Welcome from the Director of Sport

The Ryder Cup once again captured our imaginations. Few events in world sport match its mix of theatre, tension and pure drama. Watching Europe’s triumph reminded us all of the joy that comes when team spirit drives individual brilliance. Yet, alongside the delight, there was also a pang of disappointment. Some of the etiquette from players and spectators fell short of the respect the game deserves. Golf, at its heart, has always been a sport built on honesty, sportsmanship and courtesy.

That is why it has been so refreshing to see Seaford Golf thriving. Participation is booming, our students are throwing themselves into it and with new developments on the horizon, we are building something very exciting. Golf’s values of respect and integrity are at the core of what we want Seaford Sport to be about.

Which brings us to this weekend. Saturday is shaping up to be a true festival of sport. Twelve rugby teams taking the field in what promises to be mouth-watering clashes between excellent schools; hockey fixtures against Brighton College, always played with great intensity and spirit; the launch of our National Netball campaign; and the introduction of padel to the Seaford programme. It feels like the whole school will be buzzing with activity.

Tennis has also offered our students a unique sporting journey this week, from the history of real tennis through to the modern game and now padel, which is sweeping across schools nationally. It has been brilliant to see our students so open to trying something new and different.

Away from fixtures, it has been a strategic week. Our new courts on Springfield are really beginning to take shape, and the conversations we are having about Seaford Sport’s future are exciting. We are determined to make our strengths stronger, while at the same time creating fresh opportunities for students to discover new passions. That balance of deepening excellence while broadening experience feels key to our vision.

From the perspective of a player, these are the types of matches you will carry with you long after you have left Seaford: the euphoric turnover when your try line is under siege; the rush out to close down a short corner; the extra stride to block the centre pass; the anticipation as the ball ricochets off the glass for the match-winning point. You don’t always remember the score, but you always remember the feeling of competing, of working hard for your mates, of giving everything for the jersey.

So, my challenge to all our students this weekend is simple: step into those moments. Respect the game, trust in your teammates and embrace the excitement of the unknown. These are the occasions that shape you and your team’s identity – not just as players, but as people.

Additional Medical Support

To continue to ensure that we are providing proactive, gold-standard care to our students, the school is in partnership with Return2Play, the UK’s leading sports medicine partners for schools. Feedback from other schools and parents utilising their expertise is strong, while our own experience has been overwhelmingly positive thus far.

I have attached a letter from the College outlining how to use this free service. If you have any queries regarding your account, then please get in touch with Return2Play directly via hello@return2play.org.uk and they will be happy to help. The helpdesk runs 7 days a week.

Wet Weather and Cancellations

As a team, we will always do everything within our control to ensure fixtures and recreational activities go ahead as scheduled. Any changes to the schedule will be communicated via the respective sports coaches and clarion call.

Dogs on the School Site

We are a dog-friendly site; however, can I remind all parents that dogs should always be on a lead while onsite, and should not be on the field of play. If challenged by a member of staff, please be polite, respect the campus rules and remember that the safety of our students is paramount.

Parents and Supporters – Code of Conduct

For our core values (RESPECT, TEAMWORK, COURAGE, TRUST) to be upheld and our sports programme to be truly successful, it takes the cooperation of all involved – players, coaches, officials, staff, spectators and parents. The College and the staff have spent some time and effort reinforcing these sporting values within Seaford, and we believe it is essential that we include parents and friends of the College in this process.

One of the key questions we ask all supporters to consider is:

‘How does our touchline behaviour shape character and enhance the enjoyment for all the players during the game?’

Please let the coaches coach so that you can enjoy the parental match day experience. As a team and a college, we value performance and desired learning behaviours over the scoreboard – win, lose or draw, it is about the experience and the students making memories with their friends. Thank you for your support with this! Successful College sport is built upon strong partnerships between the students, parents and the College.

We look forward to seeing you all on the sidelines, both home and away, and thank you for your continued support of the Seaford Sport programme.
