In collaboration with Uitgeverij Bas Lubberhuizen and the Nederlands Fotomuseum, Rotterdam

The first book by Ed van der Elsken completely in colour, based predominantly on his travels for the magazine Avenue, was released in 1977. The starting point for this book was love, particularly the love between man and woman as it exists all over the world. Halfway though, the focus changed and became the struggle for existence that men and women experience in solidarity (or as individual). The humanity and commitment that characterise Van der Elsken’s

work remain fascinating and baffling, which is why this publication deserves to be reprinted. Just as with the book Amsterdam!, all original slides have been cleaned, scanned and meticulously edited using a new technique developed by the restoration studio of the Nederlands Fotomuseum. This reprint presents Van der Elsken’s work in the best quality.

Ed van der Elsken (19251990) was a photographer and filmmaker who could really get excited about ordinary people and scenes. He produced over 20 photo books, including Een liefdesgeschiedenis in Saint Germain des Prés (1956), Parijs! Foto’s 1950-1954 (1981) and Amsterdam! (1979).

Judith I van Gustav Klimt is a masterpiece of the Museum Belvedere in Vienna. The painting seldom leaves Vienna, but is on display for three months from 12 March in the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag. Klimt’s masterpiece from his Golden Period, in which he incorporated real gold leaf into his paintings, forms a reflection of the decadence in Vienna round 1900, when the city was flourishing like never before on a cultural level. As a leading lady in the Biblical story of Judith and Holofernes, Judith has long been seen as a strong and chaste heroine. She saved her city from the hostile army of Nebuchadnezzar II by seducing and beheading its general Holofernes. However, Klimt portrays Judith as a dangerous femme fatale who kills Holofernes out of revenge. He was thus one of the first to show Judith in this light. Judith is not a heroic scene, but a sexually tinged masterpiece.

Portrait of Edith by Egon Schiele is one of the masterpieces in the collection of the Gemeentemuseum. Schiele depicted his wife as the model of chastity. Gemeentemuseum director Benno Tempel: ‘The works are often beautiful counterparts, but that is not the only reason to present them together. The oeuvres of Klimt and Schiele are interconnected both thematically and stylistically. Furthermore, they both form part of the Wiener Secession, the Viennese avant-garde artists’ group, and both Klimt and Schiele regularly shocked society with their explicitly erotic paintings and drawings.’

Frouke van Dijke is curator of 19th century art at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag

Klimt/Schiele. Judith and Edith is a beautifully illustrated publication about Klimt, Schiele, Judith, Edith and the female image at the end of the century.

Gerard Wessel lived for a long time on the Singel, in the centre of Amsterdam. He became fascinated by the city’s varied street life, the youth culture and the extravagant nightlife. He found all kinds of metropolitan (dis)comforts within a radius of less than 1000 metres from his house. Junkies, prostitutes, tourists, vagrants, tormented youths. All possible aspects of society, politics, music, visual arts and fashion were visible on the streets.

Often commissioned by Nieuwe Revu, Wessel captured images of daily life in the city with his Rolleiflex-Wide. He was famous and popular. For some young people, you were only really part of the nightlife scene if you had been photographed by Wessel. And so his archive grew. The city has now changed, but there are always new generations that reshape the nightlife, music and fashion scenes. Gerard Wessel has created a book in which all aspects of Amsterdam in the eighties, nineties and early 21st century come together.*

After completing his study in Photography and Photographic Technology at the MTS, Gerard Wessel moved to Amsterdam. He made numerous reportages for Nieuwe Revu. Previously released books from his hand include Jong Holland – Young Holland, Gerard Wessel fotografeert Herman Brood and Werk van Wessel.

Kraakrepubliek The legacy of a countermovement photography Bert Verhoeff (squatters movement) and Rogier Fokke (portraits) interviews Sietse van der Hoek design Scherpontwerp Dutch format 22 x 29,5 cm size 160 pages many photos paperback release April price € 29,95 NUR 653, 686 ISBN 978-94-6226-160-0

404356

As well as a documentary retrospective of the glory days of the squatters’ movement in the early eighties, Kraakrepubliek is also a study of the consequences it had on Amsterdam. Alongside all kinds of changes and achievements in the field of housing, urban planning and citizen participation, the heritage of the squatters’ movement is primarily visible in the areas of art and culture. It has become policy that vacant buildings are no longer demolished, but developed into (temporary) homes and workplaces for artists and creative entrepreneurs, coordinated by Bureau Broedplaatsen of the Amsterdam city council. The former adversaries are now united and as such are able to make significant contributions to the city as a creative centre.

And the individual squatters? Have they gone a completely different way, are they proud, are they sorry, do they understand themselves yet? And the other side, the accursed establishment: the alderman, the police officer, the lawyer, the journalist – what were their gains and losses during this remarkable, violent period of their lives? As a photographic journalist, Bert Verhoeff followed the squatters’ movement intensively during this period for various daily and weekly publications; his photos form the foundations of this book. Photographer Rogier Fokke took portrait shots of those interviewed by Sietse van der Hoek, then reporter for the Volkskrant, about the squatters’ republic.

11

Bert Verhoeff (Den Haag, 1949) won the Zilveren Camera, became Photo Journalist of the Year and worked for many newspapers and magazines before he became permanent photographer for theVolkskrant. Twelve years ago he turned his focus to long-term projects. Rogier Fokke (Nijmegen, 1952) has worked as a freelance photographer since 1989. Sietse van der Hoek (1943, Doezum) worked as a reporter for the Volkskrant and is the author of Alles klar, Nederland-Duitsland van A tot Z (2016), Langs de nullijn, de twee kanten van Nederland (2014), Mijn Groningen (2011), Supergenen en turbosporters (2009), De man van Trinidad (2008), Meneer Aart (2002) and Elfstedentocht

ANTON HEYBOER 404358

EEN LEVEN ALS KUNSTWERK

The book de drie bruiden van anton heyboer caused a sensation in 1974. Telegraaf journalist Henk van der Meyden opened doors that remained closed to others and the Netherlands became acquainted with the peculiar ‘hippie existence’ led by the famous artist at that time in the North-Holland town of Den Ilp, in a shed and some barns with three women: Maria, Lotti and Marike. Van der Meyden’s book includes ‘family snapshots’ that allegedly complied with journalists’ requests for photos of the commune that was almost completely isolated from the outside world. The great artistic significance of the photos first became clear when the Fotomuseum Den Haag brought the work of three photographers together at the end of 2010 under the title ‘Het onvermoeibaar epos’ (The tireless epos), in which Anton Heyboer is represented alongside Gerard Fieret and Miroslav Tichy.

For Anton Heyboer (1924-2005), photography signified an extension of his artistic working area. He used photos in collages or added personal texts to the raw, unedited prints. Above all, the photos form visual witness to the unique life in Den Ilp as only Heyboer himself could see it, like one great work of art. The lion’s share of the photo production on Den Ilp, however, can be attributed to his five muses: Maria, Marike, Joke and in particular Lotti and Petra. For Anton Heyboer. Een leven als kunstwerk, a selection was made from hundreds of polaroid prints and thousands of black and white and colour negatives from the period 1973-2005. The majority of the selection was rescanned and stripped of technical imperfections – dust, scratches and moulds. For the first time, daily life in Den Ilp is brought out into the open in its entirety, photographed by whoever was holding a camera at the time. 13

Leo Duppen is director of the Kunstcentrum Haarlem. He has previously made books about Jan Montyn, Anton Heyboer and Piet van Heerden.

Aldo van Eyck has undoubtedly left his mark in Amsterdam. His extraordinary designs for playgrounds have touched the lives of whole generations of children growing up in the city. An important aspect of his designs is his effort to stimulate the imagination and ingenuity of children, which takes form in the minimalistic shapes of his playground equipment. In order to give the children of Amsterdam their own recognisable domain, Van Eyck developed a web of more than seven hundred playgrounds over the years, scattered all over the city. Only a few of them remain today,

and they must now share their locations with slides and swings. Many have disappeared completely and only 17 playgrounds are still intact. Aldo van Eyck, Seventeen Playgrounds is a handy guide in pocket format that uses 17 chapters to lead the reader through 17 playgrounds. Each chapter covers a specific aspect of the playground in question. An express decision was made for a current publication: the playgrounds are presented as they exist today.

Many dozens of faces of members of the House of Orange-Nassau adorn the walls of the Royal Palace Amsterdam. The oldest portrait from around 1550 shows Anna van Egmond, the first wife of Willem I ‘the Silent’. The most recent is the inauguration portrait of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima from 2013. The portraits from the Royal Collection provide an overview of the members of the Orange Dynasty through the years. From equestrian and formal portraits to family and children’s portraits, these are no spontaneous ‘snapshots’ but carefully thought-out scenes full of symbolism, in keeping with a long tradition of the royal portrait. The exhibition and the accompanying catalogue focus on the different portrait genres that can be seen in the Royal Palace Amsterdam, whereby the function and the corresponding representative and symbolic characteristics of the royal portrait hold a central position.

The Royal Palace Amsterdam is the official reception palace of His Majesty the King and is also open to visitors as much as possible. Visit the Palace and discover the unique history and the special interior of this imposing building in the heart of Amsterdam. You are more than welcome! www.paleisamsterdam.nl

The weathered head of an old farm labourer. The portrait of a proud Frisian horse. A still life in a rustic farmhouse. These are timeless subjects, captured in the past by photographers such as Adriaan Boer, Henri Berssenbrugge and Ed van der Elsken, and now by the likes of Bert Teunissen, Dirk Kome and Hans van der Meer. Famous names that have ventured to tackle this well-known topic: farming life in the Netherlands. From the end of the nineteenth century until today, many photographers have recorded images of life in the Dutch countryside. The most touching, compelling photos are depicted in Boeren. Kees ’t Hart searched for accompanying texts. More than eighty

photographers contribute to a visual story in the book, which can be linked to many meanings: the development of a national cultural identity, the filling of the landscape, the changes within a professional sector. There is progress and decline, hardness and romance. Rustic scenes are often linked with feelings of nostalgia: the longing for a home that no longer exists. However: farming life still exists. The almost cliché standard images of strong men in overalls, cows and sheep in misty meadows and farmsteads built of red brick are still permanent fixtures of the Dutch landscape. Boeren is a book to be cherished.

19

Wim van Sinderen is senior curator of the Fotomuseum Den Haag and conservator of the photography collection of the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag. Dirk Kome is a photographer and comes from Rockanje, where his father and brother still run a commercial farm. Kees ‘t Hart writes novels, poetry, essays and critiques. He also writes reviews for De Groene Amsterdammer.

Marjolein Loppies.

What would happen if people suddenly disappeared from the world? What would happen to everything we have built? How long would buildings remain standing before falling back into the hands of Mother Nature? Taking pictures of abandoned objects is almost like travelling through time; standing in the middle of a classroom with all its original furniture, including the teachers blackboard, while the last lesson took place more than 40 years ago. Or walking through a hospital where a drip still hangs, long past its expiration date. A nuclear power plant, silent and cold, with

peeling paint and asbestos floating through the air; abandoned because a new factory was built alongside the existing building. Or an abandoned farm with its pre-war interior still completely intact, including a basement with preserving jars filled with tomatoes, fruit and other indefinable things, saved for the event of outbreak of war. Sixty years later, gems from the past. Urbex photography poses questions about our consumer society. We build new things, but we ‘forget’ what we have already built.

21

Marjolein Loppies has been a photographer for over 30 years and in recent years has turned her focus to abandoned objects in locations such as Belgium, Italy, (East) Germany and Luxemburg; so-called urbex photography (urban exploration). Using digital techniques she transforms her photos into works of art depicting life ‘after people’.

When foster children turn eighteen, they become adults in the eyes of the law. Youth support and foster allowance cease and all kinds of things have to be arranged. The eighteenth birthday is thereby a significant moment in the lives of these young people and a good time to take a look back on their lives so far. 18 x 18 presents eighteen foster children on the verge of adulthood. Boys and girls with different experiences and perceptions tell freely of their lives until now. About their early childhood, why they entered foster

care, the positive things and the negative. In their private lives and in their contact with youth support. What is striking about these young people is their resilience and positive outlook on the future. Photographer Ton Hendriks captured images of them in their own surroundings. 18 x 18 provides a broad insight into the lives of foster children and is an interesting, unmissable source of information for other foster children, current and future foster parents and everyone who is professionally or voluntarily involved with foster families.

Photographer George Maas owns one of the almost 100,000 campers driving around the Netherlands. He therefore became curious about the interiors of other campers and in particular what inspires their owners. After all, they spend a substantial amount of money on a mobile home on wheels, which they then use for just a few weeks each year. He discovered that camper owners are clearly different to the owners of caravans. They are much more independent and original. Around sixty couples and sometimes entire families were photographed in their campers

for this book, in the Benelux, Germany or France, usually with the steering wheel visible so that it is clear to see that they are in a camper and not a caravan. The owners often tell their story, which creates an impression of the enormous diversity of all these people with one common hobby: the camper. The model and weight of the campers is noted. There is also a focus on areas where the campers congregate. Camperportret is a light-hearted, entertaining book for all camper owners and for those who are thinking of becoming one.

Out of the picture tells the story of the father of Simone Engelen who lost his job after twenty years of loyal service; a victim of a reorganisation. A fifty year-old left with frustrated feelings of futility and failure. To make peace with the past and to restore faith in his own self-esteem, he decided to take time away from everything that was important to him. Away from his home, his family, friends and business relations. Out of sight for a while. He went to Bali for two months in order to spend time in isolation to think and gain perspective. A time to become inspired and gather new energy.

During his time in Bali he kept a photo diary, parts of which are included in the book. Supplemented with e-mails to Simone and her photos of life continuing back home, Out of the picture has become a personal and emotional document in which her father searches for answers. Perhaps it will help other people, in a similar situation, to realise that there is more to life than work. ‘I believe that my father’s unusual sabbatical shows a combination of courage and love. My parents’ unconditional trust in each other and a strong belief that despite the setback - the will to survive will result in something positive.’

Simone Engelen (1988) graduated from the Royal Academy for Visual Arts in Den Haag and is currently following a master’s course at the AKV St. Joost in Breda. During her education she focuses on topics including the changing, often personal narrative identity.

20 years ago, Eindhoven seemed to shake on its foundations after Operatie Centurion at Philips and the bankruptcy of DAF. The city is now known as the most intelligent community of the world. Where it used to be famous for the light bulb, radios and TVs, it is now a pioneering force in technology and leading design. Old icons such as Philips and DAF have experienced a revival, new flag bearers like ASML, VDL and High Tech Campus Eindhoven have joined. Eindhoven has now become a role model in the way in which it arose like a phoenix from the ashes. It is with good reason that the Singularity University from Sillicon Valley chose Eindhoven as the location for its first branch outside the US.

Rob van Gijzel was mayor of Eindhoven from 2008 to 2016. For many he was the inspiring ambassador of this metamorphosis. In Een stad die de toekomst maakt (A city that makes the future) he presents his visions of these developments and makes national and international connections. He also philosophises about the Eindhoven of the future. What can the city do to stay ahead as innovator now that the changes in society are progressing even faster? In image and word, Een stad die de toekomst maakt sketches the route taken by a unique city and its unique (ex) mayor.

Hans Horsten (1955) is a journalist and publicist. He has worked for the Eindhovens Dagblad, Omroep Brabant, Trouw and was for a long time affiliated with the Volkskrant. He now has a Bureau for Journalistic Productions and Media Training in the Eindhoven region. Books from his hand include Het Gedroomde Brabant, for which he observed eight farming families over the space of two years, and Op Cel, an intriguing portrayal of life in Nieuw Vosseveld in Vught, the most secure prison in the Netherlands.

Five years ago a group of designers suggested that the possible significance of design for society was insufficiently identified. Design was associated with styling or beauty. Very few were aware of the possibilities design offered in identifying the problems in society and helping to solve them. The group decided to create a platform under the name What Design Can Do! in order to highlight the power of design as problem solver among both professionals and the wider public. The platform, centred around a two-day conference

Since then, hundreds of designs from all over the world have passed by, of which 31 have been brilliantly gathered together in this book. TBilingual publication with the last ten years’ work from Dutch visual artist Jan Mulder, created to accompany the poems ‘Die Ewigkeit’ and ‘Corona’ by Paul Celan. With a text from ex-curator of the Stedelijk Museum Jan Hein Sassen, who says of Mulder’s work: ‘A poetic translation in paint of the human condition, as written by the philosopher Octavio Paz, that is characterized in our culture by constantly being thrown back and forth between rationality and romance. At the same time you see the moving ferocity of New York, the Mediterranean colours of the Greek island of Paros and the clear light that shines through the trees of the Oudegracht in Utrecht: the three places that mark his life.’

Jan Mulder lives and works in Utrecht, New York and Greece. Jan Hein Sassen was curator of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam from 1988 to 2006.

The Big Book of Remembrance Quest through the Ritual Landscape Editorial team Gerritjan Deunk (samenstelling), Yvonne Lub, Ada Wille, Jutta Hinterleitner, Edward Timmerman and William Arfman • the ultimate book about the only certainty of life • more current than ever, now that death is a generally discussed topic and experienced on a more individual level • with an introduction by Herman Vuijsje

The Netherlands of today commemorates very differently than a century ago. The Ritual Landscape of being born, dying, commemorating and memories of loved ones will, when we are gone, once again be very different. People migrate and evaluate in line with major social shifts, from collective to individual and back again. The trusted Dutch cityscapes and green countryside are also rapidly evolving. A multiform editorial team was presented with the communal question: ‘How do we commemorate?’. How do we deal with the phenomenon of death and our dead? How do we grieve? How do we do this in relation to our faith, beliefs or intuition? Do we take the freedom to perform the ritual of grief, say farewell and come to terms with death in our own way? Join in this literal and

visual quest through the Ritual Landscape! Join in walking, looking, reading, doubting about the memorials of then, now and later. The wide, open field of vision runs from global forms of burial, cremation and remembrance to the more banal ‘how much does a funeral cost?’ and contemporary concepts with digital messages. The kaleidoscopic approach with numerous topics has been made widely accessible with a detailed table of contents and an extensive index, so that everyone can quickly find whatever interests them. Het Groot Gedenkboek (The Big Book of Remembrance) is a moving, serious set of guidelines and an ongoing reading book of a sensitive topic.

40

Gerritjan Deunk is a designer, writer and concept maker. Yvonne Lub develops projects on the boundary between visual arts, design and (landscape) architecture. Edward Timmerman is a landscape ecologist and works for landscape management Gelderland. Jutta Hinterleitner is an architect and involved with Architecture centre Makeblijde as coordinator. Ada Wille is a landscape architect specialising in (re)development plans for cemeteries, churchyards and crematorium grounds. William Arfman is a PhD student at the University of Tilburg. He is researching the ritual dynamics of contemporary collective memorials.

Dirk kok 404366

The Nederlands Centrum voor Volkscultuur en Immaterieel Erfgoed (Dutch Centre for Popular Culture and Immaterial Heritage) describes popular culture as ‘the traditions and rituals with which people identify in their daily lives’. ‘Popular culture is the culture you learn from your family, your roots.’ Popular culture has always played an important role in life in Staphorst and Dirk Kok has been presenting the results of this for more than twenty years. As such, he has now photographed and described over seventy topics - including ornaments, utensils, stories, textiles and poems. A small selection: the blanket chest, the christening hat, hand-made

clogs, the copper heart, the milk rack, the net, the wooden hat box, the biscuit shelf, garden trellises, weather vanes, the starfish as ubiquitous ornament, and singing in the church. The Staphorster will recognise these topics immediately, also because several of them are products of popular art. Yet many of the discussed topics are also well-known elsewhere in Overijssel and the Netherlands. In this sense, the book is a celebration of recognition for everyone or a wonderful introduction to things that were once taken for granted in everyday life, but are now slowly disappearing.

42

Dirk Kok was the manager of the museum farm in Staphorst from 1982 to 2012. He is also a co-founder of the local Historical Society. Other titles from his hand previously published by Lecturis are Aanzeggen. Rouw- en begrafenistradities in Staphorst and ’t Is alles kleuren, zilver, goud. Staphorst, versieren bij het leven.

“Mysterious, original and intriguing: Bosch could not have wished for a better comic biographer.” Ron Rijghard, NRC Handelsblad, Thursday 1 October 2015

“The robust, woodcut-like drawing style of Marcel Ruijters is perfect for bringing 15th century scenes to life.” Joost Pollmann, De Volkskrant, 7 November 2015

“... (that) Ruijters’ thorough research into his topics even raises new facts for the experts.” Wouter Adriaensen, Cutting Edge, 16 November 2015

“... a comic to make you lick your fingers.” De Boekenkrant, 15 December 2015

In Jheronimus, Ruijters brings all the rawness and beauty of the late Middle Ages magnificently to life. We follow the life of Jeroen Bosch and see how his works, often bizarre in our eyes, fall into place and form part of the perceptions of Bosch. A special publication for comic, art and particularly Jeroen Bosch-lovers.

Rob Overmeer Stadswachters

Stadswachters Guardians of the City

Guardians of the City

Foto omslag Huismeester Pieterskerk Photo cover Concierge Pieterskerk

The photo series Guardians of the City represents the story of the people who live and work behind the scenes of the city. The guardians of the city determine its shape. None of them realise that they have this power, as they’re continually forced to focus on their own passions, duties and quests for survival. Recording the personal stories of these anonymous people reveals the true identity of the city. Photographer and columnist Rob Overmeer worked on this series for a whole year as Leiden’s city photographer. A full-page spread, consisting of a photo and a column of some 300 words, was published in the Leidsch Dagblad every week. The whole series has been brought together in this book to form a gripping tale about the true soul of a city. Rob Overmeer (1971) is based in Leiden. He has a wide variety of publications, photo columns and advertising campaigns to his name.
