An Foclóir Aiteach/ The Queer Dictionary a project by Unions of Students in Ireland (USI)

• English-Irish dictionary • open learning resource • collaborative project • increases awareness of the

LGBTQI+ and Irish language communities in Ireland

What inspired you to start the project?

The project was started by USI to help members of the LGBTQI+ community express themselves in Irish. This is something we thought was very important. Language around the Queer community has been constantly evolving and changing, so the Irish equivalent should be in line with these changes.

What has been the impact of the project?

Many students have now been given the vocabulary to talk about LGBTQI+ issues in Irish and to identify themselves in Irish. This has particularly given native speakers in the LGBTQI+ community more agency when talking about themselves in Irish.

What would you advise someone who would like to replicate your project?

Working with other organisations who are experts in the area, such as TENI (Transgender Equality Network Ireland) and BeLonG To, was instrumental. We would strongly recommend partnering with other expert organisations to get as much as possible out of the project.
