Welcome from the Director of Sport As I write these notes, I am looking out of the window hoping that the recent wet weather has finally had its say. The good news is that brighter conditions appear to be on the horizon for the weekend, which will be welcomed by everyone involved in sport.

What has been impressive over the last fortnight has been the adaptability shown by both our staff and students. Despite the interruptions caused by the weather, sessions have remained purposeful and enjoyable. Whether that has meant adapting venues, tweaking plans or thinking creatively, the commitment to ensuring our young people continue to have positive sporting experiences has been excellent. My thanks go to both the staff and students for embracing these changes with such enthusiasm.

We are now very much at the business end of the academic year, and the sporting calendar reflects that. Cricket fixtures continue to come thick and fast, athletics competitions are in place and several cup fixtures are still to be played. It is always encouraging to see so many students representing the school across a variety of sports, particularly at a time of year when there are so many competing demands on their time.

Behind the scenes, Sports Day preparations are nearing completion. There will be a few slight tweaks and some new additions that we will be trialling this year. Our aim remains the same: to preserve the traditions and format that make Sports Day such a special occasion, while continuing to enhance the experience and keep enjoyment levels high. Of course, the fierce but friendly rivalry between Springfield and Norwood will once again be at the heart of the day, and I have no doubt the competitive spirit will be as strong as ever.

While much of our focus is understandably on the weeks ahead, planning for next year is already well underway. We have been gathering feedback from students, parents and staff, alongside reviewing our own processes, to ensure that the Prep School sporting experience continues to evolve and remains as positive, inclusive and rewarding as possible for all our young people.

Away from Seaford, there is also plenty for sports fans to look forward to. World Cup fever is beginning to build, and it has been fantastic to hear so many students discussing upcoming international sporting events and looking forward to watching the world’s best football players compete. Let us hope this summer’s tournaments deliver plenty of those “remember when” moments.

On a personal note, my sporting spectator highlight of the past fortnight was the opening match of the State of Origin Rugby League series. For those unfamiliar with it, State of Origin pits Queensland against New South Wales in what I feel is arguably one of the greatest annual sporting contests anywhere in the world. It is a rivalry built on pride, the qualities of the sport showcased are exceptional and the drama rarely disappoints!

This opening encounter certainly lived up to expectations. It had everything: packed stadiums, tribal support, momentum swings, moments of brilliance and a contest that went right to the edge. While we may not quite attract 50,000 supporters to the sidelines, there is something wonderful for the students involved in our own Springfield versus Norwood events. The pride in representing your House, the camaraderie among teammates, the healthy rivalry and the desire to contribute to something together is great at any age, at any level.

This is why House Sport remains such an important part of the Seaford experience, and we look forward to our marquee event, Sports Day, coming up.

Wet Weather and Cancellations As a team, we will always do everything within our control to ensure fixtures and recreational activities go ahead as scheduled. Any changes to the schedule will be communicated via the respective sports coaches and clarion call.

Dogs on the School Site We are a dog-friendly site; however, can I remind all parents that dogs should always be on a lead while onsite, and should not be on the field of play. If challenged by a member of staff, please be polite, respect the campus rules and remember that the safety of our students is paramount.

Parents and Supporters – Code of Conduct For our core values (RESPECT, TEAMWORK, COURAGE, TRUST) to be upheld and our sports programme to be truly successful, it takes the cooperation of all involved – players, coaches, officials, staff, spectators and parents. The College and the staff have spent some time and effort reinforcing these sporting values within Seaford, and we believe it is essential that we include parents and friends of the College in this process.

One of the key questions we ask all supporters to consider is:

‘How does our touchline behaviour shape character and enhance the enjoyment for all the players during the game?’

Please let the coaches coach so that you can enjoy the parental match day experience. As a team and a college, we value performance and desired learning behaviours over the scoreboard – win, lose or draw, it is about the experience and the students making memories with their friends.
