De kunst van de Engelse schilder Francis Bacon fascineert zijn publiek al meer dan zestig jaar. Francis Bacon (Dublin 1909-1992 Madrid) was geobsedeerd door de dramatiek en kwetsbaarheid van het menselijk bestaan. De uitdaging die hij zich stelde, was het zoeken naar nieuwe mogelijkheden om de menselijke figuur zo realistisch, maar ook zo s­ uggestief mogelijk te verbeelden. De oplossing vond hij in het zodanig vervormen van zijn onderwerpen dat hij de vitaliteit van vlees en bloed van zijn model in verf kon vangen en op het doek tot leven brengen. Bacon streefde ernaar om zijn portretten, hoe onconventioneel ook op­­gebouwd, toch over­tuigend en herkenbaar te laten overkomen.

Zijn modellen vond hij – behalve in het echte leven – in de kunst, in foto’s van voetballers, boksers, wilde dieren, in medische boeken, in de foto­series van de menselijke figuur in beweging van Eadweard M ­ uybridge en in de films van Eisen­­stein en Buñuel. Het ging hem steeds om de scherpte en directheid in de weergave van de figuur.

Het grafisch werk van Francis Bacon is gebaseerd op een door hem zelf ge­­ maak­te selectie van 35 schilderijen uit de periode 1965-1991. Er zijn in totaal 9 etsen/aquatinten, 21 litho’s en 6 offset prenten gedrukt; het druk­­proces is steeds onder supervisie van de kunstenaar uitgevoerd. De prenten van Bacon ontstonden uit opdrachten voor boekillustraties, als speciale uitgaven bij tentoonstellingen, maar ook als zelfstandige uitgaven omdat zijn schilderijen al vroeg onbereikbaar waren voor zijn publiek wegens de hoge verkoopprijzen.

The art of the English painter Francis ­Bacon has been enthralling his public for over sixty years. Francis Bacon (­Dublin 1909-1992 Madrid) was obsessed with the drama and fragility of human existence. He set himself the challenge of seeking new possibilities in depicting the human figure as realistically, but also as evocatively as possible. He found the solution in deforming his subjects to such an extent that the vitality of flesh and blood could be captured in paint and brought to life on canvas. Bacon strove for his portraits to come across as con­ vincing and recognisable, despite their unconventional composition.

Next to real life, he found his models in art, photos of football players, boxers, wild animals, medical textbooks, ­Eadweard Muybridge’s photo series of the human figure in motion and the films of Eisenstein and Buñuel. For him the depic­tion of the figure was about sharp­­ ness and directness.

Francis Bacon’s graphic work is based on a personal selection of 35 paintings from the period 1965-1991. In total 9 etchings/aquatints, 21 lithographs and 6 offset prints were printed with the process always carried out under the artist’s supervision. Bacon’s prints arose from commissions for book illustrations

De tentoonstelling in Het Noordbrabants Museum bevat uitmuntende exemplaren uit het grafisch oeuvre van Francis Bacon. Bij de selectie daarvan kregen wij de genereuze medewerking van Bruno Sabatier, als zakelijk vertegenwoordiger en galerist van Francis Bacon een kenner bij uitstek van diens werk. Wij hebben zijn betrokkenheid en advies zeer op prijs gesteld.

Dat deze uitzonderlijke expositie evenwel gerealiseerd kon worden, danken wij geheel en al aan de inspanningen van Paul van Rensch en de steun van diens Renschdael Art Foundation. Het Noordbrabants Museum en de Renschdael Art Foundation zijn in 2011 een samenwerkingsverband aangegaan om jaarlijks aandacht te besteden aan het werk van een belangwekkende moderne buitenlandse kunstenaar. In 2013 toonden wij samen met groot succes de indrukwekkende figuurstukken van Lita Cabellut. Met de grafische meesterwerken van Francis Bacon hopen wij op eenzelfde respons van onze bezoekers. Het Noordbrabants Museum is de Renschdael Art Foundation dan ook bijzonder erkentelijk voor deze exclusieve mogelijkheid om het grafische oeuvre van Francis Bacon in Nederland te kunnen tonen.

The exhibition in Het Noordbrabants Museum contains outstanding examples of the graphic oeuvre of Francis Bacon.

During the selection we benefited from the generous collaboration of Bruno Sabatier who, as Francis Bacon’s business agent and art dealer, has become a great authority on his work. We enormously appreciate his involvement and advice.

Na aanvankelijk reserves te hebben gehad ten aanzien van de productie van werk in oplage, ging Francis Bacon in de jaren zeventig toch zelf etsen. Aan dit eerste portret werkte hij achttien maanden, wat ongewoon lang is. Afgebeeld is Peter Beard, een fotograaf die Bacon in 1965 in Londen leerde kennen. De aanleiding was de presentatie van Beards boek ‘The End of the Game’ waarin de afslachting van olifanten in Afrika werd gedocumenteerd. Beard nam luchtfoto’s, onder meer van liggende olifanten met slap hangend vel waar het leven al een tijd uit was verdwenen. De wrede schoonheid correspondeert met die van Bacons werk.

Bacon wees meermaals op de paradox dat, wil een figuur in een kunstwerk echt overkomen, hij niet te realistisch geschilderd moet zijn en zeker niet illustratief.

Voor hem kwam een gezicht in een kunstwerk tot leven door het te vervormen en verminken. In deze ets schuift een gearceerd roze vlak voor delen van het gezicht.

Een witte cirkel geeft de indruk dat er een glas op het werk heeft gestaan.

Bacons vervormingen hebben tot vele psychologische interpretaties van zijn werk en zijn mensbeeld geleid. Bacon zelf echter was daar terughoudend in en hield de boot doorgaans af als het om duiding ging. Hij zag het werk eerder in formele termen en keek als kunstenaar wat nodig was om een portret levendig en echt te maken. Vervorming van de realiteit hoorde daarbij. Hij parafraseerde in dit verband Oscar Wilde toen hij zei: ‘You have to kill what you love.’

In the 1970s, after having reservations about producing work in editions, Bacon began making his own etchings. He worked for eighteen months on this first portrait, which is an unusually long time.

Peter Beard is depicted, a photographer whom Bacon met in London in 1965. The occasion was the presentation of Beard’s book ‘The End of the Game’, which documents the slaughter of elephants in Africa. Beard had taken aerial photos, including those of elephants with slack hanging skin some time after death. This cruel beauty has echoes in Bacon’s work.

Bacon repeatedly referred to the paradox involved in conveying a real figure in an artwork; it must not be painted realistically and definitely not illustratively. For him, a face in an artwork

came to life through deformation and mutilation. In this etching a crosshatched pink area slips before parts of the face.

A white circle creates the impression that a wet glass had been placed on the work.

Bacon’s deformations have given rise to many psychological interpretations of his work and portrayal of humanity. However Bacon himself was reticent on the subject and was generally non-committal when pressed for explanation. He saw the works more in formal terms and, as an artist, sought what was necessary to make a portrait vivid and real. Deforming reality was part of that. In this regard he paraphrased Oscar Wilde when he said, ‘You have to kill what you love’.

Michael Leiris (1901-1990) was een schrijver en een belangrijke intellectuele vriend van Bacon in Parijs. Hij werd in 1976 in een schilderij door Bacon vastgelegd, wat de basis vormde voor deze ets. Voor het gezicht van Leiris is een raster van dunne ‘gekamde’ kleurlijnen te zien in blauw, groen en roze. De structuur ervan lijkt op die van een vingerafdruk. De kleuren vormen een laag apart die als het ware voor het eigenlijke portret is geschoven en het geheel extra dynamiek geeft en ook geheimzinnig maakt. De ets verschilt hierin van het schilderij dat tot voorbeeld diende. Het portret als geheel heeft een uitstraling van devotie.

Leiris was lid van de Surrealistische beweging in Parijs. Weliswaar werd Bacon niet graag een Surrealist genoemd, maar de invloeden van de beweging heeft hij duidelijk geabsorbeerd, zoals blijkt in de ongerijmde of onbewuste figuratie die in zijn voorstellingen opduikt of, in dit specifieke portret, in de interesse in etnologische maskers. Het feit dat Leiris antropoloog was kan mede een rol hebben gespeeld in Bacons vormkeuzes. Leiris publiceerde in 1983 een monografie over Francis Bacon, “Face et profil”, en vertaalde de beroemde interviews met Bacon van de Engelse criticus David Sylvester in het Frans.

Michael Leiris (1901-1990) was a writer and an important intellectual friend of Bacon in Paris. In 1976 he was portrayed in a painting by Bacon, which formed the basis for this etching. A grid of thin, ‘combed’, coloured lines in blue, green and pink floats before his face. Its structure appears similar to that of a fingerprint. The colours form a separate layer that has, as it were, been pushed in front of the portrait, which adds an extra dynamic and mystery to the whole. Here the etching differs from the painting that served as the model. The portrait expresses devotion.

Leiris was a member of the Surrealist movement in Paris. Although Bacon would rather not have been labelled a Surrealist, he clearly did absorb the influence of

the movement as can be seen in the incongruous or subconscious imagery that arises in his pictures or, as in this particular portrait, an interest in ethnological masks. The fact that Leiris was an anthropologist could also have played a role in Bacon’s choice of form. In 1983 Leiris published a monograph on Francis Bacon, ‘Face et profil’, and translated into French the famous interviews with Bacon by the English critic David Sylvester.

Dit is de derde en laatste ets waar Bacon persoonlijk aan werkte. Latere etsen werden volledig uitbesteed aan een ‘maître’ en onder supervisie van de kunstenaar geproduceerd. Te zien is een man die beide handen om de kraan van een wastafel heeft geklemd en daar steun zoekt. De spanning in de voorstelling ontstaat door de kracht tussen de figuur en de voet van de wastafel. Het is alsof deze beide druk uitoefenen en elkaar in evenwicht houden. De arena of ring, die Bacon in veel werken als architectuur van de voorstelling gebruikt, versterkt het gevoel dat het hier om een krachtmeting gaat.

Het beeld is ontleend aan een voor Bacon traumatische scène aan de vooravond van de opening van zijn retrospectief in het Grand Palais in Parijs in 1971.

Toen werd zijn geliefde George Dyer (1934-1971) dood aangetroffen in de badkamer van zijn hotel in de Rue des Saints-Pères in Saint-Germain-des-Prés.

Dyer had, daar ging Bacon althans van uit, zelfmoord gepleegd door een over­ dosis pillen te nemen. Bacon had Dyer veelvuldig geschilderd, hij was zijn grote inspiratie en muze. Hij ontmoette hem in 1963 onder uitzonderlijke omstandig­ heden, namelijk toen Dyer een poging deed bij hem in te breken in zijn atelier.

This is the third and final etching on which Bacon worked personally. Later etchings were contracted out to a master printer and produced under the super­ vision of the artist. Here a man is seen grasping the tap of a washbasin with both hands, as if seeking solace there.

The force between the figure and the foot of the washbasin creates tension. It is as if both exert force and thus keep each other in balance. The arena or ring, which Bacon used in many works as the architecture of the picture, reinforces the feeling that this is a trial of strength.

The image is derived from a traumatic scene Bacon witnessed on the eve of the opening of his retrospective at the Grand Palais in Paris in 1971. His lover George Dyer (1934-1971) was found dead in the

bathroom of his hotel in the Rue des Saints-Pères in Saint-Germain-des-Prés.

Dyer had committed suicide by taking a pill overdose, at least so Bacon assumed.

Bacon had frequently painted Dyer: he was his great inspiration and muse.

They met in 1963 under extraordinary circumstances, when Dyer attempted to break into his studio.

De triptiek is een vorm die Bacon vanaf het begin van zijn kunstenaars­loopbaan heeft gebruikt. Het bood hem de mogelijkheid om een ontwikkeling in tijd te tonen, of een motief van verschillende kanten en in beweging te benaderen. Dit seriële aspect is belangrijk in Bacons werk. Het werk speelt zich in zekere zin tussen de beelden af.

Links en rechts zijn twee scènes te zien met elk een figuur die zich onder een donkere parasol bevindt aan het strand. De rechter figuur lijkt zichzelf te omarmen en is verweven met het meubel waarop hij ligt. De linkerfiguur is weggedoken in de parasol. In het middenpaneel verandert de strandscène in een arena waarin twee schermen zijn geplaatst met daarop figuren die toekijken. Toen Bacon aan het oorspronkelijke schilderij werkte stond voor hem vast dat hij een strandscène wilde schilderen en ook de genoemde figuren had hij al in gedachten. De centrale figuur echter, die we op de rug zien en die in beweging lijkt te zijn, vormde zich pas in het proces van het schilderen, waarbij toeval en ‘ongelukjes’ een rol speelden. Bacon meende dat een goed werk altijd afhankelijk is van wat er in onvoorziene momenten gebeurt - tijdens het schilderen. Tegelijk wilde hij strak controle houden over het werk. De dynamiek van zijn werk speelt zich af tussen deze polen van regie en toeval.

Dit werk werd verworven door J.P. Moueix, die tot zijn dood in 2003 de eige­ naar was van Château Pétrus, de beroemde Bordeaux wijn die tegenwoordig tot de duurste van Frankrijk behoort. Eerder schilderde Bacon een portret van Moueix in ruil waarvoor de kunstenaar zoveel Pétrus mocht drinken als hij wenste, een leven lang.

The triptych is a form Bacon used from the beginning of his artistic career. It offered him the opportunity to show a progression in time, or study a motif from different sides and in motion. This serial aspect is important in Bacon’s work. In a certain sense the actual work takes place between the images.

Left and right show two scenes, each with a figure under a dark umbrella at the beach. The right figure seems to be in a self-embrace and is intertwined with the furniture on which he lies. The left figure is tucked away in the umbrella.

In the middle panel, the beach scene changes into an arena where two screens are placed with figures on top watching. Bacon definitely intended to paint a beach scene when he started working on the original painting and already had the figures in mind.

However the central figure, which we see from the rear and seems to be moving, formed itself only in the process of painting, whereby chance and ‘accidents’ played a role. Bacon believed that a good work always depends on what happens in unforeseen moments - during the painting process. At the same time he wished to keep tight control over the work. The dynamic of his work takes place between these opposing poles of control and chance.

This work was acquired by J.P. Moueix, who, until his death in 2003, was the owner of Château Pétrus, the famous Bordeaux wine label that is currently one of the most expensive in France. Bacon had once painted a portrait of Moueix in return for which the artist could drink as much Pétrus as he wished during his lifetime.

Ze hervormen, maar je weet niet precies hoe.

You never know what effect an image has on you. Images enter your brain, and then you just don’t know how they are assimilated or absorbed. The’re transformed, but you don’t know exactley how.

Een leidmotief in Bacons werk is de (ambigue) relatie tussen figuur en ruimte.

In dit geval krijgt de zittende figuur een ongedefinieerde echo in de verschijning van een tweede figuur die opdoemt in het zwart en zich net buiten de ruimte bevindt waarin de hoofdfiguur zit. Het zou een medemens kunnen zijn, een dubbelganger of een denkbeeldige figuur die de gedachten van de hoofdfiguur probeert binnen te dringen.

A leitmotif in Bacon’s work is the (ambi­ guous) relationship between figure and space. In this case, the seated figure acquires an undefined echo with the appearance of a second figure emerging from the black, just outside the space containing the central figure. It could be a fellow human being, a doppelgänger or an imaginary figure trying to penetrate the thoughts of the central figure.
