me luisteren, of ze nou willen of niet’, schreeuwt Levina lachend. ‘Maar de meeste mensen vinden mijn muziek gezellig. Ik speel voor alle rangen en standen iets herkenbaars. Het is een eeuwenoude traditie. Het carillon verbindt de mensen en de stad met elkaar.’

Na precies een uur is het concert afgelopen. Levina verandert een grote stekker in het instrument. ‘Hiermee zet ik de automatische klok weer aan. Ieder kwartier klinkt er een kort melodietje. Dat kan ik thuis vanaf mijn computer instellen. En voordat de basklok het hele uur slaat, klinkt er een klokkenspelletje van 40 seconden.’ We beginnen aan de afdaling via de smalle trappen en langs de zware klokken. ‘Meestal gebruik ik de basklokken niet als er raadsvergaderingen zijn. Dat dreunt teveel door, maar soms heb ik er lak aan, dan speel ik lekker fortissimo en geef ik ‘m flink op z’n lazer.’

The smell of fish and syrup waffles is wafting through the city hall’s tower. ‘I’ll start playing in one minute,’ carillonist Levia Pors tells me.

I quickly put on my ear protectors just before the old tower fills with noise. It’s Leiden’s traditional melody, but then extremely loud. Levina strikes the large keyboard with her fists. A quick tune is an art form on its own. ‘The sound of a bell resonates for a long time. The skill is in not making it an unintelligible mess,’ Levina yells after the first piece. ‘But you don’t really have any contact with your audience,’ I respond loudly. ‘The people have to listen to me, whether they want to or not,’ Levina yells gleefully. ‘But most people enjoy my music. I’m playing something recognizable for people from all walks of life. It’s a tradition that goes back for centuries. The carillon unites the city and its inhabitants.’

After exactly an hour the concert finishes. Levina changes a large plug in the instrument. ‘This turns the automatic clock back on. Every fifteen minutes a short melody is played. I can program that from my PC at home. And before the large bass bell strikes the whole hour, a carillon tune is played for 40 seconds.’ We start to descend via the narrow stairs, going past the heavy bells. ‘I don’t usually use the bass bells when the city council convenes. It thunders on too long, though sometimes I ignore those concerns, play a nice fortissimo and really let ‘em have it.’

Het is vroeg in de morgen. Op de begraafplaats heerst een serene rust. Wil van der Blom en Sjaak van Sonsbeek werken in de buitendienst van Rhijnhof. ‘Mag ik jullie hier wel fotograferen?’, vraag ik onwennig. ‘Ja hoor, we delven zo’n 200 graven per jaar. Er is niets geheimzinnigs aan.

Iedereen mag dit zien. Behalve als we een graf moeten ruimen of schudden. Dat doen we buiten het zicht van bezoekers. Iedere overledene heeft recht op privacy’, zegt Wil. ‘Is het niet vreemd om tussen de doden te werken?’, vraag ik. ‘Nee, zeker niet. Ik werk hier al 27 jaar en ken bijna alle namen van de overledenen. Ik weet precies waar ze liggen. Ook veel nabestaanden ken ik persoonlijk. In het begin lopen ze verdoofd van verdriet over de begraafplaats. Na een paar weken vraag ik altijd even hoe het met ze gaat’, zegt Wil. ‘Verdriet is een acceptatieproces. Je geliefde komt écht niet meer thuis. Ik zit wel eens een half uur met iemand te praten op een bankje. Met sommige bezoekers krijg je een band’, vult Sjaak aan.

Naast het delven van de graven zijn Wil en Sjaak verantwoordelijk voor alles wat er op de begraafplaats gebeurt.

Samen met de nabestaanden kiezen ze een graf uit. Ook lopen ze gekleed in een zwart pak voor de kist uit. En uiteindelijk laten zij de kist zakken.

‘Soms komt een stervende zelf zijn graf uitzoeken. Een half jaar later ben je zo iemand aan het begraven. Het is het laatste wat je voor iemand kan doen. Ik vind het een mooie en eervolle baan’, meent Sjaak. En Wil vult aan: ‘Rhijnhof is een mooie plek in de stad, maar het is ook de plek waar de meeste tranen liggen. We zeggen uit respect ook nooit ‘tot ziens’, maar altijd ‘heel veel sterkte en wel thuis’.’

It’s early in the morning. Serenity rules over the cemetery. Wil van der Blom and Sjaak van Sonsbeek are working in the grounds department of Rhijnhof. ‘Am I even allowed to photograph you here?’ I ask them uncomfortably. ‘Sure, we dig about 200 graves a year. There’s nothing secretive about it. Everyone can see it. Except when we have to vacate or re-use a grave. We do it out of sight of any visitors. People who have passed away also have the right to privacy,’ Will tells me. ‘Isn’t it strange to work while surrounded by the dead?’ I ask them. ‘No, definitely not. I’ve been working here for 27 years and I know the names of most of the deceased. I know exactly where they are.

I also know many of the next of kin. In the beginning many walk across the cemetery dazed by grief. After a few weeks I often ask them how they’re doing,’ Wil answers. ‘Grief is a process of acceptance. Your loved one really isn’t coming home again. Sometimes I find myself sitting on a bench with someone and talking for more than half an hour. You really get a connection with some visitors,’ Sjaak adds.

Besides digging the graves, Wil and Sjaak are responsible for just about everything that happens in the cemetery. Together with the next of kin they pick a location. They also walk in front of the coffin in a dark suit. And finally they lower the coffin into the ground.

‘Sometimes a dying person will come to pick the location of his own grave. Six months later you’re burying someone like that. It’s the last thing you can do for them. I think it’s a good and honourable job,’ Sjaak tells me. Then Will adds: ‘Rhijnhof is a beautiful place in the city, but also the place where most of its tears are shed. Out of respect we never say ‘goodbye’, but always ‘all the best and get home safely’.’

‘Ik ben 82 jaar en mijn man is 87. Niemand gelooft dat wij al 65 jaar getrouwd zijn’, zegt Thea van der Eijnden.

Haar ogen lachen. ‘Zonder ex hoor je er tegenwoordig niet meer bij’, grapt haar echtgenoot Ton. We drinken koffie bij restaurant Koetjes en Kalfjes. Het briljante echtpaar is hier kind aan huis. Ze houden van uitgaan. Al doen ze dat tegenwoordig iets minder vaak. ‘Tafel zeven is onze vaste tafel. Als we met meer mensen komen dan nemen we tafel vijf, bij het raam’, zegt Thea. ‘Wat is er in de stad veranderd in 65 jaar?’, vraag ik. ‘In de Breestraat zaten vroeger klasse winkels. De obers liepen toen nog in jacquet en de serveersters droegen een kroontje’, zegt Ton. ‘Mijn cocktailjurkjes kocht ik toen bij modezaak Macks.

Die zat tegenover het Stadhuis. En bij Riël kon je prachtige avondkleding kopen. Mijn bonthandschoenen kocht ik bij bontwinkel Van Egmond, tegenover De Harmonie.’

‘De Harmonie is trouwens de enige zaak die nog over is’, vult Ton aan. ‘Alleen is het nu geen restaurant meer maar een disco.’

Ton werkte voor de typemachinefabriek. Thea liep modeshows in Zuid-Afrika. Ze kregen vier kinderen en gingen wekelijks naar feestjes. Nog steeds krijgen ze veel uitnodigingen. ‘In de stad is het ’s avonds niet veilig meer en er zitten rolluiken voor de etalages’, zegt Ton. Thea: ‘Wat nu wel heel gezellig is en wat je vroeger niet had, zijn de terrasjes. Vroeger zat alles binnen. We dansen graag en overal. Ook als we thuiskomen na een feestje. Daarna doen we de kaarsjes aan en bespreken bij een wijntje alle mensen die we hebben ontmoet.’ ‘Soms zie je wel eens mensen in een restaurant zitten zonder dat ze iets zeggen. Of ze kijken de hele tijd op schermpjes’, zegt Ton. ‘Dat doen wij niet. Wij praten altijd’, zegt Thea plagend tegen haar man. ‘Ja, als ik het niet doe, dan doe jij het wel’, plaagt hij terug.

‘I’m 82 years old and my husband is 87. Nobody believes we’ve been married for 65 years,’ Thea van der Eijnden says. Her eyes are smiling. ‘Without an ex you just don’t count anymore,’ her husband Ton cheerfully jokes. We’re drinking coffee at restaurant Koetjes en Kalfjes. The brilliant couple are regulars here. They love going out, although they don’t do it as often anymore. ‘Table seven is our regular table. Though if we bring more people we take table five, by the window,’ Thea says. ‘What has changed in the city the past 65 years?’ I ask them. ‘The Breestraat used to be filled with high quality shops. The waiters wore morning dress, while the waitresses wore little crowns,’ Ton answers. ‘I used to buy my cocktail dresses at the fashion boutique Macks. It was located opposite City Hall. And at Riël you could buy lovely evening attire. I bought my fur gloves from the fur shop Van Egmond, across from De Harmonie.’ ‘By the way, De Harmonie is the only business that’s still open,’ Ton adds. ‘Though it isn’t a restaurant anymore, but a discotheque.’

Ton used to work for a typewriter factory. Thea performed in fashion shows in South Africa. Together they had four children and went to parties every week. They’re still get lots of invitations. ‘The city’s not as safe as it used to be and shop windows are covered by shutters,’ Ton remarks. Thea: ‘What you didn’t have much then, are the lovely terraces. Everything was inside. We love to dance, anywhere and everywhere, even when we come home from a party. We light some candles, drink a glass of wine, and discuss all the people we’ve met,’ Thea says. ‘Sometimes you see people in restaurants sitting around without saying a word. Or they’re always looking at their little screens,’ Ton says. ‘We don’t do that. We’re always talking,’ Thea says teasingly to her husband. ‘Yeah, and if I don’t, you will,’ he responds.

‘Ik ben nu de centrale verdediger, maar ik zou graag de nummer tien zijn. Dan mag ik meer naar voren spelen’, zegt de twaalfjarige Samantha van Diemen met zachte stem. We drinken thee in de kantine van UVS, samen met haar vader en de jeugdvoorzitter. ‘Hoe vaak voetbal je in de week?’, vraag ik. ‘Op het Da Vinci, doe ik highschool voetbal, ik speel in de D1 bij UVS en train ook twee middagen met het regionale team van de KNVB. Op zaterdag speel ik altijd een wedstrijd. En ik ben toegelaten tot de opleiding van FC Twente. Mijn vader brengt me overal heen.’ ‘Waardoor ben je zo goed?’, vraag ik.

De voorzitter neemt enthousiast het woord: ‘Als Samantha zich zo blijft ontwikkelen dan speelt ze binnenkort in het Nationaal team onder de 16.’ Samantha’s vader vult aan: ‘Ze is erg slim, ze luistert goed en schuwt geen enkel duel.’

Als we even later op het gras staan om de foto te maken, stuurt Samantha haar vader en de voorzitter het veld af.

Haar vader moet lachen. Hij is het gewend om aan de zijlijn te staan. Ik vraag het nog een keer. ‘Waardoor ben je zo goed?’ ‘Kijk, een technische speler benader ik anders dan een snelle speler. Bij de een focus ik me op de bal, bij de ander reageer ik fysiek. En als er toch een speler voorbij komt, dan tik ik ‘m tegen de enkels’, zegt Samantha, terwijl ze de bal loepzuiver in het doel draait. ‘Maar dat mag toch niet?’, zeg ik. ‘Een goede scheidsrechter weet dat het erbij hoort’, zegt ze. Ondertussen blijft ze met de bal goochelen. ‘Wil je later prof worden?’ ‘Nee, ik wil medical examiner worden. Dan ga ik de doodsoorzaak onderzoeken van mensen die vermoord zijn. Dat is meestal een mysterie, want je weet nooit hoe het is gebeurd.’

‘I’m currently a centre back, but I would love to play as a second striker. Then I’d be allowed to attack more,’ twelve-year-old Samantha van Diemen tells me in a soft voice. We’re having tea together in the canteen of UVS, along with her father and the chairman of the youth programme. ‘How much football do you play a week?’ I ask her.

I participate in high school football at the Da Vinci College, I play in the D1 at UVS and then also train twice a week with the regional team of the KNVB. I play a match on Saturdays, and I’ve been admitted to the youth programme of FC Twente. My dad takes me everywhere.’ ‘Why are you so good at this?’ I ask her.

The chairman answers enthusiastically: ‘If Samantha continues to develop the way she’s doing, she’ll soon be playing for the under-16 national team. Samantha’s dad adds: ‘She’s very bright, listens well and isn’t afraid of any opponent.’

When we’re standing on the grass for the photograph moments later, Samantha sends her father and the chairman off the pitch. Her father just laughs. He’s used to standing on the sidelines. I ask her again: ‘Why are you so good at this?’ ‘Look, I approach a technical player very differently than I would a fast player. With the one, I focus on the ball, and I respond physically towards the other. And if someone does get past me, I tap them on the ankles,’ Samantha tells me while flawlessly shooting at the goal. ‘But surely that isn’t allowed?’ I respond. ‘A good referee knows it’s part of the game,’ she says. Meanwhile, she doesn’t stop performing tricks with the ball. ‘Do you want to go professional when you grow up?’ ‘No, I want to be a medical examiner. Then I’d be investigating the cause of death for people who’ve been murdered.

That’s usually a mystery, because you never know how it happened.’

‘Hoe vaak ben je hier?’ vraag ik aan vogelverzorger Cor Geus. ‘Ik kom hier iedere morgen, zeven dagen in de week. We werken in ploegen en hebben 24 uur continu dienst. Als er ’s avonds iets met de vogels gebeurt, dan kom ik er meteen aan. Ik werk met een levende have en daar moet je met veel zorg mee omgaan’, zegt Cor terwijl hij met een plamuurmes de poepjes van de muur schraapt. ‘Waarom staat hier eigenlijk een volière met vogels?’, vraag ik. ‘Deze volière hoort bij Leiden. Iedereen is ermee opgegroeid. Opa’s en oma’s wandelen hier langs met hun kleinkinderen. En in de stad betegelt iedereen zijn tuintje. Heggen verdwijnen en daarmee ook de vogels. Sommige kinderen weten niet waar jonge vogeltjes vandaan komen. In onze broedhokjes leggen de meeste vogeltjes in het voorjaar zo’n drie eitjes. Ook komen veel Leidenaars een overbodig parkietje brengen. Deze gaat eerst in quarantaine. Als ze gezond blijkt, dan mag ze de volière in.’

‘Het park rondom de volière staat ook bekend als een hangplek’, zeg ik. ‘Er zitten hier regelmatig verslaafden.

Dat is jammer, maar het heeft ook een voordeel.

Ze houden namelijk wél de vogeltjes in de gaten.’

‘How often are you here?’ I ask bird keeper Cor Geus. ‘I come here every morning, seven days a week. We work in shifts and are on duty for 24 hours at a time. If something happens to the birds late at night, I’m immediately on my way. I work with livestock, which requires very attentive care,’ Cor says while scraping bird droppings off the wall with a putty-knife. ‘Why is there an aviary fully of birds here, anyway?’

I ask him. ‘This aviary is a part of Leiden. Everyone grew up with it.

Not only that, the inhabitants of the city are all paving over their gardens. Hedges are disappearing and therefore the birds are as well. Some young children don't even know where birds come from anymore. During spring, many small birds lay up to three eggs in our nesting boxes. We also have a lot of Leideners bringing unwanted parakeets to us. First the birds are quarantined, and if they turn out to be healthy, they can join the others in the aviary.’

‘The park surrounding the aviary is also known to be a hangout,’ I tell him. ‘It’s true that addicts regularly hang out here. That’s a shame, but there’s at least one advantage. They do keep an eye on all the birds.’

‘Durf je wel zo hoog?’, vraagt torenkraanmachinist Ruud Weenink. ‘Ik ga het proberen’, zeg ik.

We beginnen aan de klim van 40 meter. De hijskraan staat pal naast het Waaggebouw, zo’n beetje in het midden van de stad. Ik draag mijn rugtas met camera’s op mijn buik, anders pas ik niet door het trapgat. ‘De eerste keer is het altijd spannend’, zegt Ruud terwijl hij behendig de trappen opklimt. Hoe hoger we komen, hoe steviger ik de metalen buizen vastpak. De hoogte voel ik in mijn benen en op een of andere manier is de diepte erg dichtbij in een hijskraan. Als we boven aankomen, moet ik tot mijn grote verbazing over een hoge rand klimmen.

Het waait enorm. Daarna ben ik veilig in de cabine. Het valt me op dat de huizen dicht op elkaar staan en dat de grachten erg bepalend zijn. Ruud gaat op zijn stoel zitten en verplaatst op de bouwplaats een metalen constructie.

Het radiootje speelt en in de hoek pruttelt een koffie­ machine.

‘Wat is er moeilijk aan je vak?’, vraag ik. ‘De slinger in de last’, zegt Ruud trots. ‘Als ik een draai maak, dan slingert de vracht er achter aan. Ik werk heel nauwkeurig. Zeker met al die monumentale panden hier beneden. En de mensen op de bouwplaats hebben het niet altijd door als ik iets verplaats. Ik houd de loopbeweging van de mannen scherp in de gaten.’

Een paar keer per dag loopt Ruud naar de top van de giek om de bewegende onderdelen te smeren. Ook nu. Ik loop met hem mee. ‘Houd je de Leidse inwoners ook scherp in de gaten?’, vraag ik terwijl ik een bootje met studentes voorbij zie varen. ‘Nee joh, daar heb ik geen tijd voor, maar ik geniet wel van het uitzicht, dat begrijp je wel.’

‘Do you really dare to go this high up?’ tower crane operator Ruud Weenink asks. ‘I’ll try,’ I respond.

We begin with a 40-metre climb. The crane has been set up right next to the Weigh House, almost exactly in the city’s centre. My backpack with cameras has been strapped to my stomach to make sure I fit through the stairwell. ‘The first time is always the most exciting,’ Ruud remarks while nimbly climbing up the stairs. The higher we go, the tighter my grip on the metal bars becomes. The height is affecting my legs and somehow the depth feels very near when you’re up in the crane.

To my great amazement, I have to climb over a high ledge once we reach the top. It’s incredibly windy. Then I’m safe in the cabin. I immediately notice that all the houses are built closely together, while the canals determine the city’s lay-out. Ruud takes a seat and moves a metal structure across the building site. The radio is playing and a coffee maker is rumbling in the corner.

‘What is difficult about your profession?’ I ask him. ‘The swing in the joints,’ Ruud responds proudly. ‘Whenever I make a turn, the cargo swings along after it. I work very carefully. Especially with all these monumental buildings below. And the people on the building site don’t always notice when I move something. That’s why I always keep a close eye on where the guys below are walking.’

A few times a day, Ruud walks to the top of the jib to oil the various moving parts. Today is no exception. I walk along with him. ‘Do you also closely follow the city’s inhabitants,’ I ask when I notice a small boat filled with female students cruising along. ‘Nah, I don’t have any time for that, though I do enjoy the view. I’m sure you’ll understand.’

De Elza Hoeve ligt halverwege de mooie slingerweg langs de Vliet. Als ik het erf op loop en aan de scheepsbel tingel, word ik begroet door een blaffende herdershond. Boer Wilbert, komt achter een stal vandaan. Boerin Annika komt uit het pittoreske huis. Ze runnen samen de laatste veehouderij van Leiden. De boerderij is al eeuwen in de familie.

‘Wil je onze nieuwe stal zien?’, vraagt Wilbert. ‘We hebben 55 koeien voor de melkproductie en 50 stuks jongvee.

De koeien kunnen in deze stal gaan en staan waar ze willen en ze bepalen zelf wanneer ze gemolken worden.

Beter voor de koe en beter voor de melk.’ ‘We verzorgen ook 35 paarden in ons paardenpension en twee maal in de week komen hier schoolkinderen op de boerderij werken’, zegt Annika. ‘We willen zoveel mogelijk mensen in contact brengen met het agrarische leven. Dat is hard nodig. Op internet kan je veel leren, maar om het buitenleven te begrijpen, moet je het voelen en ruiken’, vervolgt Wilbert. ‘Het contact met de dieren is puur. Je leert een stuk verantwoordelijkheid. We zien hier de mensen altijd opknappen’, vult Annika aan.

Als ik het stel vraag waarom ze tussen de rijksweg A4 en de opkomende stad toch willen blijven werken en wonen, kijken ze elkaar aan. ‘We vinden het hier mooi en er gebeurt hier veel. In het voorjaar zien we de natuur tot leven komen en in de herfst weer tot rust. Dit is het laatste stukje agrarisch gebied van Leiden. We zijn er zuinig op. Er zal in Leiden geen boerderij meer bij komen.’

The Elza Farmhouse can be found halfway along a lovely winding road alongside the Vliet. I’m greeted by a barking shepherd dog as I walk up the farmyard and ring the ship’s bell. Farmer Wilbert appears from behind a stable. Farmer’s wife Annika emerges from the picturesque cottage. Together they manage the last livestock farm in Leiden.

The farm has been owned by the family for centuries. ‘Do you want to see our new stable?’ asks Wilbert. ‘We have 55 dairy cows and 50 calves. The cows are allowed to go where they please and decide for themselves when they have to be milked. It’s better for the cow and better for the milk.’ ‘We also take care of 35 horses in our stables and twice a week schoolchildren come to work on the farm,’ Annika says.

‘Our goal is to bring as many people as possible into contact with agrarian life. This is absolutely necessary. You can learn a lot online, but the only way to understand rural life is to feel and smell it,’ Wilbert continues. ‘Being in contact with animals is something pure. You get a slice of responsibility. We always see people cheer up,’ Annika adds.

When I ask them why they would want to live and work wedged in between the A4 highway and the expanding city, they exchange a glance. ‘We love it and so much happens here. In spring, we see nature come to life, and in autumn we see it go to rest. This is the last piece of rural land in Leiden, and we take good care of it. There’ll never be any new farms in Leiden.’

De fotoserie Stadswachters verbeeldt het verhaal van mensen die leven en werken achter de schermen van de stad. Deze stadswachters vormen de stad tot wat ze is. Fotograaf en columnist Rob Overmeer werkte een jaar aan deze serie als stadsfotograaf van Leiden. Iedere week publiceerde hij op de middenpagina van het Leidsch Dagblad een foto en daarbij een column van 300 woorden.

In dit boek is de hele serie gebundeld tot een meeslepend verhaal over de ziel van een stad.

None of them realise that they have this power, as they’re continually forced to focus on their own passions, duties and quests for survival. Recording the personal stories of these anonymous people reveals the true identity of the city.
