Itis so very hard to believe that we are well into putting the final arrangements for the planning of the MTC 50th Anniversary Turfgrass Conference and Trade Show at the Turf Valley Resort in Ellicott City on December 16, 2025.
We have listened to your suggestions and are working diligently to make many of these happen, after all this is your conference. The Education Committee is putting together a program which you are not going to want to miss, so mark your calendars and plan to attend. Consider getting your company more attention by becoming a vendor and/or a sponsor.
One big change that is coming January 1, 2026, is that after 50 years, it is time to change the guard, and I am retiring as the Executive Director of the MTC. Yes, I have had the pleasure of working with or on this board since it started back in 1975. I had the pleasure of being the MDA representative / advisor of the board, which turned into being asked to serve on the board after I retired from MDA. Then, I had the honor of serving as Vice President, eventually becoming the President of the MTC before accepting the role of Executive Director, in which I have served for more than 13 years.
It’s time for some new blood and new ideas, and the board was astute enough to appoint Ben Ellis to take the reins. Ben and I have been working together closely for the last year, and I am very confident that Ben is more than capable of handling this position.
I thank each and every one of you for your support of the MTC and the University of MD Turfgrass Programs for the last 50 years and I am looking forward to watching Ben help lead the MTC into the next 50.

Ihope this message finds you well and thriving as we move through the heart of the summer season. This time of year brings both the rewards and the challenges that come with maintaining healthy, high-performing turf under the stresses of heat, drought, and high traffic. I know many of you are putting in long hours and leaning on both experience and innovation to keep your fields, courses, campuses, and landscapes in top condition.
Summer also offers us an opportunity to reflect on the strength of our community. Whether it’s through a shared conversation at a field day, collaboration on research trials, or the exchange of best practices, the Maryland Turfgrass Council continues to serve as a hub for learning and support. It’s been encouraging to see so many of you actively participating in events, asking great questions, and sharing your insights.
Looking ahead, we’re excited to continue providing valuable programming throughout the rest of the year. Planning is well underway for our annual conference that will be held at Turf Valley on December 16th. This year we will celebrate our 50-year anniversary, so please stay tuned for announcements.
