Canada’s first airmail flight The noise complaints resulting from recent changes to aircraft flight paths for Pearson International Airport have reminded me that one of Canada’s first airfields was located right here in Leaside.

Edith Davies, a Leasider who grew up in Scarborough, wrote to me to say that when she was a little girl “every time an aeroplane passed over my mother would inform us that it was from Leaside Airport. I remember a balloon falling to the ground, maybe 1918. The balloon was from the Leaside Airport, presumably.

Leaside was one of five aerodromes constructed by the Royal Flying Corp Canada in 1917 during World War I. The Leaside air base comprised 222 acres east of Laird.

By ALLAN WILLIAMS When the expanded Leaside Gardens opens this fall, the original ice surface will be known thereafter as the Bert F. Grant Rink in recognition of the $250,000 legacy gift made by his three children in his honour.

Who was Bert F. Grant?

He was president and later chairman of what is today known as the Crestview Group of Companies. In the early 1950s, as Lawrence Construction, this company built the Crestview apartments and the homes on both sides of Leacrest Rd., the long parcel of land in South Leaside on the brow of the Don Valley, south of Moore between Pottery Rd. and backing on to the Leaside Gardens arena property.

The company was founded by his father, Bert H. Grant, who emigrated from England in 1909 and began building houses in the Pape and Danforth area in the 1920s. He also built the Du Maurier apartments and duplexes at the north east corner

BERT F. GRANT: 1921 - 2008 His three children, Suzanne Robb, Dianne Grant-Koch, and Bert A. Grant presented a cheque for $250,000 to the Leaside Arena Expansion Committee at the groundbreaking ceremony last June.

Bert A.’s son Bert C. is vice-president of Crestview and the fourth Bert Grant to be involved in the family business.

The second rink, which is now taking shape next to the original Leaside Gardens, has yet to be named. Anyone interested in having the new rink named for a company or as a legacy to honour a family member should contact the expansion committee. n

Bert F. Grant was born in 1921 and, after serving as a wireless operator with the RCAF during World War II, joined the family business in 1946.

Starting in 1950 he acted as site foreman on the Leacrest Rd. development, which eventually grew to include the 22 two-storey apartment buildings of eight to 10 units each near Mallory Cres. (which the company still owns) and all the homes on both sides of Leacrest between the apartments and the arena property.

The project was completed in 1952, the same year as the arena that will now bear his name.

Later that year he was elected president of the Toronto Home Builders Association. He guided his company through a period of expansion in the 1970s and ’80s when they built or acquired additional residential and commercial properties in the Leaside area and around the GTA, as well as in Barrie, Port Carling and Peterborough.

In 1986 he redeveloped the south east corner of Eglinton and Mt. Pleasant as the building that today is well-known as the home of WWF Canada and the Granite Brewery.

Bert F. Grant continued to be active in the company until his death in 2008.

Do you know the right date?

I always wait for a quiet time to enjoy Leaside Life, therefore it has taken me ages to read the December issue.

The article on our growing flock of food stores was a good read until I got to the line that said the Loblaws at Moore and Bayview opened in 1963. I believe that this date is not correct.

Do I know the correct year? No, but if your readers follow my totally unscientific reasoning one of them may have the answer.

When the store was very new it had a feature that a preteen rock ‘n’ roll fan like me enjoyed. The magazine area sold records. I bought Purple People Eater by Sheb Wooley and Indian Giver by Tony Perkins (1958).

In grades 5 and 6 (1956-7) my BFF was a Leaside Lions majorette. I used to watch them practice on Sundays in the parking lot of Loblaws. Of course the store was closed on the Sabbath!

At that time Thursday was the big grocery shopping night. It was also the night for my fav TV show, Zorro (at 8 p.m., brought to you by 7 Up). It

Mother always came home during Zorro. Begging to be allowed to wait until Zorro was over never worked.

Zorro was aired from 1957 to 1959. Now I can watch the second half of all those episodes on You Tube!

The Bayview Extension, completed in 1959, curves abruptly as it comes out of the Don Valley to get around the Loblaws that got there first. The road construction was a life event for me as I had to switch from Bennington Heights to Rolph Road. I started grade 7 at Rolph in 1958. I was new and so was our teacher, Mr. Howard Patterson.

At some point in those years a female employee balanced on a beam in the storage attic of Loblaws, stepped off onto the acoustic tile and fell through. She was hanging by her armpits with her panty girdle fully exposed over the coffee bar below.

All females wore that wretched

garment in the ‘50s, even a skinny girl like me. I should have had suspenders to keep it in place. What year did we stop wearing panty girdles? I do not remember but one of your readers may be able to date the ceiling incident.

My sister was an “Oops” baby born in 1960. When she was 2-plus she went for a walk from our house into the busy parking lot of Loblaws, a distance of about two blocks. The boy next door, who was my age,16, calmly told me that he had just seen her there wandering between the cars.

That was the day I learned that under duress I was capable of running at tremendous speed. I found her talking to an elderly and very concerned gentleman.

She cut a dashing figure in a ruffled gingham sunsuit over a bulging Pamper. She had the matching gingham bonnet on backwards, making her look like a bizarre stormtrooper.

This was in 1962.

I hope my research enables someone to provide the correct date for the opening of Loblaws. The store has been an important part of local history.

I totally agree with Mr. Beswick about the traffic restrictions in parts of Leaside.

It's totally unfair the way, for example, that North Leaside is closed for traffic on the busiest hours while some of us have to bear the traffic on their behalf.

Hardly equal, hardly democratic.

It's time that this type of one-sided protectionism is abolished. Perhaps I can pay less taxes because I have less "annoyance" protection?

Ulla Nystrom, Sutherland Dr. Ten planes flew overhead when I wrote this letter recently. The average frequency is six flights in 15 minutes.

Sometimes a second flight comes while the noise from the first one is still heard. Times include well after midnight and before 5 a.m.

The noise is worse over northwest Leaside especially for those with gardens, decks, bedrooms and living rooms facing west. The area is more exposed and directly under where the planes turn north.

It is otherwise a quieter area with

little other background noise.

The noise has a significant negative psychological effect on many people.

Just inside the deck doors in my house I have to use noise cancelling head phones to hear my TV or stereo.

We have noise from helicopters in and out of Sunnybrook Hospital.

We accept this as a known factor when we chose to live in this area.

Real estate agents will have to disclose the fact that there is frequent aircraft noise in the area. This will devalue our properties.

Knowing this wasn’t Lorna’s intent, I do worry that someone might read the article and believe that our local churches are more concerned about getting money for themselves than giving to others less fortunate.

St. Augustine’s, whose Christmas bazaar proceeds went entirely towards our own budget, might seem to be like such a parish.

defensive clergy must run a close fourth.)

Nevertheless, I want to assure Lorna’s readers that St. Augustine’s, as all our churches, is deeply concerned about social injustice and poverty. In the past year, we’ve contributed to Amnesty International, the Donaldson Trust, Loft Community Services, All Saints Community Centre, Moorelands Camp, Flemingdon Park Ministry, and the Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund (the Anglican equivalent of World Vision).

Our members are active volunteers in the community (one, for example, delivers bread donated by Metro to the Flemingdon Park Food Bank every week, year round). The Church of the Transfiguration, St. Cuthbert’s and St. Augustine’s hold an annual dinner together to raise outreach funds—this year for l’Arche, and last year for Moorelands.

All our churches contribute in so many ways to the local community and beyond. We’re delighted to do it, and we believe it's our calling.

Its nine hangers, which were constructed in a mere seven weeks, were paid for entirely by the British government. It was home base for three squadrons of 18 aircraft each.

The east-west runway was 2,640 feet long while the north-south runway was 1,800 feet long.

There was no Leaside bridge at the time, so to supply the airfield a concrete road, called Government Rd., was constructed to carry supply trucks from Yonge St. to the airfield.

Today we know Government Rd. as Merton, McRae and Wicksteed.

Government Rd. served another purpose as well. Before it was constructed most of the Canada Wire and Cable employees had to travel to work from Toronto by train. After it was built they could ride to work along Government Rd. on Leaside’s first bus line. Besides paying for the airfield, the Brits purchased and paid for the aircraft as well. They were American built Curtiss JN-4s, called flying Jennies.

here. During the winter of 1917-18 skis were attached to the aircraft and thus Leaside pilots became the pioneers of winter weather flying.

Of course Leaside is also famous for the first official air mail flight in Canada when, on June 24, 1918, Captain Brian Peck flew a bag of mail from Montreal to Leaside after stopping to refuel in Kingston and Deseronto.

Subsequently, Leaside became the terminal for airmail flights to Ottawa, Buffalo and Montreal.

When World War I ended Leaside became a civilian airport, federally licensed for a time to the Toronto Flying Club. As such it was the Canadian terminus for the New YorkToronto-New York air race of 1919.

Fred Bristow, whose father started the first Leaside bus line, told me that in the 1920s he watched stunt pilots walking on the wings of war surplus flying Jennies performing over the Leaside airfield as part of a barnstorming flying circus.

But just as development has recently overtaken the Downview airport, so it did with Leaside. Our airport closed in 1931, soon to become the Leaside industrial area. n

Leaside resident Rick Hutchings recently won a photo contest from Toronto Balcony Blooms, a group that inspires Toronto residents to create balcony gardens. After volunteering at Thorncliffe Park School, Hutchings received two trays of vegetable seedlings from the children. Anxious to keep the plants alive, he constructed a vertical garden on his garage door last summer, then captured the results in his winning photo.

The judges noted, “Versions of this garden will start appearing all over the place.” Not sure we’ve all got the same green thumb!

Leaside curlers also are doing well. Hats off to Ron Judge, winner of the Fairfield Marriott Challenge, who will compete in the provincial finals for the Ontario Curling Association (OCA). Toronto Star columnist, painter and author, Sonia Day, packed a room at the library, speaking at the January Garden Society meeting on Edible Gardens. She highlighted the best vegetables to plant in smaller spaces.

Watch out Leaside for those vegetable gardens next spring. Day is author of several books, including the awardwinning The Untamed Garden.

Jason Huang, manager of the new Five Guys Burgers on Laird Dr., tells where the name came from: The chain was established in the USA by a father and, you guessed it, five sons.

You may have seen them on their reality TV show, displaying to the world that doing what they do is not always a piece of (cup)cake. So that is the “curved” part of today’s “curved leafy streets” moniker. The “leafy” part was the result of a far-sighted council that purchased trees for each lot.

When the Town of Leaside was designed in 1912, little consideration was given to the old settlement roads, or the farmsteads, the original dwellings in the area.

So what pattern existed in Leaside before Todd’s plan was imposed on the landscape?

As in rural areas today, land was divided based on the lot and concession pattern. Trails connected the farmsteads to the city of Toronto to the south and west. The best known trail is Lea’s Lane which connected the Lea family farms to Yonge St. In an earlier column (September 2012) we described how the settler farm houses of James Lea (201 Sutherland), and John Edmund Lea (33 Heather Rd.) are disoriented on the lot; they were built to face onto Lea’s lane, which went over to William Lea’s octagonal farmstead, Leaside near Leaside arena. n

predates by over 40 years our neighbouring suburb of Don Mills (which displays this boast on a sign just north of Eglinton on Leslie). Leaside’s plan was ahead of its time in providing for separation of the residential areas (west of Laird) and industrial areas (east of Laird). Today we might call it a “complete community”.

The plan is a modified wavy grid, with a diagonal cutting across southwest to north-east (today it survives as McRae Dr.).

John Sewell writes in The Shape of the City, “The (Leaside) plan possesses a certain elegance. A diagonal road slices the site and is the location for non-residential uses including administrative buildings, offices, and shops. Residential streets are set on a nicely modified grid, with boulevards between the roadway

What is the essence of Leaside character? Many would say it is the curved leafy streets (regular readers know that this column is mostly about the place, not the people!).

In November’s column we wrote about Parkhurst Blvd. and how the streetscape is more than the individual houses on a block; so the character is also dependent on the design pattern and arrangement of the streets themselves.

It can be argued that the character of Leaside was pre-determined over 100 years ago, by a Montreal landscape architect called Frederick Todd. Todd was hired by the Canadian Northern Railway to lay out a town so that lots could be sold to raise money to pay for the the company’s expansion, including new maintenance facilities in Leaside.

(There is a large story here about Leaside as a railway town that we will come back to later this spring.)

Todd’s plan for Leaside is a departure from the earlier military grid pattern of development in Ontario.

The Bayview merchants seem ambivalent Recently I did a quick walk up and down Bayview. I counted a total of 121 storefront businesses from Parkhurst on the north to Davisville on the south.

Of those stores, 44, or a little more than one-third, are food-related. Between Manor Rd. and Belsize on the west side, there are no fewer than 17 establishments where you can enjoy some type of sit-down meal.

When Landmark Oriental Kitchen & Bar held its grand opening this past Oct. 14 it was the eighth Asian restaurant to set up shop on Bayview. This solitary event got me thinking about what is happening to Bayview.

Yes, clustering is commonplace in cities around the world, especially with restaurants, but it made me think that except for the opening of De La Mer Fresh Fish Market in August 2009, about when I moved to Leaside, there hasn’t been a store that truly filled a need. Sure, we've now got multiple gelato and frozen yogurt shops, but you could hardly call them essential.

I spoke to several merchants on Bayview and was a little surprised at how ambivalent they were towards what's happening on the street. I had a hard time getting a sense of their true feelings. With the exception of the Badali brothers, everyone I talked to didn't seem overly concerned, which is strange, because Bayview's getting hit from all directions business wise.

I found that few had concrete ideas on how to keep Bayview competitive. They have a much easier time articulating what they're against than what they're for.

They were quick to voice displeasure over a particular parking enforcement officer (PEO) who seems to take great pride in turning people off. I've seen him in action; he's ruthless.

another $33.6 million in revenue from on-street meters. New York City will make approximately $190 million in 2012 from meters and another $600 million from parking enforcement.

It costs $2.25 per hour to park on Bayview. To park in Brooklyn (outside the New York City core, like Leaside) costs $1 per hour at a meter and is free on Sundays.

Reasonable meter rates along with non-Gestapo PEOs would go a long way to making the shopping experience on Bayview more enjoyable.

Several jurisdictions in North America are experimenting with targeted parking tag enforcement where the fees generated by a specific commercial area are reinvested in that same area. Landlords and tenants would greatly benefit.

Perhaps some of these dollars could go to a public-private partnership that funds a portion of the rent in the first couple of years for prospective independent storeowners.

The other hot button issue is rent. With the going rate for storefront leases on Bayview said to be almost double what they're asking on Mt. Pleasant Rd., the only businesses that realistically survive are restaurants with high margins on booze/coffee or chain-operated stores like Shoppers Drug Mart, which is accustomed to paying nosebleed rents. That doesn't leave much room for the independent specialty shop.

The goal of this article was to come up with some ideas about the type of store missing from Bayview that would help drive traffic there.

However, it's become clear that what's really missing is a concise vision for the future.

BIAs (business improvement areas) have been proposed in the past but nothing ever comes of it.

Biggest project in our history

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the biggest community project currently under way in the city and â&#x20AC;&#x201C; at a contract price in excess of $11 million â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the biggest in Leasideâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s history.

And now that the structural steel is going up, Leaside residents are beginning to see the results of years of dreaming and planning and local fundraising. We are on the verge of having an NHL-size rink added to the Leaside Memorial Community Gardens arena.

What is the project's current status?

Last July the City of Toronto issued an $11,050,000 contract to Aquicon Construction for a new 3,200 square metre (34,432 square foot) addition to the existing arena, comprised of: new main entrance and lobby; new rink and spectator seating area; lobby and public washroom; six new dressing rooms; offices and meeting room; provisions for future pro shop and snack bar; mechanical and ancillary spaces; expanded parking for over 250 vehicles.

About $3.3 million worth of work was completed by the end of 2012, representing approximately 30 percent of the total project value.

This work included: new underground site services and infrastructure (hydro, sewer and water) which turned out to be more complicated than expected; demolition of part of the existing facility; footing and foundations â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 100 percent completed; interior masonry walls PARKER, Page 19

JEANNETTE PLONKA lives in the west end of Toronto, but thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been a pull eastward to Leaside, where sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been principal of Leaside High for nine years. Previously she had been at a junior high in North York and then vice-principal at York Mills Collegiate. Her daughter had played hockey for the Leaside Girls Hockey Association at Leaside Gardens.

Since Leaside is a French immersion school, her teaching qualifications in French, as well as English, phys ed and drama, come in handy.

ROB PERRY has also been working his way east, from small towns around London where he grew up, then degrees from Windsor, Western and York, but the new principal replacing Jeffrey Crane at Rolph Road school isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t all new to Leaside. He played soccer at Talbot Park and his son played soccer at Rolph Road. He has also been nearby as a vice-principal at Thorncliffe public school, where Crane has now become principal. Perryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree is in kinesiology, he has a passion for athletics and loves hockey, hiking in the woods â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and singing.

ROSANNA LUBIANA TROPEA, in her fifth year as principal of St. Anselm, is a believer in volunteerism, for herself and her students. She has worked for such organizations as the Canadian Cancer Society and the CNIB. Her students and staff are encouraged to also get involved in charity and social justice initiatives, as well as extra-curricular activities. She has been with the TCDSB for 25 years and has worked extensively on school board committees and curriculum/writing teams. She has taught various grades, as well as special education, and served as a support teacher and teacher/librarian.

in the basement areas â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 100 percent completed; structural steel superstructure â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 25 percent completed at year end and progressing quickly.

The most dramatically visible progress will be evident over the next few months:completion of the steel superstructure; installation of the metal roof and exterior walls; exterior masonry work; glazing and exterior doors.

Then comes the less dramatic but more complex work, including: interior wall and floor construction; mechanical, refrigeration, and electrical works; new rink floor, dasher boards, and score clock; installation of equipment and fixtures; interior finishes (flooring, ceilings, interior painting and seating).

Soon after the last skater leaves the ice this spring the existing parking lot will be closed and the site will be re-graded and made ready for curbs and paving. The site will be freshly paved and landscaped by next fall.

Every effort is being made to have the new ice surface ready for the 2013 ice season. The project has had its challenges in the form of unforeseen buried site conditions, but so far the project team has been able to find workable solutions on a timely basis. n

Did you know that of the 52 ice pads in Toronto, only four of them recently have broken even or made money – and Leaside Memorial Community Gardens is one of those four? Quite an achievement!

As you know, Leaside Gardens has a board of management who hire a general manager – in this case, Henry Stachelbeck, who has been with the Gardens for 25 years. Under him are Anna Donadio, the banquet hall coordinator/staff support assistant (18 years) and three arena pool operators – Jim Swartz (30 years), Ed Newell (26 years) and Mario Zinga (23 years), along with 17 part-timers who are everything from rink guards to bartenders.

They and the Leaside Gardens board of management, under new chair, Ray White, are completely in charge of the arena and the William Lea Room, and the Leaside pool, which the city’s Parks and Recreation Department rents for their programming of the pool.

For dedicated swimmers, there has been a recent problem at the pool, with structural damage to the ceiling needing to be repaired.

Last year, the William Lea Room had 237 bookings. This winter, because of the construction of the second ice pad, it has become part of the construction site with the lobby and women’s washrooms entirely gone. Quite apart from the inconvenience there is the profit loss from rentals for this year.

The bright light is the current arena. Prime time ice is 100 percent rented for the year. Day-time ice is 82 percent rented. Leaside is in first place as the most used single pad rink in the City of Toronto. The building opens at 5:30 a.m. for the first skaters to be on the ice at 6 a.m.

The last ones are leaving around 1 a.m. The major user groups are the Leaside Hockey Association, the Leaside Skating Club and the Toronto Leaside Girls Hockey Association.

able now, and the heaters work. And yes, it really is an orange and white Zamboni.

Looking at the display cases along the wall, what should I see but a photo of John Candy wearing a Leaside Hockey Association jacket and a gladiator helmet. It turns out that Candy actually did play hockey at Leaside when he was in high school, and chose to wear his LHA jacket for this particular Saturday Night Live skit.

I really tried to figure out the significance of the hockey sweaters hanging from the ceiling – some of the names were familiar, others really not to me – P. Mahovlich, Selwood, D. Gardner, Edur, P. Gardner, McEwen, Caffery. Can you guess? Turns out all of these played in the NHL, but also played minor hockey out of Leaside.

There is still a concession for skate sharpening, but it’s run by Grant Krisman, not Peter Mahovlich Sr. The plaque in the office hallway honouring Peter eloquently says, “Every ice rink should be blessed with such a warm spirit.”

This is what is means to be a community facility. n
