Welcome from the Director of Sport It has been a brilliantly positive start to the week for Prep School sport, even if the weather seemed determined to test our collective optimism and how warm our coats really are. Between an inspection timetable and conditions that could best be described as “character building”, we might have been forgiven for lowering expectations. Instead, we saw the exact opposite. Smiles stayed firmly in place, energy levels somehow remained high and we achieved something we are immensely proud of: lots of participation. Every child involved, every child active and every child very happy to be outside (if safe to do so), whatever the forecast suggested. I have been hugely impressed by how adaptable everyone has been. Fixtures were adjusted, plans tweaked and sessions reshaped, all without fuss. There is something quite special about watching children arrive to lessons and fixtures, see the rain, pause for half a second… and then run straight into it anyway. A huge well done to all the staff who made this happen and to the students who reminded us that a bit of snow, ice, wind and rain is rarely a problem. We are also incredibly close to opening our new Springfield Courts, as we finish up our risk assessment, and I can barely write that sentence without smiling. These will mean more fixtures, more opportunities for sport and physical activity and, crucially, more space for play. Not the tidy, organised, timetable-approved version, but the fun sort. The kind where rules are flexible, teams change every five minutes when the next teammate finishes their lunch and the final agreement on the result is inevitably never fully agreed. Play is, quite simply, joy. Research tells us it supports physical health, builds social skills, boosts emotional wellbeing and even helps children focus better on lessons. That all sounds very impressive, but I think most of us learned this without realising it at the time. I certainly did. I have very clear memories of afternoon lessons spent staring at the clock (I must have been the anomaly from the research…), mentally replaying lunchtime drama, still slightly annoyed that the winning goal was the wrong side of the jumper and wondering whether the teacher would notice that I was already planning the rematch. The closer we got to afternoon break, my pencil case was packed away and I was pretending to write with an imaginary pencil so I could leave my desk as soon as physically possible! At Seaford College, play matters because it is fun, because it builds friendships and because it creates memories that stay with children long after the final whistle (or the traditional school bell). The Springfield Courts will soon be the setting for countless games, laughter, dramatic finishes and the occasional disagreement over whose ball it actually was. Thank you, as always, for your continued support of Seaford Sport and for embracing its joyful nature. It has been a pleasure to watch this week unfold, rain and all.

Medical Provision This week, we will be supported by the Seaford College Physio Team, Sport Staff and our Medical Centre.

Feedback from other schools and parents utilising their expertise is strong, while our own experience has been overwhelmingly positive thus far. Wet Weather and Cancellations As a team, we will always do everything within our control to ensure fixtures and recreational activities go ahead as scheduled. Any changes to the schedule will be communicated via the respective sports coaches and clarion call.

Dogs on the School Site We are a dog-friendly site; however, can I remind all parents that dogs should always be on a lead while onsite, and should not be on the field of play. If challenged by a member of staff, please be polite, respect the campus rules and remember that the safety of our students is paramount.

Parents and Supporters – Code of Conduct For our core values (RESPECT, TEAMWORK, COURAGE, TRUST) to be upheld and our sports programme to be truly successful, it takes the cooperation of all involved – players, coaches, officials, staff, spectators and parents. The College and the staff have spent some time and effort reinforcing these sporting values within Seaford, and we believe it is essential that we include parents and friends of the College in this process. One of the key questions we ask all supporters to consider is:

‘How does our touchline behaviour shape character and enhance the enjoyment for all the players during the game?’

Please let the coaches coach so that you can enjoy the parental match day experience. As a team and a college, we value performance and desired learning behaviours over the scoreboard – win, lose or draw, it is about the experience and the students making memories with their friends.
