Uit het kantoor, in het museum Nederlandse bedrijven, banken, ziekenhuizen, universiteiten en de overheid verzamelen al meer dan een halve eeuw hedendaagse kunst. Edo Dijksterhuis betoogt in zijn essay ‘Iets kleurrijks voor aan de wand’, dat in deze collecties naar schatting bijna een kwart miljoen kunstvoorwerpen aanwezig zijn.

Ongeveer 110.000 daarvan behoren toe aan de vijftig leden van de Vereniging Bedrijfscollecties Nederland (VBCN). Ruim dertig van hen hebben bijgedragen aan dit boek en de gelijknamige tentoonstelling Out of Office. De in 2005 opgerichte VBCN, is een onafhankelijk non-profit kennisnetwerk voor Nederlandse bedrijven en (semi)publieke instellingen met een kunstcollectie. De noodzaak tot ‘het verenigen’ kwam voort uit een behoefte van de kunstadviseur of curator binnen de bedrijven. Uitwisseling van kennis op professioneel niveau was dan ook de eerste ambitie. De vereniging is gedurende haar bestaan uitgegroeid van tien naar vijftig leden. Deze leden brengen een groot en divers publiek in aanraking met kunst en creëren nieuwe verbindingen tussen kunst en de samenleving. De VBCN is hiermee een onderscheidende speler in het culturele veld.

Ooit begonnen om een prettiger werkomgeving voor de werknemers te scheppen, is het verzamelen van kunst uitgegroeid tot een serieus onderdeel van de Nederlandse bedrijfscultuur. Een mooi initiatief waarbij het mes aan twee kanten snijdt. Enerzijds inspireert de kunst medewerkers en bezoekers van de bedrijven, anderzijds betekent het bedrijfs­ mecenaat een belangrijke steun en stimulans voor de kunstenaars en de kunst in het algemeen. Dit valt ook te lezen in de interviews met curatoren van vijftien verschillende instellingen die Catharien Romijn voor deze catalogus schreef. De bedrijfscollecties zijn hiermee van groot belang voor ons culturele erfgoed.

De vraag van Singer Laren om een ontmoeting te arrangeren tussen de vele collecties en daarbij als gastheer op te treden, is door de VBCN met enthousiasme omarmd. Het is de eerste keer dat er een 150-tal Nederlandse werken van de afgelopen 75 jaar uit verschillende bedrijfscollecties gelijktijdig wordt getoond. Het gebeurt met grote regelmaat dat kunstwerken uit de bedrijfscollecties aan tentoonstellingen in musea in bruikleen worden gegeven.

De wijze waarop een kunstwerk zich in een museum gedraagt, is echter wezenlijk anders dan in een werkomgeving. Buiten het museum mag er mee ‘gespeeld’ worden en gaat het werk een andere relatie aan met de omgeving. Maar al te vaak zijn ook de omstandigheden binnen het bedrijf of instelling verre van ideaal. Out of the office and into the museum Dutch companies, banks, hospitals, universities and the government have been collecting contemporary art for more than half a century now. In his essay entitled ‘Iets kleurrijks voor aan de wand’ [Something colourful on the wall], Edo Dijksterhuis argues that these collections can be estimated to comprise nearly a quarter of a million artworks. About 110,000 of them belong to the fifty members of Netherlands Association of Corporate Art Collections (VBCN). Of those, over thirty have contributed to this book and the exhibition of the same name, Out of Office. The Netherlands Association of Corporate Art Collections, which was founded in 2005, is an independent non-profit knowledge network for Dutch companies and public or semi-public institutions that have an art collection.

The need to unite into an ‘association’ came from the need for these companies to have an art adviser or curator. Exchanging knowledge at a professional level was therefore the first goal. Over the course of time, the association has grown from ten members to fifty.

Those members bring a large and diverse cross section of the general public into contact with art, creating new links between art and society. This makes the Netherlands Association of Corporate Art Collections a noteworthy player in the cultural sector.

Collecting art was started back then in order to create more pleasant working conditions for the staff but has now grown to become a significant element of Dutch company culture. A nice initiative, and one that cuts both ways. On the one hand, the art provides inspiration for the companies’ employees and visitors, and on the other their sponsorship provides crucial support and encouragement for artists and for art in general. This can also be seen in the interviews with the curators of fifteen different institutions that Catharien Romijn wrote for this catalogue.

The Corporate art collections are therefore extremely important for our cultural heritage.

Singer Laren’s request to arrange a meeting between the various collections, offering to act as host, was enthusiastically embraced by the Netherlands Association of Corporate Art Collections.

It is the first time that about 150 Dutch works of art from the last 75 years from various Corporate art collections have been exhibited at the same time.

Artworks from the Corporate art collections are lent to museums for exhibitions with great regularity. The way an artwork ‘behaves’ in a museum is however essentially different to a working environment. Outside the museum, it can be ‘played’ with and the work has a different relationship with its surroundings. All too often, though, the conditions within the company or

wc-deur in de wand naast het object. Soms heeft dat een onverwachte meerwaarde. Mag je het kunstwerk stiekem aanraken en versterkt bijvoorbeeld de brandslang op de wand de kleuren van het kunstwerk. Deze dialoog met de omgeving en de medewerker bepaalt mede de betekenis van het kunstwerk in een bedrijfscollectie. Het op gang houden van deze dialoog blijkt in de museale omgeving ineens een uitdaging.

De opzet van de tentoonstelling is daarom niet chronologisch van aard maar thematisch, waardoor verrassende ontmoetingen ontstaan tussen kunstwerken uit verschillende periodes en stromingen.

Hierdoor zijn vaak opvallende gelijkenissen te zien in beeldtaal, terwijl de verschillende kunstenaars veelal heel andere ‘aanvliegroutes’ hebben toegepast. Door de tijd heen wordt zo een golfbeweging zichtbaar waarbinnen fenomenen in de kunst zich herhalen. Soms inspireren bedrijven kunstenaars zelfs tot het experimenteren met nieuwe materialen en technieken. Deze associatieve aanpak is ook kenmerkend voor bedrijfscollecties, waarbij oud en nieuw, jong en oud, traditioneel en vooruitkijkend elkaar versterken. Catalogus en tentoonstelling roepen op om vragen te stellen. Je te verbazen en soms zelfs te irriteren en na te denken over de gemaakte keuze.

Eigenlijk eenzelfde proces als het kunstwerk ondergaat binnen het kantoor. Het kunstwerk toont zijn kracht, ongeacht de omgeving. Langzaam ontstaat er begrip, je leest de tekst, je checkt even uit, denkt na en bent verrassend genoeg voor een moment Out of Office.

Dank aan het bestuur van de VBCN, alle curatoren en met hen de deelnemende bedrijven voor hun grote inzet en bereidheid om tijdelijk afstand te doen van hun dierbare kunstschatten. Een groot compliment aan Edo Dijksterhuis en Catharien Romijn, auteurs van dit boek. Tot slot bedanken wij Marloes van Liere, tentoonstellingscoördinator van Singer Laren, die deze uiterst complexe klus met verve geklaard heeft.

institution are far from ideal. The object won’t be in a White Cube but may have a toilet door in the wall next to it. That unexpected aspect can sometimes have added value. Perhaps you can sneakily touch the artwork, or the fire hose on the wall next to it may enhance the colours. This dialogue with the surroun­dings and the employees helps determine the significance of the work of art within a company collection. Keeping that dialogue going in a museum environment also turns out to be a challenge.

The setup of the exhibition is therefore thematic rather than chronological in nature, creating surprising juxtapositions between artworks from different periods and art movements. This often reveals striking similarities in the visual imagery, although the various artists have mostly approached it from completely different angles. Over the course of time, this creates a waveform in which phenomena within art recur. Companies sometimes even inspire artists to experiment with new materials and techniques. This associative approach is a typical feature of Corporate art collections, in which the new and young and the old and traditional and the visionary all reinforce one another. The catalogue and the exhibition both encourage people to ask ques­tions and to be astonished or even irritated, and to think about the choices that have been made.

Which is actually the same process as the artwork goes through at the office. The artwork shows its strength, no matter what the surroundings. Understanding appears slowly, you read the text, you check out for a moment and consider and – surprisingly enough – you’re Out of Office for a moment.

Ecce homo

Dat is voor de meeste mensen al genoeg om ergens een gezicht in te herkennen. We zien ze overal: het stopcontact, de maan, de neus van een auto. Het portret is dan ook een van de meest beoefende genres in de kunst. Mensen worden afgebeeld alleen, als paar, met familie of als groep. Hoogwaardigheidsbekleders en dictators worden vereeuwigd voor de eregalerij. En historische, soms mythische, figuren kijken ons aan vanuit het verleden.

Portretten vervullen onze behoefte om onszelf te zien, of iemand die erop lijkt. Ze zijn een bevestiging van ons bestaan. Tegelijkertijd doen ze een beroep op ons empathisch vermogen. Kunnen we ons vereenzelvigen met iemand met een andere huidskleur of uitheemse kleding? Is ons zelfbeeld sterk genoeg en ons mensbeeld voldoende flexibel om te kunnen omgaan met diversiteit?

Individuen worden vaak afgebeeld omdat ze het waard zijn herinnerd te worden, een beroemd schrijver of schilder bijvoorbeeld. Maar mensen worden vaker afgebeeld om wat ze uitdrukken: kracht of kwetsbaarheid, belofte, schoonheid, een attitude of juist ongemak en schaamte. Ze zijn vereeuwigd als voorbeeld van menselijke emoties of karaktertrekken. Daarmee overstijgen ze hun eigenheid en krijgen ze bijna iets allegorisch.

Sommige kunstenaars vinden dat maar onzin, psychologie van de koude grond. Voor hen is een hoofd gewoon een mooi, herkenbaar thema waar ze hun virtuositeit op kunnen botvieren. Een portret is dan een vehikel om stilistisch op te variëren. En een gezicht niet meer dan een canvas waar je een patroon of landschap op kunt zetten.

80 A circle with two dots and a line in it. For most people, that’s enough for them to start seeing a face. We see it everywhere: the electricity socket, the moon, the nose of a car. The portrait is one of the most widely-practised genres in art. People are depicted alone, as a couple, with family or in groups. Dignitaries and dictators are immortalised for the Hall of Fame.

Historical and sometimes mythical figures look at us from the past.

Portraits fulfil our need to see ourselves or someone who looks like us. They are a confirmation of our existence. At the same time, they appeal to our empathic ability. Can we identify fully with someone with a different skin colour or foreign clothing? Is our self-image strong enough and our human image flexible enough to handle diversity?

Individuals are often depicted because they are worthy of being remembered, such as a famous author or painter, but people are more often portrayed for what they express: power or vulnerability, promise, beauty, an attitude or even discomfort and shame.

They are immortalised as an example of human emotion or characteristics. They transcend their individuality and become almost allegorical.

Some artists think that is nonsense – fortune- cookie psychology. For them, a head is just an attractive and recognisable theme that they let their virtuosity loose on. A portrait is a vehicle to create stylistic variations upon and a face is nothing more than a canvas on which you can put a pattern or landscape.
