Welcome from the Director of Sport

Last week was another wonderful week in Seaford Sport, culminating in a memorable weekend with the Remembrance Service and the Old Seafordian Alumni fixtures bringing together past and present Seafordians across netball, touch rugby and hockey. That strong sense of belonging has seamlessly carried into this week, with students showing genuine pride in representing the school. One student summed it up perfectly: “Playing for the badge, Sir.”

This week my focus is optimism, and I cannot think of a better theme to follow. Progress in sport does not happen by luck or chance; it is driven by culture, belief and daily behaviours. I recently read the words of a behaviour expert who suggested that “optimism is often dismissed as naïve”. But, in truth, optimism might be the ultimate performance tool. It expands what is possible by encouraging us to find solutions, not excuses. It fuels resilience, helping us bounce back stronger after setbacks. And it creates emotional connection, because optimistic teams and individuals generate belief, and belief soon becomes behaviour.

That mindset has been visible in abundance this week. Across every session, there has been purpose and positivity (even during the huge downpours!) with students supporting one another, communicating well and showing a hunger to improve. Genuine student progress is made during these sessions, often unseen by many. When speaking with your children about their sporting experiences, consider how you might reinforce optimism in those moments. Ask what went well before focusing on what could improve. Celebrate effort and attitude as much as the result. The way we talk about sport shapes how young people think about themselves and their potential – and optimism is the bridge between effort and achievement.

Around the campus, rugby and hockey have enjoyed another positive week, with many age groups still progressing into the later rounds of national cup competitions. Our first polo event of the year takes place on Sunday, and our Equestrian team deserves an honourable mention for their impressive performances last week. Blueblood are also offering a discount to the Seaford community (poster attached), and we are excited about the developments underway for future sports kit items.

Our senior students continue to lead brilliantly through their work with LooseHeadz, which will culminate in the upcoming Friday Night Lights rugby event supporting mental health awareness, for which donations are welcome (QR code attached). Looking ahead to the Spring Term, we will run another senior charity week, this time raising money for CoppaFeel, aligned with the opening of our new netball courts. A Friday Night Lights showcase for our senior girls’ hockey is also being explored.

We are also delighted to have welcomed prospective 16+ sports scholar students for our new sport experience day, an initiative designed to immerse them in Seaford Sport and give them a genuine feel for the culture they may soon be part of.

As always, we invite families to join us this weekend to support our senior teams and enjoy another strong round of fixtures. Your children continue to make exceptional progress, driven by belief, hard work and optimism – qualities that remain at the heart of Seaford Sport.

Playing for the badge.

Medical Provision

This weekend, we will be supported by the Seaford College Physio Team, External Medical Provider and our Medical Centre.

Additional Medical Support

To continue to ensure that we are providing proactive, gold-standard care to our students, the school is in partnership with Return2Play, the UK’s leading sports medicine partners for schools. Feedback from other schools and parents utilising their expertise is strong, while our own experience has been overwhelmingly positive thus far.

I have attached a letter from the College outlining how to use this free service. If you have any queries regarding your account, then please get in touch with Return2Play directly via hello@return2play.org.uk and they will be happy to help. The helpdesk runs 7 days a week.

Wet Weather and Cancellations

As a team, we will always do everything within our control to ensure fixtures and recreational activities go ahead as scheduled. Any changes to the schedule will be communicated via the respective sports coaches and clarion call.

Dogs on the School Site

We are a dog-friendly site; however, can I remind all parents that dogs should always be on a lead while onsite, and should not be on the field of play. If challenged by a member of staff, please be polite, respect the campus rules and remember that the safety of our students is paramount.

Parents and Supporters – Code of Conduct

For our core values (RESPECT, TEAMWORK, COURAGE, TRUST) to be upheld and our sports programme to be truly successful, it takes the cooperation of all involved – players, coaches, officials, staff, spectators and parents. The College and the staff have spent some time and effort reinforcing these sporting values within Seaford, and we believe it is essential that we include parents and friends of the College in this process.

One of the key questions we ask all supporters to consider is:

‘How does our touchline behaviour shape character and enhance the enjoyment for all the players during the game?’

Please let the coaches coach so that you can enjoy the parental match day experience. As a team and a college, we value performance and desired learning behaviours over the scoreboard – win, lose or draw, it is about the experience and the students making memories with their friends. Thank you for your support with this! Successful College sport is built upon strong partnerships between the students, parents and the College.

We look forward to seeing you all on the sidelines, both home and away, and thank you for your continued support of the Seaford Sport programme. Blue Blood – Seaford
