The prematurely deceased Erik Andriesse (1957-1993) has become famous for his paintings and drawings of flowers, skulls and animal skeletons. As a child prodigy he was already causing a stir with his first gallery exhibition at the age of fifteen. Inspired by graffiti and the young German savages of the eighties, his style of painting and drawing became explosive in character.

Lesser-known is that he also worked with ceramics in the European Ceramic Work Centre in Den Bosch, during what turned out to be the last year of his life. These dishes and vases, often of considerable proportions, are closely related to the subject matter

and colours of his drawings and paintings.

The majority of them have never before been exhibited and are still in the possession of the foundation that manages his legacy. For the first time there is now a book about these unknown pieces by Andriesse. A significant addition to existing – sold out – publications.

Ludo van Halem is curator of 20th century art at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. John Hutchinson, art historian and orientalist, lives and works in Ireland.

Jos Poodt is former-curator of Museum Het Kruithuis.

Elly Stegeman is curator of the Stedelijk Museum ’s-Hertogenbosch.

For most people, Jeroen Bosch is the devil painter. A fascinating figure, he was able to translate the fears of medieval people into dark, hellish scenes and worlds full of bizarre, terrifying monsters. This image served as inspiration for various authors to write haunting novels. But is this right?

Research is providing increasing proof that Bosch held a very different position in society than that of a subversive artist who, in the seclusion of his studio, entrusted his bizarre inventions to panel. What is now emerging is that the artist was completely interwoven with his surroundings and culture, which to us seems to be made of paradoxes. A deep, often-superstitious piety with evocative, collective rituals existed alongside indulgence in passions, a great desire for knowledge and learning and an exuberant lifestyle. We are

referring here to the elite, the high nobility, the clients of Jeroen Bosch, who in turn was closely interlaced with the urbane bourgeoisie.

Convivial nobles and townspeople, lavish tournaments, excessive celebrations, religious fanaticism, demonic possession, popular piety, dreams, mysticism and medieval ‘selfhelp literature’ are all included around the central theme of the book: Bosch’s painting Tuin der Lusten (Garden of Delights). In a richly illustrated search for the meaning and contemporary function of Jeroen Bosch’s magnum opus, a portrait of the artist and his surroundings comes to life.

On 1 October 2013, the Stichting Kerkelijk Kunstbezit in Nederland (SKKN) closed its doors after 36 years.

Contemporary art in Dutch churches 1990-2015 is being released to mark this occasion.

The Netherlands is becoming secular, the churches are empty, but interest in our religious culture remains undiminished.

The link between art and church has been a popular topic over the last 25 years – against all expectations perhaps. A striking amount of contemporary art has now been given a temporary or permanent home in ecclesiastical spaces. This is coupled with major changes.

New forms of art are emerging: performance, video, installation. Church buildings are being discovered by art: the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam – ordinarily used for religious worship – has recently become a home to contemporary art with international allure.

Outside the church we see the emergence of tranquillity centres: multi-religious spaces where art and design fulfil an important role.

Contemporary art in Dutch churches 19902015 gives, for the first time, an image of the polyphonic dialogue between (museum) art and church during times of secularism. The art – from Jan Dibbets to Teun Hocks, from Marc Mulders to Marlene Dumas, from Maria Roosen to Tinkebell – is the starting point, while the church provides the context and (often literally) the space.

The twenty articles and interviews are illustrated with photos and image essays.

BAS JAN ADER MARION VAN WIJK Appreciation for the work of Bas Jan Ader (1942-1975) has only increased since his disappearance during a solo sailing journey on the Atlantic Ocean in 1975. Today he is considered to be one of the most significant Dutch artists of the twentieth century.

Marion van Wijk, artist/performer, has been researching Ader’s life and work for a number of years. Together with poet Koos Dalstra she has visited locations that were important to the conceptual artist during his life, such as Groningen where he was born, Los Angeles where he lived from 1962 to 1975 and Chatham (Cape Cod) from where he departed with his sailing boat. She has also spoken to family members, friends and colleague artists - such as Ger van Elk – who revealed many new facts.

At the end of the book is an interview with Mary Sue Andersen, Ader’s widow, with who the author had close contact while writing the book. This has all created a wonderful result.

Not a factual biography of Ader, because there are quite a few gaps caused by his numerous travels, but it is a ‘biographic’ book in which images play an important role. Bas Jan Ader’s most significant work is presented in a separate section.

Marion van Wijk was also involved in the VPRO documentary Here is always somewhere and the exhibition and catalogue Please don’t leave me (Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen), both about Bas Jan Ader. Together with Koos Dalstra she published In Search of the Miraculous, 143/76, Bas Jan Ader, Discoveryfile, the Spanish marine report about Ader’s sailing boat.

Publication accompanying the solo exhibition of the prominent British artist Tim Head.

Fictions presents an extensive new series of large, unique digital prints on acrylic and works on paper. Head has developed an innovative oeuvre since 1990, including projections, LCD screens and ink jet prints with which he explores the digital space.

Head’s current works are an extension of his project entitled ‘the digital medium is an elusive material substance’.

Tim Head (1946) was born and raised in London. He studied at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, where he was taught by Richard Hamilton and Ian Stephenson, among others. One of his own students is Roxy Music frontman Bryan Ferry. Head exhibits all over the world.

With the introduction of the polaroid camera in 1947 it became possible, for the first time, to develop photos immediately, without the intervention of a photo lab. The technique quickly enjoyed widespread popularity among artists. The opportunity to immediately assess the end result and if necessary to make a new photo certainly contributed to this. Veldhoen also used the polaroid as aide mémoire and for preliminary studies and sometimes even for capturing fleeting situations. But for him, the polaroid was more than just a tool. This can be seen in the polaroids taken as independent images and taken with a great sense of ambience, light, colour and composition, such as the intimate insights into Veldhoen’s home life, portraits, selfportraits, nudes, holiday snaps and images of a documentary nature. Special features are the so-called manipulated polaroids,

a technique adopted from the US whereby spectacular effects are achieved by drawing with a sharp object on the unhardened film emulsion. Veldhoen mastered this technique, which enabled him to manipulate reality in the finest details. Veldhoen developed a true passion for the medium and created more than five thousand photos. Despite their high quality, these unique images suffered a hidden existence for many years. This publication includes a representative selection of around fifty polaroids and is intended as a first introduction to Veldhoen’s polaroids, which effortlessly compete with the work of renowned polaroid photographers.

Ed de Heer is ex-director of the Rembrandthuis in Amsterdam and author of, among others, Veldhoen: the graphic work and co-author of Rembrandt Etchings from the Zorn Museum.

Georgia Russel Art With a Scalpel

Georgia Russell is Scottish artist, working in Paris, making paper sculptures. Her creations are drawn not with a pencil, but with a scalpel.

She cuts, chops and dissects paper taken from printed material and in doing so she transforms old books, music scores, maps, newspapers and photos into artworks. She has transformed a Scottish family bible dating from 1900 in this way, thus giving form to the ‘the invisible energy’ of this holy book. Her 3D

meshwork and associated shadows function as a web of memories of an event, person or place. The original sources are hardly recognisable due to the characteristic feathery appearance of her work.

Georgia Russell (1974) studied at the Royal College of Art. Her work is exhibited in the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Centre George Pompidou.

‘In his paintings, I think Van Hoef always tries to portray that exact moment when time seems to stand still and reality seems to change into illusionism. It’s lovely that, as an onlooker, you can lose yourself in his work, but it’s difficult to explain why this is. Perhaps it is because he does not work with photographically realistic images, but always leaves just enough room for your own interpretation. Travel is a component of the creation process of his paintings, but is not directly visible in his work in a literal sense. He does not create

recognisable landscapes that are reminiscent of the southern coast of France or mountains in Morocco. They are unknown, artificial places, non-specific locations that you could, in a sense, find anywhere. In the English language we have the perfect word for this: ubiquitous’.

In 2013 Antwerp was ‘European city of Sport’.

For the MAS and Antwerp Sport city, this was reason enough to initiate an amateur football project.

Photographer Hans van der Meer was commissioned to create eight large panorama photos to be displayed in the light boxes, measuring three by ten metres, that can be found on every floor of the promenade in the MAS. At the request of the museum he also created a series of portraits to represent the many nationalities of the multicultural city of Antwerp.

Over a period of ten weeks, Van der Meer worked with a team of three assistants

on the project, whereby he not only photographed, but also acted as director.

Furthermore, Hans van der Meer used his familiar style from Flemish Fields (2000) to create a film portraying humorous observations of the Antwerp amateur football scene.

Just as with the successful Fields of Holland (1998) Jan Mulder wrote a text, in this case about his memories of the Bosuil stadium and the professional football scene in Antwerp in the sixties.

Annabel Oosteweeghel (1969) is a photographer living in Noordwijk. She graduated from the Academie St. Joost having studied Audio-visual design. Her film background means that her photos are more than just images. They tell a story. Her commercial work focuses on lifestyle and people. Annabel has photographed for numerous advertising agencies and magazines both in the Netherlands and abroad. Her work has been published in the New York Times Magazine, Elle, Volkskrant Magazine and she also has large commercial campaigns to her name. Alongside her commercial work, she also works on personal photography projects.

The biannual Photo Kees Scherer Prize for the best Dutch photo book has been awarded eleven times to top-class photographers: Catrien Ariëns, Bertien van Manen, Eddy Posthuma de Boer, Paul den Hollander, Theo Baart, Céline van Balen, Geert van Kesteren, Kadir van Lohuizen, Niels Stomp, Henk Wildschut and Viviane Sassen. In 2015, the prize will be awarded for the twelfth and last time during the Naarden Photo festival. A tradition since 1993, it will be concluded with the presentation of an extensive, compact, accessible publication

presenting the winning books, combined with the jury report and also with current work by the prize winners.

Hans van Blommestein worked as art director for Avenue. He was also chief curator of the Naarden Photo Festival, designer for the World Press Photo yearbooks and art director of M, the monthly magazine of NRC Handelsblad. He is co-compiler and designer of Fotofolio.

Bart Nieuwenhuijs is a freelance all round photographer. After a successful period in magazine photography, Nieuwenhuijs devoted himself to advertising photography. He is co-compiler of Fotofolio and board member of the Kees Scherer Foundation.

Our Nature is a great international photo project about the meaning of the city park and our relationship with nature in an urban context.

Since a few years ago, more than half of the world’s population has been living in cities.

This migration into city environments will continue unchecked in the future. Parks are not only places to escape from the city, but also places where we can participate in city life. The park exudes lifestyle, a place to be. On warm days, the city park is extremely popular.

Our nature shows the importance of the city park and says something about how we interact with nature within the city. It is a timeless subject and very topical.

Over the last six years, Janine Schrijver has photographed the various facets of the park and its visitors all over the world. She did this by capturing still lives, areas of wilderness and urban landscapes. The book presents people literally trapped in nature. By photographing such different places in the world, she places an emphasis on man’s universal longing for space and natural surroundings.

Two years ago, Ringel Goslinga was given the opportunity to use Lee To Sang’s camera for his own photography project. Lee To Sang, Chinese by birth, completed his photography studies in Hong Kong and opened his first studio in Suriname. In 1978 he travelled to the Netherlands to open a photo studio in the popular Amsterdam neighbourhood ‘de Pijp’.

Many people from this multicultural neighbourhood visited his studio to have portrait shots made for and with their foreign family. It was also possible to have passport photos made.

The portrait photos in the display window of his shop formed a representation of the local residents, often portrayed with plastic flowers and plants as colourful backgrounds, with or without photo wallpaper imported from Hong Kong. Lee To Sang closed the doors of his photo studio in 2003 with the aim of devoting his retirement to painting, the great art.

When Goslinga saw Lee To Sang’s portraits for the first time, he was struck by their resemblance to his memories of this neighbourhood.

Memories of the exciting world in which his father found himself. Memories he shares with his half brother and half sister. Memories that are understood by his friends who, without realising it, grew up in the same street as his half bother. With Lee To Sang’s camera, Goslinga captured images in the vicinity of the former studio, looking for a last reflection of the people and the time that are embedded so deeply in his memory. The result is a series of portraits that creates a link between the work of To Sang and Goslinga’s own past. Perhaps this is called nostalgia.

This publication provides an overview of the work of Nacho Carbonell in the first seven years after his graduation from the Design Academy Eindhoven. His exhibition in the Groninger Museum marks a good moment to substantively examine the motives of his practices. Laura Chan writes about follies, Thomas Jellis about the importance of collaboration, Veerle Devos describes Nacho’s career and Li Edelkoort discusses his material use. The texts do not illustrate the images, but they describe aspects of the professional practice.

The images and texts illustrate each other: this helps the viewer to discover connections

between the techniques, forms and materials that would otherwise not easily been found.

Nacho Carbonell studied industrial design at the Spanish University Cardenal Herrera CEU. He then continued his studies at the Design Academy Eindhoven, where he graduated cum laude in 2007. In the same year he immediately won the Grand Prix SEB during the Design Parade (Villa Noailles, France) and in 2009 he was chosen as Designer of the Future during Design Miami. Rossana Orlandi discovered his work early on and ever since has been exhibiting it annually with great enthusiasm, including at the Salone del Mobile in Milan. The Groninger Museum, which has been collecting his work ever since the beginning of his career, is home to his first museum exhibition (Nov. 2014 – April 2015).

Helga Fassbinder is an urban developer, political scientist, writer, photographer, em. professor TU Eindhoven and TU Hamburg. She fought for the preservation of the Anne Frank chestnut in Amsterdam as a living cultural legacy and founded the Stichting Support Anne Frank Tree in 2007. The famous large chestnut tree as micro cosmos also fitted perfectly in her concept of ‘the enclosed city as a form of nature’, which she had already proposed in 2002 under the title Biotope City. Since 2006 she has worked as publicist of the international online journal Biotope City, within the framework of Stichting Biotope City, of which she is also founder. Johannes Eckmann is a German composer, conductor and violinist and teacher at the Musiekschool Markdorf (Bodensee). His compositions (chamber music, symphonies, opera) are often performed in various locations. Jos Versteegen is a Dutch poet. He has published several well-received poetry bundles, and his poems have also been included in various anthologies, such as that of Gerrit Komrij 2004.

Het dagboek van Barend Davidson Go Davidson is op 1 augustus 1947 aanwezig bij de plechtige herbegrafenis van leden van de Stijkelgroep, verzetsstrijders die al vroeg in de oorlog actief waren. Het Englandspiel was hen fataal geworden. Go krijgt van een haar onbekende man een onooglijk notitieboekje overhandigd waarvan de vele bladzijden piepklein met potlood zijn beschreven. Toch herkent zij het handschrift direct; het is het dagboekje dat haar man, de Zwolse verzetsstrijder Barend Davidson, tussen november 1942 en januari 1943 in de gevangenis in Berlijn bijhield. Via allerlei omwegen kwam het na de oorlog terug naar Zwolle. Het geeft een fascinerend beeld van het leven in de Berlijnse gevangenis waar Barend Davidson meer dan anderhalf jaar onder erbarmelijke omstandigheden verbleef. Na de berechting werd hij op 4 juni 1943 op Schiessplatz Tegel bij Berlijn geëxecuteerd, samen met 31 andere lotgenoten.

De auteur van dit boek, Bert J. Davidson, plaatst dit verhaal tegen het decor van het Interbellum en de Wederopbouw in Zwolle. Samen met andere gebeurtenissen wordt zo een indrukwekkend

It is perhaps the most famous tree in the world: the chestnut tree on the Prinsengracht that Anne Frank could see from the window while confined in her secret annex. Her only view of the outside world. The leaves on the branches, the flowers and the fruits showed her the progression of the changing seasons, the birds and the free world. In her diary she wrote a moving description of the hope this tree gave her. The tree no longer exists, it was blown down by a storm. Only photos, texts and songs keep the memory alive. Anne’s tree brings this great, wonderful symbol of hope and tolerance to life once again.

Coffee, tea and tobacco have been inextricably linked to Dutch society for centuries. Yet there was a time - the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries - when these new products were imported from afar, adopted by trendsetters and then found their way to large sections of the population. The same was true for spices, sugar and other foodstuffs. The introduction was linked to the emergence of the Netherlands as a sea faring nation. Ships flying the Dutch flag sailed the seas and oceans of the world. The merchant fleet was enormous and brought great prosperity. Exotic products, which were in great demand all over Europe, arrived in Amsterdam. This resulted in enormous profits.

From Distant Lands covers the history of these products with a broad perspective.

The numerous illustrations show how the products found their way into households, but also depict the beauty of the porcelain crockery, silver coffeepots and other utensils that were needed for the consumption of these foodstuffs and luxury items.

The stating point for It’s every colour, silver, gold is a poem dating from 1925 by Observator, the pseudonym of the Staphorst teacher Jan Klaas Mulder, who in the poem and also by way of pieces sent in to the Meppeler Courant (under the pseudonym ‘Opmerker’) criticised the opponents of land consolidation.

In his poem he reproaches the residents of Staphorst for being preoccupied with physical appearance and fashion, closing their eyes to the future. He does this with a great deal of humour and talent, while others use only pure Staphorst dialect. The poem covers several attributes that are considered to be

showpieces. This is the starting point for the beautiful photos taken by Dirk Kok, showing Staphorst-ers and jewellery in all their glory.

It’s every colour, silver, gold is an ode to a disappearing world, the last expressions of which we can still see today. Dirk Kok has captured them like no other.

Dirk Kok was the manager of the Museum Farm in Staphorst from 1982 to 2012. He is co-founder of the Historische Vereniging in Staphorst. Previously he published Aanzeggen. Rouw- en begrafenistradities in Staphorst by Lecturis.

Landschap Net zo divers als de ‘Meze’ is ook het landschap dat de ingrediënten ervoor produceert. Reizend van het ene deel van Syrië naar het andere kom je door steeds andere landschappen.

De naam Syrië werd oorspronkelijk gegeven aan de gehele oostelijke kuststrook van de Middellandse Zee, in het Westen ook wel de Levant genaamd, plus het gebergte en de vruchtbare vlakten erachter. De moderne staat heeft nog maar een kort stukje kust dat ligt ingeklemd tussen Libanon in het zuiden en Turkije in het noorden.

Naar het binnenland verbreedt het gebied zodat uiteindelijk Syrië toch een groot deel van de oostelijke waterschei van het kustgebergte binnen z’n grenzen heeft. Regenval in de bergstreek voorziet de stromen en rivieren die aan de oostkant de valleien instromen het hele jaar van water.

De hele streek is gezegend met vruchtbare grond waardoor het al sinds mensenheugenis een van de belangrijkste landbouwgebieden in dat deel van de wereld is. Die gunstige omstandigheden hebben ervoor gezorgd dat het onderdeel is van de ‘Bakermat van de Beschaving’.

De Orontes of Asi(opstandige) rivier ontspringt in de Bekaa vallei in Libanon en stroomt in noordelijke richting achter de kuststrook langs tot het in Turkije in de Middellandse zee uitmondt. De Orontes vormt de as van de noord-zuid verbinding.

Het geeft de grens aan tussen de rijke westkant van Syrië en het uitgestrekte oostelijke deel dat hoofdzakelijk één grote dorre vlakte is. (50)

In een religieuze school De poort van de Al Firdaws Madrasa in Aleppo was nog dicht toen wij er aankwamen. Dat gaf mij de gelegenheid om de typische ingang te tekenen van deze religieuze school die reeds in 1236 gebouwd is door een voorname dame. Intussen werd de Imam uit bed getrommeld. Hij arriveerde spoedig om ons in goede sier binnen te laten.

In het binnenhof met de overdekte galerij kregen we ieder een snoepje van hem. Aan Will die zomers gekleed was, gaf hij één van zijn traditionele bruine wollen jassen.

De ontspannen vriendelijkheid van onze ontvangst zette de toon.

Het was aangenaam toeven in de Madrasa. En dat niet alleen: we leerden er ook nog wat.

In de studieruimte hing als enige muurdecoratie een grote felgekleurde poster. Het verbeelde de stamboom der Profeten, zoals benoemd in de Koran, het boek van goddelijke aanwijzingen en richtlijnen van de Mohammedanen.

In één oogopslag was daarop te zien wat de Joodse, Christelijke en Mohammedaanse godsdiensten bindt: het zijn allen loten aan dezelfde stam.

Omdat wij uit een cultuur komen waar het accent juist ligt op de verschillen waren wij blij verrast te leren dat wij nagenoeg de hele Bijbelse geschiedenis delen.

On 14 March 2011 six friends began a trip through Syria. Once there they soon realise that the Arab Spring was causing increasing unrest. Nevertheless the friends were able to enjoy the country and the sights undisturbed.

This resulted in more than seventy pen drawings. At the end of the journey the drawings were fed into a blog over a period of three months and texts were added. While working on the blog it became clear that there was a hardening in Syria between the rebels and the regime, of which the outcome was unclear. Using word and image, this book attempts to sketch a portrait of a country

that no longer exists, a country in which different groups and religions appear to exist in peaceful harmony. The emphasis here lies on the deceptive image of self-reliance, immutability and unity in diversity, while in reality Syria was and still is a mixture of internal tension and external forces.

Peti Buchel is a cartoonist and visual scribe in the illustrator’s collective Beeldleveranciers. She began in the seventies by drawing cartoons for the legendary underground comic book: ‘Tante Leny Presenteert’.

She is currently travelling and drawing her way through Morocco.

NICOLAAS ‘NICO’ DE ROOIJ (ROTTERDAM, 27 FEBRUARI 1906 - DEN HAAG, 17 FEBRUARI 1959).

Nico de Rooij was een van de meest prominente Nederlandse jazzpianisten. Al op 8-jarige leeftijd volgde hij lessen van de bekende Rotterdamse pianist Marc Velt. Vóór zijn eerste officiële engagement in het Haagse Palace in december 1920 begeleidde hij zijn ouders, die als het zangduo De Rooy op kermissen werkten. Nico’s broer, Casper, speelde viool en ook zijn zoons werden artiest. Zijn oudste zoon, Nico junior, is concertpianist. Zijn jongste zoon Karel werd wereldberoemd als Mini van het komisch duo Mini &Maxi. Ook Nico’s vrouw Mimi stamt uit een artiestenfamilie. Haar vader was de Rotterdamse dirigent Karel Das van Grol. Mimi speelde viool en saxofoon. In 1921 toerde Nico met het ensemble van Faveur’s Variété. In 1922 trad hij op als Nico Le Roy ‘Neêrlandsch kleinste piano humorist’ in het WB Theater en het café-restaurant Bécude aan de Noordsingel.

Van 1924 tot 1926 maakte Nico deel uit van het orkest van Eddy Roos, dat in Pschorr aan de Korte Hoogstraat speelde. Zijn eerste plaatopname stamt uit 1926 op het Vox-label met het Belgische orkest The Original Berkeley’s Five, dat in september 1925 dé attractie was van het pas geopende La Gaîté. Nico was de derde Nederlandse jazzmusicus, die (na Louis de Vries en Joop de Leur) plaatopnamen maakte. Van 1 januari tot eind juni 1927 toerde hij met Jack en Louis de Vries met de Louis Bouwmeester-revue Nou Nog Mooier. In 1928 stond hij op het podium van de Nenijto met het orkest van de gebroeders De Vries, The Midnight Rounders. In 1929 speelde hij bij The Negro Thompson Band en The Kentucky Kardinals en werkte hij in Berlijn met de bands van Louis de Vries, René Weiss en Marek Weber. Begin 1930 maakte hij in Parijs film- en plaatopnames met Louis Davids. Rond maart 1933 was hij de pianist van de band van de bekende zwarte Amerikaanse trompettist Robert ‘Bobby’ Martin.

Met hem vierde hij op 20 augustus 1937 ook zijn 15-jarig artiesten jubileum in de tot ‘Nico Palace’ omgedoopte club. Eind 1937 tot begin 1938 had hij weer een engagement bij The Internationals met onder andere de trompettisten Clara de Vries en haar echtgenoot Willy Schobbe. In de zomer van 1938 startte hij bij de band van Harry Calling (Aaron van der Kloot).

Tussen zijn lange engagementen door trad hij regelmatig op als allround solopianist. Van 1940 tot en met maart 1941 werkte hij bij de bands van trompettist Levie ‘Louis’ Bannett, de Surinaamse saxofonist Lex van Spall en het orkest Piet van Dijk met onder andere Arie Valkhoff op bas en Jaap Valkhoff, tweede tenorsax. In april 1943 verbond hij zich aan het orkest van Arie Maasland. In 1944 was Nico solopianist in de Rotterdamse bar Destin en het Amsterdamse café Parasiana. Tijdens de Hongerwinter bestond zijn gage uit een dagelijkse warme maaltijd. Kort na de bevrijding toerde hij door België met het orkest van Piet van Dijk en verzorgde hij radio-uitzendingen van Radio Herrijzend Nederland. In 1946 had hij een langdurig engagement als solopianist in het Haagse Villa d’Este. In datzelfde jaar vierde hij op 29 oktober in de Haagse dierentuin zijn (uitgestelde) 25-jarig jubileum als musicus. Aan het eind van zijn leven werkte Nico de Rooij voornamelijk als solopianist. Zijn laatste engagement was begin 1959 in het Rotterdamse Chez Bâton in de Hartmansstraat.

In juni 1933 verving hij de Franse pianist Leo Detemple bij Jack de Vries’ Internationals. In maart 1935 verliet hij The Internationals om pianist te worden van het AVRO dansorkest de Decibels. Op 26 augustus 1935 remplaceerde hij Theo Uden Masman tijdens de befaamde plaatopnames van de Ramblers met Coleman Hawkins en Connie Boswell. Nico was een betere pianist dan Theo Uden Masman. In 1936 ging hij op tournee met Eddy Meenk’s Radio Stars (voorheen de Decibels), de band van Harry Pohl en de zangeres en

DE JONGE LIEFHEBBERS Voor de ‘modernisten’ was de bebop muziekzaalinhoudelijk gezien veel interessanter dan de oude stijl en de dixieland. Maar hoe maakte je die complexe muziek eigen? De meeste conservatoria wilden van jazzmuziek niets weten. Jazzbeoefening was zelfs verboden, op straffe van verwijdering van de opleiding. De musici leerden de nieuwe jazz kennen via de radio, van platen en vooral van elkaar.

Ook door de gestage opmars van de popmuziek kon de nieuwe

generatie jazzmusici zich daardoor slechts moeizaam een professionele status te verwerven. Hun positie valt te vergelijken met die van hun voorgangers in de jaren dertig, toen hoogopgeleide jongeren met een baan jazzmuziek op amateurbasis voor hun plezier speelden. In Rotterdam was een club enthousiaste liefhebbers actief die (jazz)muziek maken als een zinvolle vrije tijdsbesteding zagen.

Slechts een enkeling kon hiermee zijn brood verdienen.

Willem van Empel kon vooral via zijn contact met impresario Wim Wigt bekende jazzacts, zoals Eddie Harris, het Sun Ra Arkestra, Clifford Jordan, Archie Shepp, Pharoah Sanders en het Dave Holland Quintet boeken. De ‘eigen’ groepen van de slagwerkers Willem de Blanken en Coen Aalbers, het Thelonius New World Orchestra, De Kweekbak onder leiding van Keimpe de Jong en het Workshop Orkest onder leiding van Ruud Bergamin repeteerden in het jazzcentrum en vulden de ‘gaten’ in het programma. Thelonius, dat door vrijwel iedereen hardnekkig met de tweede ‘o’ geschreven werd, draaide al bijna drie jaar op de tomeloze inzet van Van Empel en de vrijwillige medewerkers.

Een deugdelijke financiële administratie ontbrak. Nog steeds ging al het geld dat binnenkwam naar de programmering. Niemand verdiende wat.

Omdat Thelonius niet akkoord ging met een nieuw subsidieaanbod van 50.000 gulden, besloot de Kunststichting met ingang van 1 juli 1988 de ondersteuning dan maar helemaal te stoppen. In het rapport ‘Thelonius, jazzcentrum in het hart van Rotterdam’ had Van Empel het dubbele bedrag gevraagd. In nota bene haar eigen rapport had de RKS het jaarlijkse exploitatietekort op 225.000 gulden begroot.

Thelonius ontving over een periode van dertig maanden slechts 48.000 gulden subsidie.

De huurschuld was inmiddels opgelopen tot 40.000 gulden. De RKS bleef bij haar standpunt dat een jazzcentrum niet op één persoon kan draaien. De organisatie en het bestuur moesten meer body krijgen. ‘Als je met een delegatie moet onderhandelen die uit Van Empel en Jules Deelder bestaat, kom je niet ver,’ zei een ambtenaar.

Rotterdam was and is a genuine pioneering city. Shortly after the end of World War I, jazz music in the Maas city grew to become a prominent source of inspiration for the visual arts, graphic design, fashion, literature, dance and even for classical music. After the dance rage of The Roaring Twenties, the Rotterdam jazz musicians developed into international-class musicians. Rotterdam built the greatest theatres and dance halls, like the legendary Pschorr, which didn’t survive the bombardment. During World War II the number of jazz concerts reaches record highs. After Dolle Dinsdag and the razzias, jazz music found itself in a city without men. In the fifties, the local jazz clubs blossomed and the new Doelen opened with its famous three-day jazz festival Newport in Europe. The concerts in the legendary Sunship Jazzbunker, B14, the Harbour Jazzclub, jazz café Dizzy and later Thelonious formed the rich pallet of styles and genres that is characteristic of contemporary

jazz. The renowned jazz education program at Codarts, the concerts in Lantaren-Venster, Bird, the North Sea Jazz Festival and North Sea Roundtown also placed Rotterdam firmly back on the international jazz map.

Jazz in Rotterdam clarifies this conjunctural movement. The role of jazz in the cultural history goes further than music alone. The book will therefore appeal to a wide audience.

He is currently working as a music teacher at secondary school level and is a member of the Rotterdam Jazz Artists Memorial foundation. He has been researching the rich history of Rotterdam jazz life for many years. Zirkzee previously published notes about pop and jazz music, columns in the music journal Muziek in Beweging and a series of articles for the bulletin of the Dutch Jazz Archief.

In his recent work, Reinoud van Vught has dedicated himself to works on paper, whereby nature is his most significant subject. Rebecca Nelemans wrote a fascinating text for the book, formed around her e-mail conversation with Reinoud van Vught. If he asks me to write a text for a new publication, and suggests writing it in the form of an interview, I think it’s not such a great idea. I can quite easily imagine that such a text would consist of lengthy and detailed questions from my part, with brief yes, no answers from the artist in reply.”

Reinoud van Vught’s work is (1960) widely represented in museum, corporate and private collections.

Sandra Kruisbrink draws with pencil, tempera and with a knife. Her pieces have a light and open appearance, but they are made with care and are created using an extremely labour intensive process. She finds her inspiration in nature, and her recent work is dominated by trees and the forest. Although the work seems to be two dimensional, cut-out elements provide an extra layer in the pieces. The book presents a good representation of her work from the last ten years, with the emphasis on recent drawings.

Sandra Kruisbrink (1961) lives and works in Amsterdam. Her drawings were also included in the exhibition ‘All About Drawing’ in Stedelijk Museum Schiedam.

Fotograaf en columnist Rob Overmeer werkte een jaar aan deze serie als stadsfotograaf van Leiden. Iedere week publiceerde hij op de middenpagina van het Leidsch Dagblad een foto en daarbij een column van 300 woorden.

In dit boek is de hele serie gebundeld tot een meeslepend verhaal over de ziel van een stad.

Rob Overmeer (1971) werkt vanuit Leiden.

Hij heeft een grote verscheidenheid aan publicaties, fotorubrieken en reclamecampagnes op zijn naam staan.

The photo series Guardians of the City represents the story of the people who live and work behind the scenes of the city. The guardians of the city determine its shape. None of them realise that they have this power, as they’re continually forced to focus on their own passions, duties and quests for survival. Recording the personal stories of these anonymous people reveals the true identity of the city.

Photographer and columnist Rob Overmeer worked on this series for a whole year as Leiden’s city photographer. A full-page spread, consisting of a photo and a column of some 300 words, was published in the Leidsch Dagblad every week.

The whole series has been brought together in this book to form a gripping tale about the true soul of a city.

Zo’n 350 jaar geleden was de Republiek der Zeven Verenigde Nederlanden de machtigste staat in de wereld met de sterkste vloot en een bloeiende handel tot in alle uithoeken van de wereld.

Die tijd bracht Constantijn en Christiaan Huygens voort.

Constantijn (1596-1687) was dichter en diplomaat. Als secretaris van de stadhouders van Oranje was hij een van de architecten van de groei en bloei van de Republiek. Zijn briljante zoon Christiaan (1629-1695) ontwikkelde zich tot een groot wetenschapper, bedreven in wiskunde, natuurkunde en sterrenkunde. Hij verbeterde o.a. het slingeruurwerk, de toverlantaarn en de telescoop, verklaarde de ringen van Saturnus en correspondeerde met de andere grote wetenschappers van zijn tijd, zoals Newton en Descartes.

Het dagboek van Barend Davidson Een Zwolse Jood in het verzet

Go Davidson is op 1 augustus 1947 aanwezig bij de plechtige herbegrafenis van leden van de Stijkelgroep, verzetsstrijders die al vroeg in de oorlog actief waren. Het Englandspiel was hen fataal geworden. Go krijgt van een haar onbekende man een onooglijk notitieboekje overhandigd waarvan de vele bladzijden piepklein met potlood zijn beschreven. Toch herkent zij het handschrift direct; het is het dagboekje dat haar man, de Zwolse verzetsstrijder Barend Davidson, tussen november 1942 en januari 1943 in de gevangenis in Berlijn bijhield. Via allerlei omwegen kwam het na de oorlog terug naar Zwolle. Het geeft een fascinerend beeld van het leven in de Berlijnse gevangenis waar Barend Davidson meer dan anderhalf jaar onder erbarmelijke omstandigheden verbleef. Na de berechting werd hij op 4 juni 1943 op Schiessplatz Tegel bij Berlijn geëxecuteerd, samen met 31 andere lotgenoten.
