In the second half of 2021, with the resumption of live music-making, Leamington Music will have put on 31 concerts and we now continue with another nine in the first three months of 2022.
Welcome
The Early Music at St Mary’s Church, Warwick series will transport us to Venice in January with the Monteverdi String Band, playing here for the first time, and the return of the Gonzaga Band takes us to Milan in March. In February, The Gesualdo Six come to Warwick for the third time to treat us to motets written in a Golden Age of English music. The Investec International String Quartets series in the Royal Pump Rooms sees the return of BBC New Generation Artists the Consone Quartet, the Pražák Quartet from Prague and, after too long a gap, the Heath Quartet will be back. The annual Ensemble 360 two-concert Sunday date takes place on 6 February with the recently premiered Paul Rissmann work, Izzy Gizmo, in the morning and the afternoon has popular works by Mozart, Dvořák and Schubert ('The Trout'). The Dream Factory hosts Kosmos nine days later, another example of the broad range of music that Leamington Music puts on. The 2022 Leamington Music Festival will, having had to cancel the last two Festivals at the usual time of the first bank holiday weekend in May, hopefully take place between 28 April and 2 May and among musicians invited are Emma Abbate, James Gilchrist, Andrey Gugnin, Emma Johnson, John Lenehan, Lana Trotovšek, Raphael Wallfisch, Ensemble 360, the Leonore Piano Trio and the Sacconi Quartet. Leamington Music is very grateful to all those who support our activities, including the Education Programme and we urge everyone to join our emailing list so that we can keep in touch, and also to think about becoming a Friend as the current membership makes such a generous contribution to our funds and helps in various volunteering roles. We look forward to seeing you at our concerts during 2022.

Haydn Quartet in D Op 71 No 2 Onslow Quintet in C minor Op 38 'The Bullet' Schubert Quintet in C D956 The first period instrument group to become BBC New Generation Artists, the Consone's first concert in Leamington in February 2020 included a quartet by Onslow. It made a big impression and there will be much interest in his Quintet, written in 1829 and nicknamed 'The Bullet', before we hear Schubert’s sublime Quintet, which dates from the previous year. www.consonequartet.com

3pm | Afternoon Concert Best-selling children’s book, Izzy Gizmo, tells the enchanting story of an intrepid young inventor who puts her talents to work to rescue a crow that can’t fly. This brand-new family concert brings Izzy’s mechanical marvels and infectious creative spirit to life! Narrated by Polly Ives and with pictures from the book, this concert is a great introduction to live music for children. Original music by Paul Rissmann features pots, pans, whistles and household items (as well as orchestral instruments). Ideal for ages 3-7 but great fun for everyone, it’s full of wit, invention, songs and actions, and plenty of opportunities to join in.

Mozart Piano Quartet in G minor K478 Dvořák String Quintet No 2 in G Op 77 Schubert Piano Quintet in A D667 'The Trout' Ensemble 360 has traditionally followed the morning Family Concert with a largescale chamber concert attracting growing and enthusiastic audiences. The Dvořák and Schubert Quintets make a feature of the double bass adding an extra sonority, as we trip through Bohemian woods and listen to the babbling stream teeming with trout.

Alla Milanese Milan around 1600 was at the centre of a musical revolution, with performers and composers like Rognoni, Cima and Bovicelli and nuns like Caterina Assandra excelling. With the emergence of a virtuoso violin school, together with publication of some of the first instrumental music polarizing treble and bass instruments - violin and violone, cornetto and bass trombone - and a tradition of virtuoso singing both in the cathedral and in the convents, musical Milan was the place to be. Founded twenty years ago at the Royal Northern College of Music, the Heath Quartet has seen a number of changes in its line-up over the years, but has consistently won prizes first in competitions and then for its recordings. This winter season it performs in Barcelona and Berlin and in the summer will be at the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival.
