MODULE THREE TASK
PRE-SESSION TASK Personal-Disclosure Mutual Sharing (PDMS) is a structured team-building intervention where individuals openly share personal stories, values, and experiences with their group. Engaging in PDMS can lead to the development of a deeper understanding of self and others, an increase in trust and the fostering of greater cohesion among team members. Dr Jamie Barker (Loughborough University) is a world renowned academic in the space of team psychology in elite sport, having worked with many professional football teams and Olympic teams. Watch the video by clicking the link below and consider where you have used this approach in your own practice and how you could extend it’s reach and impact in the future.

ACTIVITY 2: DYSFUNCTIONAL TEAMS. Dysfunctional sports teams struggle to work together effectively, resulting in poor performance and unmet goals. Key issues often include •
Absence of trust: players and staff don’t show vulnerability or admit mistakes — leading to fear, guarded and non-inclusive behaviour
•
Fear of conflict: staff and players avoid honest conversations — meaning tensions build beneath the surface
•
Lack of commitment: without clear decisions and shared understanding, players lose focus on the short- and long-term game plan
•
Avoidance of accountability: standards slip when players and coaches don’t challenge each other
•
Inattention to results: individuals chase personal stats or glory — rather than prioritising team success
Looking at the characteristics of dysfunctional teams, where have you experienced these: What helped lead to these?
What would help you address these?

ACTIVITY 3: PROF EDMONDSON’S QUESTIONS. Psychological safety is when you feel able to: express your ideas and concerns openly, ask questions, recognise your mistakes, challenge others, including authority figures, and doing so without fear of negative consequences. Think about your current / most recent role and answer the following questions .
1. If a mistake is made on your team, how is it managed?
2. Are members of the team able to bring up problems and tough issues?
3. How do people on your team deal with others that may be different?

ACTIVITY 4: ORGANISATIONAL SOCIALISATION. Integrating new individuals into a team quickly and efficiently is critical for high performing teams. Leaders should foster an inclusive environment through open communication, clear role expectations, and equalising teamwork to prevent cliques from forming. Organisational socialisation is “how individuals come to understand the responsibilities, norms, and culture of a specific group” (Jones, 1986). •

High Performing Teams Podcast In this episode, social psychologist Angelika Love speaks to four athletes-turned-coaches about building high-performing teams and developing the next generation of team players: Tim Murdy (former Rugby Canada International player), Julie Platt (former Olympian rower), Jeff Williams (former Rugby Canada International player), and Carly Haggard (former NCAA All-American Ice Hokey player). Together with Angelika, her guests explore what their international sporting and coaching careers have taught them about setting teams up for success in highly competitive environments -- lessons on coachability, self-awareness and vulnerability that translate across disciplines and might enrich our thinking on teams everywhere.
