If we think the pandemic has wrought havoc in our lives, how about the kids of all ages, who have had to adjust to an entirely new way of life and education?

In June, signs started popping up all over lawns in Leaside and beyond congratulating grads – a tangible sign that life does go on, and kids do move on. They are continuing to achieve, no matter what the environment.

In this issue writer Janis Fertuck features four outstanding graduates of Leaside High whose accomplishments are already extraordinary and whose futures are bright: Katerina Benevides, with an entrance scholarship to the University of Toronto, literally has stars in her eyes as she contemplates a future as an astronaut.

Delaney Brookes, who won a Major Renewable Entrance Scholarship from McGill University, is planning a future in biological research. Multiaward-winning graduate Crystal Jin, entering the engineering science program at the University of Toronto, hopes to launch her own start-up in the future, while Shashank Ojha won the prestigious Schulich Leader Scholarship worth $100,000 to study engineering at Queen’s University.

Another outstanding Leaside student, Kate Uhlman, who’s in her third year of med school at McMaster University after already completing an MBA and Master of Science, found she had some time on her hands during the pandemic. She also recognized a need during library shutdowns to make books available to children without ready access to reading materials. She launched Children’s Book Bank, which provides free books to children and families in high-needs neighbourhoods across the GTA. Read more about Kate and her personal drive in Susan Scandiffio’s profile in our next issue.

These are only a handful of the energetic and imaginative kids who call Leaside home. As we head into August, and uncertainty hangs over the upcoming school year, these young people are testament that, despite the pandemic, the kids are all right! ■

Leaside High School’s Class of 2020 impressed Denise Wilson, the retiring head of guidance, with their hopeful, positive and mature attitude while dealing with a difficult end to their graduating year. Katerina This closeknit group supported each other to complete their year successfully, creating new traditions along the way and demonstrating great resilience. Here are four high-achieving representatives of their class: Katerina Benevides has had her sights set on the stars for years and now, with an entrance scholarship to the University of Toronto, she will study in the Astronomy and Physics Specialist Program as a stepping stone to her dream of working in the space program.

Katerina is well-prepared for this goal as she is one of the youngest members of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada and of York University’s Allan I. Carswell

Observatory Research Centre where she gives lectures to a variety of academics about astronomy and telescopes, conducts tours, and does research.

In addition, Katerina speaks many languages and has been a Spanish teacher’s assistant for several years. She was also on the archery team and is a musician specializing in the piano and trumpet. She managed all these accomplishments while maintaining an academic average in the mid-90s throughout high school, and a 94% average this year.

After earning her undergraduate degree, she plans to pursue a master’s degree and a doctorate in astrophysics with her ultimate goal of becoming an astronaut. She would also be happy as a computational and theoretical astrophysicist at NASA or the Canadian Space Agency.

Delaney Brookes won a Major Renewable Entrance Scholarship

from McGill University worth a total of $12,000 over four years.

Delaney credits her earlier plan to study in the UK with motivating her to achieve high marks and graduate with a 97.8% average.

At McGill, Delaney will be studying in the Biology, Biomed and Life Science Program. Her plan for the future is to pursue graduate studies and take up biological research.

Delaney explains that her science courses were her favourites and praises her teachers for doing “an amazing job of simulating a university atmosphere by having students research, prepare and design Delaney their own labs.”

During her years at LHS, she was involved in volleyball, peer tutoring, a community service group and student council. Outside of school, her favourite pastime was playing the piano. She says her GRADS page 9

by DAN PRINGLE As much of the world’s attention focused on the Black Lives Matter movement, I initially said little in person and over social media about it. To be honest, I felt like I didn’t have something new to share or a particularly enlightening experience worth distracting from some of the more powerful and educational voices available. At the same time I was torn – as a Black man with a platform, I felt obligated to say something meaningful.

After some soul searching and conversations with family, I realized that as a Black man, my story is worth sharing and learning about regardless of how I feel about it. And as I think about it, my story is unique.

I was adopted from birth by two white parents. My dad (I’ve never referred to them as adoptive parents) was finishing his PhD in nuclear engineering, while my mom had just founded a highly regarded private school. Two years later they would adopt my brother, who is of Jamaican descent and, seven years after that, my sister who is of Indian descent.

We moved to Leaside in the mid 90s. I remember only one other Black family in the neighbourhood throughout my childhood. In school, from Junior Academy, to Sterling Hall, and finally Crescent School, I was usually the only Black kid in my grade. I grew up playing hockey and soccer, and was typically the only Black kid on the team. When I graduated high school I went to Western University, which was predominantly white. In my physiotherapy program at the University of Toronto I was once again the only Black kid in my class.

That entire time, I didn’t know about systemic racism or that the civil rights movement failed to solve all of the problems. I wasn’t aware that people were being harassed, arrested, and murdered for walking or driving “while Black.” I attributed the stories that did hit the news as mistakes by a few bad apples that were inevitable in any society. When I heard about police takedowns, I always assumed people were doing something they shouldn’t be doing or hanging out where they shouldn’t be hanging out.

As far as I knew, when I didn’t make a hockey team, it was because of a lack of skill not because I was Black. When a movie theatre attendant paid us more attention, it was because we were making noise, not because I was Black. Conversely, I

From masonry to piggery – Ernie Wilkens pivots to his next career The Wilkens family knows how to stay together – even when they’re apart.

More than 40 years ago, Otto Wilkens and his younger brother, Ernie, worked together as masons.

One of their customers is my church, St. Cuthbert’s on Bayview. When suddenly we had spongy plaster inside on our south wall after heavy rains, Wilkens came to the rescue. Our volunteer property manager, Heather Conolly, describes them as “talented, reliable and a good team to work with.”

It was tough earlier this spring when all work had to stop, but Ernie was determined to do well by all his employees, family or not. Once work could start again in May, the company was pleasantly surprised by the number of calls they received asking for their services. Ernie really didn’t think long about whether or not he was still making the right decision to step aside for the next generation. He knew it was time.

And Ernie has found something else to do now that he is living most of the time in Fenwick. I’m still waiting for the runners’ high

I mentioned in my May missive that being marooned in our own home during this lockdown seemed to make it easier to pack on a few extra pounds. Yes, COVID-19 has given me something of a minor girth defect. So, since early April, I’ve been trying my hand (or feet, as it were) at running. It started off slowly, and by that, I mean my morning run was really a morning walk.

But by mid-April I was well and truly running six mornings a week with Saturday as my day of rest.

Those early runs were just over three kilometres. Yes, I know, not exactly an Ironman competition.

But the route I’d devised seemed to feature considerable elevation changes. One long uphill segment made it seem that I was climbing about 5,000 feet. This belief was reinforced by my obvious need for oxygen as I crested the top of the mountain (well, really it was just a hill, even a gentle slope). But it took its toll.

As I increased the distance and added at least one more day for rest and recovery, I changed my route

in favour of one that, while not exactly flat, at least did not give me altitude sickness.

I’m now up to a 5.3-kilometre morning run, at least four times a week.

I’m even using an app on my phone that tells me precisely how far and fast I’ve run, my elapsed time, the net elevation gain in my route, and the weekly fluctuations in the TSX. You might think that after three months of very consistently rising at 6:30 a.m. and running for a halfhour or more, I might be feeling better about it all. My running times for the route have decreased and my distances have increased. I’m clearly fitter than I was when I started. And I’ve even shed a few pounds (though not nearly as many as I expected or

wanted). You might even think I’ve been bitten by the running bug and have become a little obsessive about it as evidenced by my slavish adherence to my weekly running schedule.

Or, miracle of miracles, you might conclude that I must be enjoying the half-hour of solitude and reflection to remain so committed to it.

Ha! Now that’s funny! Were it only so, I say with considerable regret. It is not an exaggeration to say that each step is painful. Each moment passes so very, very slowly. And the only time I enjoy it. … Who am I kidding? There really is no time when I enjoy it. I will say that when I finish my 5.3 kilometres, I am filled with relief and a momentary flush of virtue for having done the right thing.

I’ve often heard veteran joggers talk about the elusive “runners’ high” that keeps them coming back for more. To me, “elusive” is not quite the right word. “Mythical” might be more appropriate. Or how about “fictitious?” I’ve yet to experience anything that could remotely be construed as the “runners’ high” unless it encompasses profuse perspiration, achy feet, and painful legs that for the rest of the day protest to the point of mutiny. But I’m still waiting and still running.

I’m reporting on all of this here to help stop me from bailing on my morning ritual. And believe me, it wouldn’t take much for me to abandon my conviction. It’s hard on my knees. Good point! It’s dangerous running through the streets of a very quiet neighbourhood. True.

Just the other day I was startled when a car drove by me. I was on the sidewalk at the time, but still, it gave me a fright. Some say that breathing so hard for a half hour contributes to global warming. Who am I to stand in the way of flattening the world’s temperature curve?

But in the end, I’m hanging in. I figure I can do anything for 30 minutes four times a week. But man, it’s the longest half hour of my day.

He was Leaside’s nominee because of his exceptional level of involvement in school and extracurricular activities and outstanding academic record, with marks consistently in the 90s and a 92% average this year.

He also received the Horatio Alger Scholarship worth $5,000 and the Merit Award for $1,000.

Shashank’s major school activity was leading the Vex Robotics Team through many competitions and Leaside qualifying for World Championships 1523 Bayview Avenue as the only team from the TDSB two years in a row. With Leaside High School’s 75th anniversary being celebrated this year, Leaside Life is profiling a number of notable members of the school in various positions, as students, teachers, and more, to mark the milestone.

If you were a kid in the 60s, you were born into what most would argue is the greatest decade for rock 'n roll. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, and Janis Joplin took the world by storm. With no internet or video games, kids listened to a lot of music on the radio, and many dreamed of being rock stars.

For 1982 Leaside High School grad Stephen Stanley, that dream became a reality with huge success in the music business – success which continues to this day.

Stanley’s musical training came initially through guitar lessons starting at 12 at the former Donview Club in Thorncliffe, followed by lessons at Dave Snider Music.

Stanley’s good friend, Howard Porter, remembers their early days together. “As teenagers, there’s no doubt that music was Stephen’s main passion. We’d always be talking about bands or the latest music and we’d listen to records or trade them back and forth. We lived in the same apartment building and I could often hear him practising his guitar through the heating vents. I’m sure the other tenants loved that! As he got more proficient on the guitar he was always searching out friends who he might be able to form a band with. Eventually,

hanging out at band rehearsals or recording sessions became a big part of our social life.”

In high school, Stanley played in several bands but opted for drama over music classes and participated in numerous musicals.

Stanley wrote music in his drama classes and remembers the one

a quick success, drawing instant adulation on the city’s club circuit, and became one of Canada’s most popular indie rock bands. In 1991, they released their debut album, “Shakespeare, My Butt,” with iconic songs such as “Salesmen, Cheats and Liars,” and “Bleed a Little While Tonight,” being played on the airwaves to this day.

The album was named one of the top-10 in Canadian music history as voted by readers of Chart magazine.

The band produced three more albums, was inducted into the Canadian Indie Music Hall of Fame in 2008, and was awarded gold records for “Shakespeare, My Butt.”

In 2010, the band toured to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their hit album, selling out shows, including one at Massey Hall, where Stanley had spent so many years as an usher.

In 2013, Stanley left the group and, in 2015, formed the Stephen Stanley Band, which released its first album, Jimmy & The Moon, in 2017. The album has garnered much acclaim in the press and with audiences around the world. They were invited to play in Germany in 2018 and subsequently toured the UK and Ireland.

For Stanley, it’s the “lyrics and themes which are the most important.” The songs resonate with emotion, rock, and jangle, which will hook you in right from the start.

Brent Jensen, the band’s manager, says of Stanley that “I think everyone should be so lucky as to experience his raw, genuine talent” and describes him as “a warm, humble, and sincere person.”

Like a backyard in the sky, a balcony can offer apartment and condo residents the opportunity to create a personal patch of paradise.

A place to escape the confinements of indoor living, sip a morning coffee, dine al fresco and even grow some food.

I can only imagine how important balconies must be to apartment and condo dwellers during COVID19. Yet with all that we know now about how important vertical greening is to help our environment, I still see so many empty balconies in our “Garden City” of Leaside.

So, what’s on your balcony?

That’s the very question I asked my condo-living friends in preparation for this article, but I wasn’t expecting much.

The pandemic has certainly made it more difficult to source seeds, plants and planting materials and yet the biggest complaints I heard were about the wind, the dirty city air (because of construction) and the heat. That is, until I ran into Pat Morin.

What’s on yours?

If you want to green up and make better use of your balcony, here’s my advice: • Don’t bite off more than you can chew. Start small with a table and a few chairs. Bring some of your houseplants (available at any grocery store) outside to a shady spot to learn how much sun, shade and wind your balcony gets.

You will soon find out if it’s easy or difficult to keep your plants watered.

• Seek professional advice on what to plant from someone who specializes in balcony gardening once you understand your balcony’s micro climate better. You may not be able to grow what you want to grow, but know

that there is a plant for almost every situation.

• Always check with your condo or apartment management company to learn about any restrictions.

But most important of all, use your balcony well. If not, this only gives developers a reason to treat these outdoor oases as design accessories rather than functional and essential spaces. ■

As it relates to Leaside, I have reservations about whether or not there is any appetite at the TPL board to “do something different” in neighbourhoods that are well organized and prepared.

The increasing population density must be factored into any future strategic planning. It means that these plans should be scrutinized “from a local perspective” to be sure they are the right fit for our community as a whole. It means that we need to acknowledge that the priorities of the City may not be aligned with the priorities of Leaside. As I have written about previously (April 2019 column), the perceived relative strength of the Leaside community can be viewed as a negative when it comes to rallying City support for initiatives that may differ from the development work tuned to the needs of other neighbourhoods across the city. To that end, every neighbourhood is unique and should be working on its individual plans to create value.

Surely, they realize that many local economies across the globe today are in rapid transition, moving from bases of manufacturing and service industries to information, technology and creative idea-driven industries. As this transformation unfolds, progressive communities are taking the time to assess and reimagine their assets and corresponding development strategies to position themselves for what is needed to succeed in the economies of the future. Even dating back to 2008, a report by Wendy Newman for the former Ministry of Culture suggests that public libraries have the potential to contribute to economic development and that Ontario has major

opportunities to leverage that potential beyond the traditional roles in literacy, learning, and community.

The report made the point that libraries should also be viewed as an “engine of economic development,” providing access to information and communication technology while contributing to sustained prosperity in a knowledge-based economy that values innovation to drive growth.

Will our library be up to the task?

We should begin planning for Leaside’s future needs now Perhaps public-private partnerships could be explored in Leaside that might be able to unlock additional value from the current set of assets we enjoy today. This approach is not new. Leaside Gardens would not have become a reality without the community coming together to rally behind the dream, then work together with the City to make something happen using a noncookie cutter approach to funding.

As a lesson, we should not be deterred from seeking the support of stakeholders that share our beliefs and begin the plan to co-create value together in anticipation of Leaside’s future needs.

According to the TPL’s website, the next step in their strategic planning process is to dive deeper into these areas through targeted consultations to translate these needs into strategic areas of focus for the next five years. They are asking: “What unique value can the Library add in these seven focus areas?” I believe we need to be at the table for those “targeted consultations” if many of us did not already voice an opinion last year. Maybe it really is time for the Leaside Town Council idea (Aug. 2019 column) to resurrect itself and begin work to ensure Leaside’s assets are well-positioned to “pitch” our ideas to the decision-makers at the City before it’s too late?

Bike Share comes to Leaside

by HOLLY REID Bike Share is rolling out 160 new stations this summer and recently two of them landed in Leaside.

Operated by the Toronto Parking Authority, Bike Share now boasts 625 stations and 6,850 bikes in the city and is beginning to expand into the suburbs. With one station located on Fleming Crescent at Bayview Avenue and another on Roehampton Avenue at Bayview Avenue, Leasiders, whether they live in North or South Leaside, can now take advantage of the growing network.

Mind the time limit Bike Share is likely the most affordable travel option in Toronto after walking. An annual pass costs $99, and passes are also available for 72 hours ($15), 24 hours ($7), and a single 30-minute trip ($3.25) (all prices before HST).

With passes, the number of trips is unlimited but not the duration of each trip. If you have a bike out for more than 30 minutes, overage fees apply, and these can quickly add up.

“Dock and unlock” For Bike Share to be an effective sharing network, the bikes must be in circulation, hence the 30-minute time limit on trips. If you have to travel longer, simply find a station with an empty dock and available bike, dock the bike and then unlock another to start the 30-minute timer ticking. Bike Share’s official app, CycleFinder PBSC, will help you out – showing station locations and real-time updates about the number of bikes and docking spaces available.

so many great local shops, restaurants and services, the Bayview main street is a popular destination. “Our board has long been interested in connecting to the Bike Share network and bringing more people to shop by bike, so we’re pleased to have the new station located conveniently in the middle of the BIA,” said Henry Byres, coordinator, Bayview Leaside BIA. Recently, high capacity bike racks were added on the southwest corner of Millwood Road and Bayview Avenue and on the southeast corner of Fleming Crescent and Bayview Avenue, making it easy for people on bikes to park and shop.

Where next?

On Bayview Avenue, institutions such as Holland Bloorview, Sunnybrook Hospital and Glendon College are obvious destinations that could be well served by Bike Share. But if Bike Share wants to optimize usage, the company will need more than new stations – it will also need a protected cycling route on Bayview Avenue.

Cycling etiquette – what are the rules of the road?

I support cycling. I celebrate that more and more Leasiders choose cycling as their primary mode of transportation, rather than clogging the roads with yet more cars. I’m encouraged that the City has been supportive of bicycle use, extending bike lanes for safer riding.

At the same time, I’m receiving an increasing number of complaints about unsafe bike practices.

As chair of the LRA’s Traffic and Transportation Committee, I hear from you about both automotive and cycling matters, and about the lack of enforcement and effective penalties.

There is a lot of confusion as to whether “the rules of the road” apply to cyclists. Bikes are officially classified as vehicles, but many cyclists fail to stop at stop signs or – all too often – even at traffic lights.

Many cyclists ride on sidewalks, even on quiet streets where there is no automotive threat. The number of sidewalk cyclists seems to have increased greatly since the start of the pandemic.

a certain degree of obedience to the rules: a red light means stop; a no-right-turn sign means turning is forbidden; one-way streets mean just that. Theoretically, this should apply to cyclists as well as drivers. However, I think we all have experienced some near misses as pedestrians: being overtaken from behind by a swift but silent sidewalk cyclist; while walking along Bayview; or even at the end of one’s own driveway. We have all occasionally been surprised by a cyclist speeding out from a side street without warning.

How can this situation can be improved? Is there a way to provide greater clarity and effective enforce-

ment of the rules of the road? Your suggestions are welcome.

Cyclists are providing a public service by not driving cars. This city needs more defined bike lanes (not sidewalks, which are for pedestrians) to protect the safety of the cyclist, who is no match for a heavy car or truck.

But it would be a great pity if complaints about the cycling behaviour of some were to increase the likelihood of a public backlash against cycling.

The Leaside Residents Association hopes we will soon be able to hold in-person monthly board meetings again, but we can at least offer accessibility to our meetings via Zoom. The “new” Committee of Adjustment: Virtual but not virtuous?

Neighbours of a proposed rebuild on Glenvale Boulevard waited in vain to have their say at the Committee of Adjustment on June 23rd.

Struggling to manage under COVID-19, most City services are not operating as business as usual, and that includes City Planning.

Determined to handle a growing backlog of applications, the CoA held virtual hearings in June, and they have not gone smoothly. At least not for neighbours who have concerns.

City Planning introduced new time lines for receiving written submissions (five days instead of one) and a new requirement to register to make an oral deputation, with one day’s notice required. However, at the June 23 hearing, residents who had registered to speak to the committee were not invited in (to the virtual hearing room) to make their deputation, and therefore were not heard from.

That day, the North York Committee of Adjustment agenda included two Leaside applications: 67 Sutherland Dr. and 83 Glenvale Blvd., both of

The committee approved each application, disregarding residents’ objections. Further, members of the committee displayed a woeful ignorance of the tests, and/or overtly denied the tests as laid out in the public notice and the Planning Act. What to do? The Leaside Residents Association (LRA) submitted a Request for Review on behalf of the residents involved in each of the cases. Neither of these was acknowledged by or responded to by City staff. The residents working with the LRA were left with no option but to appeal the decision to the Toronto Local Appeal Body (TLAB), which in both cases they did by the due date.

cerns associated with virtual hearings and the issues with the committee decision-making. Residents associations (especially the Federation of North Toronto Residents Associations [FoNTRA] of which, full disclosure, I am co-chair) supported virtual hearings for applications based upon City Planning’s commitment that these virtual hearings would be used for applications with (truly) minor variances.

Increasingly, they are being used for complex applications with many variances, and multiple community objections. In addition, we are hearing concerns that: • the revised timeframes limit the opportunity for comments to be submitted both in writing and orally and • written comments are not being posted in time for them to be part of the deliberations.

LRA and FoNTRA have argued for many years that the CofA process is inherently unfair to residents in opposition (for example, the applicant having the right to respond to objections but this right is not extended to opposing parties). With the virtual hearings, the new procedures increasingly favour the applicant and require opposing residents to appeal the approvals to the TLAB in an effort to get a fair hearing.

We’ll continue to monitor these matters. ■

As the number of active COVID-19 cases in Toronto continues to fall and a “new normal” begins to emerge, I would like to take this opportunity to provide a brief update on several initiatives in Leaside.

I know many Leasiders are concerned about traffic infiltration and road safety, particularly for children walking to school. As the former Chair of Transportation, I introduced Toronto’s first-ever comprehensive Vision Zero Road Safety Plan in 2016. In my first year as your councillor, I worked with the community to reduce Leaside’s speed limits and initiated a comprehensive Traffic Management Plan for the neighbourhood. While Transportation staff are waiting for traffic levels to stabilize before beginning data collection, I’m pleased to confirm that the stakeholder engagement process is well underway. We will continue to keep you updated.

Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) in school and community safety zones is a critical part of our road safety plan. Once the province permitted Toronto to move

forward with an ASE program, I directed Transportation staff to double the number of cameras across the city. In January, one of the first ASE units in Toronto was installed on Bessborough Drive, between Field Avenue and Sharron Drive. While provincial legislation prevented the City from issuing fines to drivers for several months after the system was rolled out, I’m pleased to report that as of July 6, 2020, tickets were set to be issued to offending drivers.

In October 2019, I wrote a column in Leaside Life about the standing pool of water at 70 Wicksteed Ave. – many of you will know this site as “Lake Leaside.” This year, my team once again facilitated the dewatering and shoring repair process. In tandem, we have urged the devel-

oper to undertake a full site restoration to permanently remedy this longstanding issue. As a result, the developer has advised that a new site plan is in the works, anticipated to be submitted to the City shortly.

I firmly believe that the property should be restored to the pre-excavation state if a long-term plan does not happen soon.

Finally, I’m pleased to advise that the Trace Manes Park and Georgia Walsh Memorial Playground Project is moving forward, and City staff anticipate the work will be completed by the end of the year. At the time of writing, a vast majority of the concrete work had been completed – including footings, curbs, the crawl tunnel, and climbing wall in the playground. I know we’re all looking forward to this meaningful addition to the community.
