BLACK HISTORY MONTH 2022
WELCOME Black History Month is a time when we can recognise the African and African Caribbean community and its role in making Leicester such a rich and vibrant city. It is also an opportunity to take action and make positive changes that can be taken forward throughout the year, whether this is volunteering, participating, supporting local artists and businesses, or taking time for self-education. In 2022 Black History Month Leicester will explore the theme, Independence: A New Time, A New Era, to coincide with sixty years of independence for Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago and the first anniversary of Barbados becoming a republic. Anniversaries are a valuable opportunity for reflection, for listening and learning how the past informs the present. It is encouraging to see the wide range of events on offer, from performances and exhibitions through to talks and community activities. There are many ways that we can work throughout the year to make a difference within Leicester’s communities and strive for the best for our city. I would like to wish the very best to those who have contributed towards Black History Month this year. My thanks go to Serendipity for coordinating this year’s programme and to all the event organisers, artists, volunteers and many others who have given their support. Peter Soulsby City Mayor
Welcome to Black History Month 2022 returning with a multifaceted programme of exhibitions, discussions, films, workshops and performances. In 2022 Black History Month Leicester will centre on interpretations of the theme, Independence: A New Time, A New Era. 2022 recognises a number of anniversaries; 60 years of Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago’s independence, and the first anniversary of Barbados becoming a republic. In the UK it marks 35 years since the first Black female politician, Diane Abbott, was elected to parliament and 35 years since the establishment of Black History Month. In Leicester 2022 marks 40 years since the start of Talking Blues by Herdle White, the longest serving African Caribbean presenter/producer on local radio in the UK. These milestones are part of a complex inter-connecting local, national and international picture. We launch with a programme of new work celebrating artists from the emerging to the established. Local textile designer Kelis Darko and poet Ty’rone Haughton join dancer Rose Aïda in a mixed bill with emerging singer/songwriter, Jada O’Neill. We will celebrate the publication of the third edition of BlackInk, a magazine for Black History Month packed with articles, reflections and interviews exploring topics from Black British music through to voices of independence. There is a rich programme of films centred on the theme of independence across Brazil, Puerto Rico, Jamaica and Tunisia. BlackChat opens up the doors for discussion and providing an opportunity to unpack local history. There is a celebration of music with RUSH – A Joyous Jamaican Journey at the De Montfort Hall and Soweto Kinch Trio at The Y. This is just a snapshot of the full programme. We would like to thank everyone who has contributed to Black History Month Leicester 2022. It is an opportunity to showcase emerging talent and celebrate trailblazers who have paved the way and are deserving of wider recognition. Jada O’Neill is a budding singer/songwriter originally from Barbados and raised in Antigua and Barbuda. O’Neill shapes soulful melodies inspired by her Caribbean heritage and influenced by greats such as Nina Simone and Amy Winehouse. Kelis Darko, an emerging textile designer specialising in fashion print, Darko takes her influences from an amalgamation of West African heritage and the young Black Brit subculture. Having just graduated from De Montfort University, Darko draws inspiration for her work from sculptural African hairstyles, textural plant forms and the abstract lines of Fauvism. Rose Aïda graduated from both Fontys Dance Academy and Northern School of Contemporary Dance in 2017. Aïda worked and performed with Tom Dale Company, Tribe Dance Company, Gecko Dance Company, Seke Chimutengwende, Vocab Dance Company, Alesandra Seutin and many others. Alongside dancing, Aïda writes poetry and spoken word and her work will be an exploration combining her movement practice with her writing. Ty’rone Haughton is a poet focusing on social observations, identity and vulnerabilities. He has performed across the UK on tour supporting artists such as Akala and John Berkavitch. Haughton’s international work has seen him produce writing retreats in The Gambia, Valencia and a European tour with a cohort of other British artists. t 0116 482 1394 w serendipity-uk.com

Tuesday 4 October 6.00pm Dialogue Box Free Presented by Serendipity Institute for Black Arts and Heritage The longest serving African Caribbean radio DJ in the BBC, Herdle White has been presenting shows for BBC Radio Leicester for over 50 years. Starting his radio career with a fiveminute Caribbean roundup, Herdle went on to produce Talking Blues (which marks its fortieth anniversary this year) before the show evolved into the current The Sound of The Caribbean. TIME AND JUDGEMENT Dir: Menelik Shabazz, UK, English, 84 minutes, 1988 An overview of the African Liberation Movement over 400 hundred years, Time and Judgement narrates the tribulations and successes of people from the African Diaspora, establishing a connection between biblical prophecy and the times we are living in. It features archival footage of Maurice Bishop, Walter Rodney, Jesse Jackson, Samora Machel, Haile Selassie of Ethiopia, Bob Marley, Marcus Garvey and others.
CATCH A FIRE Dir: Menelik Shabazz, UK, English, 29 minutes, 1996 This award-winning documentary/drama tells the story of Jamaican Baptist minister Paul Bogle, leader of the Morant Bay Rebellion 1865. This rebellion had a major impact on attitudes to race and empire in Victorian Britain, still present today.
