Our Campaign for a New Center

Le Centre d’Art is a Haitian treasure and needs our support DR. RICHARD KURIN Distinguished Scholar and Ambassador at Large, Smithsonian Institution.

Art has long been a means for Haitians to turn their experiences into something beautiful, intriguing and inspirational. It represents the creativity of a people who have historically fought for freedom and whose ongoing resilience has drawn universal admiration.

For decades the Centre d’ Art has been at the heart of Haitian artistic achievement, supporting artists, encouraging art-making, and educating and informing the broader community. It has provided a hopeful and intriguing window into and beyond Haiti for millions.

The 2010 earthquake brought Le Centre d’Art’s importance home to me. I saw its buildings in ruins. Thanks to the brave action of artists, board members and staff, most of its collection was quickly rescued, but then faced the danger of deteriorating. As Under Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, I called upon my museum colleagues and on conservators and organizations from around the world to work with our Haitian colleagues and save the collection. Together, we did, and since then, with tremendous, dedicated efforts by many Le Centre d’Art has been revitalized.

Now, Le Centre d’Art rightfully seeks to flourish. Like all cultural institutions it needs financial support to accomplish its mission. It is my honor to join its campaign to raise $5 million. The funds are needed for Le Centre d’Art’s new home, for exhibitions and support for artists, for training and educational programs, and for providing a vibrant, robust arts’ scene that contributes to the quality of Haiti’s civic life.

Many of us have already made commitments for the support of Le Centre d’Art. Every dollar, every euro, every gourd matters, because a stronger Centre d’Art makes all of us better — as human beings, as champions of Haiti, and as appreciators of its magnificent visual arts.

Haitian art has had its moments of epiphany. The creation of the Centre d'Art was one of them. In 1944, the country was only ten years into recovering from the American military occupation, and the “indigenist” movement, which was a reaction to it, still largely permeated literary and artistic production. For a whole spectrum of intellectuals and artists, it meant taking a stand against the denigration and racism of which Haiti was constantly the object, and at the same time to enhance popular culture by highlighting its African roots, particularly through vodou, and to add to it the idea of freedom as it is inscribed in our national history, thus conferring on this culture a unique character of authenticity.

A whole mystique was created around the Centre d'Art since its first great exhibition of Cuban painters in 1945. That same year, André Breton and Wifredo Lam visited Haiti and the Centre d'Art, at a time when a socio-political movement involving university students contributed greatly to the fall of the then president. Should we, as some have, see relations of cause and effect, between this intellectual and political effervescence on the one hand, and the emergence of remarkable and unlikely painters to whom will be attached the label of "naive art" on the other hand?

Nothing is less sure. But the aesthetic form sometimes qualified as “naïve”, or as “primitive”, sometimes as “popular”, will make date. Thanks to our art historians, particularly Michel-Philippe Lerebours and Carlo Avierl Célius, we have an account of this construction that will serve as a standard for the promotion of Haitian art beyond borders. It remains obvious that the Haitian production in the field of visual arts can absolutely not be reduced to a simplistic label.

A double misfortune occurred in 2010. The Centre d'Art building on rue Roy was destroyed by the earthquake and a few weeks later we learned of the death of its longtime director. But the Centre d'Art did not die. It survived the disaster thanks to the diligence, generosity, and fervor rallied for the recovery of its rich collections and archives. Ten years later, in its temporary premises, the Centre d'Art welcomes, exhibits, trains, promotes, educates, amazes. As at the time of its launch, a combination of national and international factors and actors continue to play a role in its rebirth. May they continue to deploy so that in the coming years, the Centre d'Art will settle in its newly restored premises and participate fully in the artistic creation of Haiti and in what it has to offer the world.

The Centre d'Art will then have its new moment of epiphany.

Our Campaign for a New Center

The Centre d'Art is launching a fundraising campaign to rebuild its premises destroyed during the 2010 earthquake and to support Haitian artistic creation.

The success of this campaign will ensure the future of a Haitian institution uniquely renowned for its artistic heritage and its innovative and inclusive programming. Our ambition is to install the Centre d'Art in new premises designed around a rereading and enhancement of the heritage architecture of the Maison Ethéard-Larsen.

It is urgent for the Centre d'Art to have a new infrastructure by 2025. This installation will allow the preservation of a collection of more than 5,000 works of art and archives (classified as Caribbean heritage

by UNESCO), witnesses of the institution's journey since its foundation in 1944; but also, to host in appropriate spaces art courses and workshops for professionals and beginners.

By supporting the Centre d'Art, you contribute to the preservation of a precious cultural heritage, but also to the diffusion of Haitian artistic creation in Haiti and throughout the world.

The future of Haitian art depends on the leadership and engagement of all those who value Haitian art.

Move Le Centre d'Art to a Location Commensurate with Its Vocation: the Ethéard-Larsen House

The Center is housed under several precarious open shelters, which do not have the capacity to fully protect it from Haiti’s tropical climate. The infrastructure of these shelters is in a state of disrepair, which is dangerous for the general public and could lead to the deterioration of the Center’s collection.

TOMORROW

By 2022, donations from this campaign will make it possible for the Center to move to the heart of Port-au-Prince. The historic 1920’s Ethéard-Larsen House sits on a half-acre plot and – once renovated – will house the Center. The elegant gingerbread-style house is an icon of Haitian architecture and a heritage site – one of several houses in Port-au-Prince included on the World Monuments Fund watchlist.

– This new heritage site will be the cornerstone of the Center’s revitalization, offering a space for the Center’s exhibits, conservation efforts, education programs, archival activities, and digital arts. The space will also offer the Center’s artists a dedicated space to create, train, and perfect their techniques, as well as a gallery where they can sell and promote their artwork.

Our priority: Acquire $ 11 650 000 to purchase and renovate this historic house, which we envision as an architectural emblem of Porte-au-Prince’s identity – embodying the city’s rich past and deep resilience in the wake of crisis.

Maintain, Enhance, and Enrich the Center’s Collection

Despite the devastation caused by the 2010 earthquake, the Center was able to recover 5,000 pieces of artwork and 3,000 archives. This collection represents the memory of the institution since 1944, tracing the evolution of a pivotal period in Haitian art history. The collection is now a powerful link between the past and future of Haitian visual arts.

As a touchstone for Haitian art, the Center holds invaluable expertise in conservation. We hope to maximize the potential of this expertise through our fundraising efforts by: • Restoring certain masterpieces in our collection before making them accessible to the general public via exhibits in Haiti and abroad.

• Maintaining the collection in excellent condition and digitizing materials to make content accessible online.

• Acquiring new artwork from contemporary and historically significant artists, which will allow the Center to grow its collection while maintaining its role as a leader in promoting diverse, high-quality art.

• Building the Center’s capacity in conservation, with support from and in collaboration with Haitian cultural institutions and institutions abroad that house Haitian art.

Provide Access to Quality Education, Art, and Heritage

Since its foundation, the Center has operated on both artistic and social grounds, offering a uniquely accessible space for seasoned and budding artists alike. Our values are centered on freedom and inclusion, whereby art and culture can represent powerful levers for social cohesion, generate a sense of pride in being Haitian, and offer the potential for individuals to reinvent themselves. We believe that art and its practices are critical to this social transformation. This is why we focus on accessibility for all – particularly for young people – so we can open doors to learning opportunities that can inform understanding of Haitian culture and beyond.

We have all been deeply affected by the earthquake that struck Haiti in 2010, which made Haitian society even more vulnerable. The Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation — which places social transformation in the field of the arts at the heart of its work — has supported the revival of the Center and the conservation of its unique heritage since 2011.

Faced with the ongoing upheavals affecting the world, we are convinced that art and artistic practices make it possible to create meaning and social bonds, to imagine other possible worlds, and to allow people to flourish while developing critical outlooks.

The Fundraising Campaign

The fundraising campaign is part of an organization that upholds clear standards and guidelines in the allocation of funds to meet the needs of the Center.

This organization comprises three structures to ensure full transparency and proper management of funds. With a presence in Haiti, the United States, and France, these structures oversee the collection of donations, advised by the board of directors and executive management of Le Centre d'Art. The structures ensure rigorous management and proper allocation of all donations.

IN HAITI

Le Centre d'Art has been a Haitian public institution since 1947. As such, donations made to the Center are tax-deductible for tax residents (per articles 15 and 24 of the Decree of September 29, 2005 on income tax).

IN THE UNITED STATES

Ayiti Demen is a 501(c)3 New York based public charity that supports communities and programs in Haiti, and acts as the U.S. fiscal sponsor for Le Centre d'Art of Haiti.

Ayiti Demen has screened and qualified Le Centre d'Art to ensure that it meets the equivalency test for non-profits in the US. All donations made in the U.S to Le Centre d'Art via Ayiti Demen are tax deductible to the extent allowable by the law and are subject to any legal limitations that might apply.

Le Centre d'Art is also eligible to receive donations through the Charities Aid Foundation of America.

IN FRANCE

La Fondation pour le Rayonnement de l’Art Haïtien, under the aegis of the Fondation de France, promotes Haitian artistic heritage by supporting contemporary art and reviving Le Centre d'Art of Port-au-Prince. Donations to la Fondation pour le Rayonnement de l’Art Haïtien are deductible from income tax, real estate wealth tax, and corporate tax (per article 238 bis of France’s general tax code).

After the original Center was destroyed in 2010 and following a period of revival under temporary shelters for four years, the Center is being reborn in an iconic gingerbread-style house in the heart of Port-au-Prince.

In recognition of our donors’ generosity, the Center offers a naming program so that donors can have the opportunity to name specific spaces in the new Ethéard-Larsen House.
