ZOYSIAGRASS Warm-Season Turfgrass Breeder Presents Zoysiagrass with Novel Traits

orth Carolina State University’s Turfgrass Breeding and Genetics program, under the direction of Dr. Susana Milla-Lewis, has released Lobo™ Zoysiagrass (experimental name XZ 14069). Researchers selected Lobo from hundreds of nursery mates for its unusual combination of aggressive establishment and stress tolerance. These traits were later confirmed by six years of multi-location trials under low input conditions.

Lobo Zoysia will be exclusively licensed through Sod Solutions for commercial production and marketing. This release is NC State’s first warm-season turfgrass cultivar from Milla-Lewis’s breeding program that started in 2009.

RAPIDLY EXPANDING ZOYSIAGRASS USE Zoysiagrasses are warm-season, perennial turfgrasses often used in home lawns, commercial landscapes, and golf courses across the southern U.S. They are generally known for their low maintenance requirements but slow establishment. Lobo is unique because it is fast to establish, drought-tolerant, and maintains good color and quality under very low inputs.

“This medium-fine zoysiagrass cultivar is simultaneously well adapted for infrequently managed areas like golf course roughs, roadsides, and airport in-fields but also for higher-end uses like home lawns, commercial landscapes and golf course fairways where aesthetics are equally important as maintenance. It’s truly a unicorn,” said Milla-Lewis.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCE COAST TO COAST Lobo Zoysia has been a consistent top performer in roadside trials by the NC Department of Transportation and also a National Turfgrass Evaluation Program (NTEP) specialty trial. These Professional Golf Association (PGA) funded NTEP trials are currently conducted at eight sites from Florida to New Mexico. The trials are highly competitive and include other warm-season grass species like bermudagrass and buffalograss, known for their superior drought tolerance. Lobo repeatedly received top performance marks at these climatically diverse locations.

“Zoysiagrass is frequently grown in the southeastern U.S. but minimally in the West. This line shows the broader possibility of zoysiagrass use, especially in areas with significant drought stress or water restrictions,” Milla-Lewis said.

NC State hosts both warm-season and cool-season NTEP trials at the Lake Wheeler Road Field Lab.

RELENTLESS PRAISE Select NC sod producers, Sod Solutions, and the North Carolina Sod Producers Association (NCSPA) helped support the development of Lobo by teaming up to form Turf Research North Carolina (TRNC) in 2016. Growers made financial contributions over a six-year period to fund research and development of Lobo and other materials yet to come out of the program.

All NCSPA participating growers contributing to the program will have exclusive access to the grasses when they are released.

Several of these sod growers hosted 200 square feet trial blocks of Lobo with impressive establishment results. One grower noted that stolons had already rooted at five points only three days after planting. “This grass is relentless,” he commented to Milla-Lewis.

Lobo Zoysia production will be certified by NC Crop Improvement to ensure the purity of this genetically unique turfgrass.

Participating sod farms are steadily increasing the production of Lobo and limited amounts of this zoysiagrass will be available for purchase in the summer of 2022.

The Lobo cultivar was tested with many others in low input conditions on NC roadsides where it exhibited quick establishment.

CULTIVATING EXCELLENCE “Dr. Milla-Lewis is one of the top breeders internationally,” said Tobey Wagner, president of Sod Solutions. “There was no hesitation to help support her program. We think Lobo will be one of the most versatile grasses on the market because of its many improved qualities but also because it will be one of the easiest cultivars out there to maintain with minimal upkeep.”

Milla-Lewis’s turfgrass breeding program focuses on droughttolerant warm-season species and tall fescue. She expects to release a new St. Augustinegrass cultivar in 2022.

What company do you work for and what is your title?

I am the Golf Course Superintendent at Falling Creek Country Club in Kinston, NC.

How many years have you been in this position?

I have been at Falling Creek for almost 3 years now.

For me, it took getting out of golf

It started in high school when I was trying to think of a career path that would allow me to work outdoors. My original idea was to work in landscaping, until I fell in love with the golf course.

What path led you to your current position?

What is the best part of your job?

I got my Turfgrass Management degree from North Carolina State University. Before going to school, I spent a summer at Kinston Country Club as an intern just to gain a bit of experience in managing turf. After graduating, I remained at KCC before accepting the Assistant Superintendent job at the Emerald Golf Club in New Bern, NC. From there, I spent some time as the Production Manager for U.S. Lawns of Greenville, NC, but I inevitably realized that managing a golf course was my true calling. I was rehired at KCC where I became the Superintendent.

After spending 4 years in that position, I decided to make the move across town to Falling Creek Country Club where I am today.

The best part of my job is being able to see the sun rise every morning. To me, there is nothing better than seeing a beautiful sunrise on a job that you love.

What inspired you to become a part of TCNC? I was inspired to become part of the TCNC because of all the good things it does to help promote our industry. With its many educational opportunities and its activism within the green industry, it made me excited to join this great association.

Why did you decide to join the Board of Directors?

Do you have a mentor in the industry?

I decided to become involved with the Board of Directors because I just wanted to try to contribute and give back to the industry that has given me so much joy over the years.

Dean Baker has been my mentor for my entire career. He was the superintendent at KCC that hired me out of high school and was instrumental in my development as a turfgrass manager and my love for golf. I had the honor of serving as his superintendent when he became the General Manager for KCC. Dean is one of kindest and most knowledgeable turf managers I know and I am extremely thankful to have him as a mentor and as a friend.

What do you feel is the biggest challenge facing the turfgrass industry right now?

I think the biggest issue facing the turfgrass industry right now, along with many other industries, is a lack of employees. Finding and keeping quality employees these days has become a struggle.

What do you do in your free time?

In my free time I enjoy grilling, playing golf, and spending time with my wife Bethany and my 2-year-old son Huff.

What would your advice be for people entering the turfgrass industry now?

Advice that I would give people entering the turfgrass industry would be: 1. Find the career path that you love. For me, it took getting out of golf to realize just how much I loved it and how important it was to me. So don’t be afraid to search and find what truly makes you happy. 2. Do not let your work get in the way of your other obligations. It is very easy for one to let their work consume them and miss out on time that could be spent with family. The turf will be there tomorrow.

U.S. SOD CHECKOFF IS WORKING HARD TO

S

od producers in the U.S. have been discussing the benefits of creating a sod checkoff since 1996, but only in recent years has there been more intentional discussion around how the industry can begin that process.

The goal of any checkoff program is to increase product demand and/or expand markets. For the sod industry specifically, the check- off program will seek to Bring Grass to Life and increase value and profitability per square foot. This can include programs that will increase preference for sod, promote sod to consumers nationally and conduct research to educate and inform industry regulators and politicians.

Dr. Casey Reynolds, TPI Executive Director, has been a powerful voice behind the effort, rallying the industry around the benefits of an industry-wide checkoff.

“The sod checkoff will benefit every producer and farm by increasing visibility and value of sod that includes driving preference for natural grass sod with both consumers and customers, and by uniting the U.S. sod industry to protect and even grow market share in the face of threats from misinformation, building codes that seek to reduce our market, grass bans, and even competitors like artificial turf and others that compete for our space,” said Reynolds.

“I see the sod checkoff advancing the industry, positively impacting my own sod farm and creating a legacy for future generations to love their lawn,” said Diane Mischel with DeBuck’s Sod Farm in Michigan. “As individual farms, our message is just a voice in the crowd, but the sod checkoff will be a megaphone, funneling our message into a clear powerful channel.”

GETTING THE PROCESS STARTED As of January 2021, a draft order that outlines the key points needed for an efficient, successful checkoff program has been written and submitted to the USDA for review. Once approved, it will be published in the U.S. Federal Register for public viewing and commentary prior to a vote in spring of 2022.

If passed by a majority vote of U.S. sod producers, the program will be implemented and governed by sod producers who are nominated by fellow producers. This group will invest checkoff dollars in national and consumer marketing collateral, agronomic and consumer research, promotional kits that can be customized by growers and customer and regulator education and outreach, to help increase value and profitability per square foot of sod for the U.S. sod industry. The proposed assessment rate is 1/10 of one penny for every square foot of sod sold.

With a checkoff, the U.S. sod industry can bring producers across the country together to change the narrative around the benefits of natural grass. Please consider voting yes in the upcoming referendum, so we can finally give our industry the unified voice it needs to protect and grow markets for many years to come.

This Short Course offers a full curriculum of the science of turfgrass management as well as Continuing Education Credits for NCDACS Pesticide and NCLCLB Landscape Contractors’ license holders, and it will help you prepare for the NCCTP exam.

This Short Course is recommended but not required to take the NCCTP exam.

Curriculum covers nine core areas: Turfgrass Characteristics; Establishing Turfgrass; Soils & Nutrient Management; Cultural Practices; Pests & Integrated Pest Management; Pesticides & Plant Growth Regulators; Landscape Safety & Pesticide Use; Calculations & Calibration; Turfgrass Business & Economics.

Candidates have six months from the date of their enrollment acceptance to complete the NCCTP exam.

Candidates have six hours to complete the exam and must score 80% or more on each section to receive the NCCTP designation.

Exams can be taken at the TCNC office in Raleigh during normal business hours, or arrangements can be made at your local NC State Extension location.

Exams will not be graded if any application information is missing or if TCNC membership status cannot be confirmed.

Please allow two to three weeks for exam grading and reports.

Upon successful completion of the exam, candidates will receive communication with their results and either next step options or their graduation packet.

Maintenance Requirements: Maintain a current TCNC membership as a means of demonstrating ongoing support for the industry.

Submit an annual $50 renewal fee, which supports the NCCTP program and related promotional activities.

Designation year is the same as the TCNC membership year, from July 1st to June 30th.

Hold a current NC Pesticide Applicator’s License.

Subscribe to, actively support and uphold the TCNC Certification Code of Ethics.
