Welcome from the Director of Sport

This week’s Prep School sporting programme has very much felt like the Summer Term in full flow… athletics tracks busy in the sessions, tennis courts being occupied, cricket squares getting plenty of use and students returning home carrying enough kit to suggest they may actually be moving out permanently rather than attending school for the day.

What has been particularly pleasing over recent weeks is the variety of opportunities currently on offer across the Prep School. Alongside our core summer sports, we are continuing to explore and trial different approaches within both the curriculum and co-curricular programme as part of our wider planning for the next academic year. There have been lots of positive discussions taking place around how we continue to evolve the sporting experience at Seaford, and there is genuine excitement about where things are heading. The Summer Term always provides a brilliant opportunity to strategise, experiment and build momentum for the future.

That thinking links closely to a fascinating recent BBC article discussing the changing landscape of youth sport and the importance of developing adaptable, resilient young athletes through varied sporting experiences, rather than rushing too early into specialisation. At Seaford, we strongly believe in producing well-rounded young people who develop confidence, athleticism, teamwork and enjoyment through exposure to a broad range of activities and challenges. Of course, we love competing and representing the College proudly, but the bigger picture will always matter too.

We are also delighted this week to host the second instalment of our Seaford Sport Webinar Series, this time with Martin Brockman, titled How to Training Like a Champion. Martin shared excellent insight into what high performance really looks like –not glamorous shortcuts or viral moments, but consistency, preparation, recovery, mindset and daily habits. His message strongly reinforced many of the values we are trying to embed within Seaford Sport. Helping students understand that success is often built quietly, through small actions repeated consistently over time, is hugely important and something we speak about regularly with your children

Finally, it would be impossible not to mention how proud we all remain following the recent ISI report, where the College’s Sport and PE provision was recognised as a significant strength. This is a wonderful reflection of years of hard work from across the whole Seaford community – staff, students, parents, coaches and support teams alike. Sport and physical activity play such an important role in the culture and environment of the school, and it was fantastic to see that acknowledged so strongly within the report. It is something we should all be incredibly proud of.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support throughout a very busy and enjoyable Summer Term. The lifts to fixtures, the washing piles, the sideline encouragement and the occasional emergency hunt for missing cricket whites are all very much appreciated.

Have a wonderful weekend, and hopefully the sunshine will reappear soon!

Medical Provision

This week, we will be supported by the Seaford College Physio Team, Sport Staff and our Medical Centre.

Additional Medical Support

To continue to ensure that we are providing proactive, gold-standard care to our students, the school is in partnership with Return2Play, the UK’s leading sports medicine partners for schools. Feedback from other schools and parents utilising their expertise is strong, while our own experience has been overwhelmingly positive thus far.

If you have any queries regarding your account, then please get in touch with Return2Play directly via hello@return2play.org.uk and they will be happy to help. The helpdesk runs 7 days a week.

Wet Weather and Cancellations

As a team, we will always do everything within our control to ensure fixtures and recreational activities go ahead as scheduled. Any changes to the schedule will be communicated via the respective sports coaches and clarion call.

Dogs on the School Site

We are a dog-friendly site; however, can I remind all parents that dogs should always be on a lead while onsite, and should not be on the field of play. If challenged by a member of staff, please be polite, respect the campus rules and remember that the safety of our students is paramount.

Parents and Supporters – Code of Conduct

For our core values (RESPECT, TEAMWORK, COURAGE, TRUST) to be upheld and our sports programme to be truly successful, it takes the cooperation of all involved – players, coaches, officials, staff, spectators and parents. The College and the staff have spent some time and effort reinforcing these sporting values within Seaford, and we believe it is essential that we include parents and friends of the College in this process.

One of the key questions we ask all supporters to consider is:

‘How does our touchline behaviour shape character and enhance the enjoyment for all the players during the game?’

Please let the coaches coach so that you can enjoy the parental match day experience. As a team and a college, we value performance and desired learning behaviours over the scoreboard – win, lose or draw, it is about the experience and the students making memories with their friends. Thank you for your support with this! Successful College sport is built upon strong partnerships between the students, parents and the College.

We look forward to seeing you all on the sidelines, both home and away, and thank you for your continued support of the Seaford Sport programme.
