The building proposal set in Piedmont Park focuses on the ideas from Hammons’ Flight Fantasy. The building is a celebration of a repressed culture, a fight for accurate representation in society, and an exhibition of resilience of the black community. It focuses on the refusal to be bounded or suppressed by laws, injustices, discrimination, social norms, etc. The structural members of the skin are spaced out in a way to show the tension that is held within. The two most important programs to the future of architecture and places of collaboration and sharing of knowledge: the climate hall and the justice center, rupture through the skin at opposing moments of the building. The ruptures represents the hope that one day society can fully rip apart the cultural norms that are repressing and misrepresenting individual societies.

The Pavilion project is located in Parc de Poblenou in Barcelona, Spain. It is a one story structure composed of nine spaces used for gathering, picnicking, meditation, etc. The structure’s main purpose is to provide shelter from sun and rain as it is completely open to the outdoors and does not require climate control. The plan was derived from a nine-square and the pavilion is composed of three sizes of brick arches.

The Puzzle is an abstract structure designed within the boundaries of a precise list of given rules and constraints, including maximum overall volume and square footage, individual room volumes and the amount of rooms required. The approach was to create a system of spatial relationships, which are diagrammed to the left. Four families were derived from the square and folded in similar, yet unique ways to create a continuous cube of spaces defined by the chosen system. The floor plates were extruded upward until they were capped off by another floor plate above. This system of design created very intriguing spaces that could become light shafts or atriums.

Society of Rooms

The Society of Rooms is a liberal arts education building in downtown Atlanta. It houses three programs: music, language and design. Some of the programs include chorus rooms, individual music practice rooms, classrooms and meeting rooms of various sizes, and painting and drawing studios. Similar to the Puzzle project, the design of this building began with a precise list of rules regarding room volumes, programs, and circulation. Fifty percent of the structure’s volume is made up of the dedicated spaces discussed previously.

The other fifty percent of the volume is composed of circulation, gathering spaces, balconies, etc., referred to as the rooms of agreement. The rooms of agreement are exposed to the outdoor environment and require no climate control. The dedicated spaces, however, are treated as a normal building with air conditioning.

The system of organization employed in this project was created by a continuous circuit of ramps that weave and noodle through the dedicated spaces. The contradicting part of this system is that in the same way that the slope restrictions of the ramps formed the spaces dedicated to the specific programs, the square footage requirements of the dedication spaces also formed the location of the ramps. This building, essentially, is a fight between mass and void, or the dedicated spaces and the rooms of agreement, respectively.

Rapid Relief Hospitals

After months of civil unrest and increased gang violence, in August 2021 Haiti was hit by a major (M7.2) earthquake as well as a Tropical Depression two days later. Leaving behind broken communities, many Haitians began migrating north through countries like Mexico towards the United States in hopes of seeking asylum. As of October, 30,000 migrants have made it to Acuna, Mexico in hopes for a safe way to cross into Texas. Due to the staggering number of refugees, it can take days or weeks to know the results of an asylum application, leading the refugees to camp on the banks of the river and under the Acuna Del Rio International Bridge. This refugee camp has seen high numbers of injuries, deaths, suicide attempts, and disease in the past few months and Rapid Relief Hospitals are part of the solution.

Rapid Relief Hospitals are temporary, prefabricated and modular systems that are quick and easy to construct, but also incorporate biophilic design characteristics to promote an environment of comfort and healing.

Mobius Strip The Mobius strip is the most simple of the nonoriental mathematical shapes. The shape is composed of a single enclosed, continuous strip.

Klein Surface The geometry shown above is the figure-eight version of the Klein surface. Like the Mobius strip, it is also a non-oriental mathematic shape.

Catenoid Helicoid The helicoid, after the plane and the catenoid, is the third minimal surface to be known. Its name derives from its similarity to the helix.
