Leche Magazine VOL 5 FULL

Page 1

Welcome, Welcome, Welcome.

Welcome to the old. Welcome to the new.

This is Leche Magazine. Leche Magazine Volume 5… Another year around the sun.

2023 - 2024: a year filled with growth and experience. A year filled with success. A year filled with failure. A year filled with fear. A year filled with confidence. A year filled with love. A year filled with heartbreak. Nonetheless, another year coming out on top.

2023 - 2024: I learned to be patient. I learned to trust. I learned how to take things day by day. I learned that creativity comes in waves and that it’s okay if that wave doesn’t come. I learned that it’s okay to lean on those around you when their creativity is more potent than yours. At the end of the day, they want to see you win as much as you want yourself to win. You just have to trust.

2023 - 2024: I met some of the most rawest creatives. Creatives with deep roots. Creatives that don’t front. Creatives that are hungry. Creatives that are restless. Creatives that see this as more than just money. Creatives that see this as more than just recognition. Creatives that have a vision. Creatives that are doing everything possible to make their dreams a reality.

All these things have led me and the team to create this new volume of Leche Magazine. A culmination of creatives trying to inspire themselves and those around them. A culmination of creatives who want more out of life. These creatives have been chewed up and spat out in their own ways, but alas, they chase what they’re meant to chase: their dreams.

As Virgil Abloh once said, “Dreams come true when you don’t sleep.”

These creatives are living this quote day in and day out. If they can do it, why can’t you and I?

Thank you to my amazing team. Leche Magazine and Francisco wouldn’t be where they are today without any of you. You know who you are. 4L

Thank you for reading my scattered thoughts. Now, enjoy Leche Magazine Vol. 5 <3

At Leche Magazine, our mission is to inspire creatives and give them a platform to show off what they’re passionate about. One day we will have built a global publication, and all types of people will use us as an opportunity to grow. Leche Magazine will one day bring in and house a wide variety of driven individuals who want to execute the same mission as us. We will all eat in abundance.

NICOLE JOY MENDOZA

Nicole Joy Mendoza, commonly known as “NikkiNailHaus”, is an upcoming nail artist from Silver Spring, Maryland. She has shed a light on expanding the nail canvas. Nicole’s versatile clientele ranges from earth toned to her well known “kawaii sets” that have a drastic amount of charms.

At a young age, Nicole’s inspiration started from her mother. Recognized as the “go-to” woman for at home mani-pedis among family and friends. “I always wanted to do nails, that’s what my mom’s been doing. That shit is cool and then I remember when I was little I would always watch nail videos. And then I was in middle school and got the [nail] kit set which was like $11.” Nicole says In her earlier interviews with inteeviews.

Nicole’s humble journey with a $11 nail kit has done her wonders into inspiring herself to improve on nail art. Who would have thought it would progress into a career she has today. Starting out wasn’t so easy as brushing nail polish on a single nail. Endless hours spent perfecting a satisfying set seemed worthwhile, but was it truly?

In-between her nail journey, Nicole had a passion for dancing, working in retail, filming Make-up tutorials, and teaching make-up to friends and family. She continued to be a creative individual despite her time away from nail art. Nicole’s journey represents the outcome of those who demonstrate patience with their skill. Regardless of the countless hours that life has taken away from your passion, you will still find yourself igniting the light and continuing where you left off.

A routine that Nicole has developed while through her first year of doing nail art helped her progress more and give more attention to details that she wants to make sure she has for each client. Nevertheless, the encouragement she received from family and friends to resume nails helped her progress faster to a point where Nicole’s art caught the attention of Kelloh, also known as Kellohfrompg, a renowned content creator from Maryland. This connection propelled Nicole’s career to new heights, marking it as a remarkable blessing. “I was really anxious when I first started out… I felt like people in my area already had the clientele and felt behind.” Nicole recalls.

In this era, competition is fierce, particularly in the nail industry. It’s not about the size of the canvas, but rather the artist’s unique approach to their craft that sets them apart. The ability to think outside the conventional boundaries is key.

What is the future for her career now? “The future for Nikkiisnailhauz is to expand in nail products,” says Nicole. “I love everything about the nail world and how it’s universal. It would be a dream to have my nail [business] across the world.” Only starting in the nail industry officially for only a year, Nicole has been given a great start by improving her own skills and always getting better each day.

Nicole also hopes that she will get to ex-

get more into not being afraid of nail art that takes extreme measures to get an ideal look” Nicole mentions. Time is truly a virtue. It is the way that we use the time we have to either make it worth something or nothing.

For a peek into the evolving tale of creativity, follow Nicole on her journey on Instagram! If Nicole’s nail style is something for you, feel free to reach out to her and get booked!

“ EVERYONE’S JOURNEY IS DIFFERENT . A NO IS NEVER THE END OF THE JOURNEY, THEY’RE ALL THE MORE A REMINDER OF HOW BADLY YOU WANT SOMETHING . ”

KAIA FAMBIE

In the ever-evolving world of body modification and piercing, few artists manage to stand out with their unique blend of creativity, skill, and advocacy. Kaia, known professionally and affectionately as Fambie, is one such piercer who has carved a niche for herself in this intricate and often misunderstood craft. Her story speaks volumes about the power of passion and the importance of embracing individuality.

Fambie’s entry into the world of body piercings happened rather by accident. Unsure of her future course, she became fascinated with the world of piercings while in college. This interest had been fueled by her father’s rewards for academic success, “In my freshman year of high school when I did well in school, my dad always took me to get piercings.” Her career trajectory began with an apprenticeship under piercer Finn, thanks to her persistent pursuit of an opportunity to work in a piercing shop on Saint Mark’s Place in New York City.

Fambie’s clientele grew naturally as a result of convenient walk-ins and a growing reputation of successful healings and piercer-client comfort. “I always have gratitude for any client that I have,” she says. Her talent and dedication soon caught

the attention of notable figures, including rappers like Lil Uzi Vert, which helped her to expand her popularity and influence. However, what really binds Fambie and her customers together is their mutual appreciation of body alteration as a form of expression and their personal connection to it. “My clients are very special people. The reason I think they’re special is because they hold body modification dear to them as a form of expression which is how I feel about body modification. It’s something that’s transcending and becoming palatable for society,” she explains, “at one point, piercing was taboo, so I think that people in a day and age where social media promotes certain pictures, it’s really cool to celebrate individuality. I think that body modification is a form of that.”

Even with her flare and confidence, Fambie acknowledges that even she gets anxious sometimes, especially when doing more complex piercings like facial dermals or genital piercings, “I think the reason why it is so nerve-wracking is because a person is entrusting you with her body and their well-being.” Her honesty about the challenges of her craft adds a layer of authenticity and relatability to her persona. Fambie’s experiments with play piercing and her openness to trying out new piercing locations—often motivated by her mentors Finn and Phil and the larger body modification community—further demonstrate her dedication to pushing the limits of body modification. “As I became more knowledgeable of certain people in the game, it naturally acted as a catalyst for me to want to do something different.”

Fambie’s personal piercing experiences, including self-piercing, have helped her hone her skills and broaden her knowledge regarding pain and discomfort and the healing process. “I know if I’m going to provide a service to clients, I should be able to be willing to do that for myself. It lets me improve my technique,” she states, highlighting the importance of self-experimentation in professional development. In addition to enhancing her technical proficiency, this direct involvement has increased her empathy for the struggles faced by her clients. She notes, “I would say that it’s human nature to be nervous. You know you’re going to be inflicting pain on yourself, so naturally, you’d get nervous. It’s definitely something that has allowed me to better manage my pain and compartmentalize the sensation of it. It helps me better navigate what to expect,” offering insight into how her personal experiences have enriched her professional empathy and understanding.

Outside of her professional life, Fambie draws strength from her support system, including her parents and roommates, who have been instrumental in her journey. She highlighted the endless love and support from both her mom and dad and the high value she places on their perspectives. Outside of the family, Fambie’s life is enhanced by her roommates, Erica and Salome, whose driven, sweet, and authentic personalities motivate her every day. “I’ve been really blessed to have people that live with me that are so amazing. I can’t imagine my life without my girlfriends,” recognizing the significant influence these friendships have

had on her personal and professional life. Adding to this personal circle of inspiration is her mentor, Phil, whose extraordinary stories, skills, and guidance in the intricate art of body modification, including suturing, have been pivotal in Fambie’s growth as a piercer.

Fambie’s innovative approach to piercing was spectacularly showcased in a piercing runway show, a concept that brought together models adorned with multiple piercings in a celebration of body art and community. The event was not only a technical achievement but also an emotional milestone for Fambie, proving the power of shared artistic vision and collaboration. Fambie’s reflections on the experience underscore the intense pressure and responsibility she felt, “throughout the day, I don’t think I had ever been under so much stress. The main thing I tried to be mindful of is you are the glue. You are the mold and everything crumbles if you fall apart. Once all the models were ready, I couldn’t believe it. It was unreal. After the last model walked, I definitely cried. It was so cool, so special.” Her words paint a vivid picture of the event’s profound impact, both on her and the participants, marking a significant moment in the celebration of body art.

Looking ahead, Fambie is excited about exploring new avenues within body modification, “my next big step is probably going to be subdermal implants,” a modification to the body that is placed beneath the skin, allowing the implant to heal and produce an elevated design, “it’s mind-blowing to me,” she adds. Nevertheless, she is steadfast in her desire to use body piercings as a means of social and personal expression, always looking to break expectations and embrace uniqueness.

For aspiring piercers and enthusiasts, Fambie’s journey underscores the importance of persistence, creativity, and the courage to follow one’s passion, even in the face of uncertainty. Her story is a testament to the idea that embracing one’s unique path, with all its twists and turns, can lead to unexpected and rewarding destinations. “Everyone’s journey is different. A no is never the end of the journey, they’re all the more a reminder of how badly you want something.” In her own words, Fambie captures the optimistic attitude of what lies ahead and the potential of the future as she looks forward with excitement: “I have a whole bunch more in store. 2024 is really my year. I hope I can continue coming across amazing people and to continue having unimaginably amazing experiences.” This expression of her excitement for the

future also demonstrates her dedication to innovation, community, and art. Fambie’s story serves as a tribute to the transformational power of passion and perseverance, reminding us all that the canvas of human experience is boundless, and the potential for growth and discovery is infinite.

Jessica Meiko Foreman is a 23-year-old Japanese-American Fashion Designer from Northern Virginia. She is currently based in Richmond, Virginia — a place where countless legendary, successful fashion careers are born. She spent her college years at VCU pursuing her true calling, surrounded by like-minded individuals with unlimited creative ambitions. Her award-winning futuristic take on streetwear, outerwear, and more have graced runways. Outside of her own brand, Meiko has played a vital part in assisting with Milan Fashion Week and being

involved in NYFW as a production assistant. Any successful Fashion Designer understands this way of life — inspiration is everywhere & experience is your best teacher. Though Meiko holds many accomplishments, this is only the beginning of her eternal trailblazing era.

Creativity has never been a stranger to Meiko, it has always been a piece of her. Before fashion, she had a deep passion for journalism. In a 2018 interview for her first-ever debut collection, “TRAP’D” — a

vision FREE’D by imagination, she expressed her aspirations for Fashion Journalism. Her first-ever design was a part of said project: a six-piece collection made of super basic silhouettes. Once it all came together, she realized she wanted to focus on fashion forever. She was always certain of one thing: the love of creation using her hands. Making nothing into something. To be more specific, hand sewing, hand embroidery, hand beading, and the incorporation of recycled hardware & textiles. A true artist sees the beauty in everything and simply enhances it.

Among many of Meiko’s specialties, using unconventional fabrics and hardware sets her apart from the rest. Her mind-bending, escapism motifs are displayed through her clothing using unique fabrics and textiles such as Nylons, Neoprene, Recycled Garment Bags, Recycled Circuit Boards, PVC Cable, and Chicken Wire, to name a few. She revealed that in the designing process, finding the right fabrics can be the hardest part.

Her favorite experience in buying fabric would be when she lived in Italy for 6 months.

She spent her stay residing in Florence and took the train to Prato. From Meiko’s point of view, this charming city was basically in the middle of nowhere and comparatively a video game map! Prato’s economy is solely textile-based and is known for being the largest textile district in all of Europe. Though this ghost town may be overlooked by many, it is home to unknown treasures and factories — typically, “the road less traveled.”

It’s safe to say true fashion design icons have taken this road! The warehouses were loaded with stellar fabrics that could be easily bartered for. With endless options, deals were finessed left and right. Many big brands are known to source their products from places in Italy, like Prato. Meiko was initially in Italy for school and stumbled upon opportunities to get her foot in the door of Milan Fashion Week.

She had a mission in mind, with determination, drive, and passion — she was ready to achieve whatever her heart desired. She cold-emailed approximately 40 different brands that were to be featured in MFW.

Meiko let them know she could be of any assistance. By doing so, she had the experience of a lifetime working with one of her biggest fashion inspirations: “ANNAKIKI.” She is a Chinese designer who is very Meiko-esque. They see the Fashion World through a similar lens while being inclusive of their own brands. Working alongside Annakiki, she gained much insight into what goes into a runway on a much larger, global scale. Experiences like these make her the young legend she is. Meiko didn’t stop there, she then brought her talents to the world-renowned New York Fashion Week.

During NYFW, she worked as a production assistant, helping more with backstage needs and having a front-row seat to the chaotic movie that is… NYFW! Everyone was running around, screaming at each other in the name of fashion. The thrill of it all is truly remarkable. Thanks to NYFW, she was able to meet iconic designers and amazing people whom she calls her friends to this day. The next time around she aspires to return in a different position, none other than a Designer for her own company! Meiko even has experience working in a bridal shop and says having a creative team will always be important for any successful endeavor. Naturally, she shines in all sectors of the industry. To continue getting her brand out there, her live television debut took place on The Tamron Hall Show.

Meiko ranked this experience as the “coolest of the year.” Leading up to the episode airing, she was in contact with producers every day, making a montage of her accomplishments and pieces she had worked on for models to wear on the show. She also custom made something for Tamron Hall to wear as well.

Being in front of a live studio audience was surreal for her first time, but this definitely won’t be her last. Her styles have rocked DC and the RVA runways, a place where her creativity first started to grow and continues to blossom.

A lot of thought goes behind every project, as fashion is as deep as the ocean. Meiko’s brand theme aims to capture the wearer as “the protagonist of your own story.” The projects are mainly unisex, meaning anyone can put on Meiko. When you are ever wearing Meiko, you are nothing short of invincible. Confidence in an outfit will always shine through.

A consistent trend in fashion has been graphic messages printed on clothes. Simple words are turned into art, and meaningful messages transform into grail pieces. She plans to produce a collection showcasing being the “main character of your own life.

Her main inspirations come from Annakiki, Yohji Yamamoto, her Japanese culture, and a motto she lives by: “Your Comfort Zone Will Kill You.” Having lively motifs within clothing is an inspiration within itself. The fabrics start to speak to you. Aside from her Runway designs, she is introducing limited edition T-shirts in her “MEIKO SZN 0” collection. The send-off to her next project from the timeless “Into the Matrix” 2023 collection.

Some style advice from Meiko for those who struggle with putting that fit on … “You can never go wrong with Black, simple silhouettes, a really nice basic tee, wide-leg pants, and a trench coat!” Whatever she chooses to make, she maintains her “Meiko effect.” If she were to ever design a wedding dress, she would have an unconventional take of course, staying true to her brand. She would fuse formal wear with outerwear — streetwear specifically. She would add a lot of volume to it & make it re-wearable, to be casual yet allow you to relive a special moment on multiple occasions. We can expect a good amount of silver hardware and the incorporation of asymmetrical details. Not your traditional wedding dress, but much better.

The most intricate piece she has sewn to date would be her leather, hand-embroidered trench coat — using over 2,000 beads. She described her puffer vest as a puzzle, and man, did that puzzle come out spectacular! She emphasizes that although the process may be strenuous, you must trust the process at all costs. The long weeks and nights before a runway show, never-ending hours of sketching, sewing, and making products come to life, offer many times to give up.

The power that comes from following through with an idea that was once an imagination is astronomical. Anyone in the fashion and creative world understands this wholeheartedly. We must always give flowers to those who inspire others through these mediums, those who are true to this, and showcase brands that embody themselves. We were all those kids before. Creatives like Meiko make it known that it can be hard, but it is indeed an inexplicable beauty beyond the headaches.

“Go for yours, because dreams come true.” [Slick

Rick, 1988]

Meiko is a young, influential Asian fashion designer from the DMV. She represents Northern Virginia alongside many Asian greats, a notable icon being VandyThePink. The current artistic awakening in the DMV is one for the books. In the future, she plans to up her brand while gaining more exposure to different parts of the World. Her dream collab would be with Balenciaga and different products outside of Fashion, like her favorite energy drink company, Celcius. The DMV and beyond wait patiently for all the wonders she has to offer the world. Her futuristic brand has a nostalgic way of making us feel like we are right where we need to be. As the present is the past and the future is now, Meiko is here to stay and drip us down!

Meiko would like to give a huge thanks to her collaborators and constant support system: Kevin Park, Forest Brooks Veerhoff, Ray Wondracek, and Alex Britto.

WEST HOUR

A NEW WEST COAST SENSATION TH4 COAST

4th Hour is a West Coast Asian rap group that will have you hooked and begging for more. Working with one of my favorite music groups of all time was my highest honor. From cadences, different vocal personalities, and the versatility of beats, every song channels the perfect summertime vibe — there is nothing they can’t do. Being obsessed ever since I stumbled upon their music, I took a deep dive into how they met, when they started, and how everything came about. Entering the music game between ages 16 and 17, it was made known that their talents had to be revealed sooner than later.

From Clothing Brand To Music Group .......The

Birth of

What started as a clothing brand name became the official title of the renowned music group. With the 4 of them, it only made sense. 4th Hour members include S2J, Kev November, 310Jay, and AVI. DJ KZY is the group’s designated DJ and has appeared on a few 4th Hour tracks. Each

artist brings their flow to each song, making every piece of music a certified hit. What feels like an overnight sensation was destiny in the making for years. This group of friends had known each other since adolescence. Everyone grew up and currently resides in Carson, California. Kev November met KZY in elementary school and S2J, 310Jay, and AVI in middle school. Everyone’s bond solidified at the Academy of Medical Arts in high school. They ran Carson High School! KZY was class president, and the group represented the yearbook club for years. AVI, being a year older than his friends, was able to fully connect with everyone on the quintessential Big Bear Cabin trip.

We owe it to Kev vember for forming this group. Since he had already made beats and attempted to make a few tracks with S2J and 310Jay, he decided to bring all his equipment to the cabin trip for fun. DJ KZY fully organized the trip — little did they know this would change the trajectory of their lives forever. The three friends started recording like usual and then suggested that AVI jump on a song since his brother (KAYPEE) was already a successful rapper. In just one take, AVI was a natural-born lyricist. From then on, music was being made as often as time allowed. The Big Bear trip gave us the self-titled “4th Hour” EP. “BBY SCAMMER” was the first song created by the group. The beat, adlibs, and vocals make this EP a West Side Sensation. This initial “4th Hour” collection of songs laid the groundwork for the rest of the coming vibes. Since its release in 2021, 4th Hour shows us that you no longer need to search high and low for music that tickles your senses.

The New West Coast Tape &Future Projects

Before the release of B&B2, the group formed a collaborative album alongside other artists on the rise titled “The New West Coast Tape,” featuring TMG.Ju, Bonnie.D, Hypecmoney, IamLilCREEDTAVO, Traakoo, and more. Together, they

FLAV o RS

Every moment leading up to this bands connection with each other and their rhythm was solidified. From then on, the crew recorded at Kev’s and Jerome’s (310Jay) houses. Six months later, their first-ever album, “Flavors,” was released. Fully recorded at Jerome’s home, each song represents a “flavor.” This is a concept they had not seen from anyone before, and to their advantage, nobody does the unthinkable like them! Hits like “Cherry, French Vanilla, and Gelato” were products of this masterpiece.

The passion felt from this album makes it almost edible

2022 consisted of singles after singles — 4th Hour made “Bloom, Nina/Tina, Tele, Sweet Talk, HMU,” and more leading up to the EP I had first discovered them from — “Blunts & Bottles.” Four songs were all needed to sell anyone booking a one-way flight to California. “Switch, Slow Motion, Boujee Slide, and Sundress” make up this no-skip EP. Nothing says West Coast like these sounds. This work of art immediately takes you to a house party in Cali. It’s cold out, but you feel as warm as ever. You used to feel regular, but now you’re untouchable You used to have no game, and suddenly, these four guys have you walking around surrounded by beautiful girls. You’re unstoppable. Nothing will be the same after you experience “Blunts and Bottles”

call themselves “The New West Coast.” 4th Hour will also appear on the official “DO WHAT I WANT SOUNDTRACK,” produced by JFERRER & LOKO MOKO. DWIW’s vision is to empower emerging artists and creatives, making 4th Hour the perfect pick for them.

&Beyond..

The heavy traction and appraisal from Blunts & Bottles was followed by music videos, yearly concert events by the self-managed team, frequent music drops, and simply doing everything to give the fans what they want while staying true to their sound. In February of 2023, the crew of lovers gifted us “4 Luv” right before Valentine’s Day. This seductive, harmonious EP was the perfect box of chocolates for all lovers. They continued the EP movement with “PRE GAME” which was released at the start of the 2023 Summer, along with the single: “Splash,” ensuring everyone’s summertime functions are turned all the way up! They ended the season in the most classic 4th Hour fashion and blessed us with “Blunts & Bottles 2.” The highly acclaimed sequel was everything we could’ve hoped for. The continuation of the B&B saga was composed of enhanced vibes inspired by the original project, along with six additional songs and features from distinguished West Coast artists such as Hypecmoney and Lil Keith.

His father moved to the United States during high school, and his mother followed during her college years.

The story of Orange Peel began in Dan's home basement in Herndon, Virginia, when he was just 25 years old. In this humble setting, he taught himself the intricacies of clothing production, management, and photography. Re ecting on this period, Dan shared, "This process required so much patience, which I didn't have, but I learned that starting your own business will require you to go against your own comfort zone."

Dan's vision for Orange Peel was further fueled by the unwavering support of his close friends, who saw his potential and encouraged him to pursue his dream.

Orange Peel has been more than just a clothing brand; it represents a philosophy of breaking free from societal labels and norms. The brand promotes curiosity, self-discovery, and nding one's unique place in the world. Dan eloquently said, "Orange Peel is about peeling back the layers. You'll nd your own avors that you have to ooer to the world."

Interestingly, Orange Peel began as a sock company. Dan believed the streetwear market lacked distinctive socks to tell a story. He saw socks as a unique piece of attire that could showcase one's personality and serve as a great conversation starter. The initial product line featured four socks, each with its own narrative. "Tribe" encouraged nding communities where one is cherished, "Nautical" celebrated embracing challenges and thriving in diOcult situations, "Future Funk" was about bonding and navigating life's ups and downs, and "Digital Forest" highlighted stoicism amidst the noise of the digital world.

Mariem Taalba

Hiya, the name’s Mariem. I’d like to think of myself as a visionary photographer who transcends the boundaries of traditional photography, delving deep into the realm of emotions and soul connections. With my camera in hand and an eye for the extraordinary, I craft images that are not just seen but profoundly felt.

I believe Photography is more than a medium—it's a channel for connection. Every shot is a testament to the intricate web of emotions that define our lives, a bridge between

the past, present, and future, allowing viewers to experience and feel the moment as if it were their own. A photograph has the power to evoke empathy, stir memories, and inspire introspection, creating a lasting impact that transcends the frame.

Driven by a passion for experimentation, I explore the interplay of light, shadow, and texture to create evocative visual narratives. Each photograph is a journey into the depths of human experience, capturing fleeting moments that resonate with timeless beauty and raw emotion. Through innovative techniques and a keen sense of intuition, I transform the ordinary into the extraordinary, revealing the unseen and the unsaid.

From intimate portraits to abstract compositions, my portfolio is a testament to the power of experimentation and emotional depth. Each image invites the viewer to pause, reflect, and connect with the subject's essence, offering a glimpse into the soul of the moment.

I will continue to push the boundaries of artistic expression, constantly evolving and redefining what it means to capture the essence of human experience through the lens. Whether working with emotions or exploring absurdity, my work celebrates life's most profound and passing moments.

where every photograph is an invitation to see the world through the eyes of the heart.
