Inleiding De tijd was rijp om de schilder en graficus Jaap Schreurs (1913-1983) met een publicatie te eren. Een dergelijk proces vraagt gepaste afstand en gedegen studie, zeker wanneer het gaat over een kunstenaar wiens werk zo confronterend en onconven­ti­o­neel lijkt. Door middel van zijn artistieke nalatenschap verwerven we ook meer inzicht. Dat slaat niet alleen op de tijd waarin hij leeft, maar ook op dat wat zijn werk doet met de toeschouwer.

Het leven van Jaap Schreurs omspande twee verschrikkelijke wereldoorlogen en talrijke ideologische conflicten. Dat liet hem niet onberoerd. Het artistieke landschap in Nederland was niet bepaald rustig. Jaap zat ‘gevangen’ tussen de erfenis van de Haagsche School en de opkomst van de Cobrabeweging. Kunststromingen buitelden over elkaar heen en de strijd tussen abstracte kunst en het realisme leek meedogenloos. Schreurs ontkwam niet aan de politieke werkelijkheid, maar bleef

tijdens zijn artistieke loopbaan trouw aan het realisme.

Natuurlijk was hij zich bewust van wat er gebeurde.

De invloed van kunstenaars als Picasso, Modigliani en Morandi in zijn werk is daardoor onmiskenbaar, maar hij deed geen concessies aan zijn artistieke opvattingen.

Schreurs voelde niet de drang om hiervoor de barricades op te gaan. Hij vocht veldslagen in het atelier: in de kunstwerken kwamen zijn diepste gevoelens en overtuigingen aan de oppervlakte. Zij slaan, ruim dertig jaar na zijn overlijden, nog steeds in als een bom.

Een kunstenaar die bewust de zijlijn opzocht, zo kan Jaap Schreurs gekenschetst worden. Over zijn leven is eigenlijk maar betrekkelijk weinig bekend. Uit de verhalen van zijn tijdgenoten komt een aimabele, zorgzame persoonlijkheid te voorschijn, rustig, belezen, spiritueel, wars van dogmatisme, artistiek bevlogen en begaafd.

Hoewel hij al jong furore maakte en lovende kritieken in kranten verschenen, schuwde hij de openbaarheid.

Introduction The time has come to honour the painter and graphic artist Jaap Schreurs (1913-1983) with a publication. For such reflections to do an artist justice, we need sufficient distance and thorough study, particularly with a figure whose work is so confrontational and unconventional.

Through examining and contemplating Schreurs’ artistic legacy, we can gain insight, not only into the period in which he lived, but also into his work’s impact on contemporary viewers and into its relationship with changing cultural contexts.

His life spanned two terrible world wars and numerous ideological conflicts, none of which left him unmoved. Moreover, Schreurs’ career spanned a turbulent period in the Netherlands art world: he was caught between the legacy of the Hague School and the rise of the Cobra movement. Artistic styles collided, clashed, and overlapped; the central struggle between abstract art and realism was relentless.

He did not escape the political realities of his times, but as an artist he remained loyal to the realist tradition.

Of course, Schreurs was aware of the significance of abstract art movements, and he did not refuse to acknowledge them; the influence of artists such as Picasso, Modigliani and Morandi on his work is undeniable. Yet he did not compro­mise his artistic views. He defended realism through his work, but did not feel the urge to mount the barricades for it. Instead, he fought his battles in the studio: in Schreurs’ paintings his deepest feelings and beliefs surface. Thirty years after his death, they still strike the viewer with explosive force.

He can be characterised, above all, as an artist who deliberately stayed on the sidelines. Relatively little is known about his life, but those who were close to him describe an amiable and caring person, quiet, well-read, spiritually inspired, averse to dogmatism. Although his work attracted critical acclaim from the outset, he avoid-

Schreurs wilde geen erkenning of aandacht maar zocht onvermoeibaar naar de essentie van het schilderen, optimale expressie, zijn visie uitdragend op dat waar het in het leven om draaide: respect en aandacht voor de kwetsbaarheid van het menselijk bestaan. Ouderdom, mismaaktheid, verdriet, verlatenheid, wanhoop, haat en liefde vormen steeds terugkerende thema’s. Schreurs vermeed het vrijblijvende, aangename plaatjes te maken. Liever hield hij ons de spiegel voor waar we niet graag in willen kijken.

Het werk van Jaap Schreurs lijkt daardoor confronterend, hard, bijna schaamteloos. Maar het doet wat kunst moet doen: het functioneert als een katalysator die de mens tot inzicht, bezinning en reflectie brengt. De

This reclusive nature was connected to Schreurs’ tireless search for the essential power of painting, the optimal expression of his view of life. The central demand of that view is that we respect and have compassion for the vulnerability of human existence. Old age, deformity, sorrow, desolation, despair, hate and love are recurring themes in his art: Schreurs confronts the viewer with the harsh reality of existence. As a result, many of Schreurs’ works at first sight seem confrontational, hard, or even cruel. Yet they are doing exactly what art should do: they facilitate and encourage under­standing, contemplation and reflection. Schreurs holds a mirror up to us; and while we may not necessarily like what we see

Bij zijn overlijden liet Schreurs een groot aantal schilderijen (sommige van monumentale afmetingen), gouaches, tekeningen en etsen na. Een kring van familie en vrienden stelde zich ten doel dit werk voor het nageslacht te bewaren en toegankelijk te maken. Het oeuvre werd geïnventariseerd en is via de website www. jaapschreurs.nl te bekijken. De bijzondere waarde van de kunstuitingen werd ook door diverse musea onderkend.

Een aantal bescheiden presentaties maakte het werk bij een select publiek bekend.

Het is niet onze bedoeling een traditioneel kunstboek te presenteren. Het veelzijdige werk en de daarin opgesloten diepere lagen van beleving vragen een onconventionele behandeling. Daarom worden in deze publicatie meerdere aspecten van Schreurs’ oeuvre belicht.

Upon his death Schreurs left behind many paintings some of monumental dimensions - as well as gouaches, drawings and etchings. Relatives and friends have made it their object to preserve this oeuvre for posterity, and make it widely access­ible. The work has been catalogued and can be seen at www.jaapschreurs.com. The distinctive value of his art has been recognised by several museums, and a number of modest exhibitions have made his work known to a select audience.

It was not our intention to create a traditional art book; instead, we have aimed to present a broader understanding of Schreurs’ art, and to cover various aspects of his oeuvre. We felt that the versatility of his work, and its profound experiential and exist­ential depth demanded an unconventional treatment.

II STIJLONTWIKKELING Jaap Schreurs schilderde aanvankelijk met olieverf op doek, maar later vooral met acrylverf op hardboard. Naast schilderijen, gouaches en tekeningen maakte hij ook etsen. Hij experimenteerde graag met technieken en nieuwe materialen.

Zijn werken zijn slechts bij uitzondering gesigneerd en gedateerd. Op grond van de stijlontwikkeling is zijn oeuvre echter globaal in te delen in drie periodes. Elke periode heeft een eigen karakter, maar dat wil niet zeggen dat alle werken binnen een tijdvak een uniform geheel vormen.

Naast de ‘hoofdstroming’ komen ook andere richtingen voor.

De meeste titels van Schreurs’ werken zijn pas na zijn overlijden door anderen bedacht, omdat niet bekend was welke titels hij zelf had willen geven.

1. De schilderijen uit de periode 1930-1950 De figuren in het vroege schilderwerk (1930-1950) van Jaap Schreurs zijn plastisch uitgevoerd, met veel aandacht voor schaduwwerkingen. Zij zijn naturalistisch of een niet al te verre afgeleide daarvan en het lijkt alsof zij zijn ingebed in de wollige achtergrond. Het kleurpalet is opgebouwd uit overwegend donkere tinten, met een sterke voorkeur voor paars, bruin, rood en ook wel groen. In zijn begintijd heeft Schreurs naast figuurstudies en portretten (een fraai voorbeeld is het Portret van Selma (p. 15), relatief veel stillevens, bloemstukken, landschappen en stads-, of dorpsgezichten geschilderd. Toch ligt de kiem van zijn bewogen­heid voor de mens al in het vroege werk besloten. Voorbeelden hiervan zijn Drie vrouwen (p. 17), “Desespereert niet” (p. 81) en Onderweg (p. 16). Belangrijk is natuurlijk het eerder genoemde schilderij van de Dobbelaars onder het Kruis (p. 49).

II PAINTING STYLE At the outset, Jaap Schreurs painted in oils on canvas.

Later, he preferred to paint in acrylics on hardboard. He also produced drawings, etchings and gouaches. He liked experimenting with techniques and (at that time) new materials.

His works are only rarely signed and dated. However the developments over the years in his painting style allow a division of his oeuvre in roughly three periods. Each period has its own characteristics, although not all works belonging to one period are of the same type. In each period there is a main trend, but within each there are variations.

Schreurs has titled only a small number of his works.

Most of the titles mentioned in the text that follows, are chosen by others.

1. The paintings of the period 1930-1950 In Jaap Schreurs’ early paintings (1930-1950), the figures are three-dimensional with careful attention to light and shade. They are either naturalistic or nearly so, and the figures appear embedded in a woolly background. The colouring consists mainly of dark shades, mostly purple, brown, red and sometimes green. During this period Schreurs painted not only figures and portraits (a fine example is Portrait of Selma; p. 15). He also painted many still-lives, flowerpieces, landscapes and town- and village-scenes. Still, the origin of his emotional involvement with the human figure is already visible in the early paintings. Examples of this are Three Women (p. 17), “Desespereert niet” (Despair Not; p. 81), and On the Way (p. 16). An important work is of course the previously mentioned Dice Players Under the Cross (p. 49).

Selma was jarenlang de vriendin van Schreurs. Zij was Joods en is in de oorlog gedeporteerd en omgekomen in een concentratiekamp.

For many years, Selma was Schreurs’s girlfriend. She was Jewish and during the war she perished in a concentration camp.

3. De schilderijen uit de periode 1965-1983 In de laatste fase wordt alles ondergeschikt gemaakt aan de emotionele lading. Glad geschilderd en met sombere kleuren in verschillende nuances, komen de werken op je af.

De zeggingskracht van de figuren is overweldigend, of zij het nu uitgillen in wanhoop of juist berusten in hun lot.

Of zij nu eenzaam en afgeleefd zijn, of niets beters te doen hebben dan het afwachten van betere tijden, zij tonen dit zonder veel omhaal.

Er is een onderscheid tussen verhalende voorstellingen die in een driedimensionale omgeving gesitueerd zijn, zoals Schamele schuilplaats (p. 101), en personages die voor een ondergeschikte achtergrond geplaatst zijn, zoals Vrouw met rode kan (p. 24). Die achtergrond is vaak een gekleurd vlak, opgebouwd uit honderden, duizenden toetsjes. Door onbelangrijke voorwerpen of onderdelen een contrasterende kleur te geven, wordt hieraan een nieuwe waarde toegekend. Het paarse blaadje, dat in In verbondenheid op weg (p. 97)

3. The paintings of the period 1965-1983 In the last period in Schreurs’ work, everything is subordinate to its emotional significance. The paintings seem to bear down on you. The paint is applied smoothly and in different nuances of sombre colours. The eloquence of the figures is overwhelming, whether they are screaming with despair or resigning themselves to their fate. Whether they are lonely and decrepit, or have no other choice than to await better times, they show it without much ado.

There is a difference between narrative images situated in a three-dimensional environment, such as Miserable Shelter (p.

101), and figures placed before a neutral background, such as Woman With a Red Jug (p. 24). In the latter cases, the background is often coloured and composed of thousands of small strokes. Sometimes small (and at first sight unimpor­ tant) objects and components are given their own particular value by having been painted in a contrasting colour. In Togetherness (p. 97), the purple leaf, blown ahead of the two

voor de twee figuren is uitgewaaid, staat in contrast met de gedempte grijs-groene tinten waarin de rest van de voorstelling is uitgevoerd.

De betekenis van het afgebeelde wordt soms ook versterkt door het enorme formaat van het schilderij. De voeten (p. 52-53), Ten hemel schreiend (p. 54-55) en nog een aantal andere werken hebben afmetingen die de twee meter overschrijden. Niet alle werken uit deze periode zijn echter in zwaarmoedige kleuren geschilderd. De gouden vogel (p. 69) en Het stille feest (p. 70-71), Schreurs’ laatste schilderijen, stralen in een oranje gloed. Maar ook in bijvoorbeeld de Vrouw met rode kan (p. 24) uit 1981 en Peinzende vrouw (p. 63) voeren heldere kleuren de boventoon. Andere kenmerkende schilderijen uit deze periode zijn: Drie generaties (p. 23), Hereniging (p. 26), Het gezin (p. 43), Echtpaar met half been (p. 66-67), Job (p.

51), Het bejaardentehuis (p. 91), Verlatenheid (p. 107), Gezin op landweg (p. 109), De stamhouder (p. 113), Twee mensen en een boom (p.

95), Vrouw met kinderwagen (p. 117), “Agneta als ze 80 is” (p. 28), Troosteloos toekomstbeeld (p. 25) en Het mislukte huwelijk (p. 45).

figures, contrasts with the subdued greyish green shades of the other parts of the painting.

In some paintings, the meaning of what is represented is reinforced by the enor­mous size of the painting. The Feet (p.

52-53), Crying to Heaven (p. 54-55) and a number of other paintings exceed two metres on each side.

However not all works of this period are painted in melancholic colours. Schreurs’ last paintings, The Golden Bird (p.

69) and Silent Celebration (p. 70-71), radiate an orange glow.

There are some more paintings in which bright colours dominate, for example in Woman With a Red Jug (p. 24), dated 1981, and in Pensive Woman (p. 63).

5. De tekeningen Schreurs’ tekeningen zijn onderling zeer verschillend van aard. In veel gevallen zijn het schetsen of voorstudies voor de schilderijen. Ook zijn er veel modelstudies op papier.

De duidelijke contouren uit het schilderwerk zijn terug te vinden in zijn tekentechniek.

Voorbeelden van tekeningen uit Schreurs’eerste periode zijn: Man met snor en hoed (p. 34), Zittende naakte man (p. 35) en Man met verzakte mond (p. 35).

5. The Drawings Schreurs’ drawings are remarkably different from each other. Most of them are sketches or preliminary studies for his paintings. There are also many life studies on paper. The clear contours of his paintings are also found in his drawing technique.

Examples of drawings dating from Schreurs’ first period are Man With Moustache and Hat (p. 34), Nude Man Sitting Down (p. 35), and Man With Distorted Mouth (p. 35). The drawings Hairs Standing on End (p. 34) and A Lined Face (p. 35) are representative for his work during the last period.

2. Religieuze thema’s Ook religieuze onderwerpen komen vaak voor, al zijn zij in het late werk soms niet op het eerste gezicht als zodanig te herkennen omdat zij vertaald zijn in een universele beeldentaal. Uit Schreurs’ vroege periode stammen de tekeningen Gekruisigde rover (p. 47), De achterkant van het Kruis (p. 47), de gouache Kruisiging (p. 48) en de schilderijen Dobbelaars onder het Kruis (p. 49) en “Desespereert niet” (p. 81).

Op de achterkant van dit laatste schilderij is door Schreurs met grote hoofdletters geschreven “MOTTO DESESPEREERT NIET”. Hoewel het schilderij in 1946 is gedateerd, maakt dit opschrift het waarschijnlijk dat het tijdens de oorlogsjaren is ontstaan, want deze woorden verwijzen naar het bekende motto van Jan Pieterszoon Coen (15871629). Tijdens de Duitse bezetting was dit motto bijzonder populair omdat Koningin Wilhelmina het in mei 1940 had geciteerd in haar eerste radiotoespraak vanuit Londen.

Voorbeelden van religieuze thema’s uit Schreurs’ middenperiode zijn de gouaches Priester (p. 50) en Doornenkroon (p. 77). Uit het laatste jaar van Schreurs’ leven stammen een aantal voorstudies voor een schilderij Aan de voeten van het Kruis

2. Religious themes There are also many works with religious themes. At first sight, some works from the latest period are difficult to recognise as such, because the artist has translated them into a universal symbolic language.

The drawings Crucified Criminal (p. 47) and Behind the Cross (p. 47), the gouache Crucifixion (p. 48), and the paintings Dice Players Under the Cross (p. 49) and “Desespereert niet” (p. 81) all belong to Schreurs’ early period (1930-1950).

The painting “Desespereert niet” (p. 81) shows a face striking most visitors as that of Christ. Schreurs handwrote in large capitals “MOTTO: DESESPEREERT NIET” (“Despair Not” in Old Dutch) on the reverse side of the painting. These words allude to the motto of the famous belligerent Governor General J. P. Coen (1587-1629) who played a major part in Dutch history. Ever since the 17th century, this motto has been well-known, almost a proverb. In WW2 German-occupied Netherlands, this motto gained even more meaningfulness for the Dutch as it was used by Queen Wilhelmina in her radio speech to the Dutch people, explaining her departure to London in May 1940. Several Dutch authors 46

(p. 103). Door zijn plotselinge dood is het schilderij nooit voltooid, maar de voorstudies laten zien dat Schreurs veertig jaar na zijn Dobbelaars onder het Kruis (p. 49; in Rijksbezit) nog steeds gefascineerd was door het thema van de gebeurtenissen aan de voeten van de gekruisigde Christus. Ze laten ook zien hoe hij in de loop van zijn ontwikkeling steeds meer de innerlijke kant van de ultieme Godverlatenheid symbolisch is gaan weergeven.

Uit het schilderij De voeten (p. 52-53) valt de culminatie van het menselijk lijden af te lezen. Door de lijdende voeten in de context van een ‘doornenkroon’ van prikkeldraad te plaatsen, heeft Schreurs een nieuw symbool geschapen.

Een ander steeds weerkerend religieus motief is de worsteling met God: de woedende schreeuw om gerechtigheid, zoals in Job (p. 51), of de wanhopige roep om hulp. Ook van dit motief heeft Schreurs jarenlang talrijke voorstudies gemaakt, die uiteindelijk leidden tot zijn grote Ten hemel schreiend van 240 x 270 cm (p. 54-55). Uitgemergelde mensen kijken naar een donkere hemel, schreeuwen hun ellende uit, een vrouw houdt haar baby omhoog. De hemel reageert niet. Schreurs zei zelf eens hierover: “ze kijken de verkeerde kant uit, wat ze zoeken komt niet van boven”.

also used it as the title of a book or a poem in the WW2 years. Although Schreurs’ painting is dated 1946, he probably started painting it during the war when he had to go into hiding because he refused to sign a statement, which the Nazi’s demanded of every artist.

Examples of religious themes dating from Schreurs’ second period (1950-1965) are the gouaches Priest (p. 50) and Crown of Thorns (p. 77).

Preliminary studies for a painting At the Feet of the Cross (p.

103) date from the last year of Schreurs’ life. His sudden death prevented him to finish it as a final painting, but its preliminary studies show that, forty years after his Dice Players Under the Cross (p. 49; owned by the Dutch State), he was still fascinated by the religious symbolism of what happened at the feet of the crucified Christ. These same preliminary studies also show how, in the course of his development, he increasingly represented the hidden aspects of ultimate godforsakenness in a symbolic way.

The height of human suffering is presented in the painting The Feet (p. 52-53). By locating the suffering feet in the context of a ‘crown of thorns’ of barbed wire, Schreurs has

created a new symbol. Perhaps his relationship with Selma (p. 15) contributed to his representing ultimate suffering as the suffering of feet (for journey) and ultimate cruelty as barbed wire (for concentration camp)?

Another recurring religious theme is the human wrestling with God: the furious cry for justice, such as in Hiob (p. 51), or the desperate call for help. Schreurs has also made numerous preliminary studies of this theme, which eventually led to his large Crying to Heaven (p. 54-55) (240 x 270 cm). Emaciated people look upwards at a dark sky, crying out in their misery, a woman holds her baby up. The sky is not responding. Schreurs himself said once about this painting “They are looking in the wrong direction, what they are searching doesn’t come from above.”

Misdeelde en mismaakte mensen Zowel uit het vroege als uit het latere werk spreekt een grote betrokkenheid met de onderkant van de samenleving, de ‘geboren verliezers’, zoals doodarme mensen, verminkte oorlogsslachtoffers, demente bejaarden, troosteloze gezinnen, zichzelf of elkaar hatende mensen. Schreurs ontwikkelde zich tijdens de grote economische crisis van de jaren dertig en de tweede wereldoorlog. De effecten van de toen heersende grote armoede en de slechte sociale voorzieningen waren overal op straat te zien, dus hij moet voortdurend geconfronteerd zijn geweest met lijdende, verwaarloosde en wanhopige mensen.

Het heeft er alle schijn van dat deze lichamelijke deformaties een weerspiegeling zijn van hun mentale gesteldheid. Andere voorbeelden hiervan zijn Echtpaar met verminkte ledematen (p. 65) en Het mislukte huwelijk (p. 45).

In zijn latere werk verplaatst hij de uitbeelding van de buitenkant naar binnen. In toenemende mate deformeert hij zijn figuren om hun innerlijke spanningen weer te geven.

In sommige werken is het lichaam niet meer dan een optelsom der delen. De symmetrie is verdwenen. Ogen, armen en benen houden geen verband meer met elkaar. Niet meer dan toevallig behoren zij tot hetzelfde lichaam, samengebracht door het noodlot.

De man in Het echtpaar met half been (p. 66-67) bijvoorbeeld, is dan ook niet alleen vanwege de lengte van zijn onvolgroeide ledemaat benadeeld. De ene arm is korter dan de

Dit zichtbaar maken van de geestelijke gesteldheid door de ‘ver-uiterlijking’ van het innerlijke, door het binnenste naar buiten te keren, heeft Schreurs zelf eens, na lang aandringen door een bezoeker, als ‘psychologisch realisme’ betiteld. Zijn bezoeker moest zo lang aandringen omdat Jaap Schreurs altijd weigerde antwoord te geven op dergelijke vragen. Hij voelde er niets voor bij een bepaalde kunststroming ondergebracht te worden. Uiteraard erkende hij volmondig dat zijn werk tot de twintigste-eeuwse kunst behoorde en dat dit ook te zien was, maar hij wilde nadrukkelijk zijn eigen weg gaan en zijn eigen stijl ontwikkelen.

5. The Theme of the Deprived and Deformed Both the early and the later works express an intense involvement with the underside of society; with the ‘losers’, the poverty-stricken, the demented, the crippled, the dejected, and people hating themselves or each other. We must remember Schreurs’ formative years were during the depression of the thirties and the Second World War. At those times there was a lot of poverty and no social security.

He must have been confronted by many suffering, neglected and desperate people.

In his later paintings, Schreurs shifts the portrayal of his characters from the outside to the inside. He increasingly deforms his figures in order to depict their inner anxieties.

In some works the body is no more than a sum of separated parts. Symmetry has gone. Eyes, arms and legs are malformed. The fact that they belong to the same body is purely coincidental, brought about by fate. In Couple With Missing Limb (p. 66-67) the husband is not only handicapp­ed because of the length of his stunted leg. His one arm is shorter than the other. He has a random number of fingers. His right eye is missing. The hand of the wife’s extended arm has only 64

four fingers, her other arm is miss­ing. In keeping with other works of Schreurs, both have birdlike legs attach­ ed to their hips. Their feet resemble chicken legs because of their high insteps and three to four toes. It looks as if these physical problems reflect their mental condition.

Some other examples are Couple With Mutilated Limbs (p. 65) and The Failed Marriage (p. 45).

Many other disabilities are portrayed implicitly; rather as symbols of impotence than as ‘existing’ deformities. They are meant to visualise the mental condition of the subject by ‘externalising’ his or her innermost feelings. The artist thus turns ‘the inside out’.

Often visitors asked how Schreurs would call this way of visualising the inner constitution. He always refused to give an answer because he fiercely resisted any effort to have his work ‘fitted into some standard art category’. Of course he admitted unhesitatingly that his work belonged to 20th century art and that this was something that could be observed.

However, he emphatically wanted to go his own way and develop his own style. Once a visitor insisted so forcefully, that he eventually gave in and hesitatingly termed it ‘psychological realism’.

6. Het thema van de ‘vervulde stilte’ Aan het eind van zijn leven zocht Jaap Schreurs naar iets wat hij ‘het licht van een vervulde stilte’ noemde. Zijn laatste twee werken, De gouden vogel (p. 69) en het onvoltooi­de Stille feest (p. 70-71) worden beide gekenmerkt door een gulden gloed. Op het eerstgenoemde werk contrasteert de stralende vogel met de zacht belichte, in zichzelf gekeerde gezichten van drie in het zwart geklede mensen. Het strijklicht, dat van linksboven komt, roept een geheimzinnige sfeer op.

Twee kinderen, waarvan er een de vogel ophoudt, hebben zich vóór het schijnsel opgesteld.

Ook de figuren van Het stille feest (p. 70-71) gaan allen in het zwart gekleed. Hun houdingen zijn echter veel minder statisch en zij worden omstraald door een glanzend licht.

Het is bijna wat Schreurs bedoeld moet hebben. Op de dag dat hij besefte hoe hij het schilderij volgens het concept van de vervulde stilte zou kunnen voltooien, stierf Jaap Schreurs aan een hartstilstand. In een telefoongesprek op die laatste avond van zijn leven zei hij: “Nu weet ik hoe ik de vervulde stilte moet schilderen. Dit wordt een keerpunt in mijn schildersleven!”

6. The Theme of ‘fulfilled silence’ At the end of his life Jaap Schreurs wanted to paint something he called ‘the light of a fulfilled silence’. His last two works The Golden Bird (p. 69) and the unfinished Silent Celebration (p. 70-71) are both characterised by a golden glow. In the first one, the radiant bird contrasts with the soft light on the introverted faces of three people in black clothes.

The light that is stroking their faces comes from top left and creates a mysterious atmosphere. Two children are positioned in the foreground. One of them holds a bird in the light’s full beam. The figures in Silent Celebration (p. 70-71) are also dressed in black. However, their postures are much less static and they are illuminated by a glowing light. It must be close to what Schreurs meant by ‘fulfilled silence’. On the day that he realised how he could express his concept of fulfilled silence in art, he died of a cardiac arrest.

During a telephone conversation on that last evening of his life he said, “Now I know how to paint the fulfilled silence! This will be a turning point in my life as a painter!”

je ook met één oog een heleboel ruimtelijke aanwijzingen kunt opmerken: het lineaire perspectief (parallelle lijnen die elkaar schijnen te naderen naarmate ze dichter bij de horizon komen), schaduwen, elkaar overlappende vlakken, het geleidelijke verloop in afstand en structuur. Als gevolg hiervan is in het werk van Schreurs te zien dat hierin toch wel een bepaalde ruimtelijkheid verschijnt. In het schilderij Het bejaardentehuis (p. 91) is deze ruimtelijkheid te danken aan het modelleren van de personages en aan de manier waarop zij elkaar overlappen doordat zij voor en achter elkaar geplaatst zijn. In sommige andere schilderijen wordt de ruimte nog beter aangegeven door het verschil in afmetingen en hun plaatsing als functie van hun onderlinge afstand, zoals bij voorbeeld in Verlatenheid (p. 107).

Het feit dat in zijn laatste schilderij De gouden vogel (p. 69) de personages frontaal zijn geplaatst, laat echter wel zien dat het uitbeelden van ruimte­lijkheid niet automatisch voortvloeit uit zijn gezichtsvermogen, maar berust op een vrije keuze van de kunstenaar.

Er is nog iets merkwaardigs aan de hand met deze ‘ruimtelijke’ werken van Schreurs. Een heel aantal toeschouwers heeft gemerkt dat ze daar ineens veel meer diepte in zien als

In some other paintings, space is shown even better by the difference in size and by the positioning of the characters in relation to their distance to each other, as in Desolation (p. 107).

However, in The Golden Bird (p. 69), the last painting Schreurs finished before his sudden death, he again positioned his figures in a frontal surface. This indicates that the representation of space does not follow automatically from the artist’s visual faculties, but is based on his own free decision.

Quite a few onlookers have observed that they suddenly see much more depth and relief in Schreurs’ ‘spatial’ paint­ings if they look at them while keeping one eye closed.

This phenomenon raises some interesting questions.

What could possibly cause this effect? Would looking with one eye at the pictures in this book have the same effect?

Ze zijn plat, ze zijn van papier, de kleuren zijn ook nooit honderd procent dezelfde. Probeer het eens, lezer!

Psychologische gevolgen van monoculair gezichtsvermogen Het bewustzijn van zijn eigen visuele handicap maakt dat een schilder spontaan grote aandacht heeft voor ogen. Bij Schreurs uit zich dat door een veel te grote uitbeelding van de oogbollen: de naturalistische portretten uit zijn jeugd, bijvoorbeeld de tekening Man met verzakte mond (p. 35) en het schilderij Portret van Selma (p. 15), worden gevolgd door werken waarin de ogen sterk vergroot worden, bijvoorbeeld Ongehoorde roep (p. 21), Johannes de Doper (p. 83), Doornenkroon (p. 77), De grijze jongen (p. 79) en Meisje (p. 73).

Omdat éénogigheid bovendien een asymmetrische oogafwijking is, zal een schilder geneigd zijn om in zijn werk verschillen tussen twee ogen te benadrukken en te overdrijven.

Deze neiging is bij Schreurs ook op te merken, bijvoorbeeld in Vrouw met hand onder haar kin (p. 75) en Job (p. 51).

After all, pictures are never quite identical to original paintings. They are flat, they are on paper, and the colours are often slightly different. Maybe the readers of this book feel like trying it out?

Psychological consequences of monocular vision The awareness of his own visual disability tends to direct the attention of a painter spontaneously to the eyes of his figures. In Schreurs’ work this effect may be observed in the enlarged eyes. The naturalistic portraits of his early work, for example in his drawing Man With Distorted Mouth (p. 35) and his painting Portrait of Selma (p. 15), were followed up by paintings of figures with very large eyes, such as Unheard Cry (p. 21), John the Baptist (p. 83), Crown of Thorns (p. 77), The Grey Boy (p. 79) and Girl (p. 73).

Moreover, as it is also an asymmetrical eye disease, a painter will also tend to emphasise and exaggerate differences between the eyes of his figures. In Schreurs’ work this can also be observed, for example in his Woman With Her Hand Under Her Chin (p. 75) and Hiob (p. 51).
