From using film cameras, to £8 disposable cameras from Boots, 35mm creates a distinct look and edge to photos. Over the last 6 months, I have developed a love for film photography, from capturing moments with friends to admiring Hong Kong’s skyline. Each photo I have taken has collectively been allocated a spot on my overfilling wall of photos. The following pages consist of some of my favourite film photographs I have taken over the last couple of months; some with meaning, others are just a series of chaotic moments.

Most of the disposables shown are taken around Hong Kong and in Devon, UK. Each photo has a mini description underneath, mainly consisting of who is in the photo. I thought about going into detail for each photo but I decided against; allowing the audience to create their own interpretation behind the image. So make it interesting, be creative and figure your own meaning behind each of my photos. The following pages consist of my favourite film photographs. Most of these photos were taken with a disposable camera, ranging from Boots, FujiCam and Kodak 35mm film; each has their own colour grading and look. Most of these photos contain friends or family members, making each picture just that little bit more personal.

the power of an iphone camera

If I don’t have my DSLR camera on me, I will most likely always have my phone. Whether it’s a photo or video I will always capture a moment - some may say to ‘live in the moment’ but for me I want to be able to relive that moment and appreciate it more before it has gone from my memory.

The iphone camera is easily accessible at any moment. Alongside the regular camera, filters can be applied, to add an extra element to a photo. I usually edit my favourite photos from my iphone on VSCO. VSCO is an easy editing app that allows me to discover my own editing style and copy and paste it from photo to photo. The images on this page are edited with my own colour grading, as you can see i like a bit of grain for that ‘retro’ look.

Social media allows you to express your own style through photos. Instagram, allows you to manipulate the layout of your photos in your own way; making it easy to express your creativity. One of my favourite features on Instagram stories is the layering photos on top of each other. This idea was inspired by Zach Lower, consisting of a background photo and a smaller main photo placed on top. An example of this is on the very left. Snapchat, allows you to add quirky filters and effects to your photos. If i’m not using the regular iphone camera, I will be using the Snapchat camera to capture moments.

From a young age, I’ve been lucky enough to have access to cameras and technology which has allowed me to discover how to use these devices. Due to taking Media as an A-Level, I have learnt a fair share of tips and tricks when it comes to using DSLRs, especially in the photoshoot studio. I am constantly being given opportunities to put my photography to practice, for school events or helping friends out with their own EPQ. I am part of the Media Forum at school; this has allowed me to take photos for school events and performances (ie. house mini meets, school productions, music performances).

The main camera used is a Canon 700D. However,
I have access to a Canon 800D and Mark 5D
VI through school. The school resources and media department have allowed me to experiment with different lenses, flashes and gels to create different atmospheres for my photos.
The next following pages consist of some photos I have taken on
DSLRs over the past year. Most of the photos have been edited using Lightroom.
The resources available at school have allowed me to explore and experiment with different lighting, backdrops and camera equipment. Whether behind or in front of the camera, the photoshoot studio allows you to be creative and take some pretty cool photos. The next couple images on the opposite page, showcase some photos I have taken in the photoshoot studio.

As well as being able to take photos within the studio I have done quite a few photoshoots outside of school. Quite a few of these photos are linked with photoshoots for my magazine production within my AS media course.
I try to be creative as possible when doing my photoshoots, to make it both fun for the model and myself. I have multiple ideas for photoshoots which I have not yet been able to complete but I hope to showcase them soon.
These photos were taken back in December 2019. It was the first photoshoot I had ever done and is to be considered as an experimental shoot. I didn’t have much idea what I was doing, I forgot to plug lights in and tripped over quite a few wires. My inspiration for these photos was from the ‘Tyler The Creator’ x Lacoste collaboration.
I tried to experiment with different lighting and props. Majority of the photos consist of two softboxes being used, whereas, for the darker half lit photos I only used one.

My main model for these photos was David, he was quite willing to mess about and play around with the props and set up. Quite a few laughing fits later and these photos are the outcome of the photoshoot.
These photos were produced as a result of my A-Level media coursework. I had seen similar images incorporating mirrors on Pinterest and was instantly inspired to try it out for myself. I grabbed my trusty model Madeline, and we took the mirror from my bedroom down to a nearby reservoir. It took a while for me to figure out the best angles for Maddy’s reflections and for Maddy to lay comfortably. After some time figuring these are the photos produced.
