Welcome from the Director of Sport

It has been one of those weeks where you can genuinely feel the summer sport building real momentum. Not just because of how much is going on (and there is plenty), but because of how our students are going about their business. They are training with purpose, competing hard and, importantly, looking after one another along the way. That is where the real value sits.

A quick but important thank you to you at home. As referenced in the letter earlier this week, your support in reinforcing expectations, particularly around being properly turned out in summer kit and ready to go, really does set the tone. It might feel like a small thing on a busy morning, but it makes a big difference by the time they step onto a pitch or court. We notice it, and so do they…eventually!

Now, on to the good stuff, and what a week it has been.

Tuesday brought a fantastic MCC cricket win, played in exactly the right spirit but with a competitive edge that was great to see. Thursday then followed up in style with both 1st XIs securing excellent victories – always a good day in the office. With a bumper block of fixtures lined up this weekend, we are very much looking forward to seeing that momentum continue.

Our regional Tennis League campaign also got underway on Monday against strong opposition. There was a clear, visible improvement as the day progressed, always a sign that players are thinking, adapting and learning on the go. It was a really valuable experience and a promising start as the tennis season gathers pace.

On the Athletics front, there is still a real buzz following last week’s record-breaking performance at Eastbourne in the Diamond League, where a long-standing Seaford College record was finally toppled. That has certainly sharpened appetites, and attention now turns to the next round at Crawley this week. Expectations are high, but so is the excitement.

Beyond results, what has been particularly pleasing is how students are embracing the “little things” Tidying kit away, supporting teammates, picking up the stray bits around the boundary – nothing glamorous, but all hugely important. An old mentor and great friend of mine regularly said, “We have all got to carry the water.” It still rings true. Teams that get that right tend to do alright.

We were also delighted to welcome Dan Richardson this week, who delivered excellent nutrition sessions to our students. He struck a great balance between insight and practicality, and it was brilliant to see the level of engagement. I would strongly encourage you to join his parent webinar, taking place on Tuesday, 5th May from 7:00–8:00pm, with the joining link being shared later today. It promises to be well worth your time.

Looking ahead, we are excited to launch our Sports Webinar Series in partnership with Independent Coach Education. Our first session, led by Andy Key, will focus on preparing to perform. His work around mindset, resilience and staying composed under pressure is something that resonates far beyond elite sport, and increasingly, we are seeing those qualities develop in our own students.

Finally, a personal thank you to our staff. Alongside a full fixture list, they continue to balance significant academic responsibilities and assessment commitments, all while bringing energy, care and consistency to the sports programme. There is a huge amount of work going on behind the scenes, and it is all driven by a genuine belief in what sport can offer our students.

Wishing you all an enjoyable weekend ahead.

Medical Provision

This week, we will be supported by the Seaford College, Sport Staff and our Medical Centre.

Additional Medical Support

To continue to ensure that we are providing proactive, gold-standard care to our students, the school is in partnership with Return2Play, the UK’s leading sports medicine partners for schools. Feedback from other schools and parents utilising their expertise is strong, while our own experience has been overwhelmingly positive thus far.

If you have any queries regarding your account, then please get in touch with Return2Play directly via hello@return2play.org.uk and they will be happy to help. The helpdesk runs 7 days a week.

Wet Weather and Cancellations

As a team, we will always do everything within our control to ensure fixtures and recreational activities go ahead as scheduled. Any changes to the schedule will be communicated via the respective sports coaches and clarion call.

Dogs on the School Site

We are a dog-friendly site; however, can I remind all parents that dogs should always be on a lead while onsite, and should not be on the field of play. If challenged by a member of staff, please be polite, respect the campus rules and remember that the safety of our students is paramount.

Parents and Supporters – Code of Conduct

For our core values (RESPECT, TEAMWORK, COURAGE, TRUST) to be upheld and our sports programme to be truly successful, it takes the cooperation of all involved – players, coaches, officials, staff, spectators and parents. The College and the staff have spent some time and effort reinforcing these sporting values within Seaford, and we believe it is essential that we include parents and friends of the College in this process.

One of the key questions we ask all supporters to consider is:

‘How does our touchline behaviour shape character and enhance the enjoyment for all the players during the game?’

Please let the coaches coach so that you can enjoy the parental match day experience. As a team and a college, we value performance and desired learning behaviours over the scoreboard – win, lose or draw, it is about the experience and the students making memories with their friends. Thank you for your support with this! Successful College sport is built upon strong partnerships between the students, parents and the College.

We look forward to seeing you all on the sidelines, both home and away, and thank you for your continued support of the Seaford Sport programme.
