I write this message, we are in the midst of another challenging summer in the mid-Atlantic. Anyone who has grown turfgrass in this region knows that every summer brings its own difficulties. Dry spells increase irrigation demands, while wet periods put intense pressure on fungicide programs and quickly reveal drainage issues. With Maryland at its center, the mid-Atlantic presents some of the most difficult turfgrass-growing conditions in the United States. Whether you manage turfgrass on a golf course, sports field, residential or commercial landscape, or sod farm, the seasons here can be unforgiving. That is why we continue working with our partners to keep the turfgrass industry at the forefront of discussions in Annapolis, at the Maryland Department of Agriculture, on Capitol Hill, and at the University of Maryland. MTC leadership is committed to communicating the needs of our industry and the importance of a strong turfgrass program in Maryland to anyone willing to listen.

We recently met with Dean Wendy Powers of the University of Maryland College of Agriculture and Natural Resources via Zoom to emphasize the importance of hiring a turfgrass pathologist. We plan to continue seeking opportunities to underscore the need for a turfgrass pathologist focused on research and instruction in Maryland. The University of Maryland is an ideal place for cutting-edge turfgrass disease research, and we will keep communicating and educating whenever possible to highlight the value of this important industry.

As fall and winter approach, I want to remind everyone that the MTC Turfgrass Conference will return in December with another strong lineup of speakers. Please watch for more information soon. We are also preparing for the 2027 Maryland Legislative Session and working now to position the Maryland turfgrass industry for success before legislators return to Annapolis.
