Director’s Welcome I am delighted to share with you this programme of events for Black History Month (BHM) 2019 in Leicester this October. From exhibitions and discussions to dance, theatre, film and literature, there are events for everyone to celebrate and recognise the importance of African and African Caribbean history, heritage and culture.

The theme for this year’s programme is Archiving the Past, Reflecting the Future, considering the hidden histories of migration and the contribution of the African and African Caribbean diaspora to arts, heritage and culture in the East Midlands over the last century. With exhibitions and talks throughout Black History Month, there are lots of opportunities to get involved and learn more about the stories of trailblazers who have paved the way, and see historical events through different eyes. It is fitting too that many of the resources will be available online and in digital formats, using our past to inform our future. Whilst voices from the African and African Caribbean are not recognised or have been forgotten, Black History Month is as important today as it was when it first started in 1926 in the USA and in 1987 in the UK. Black History Month will launch with Tabanka Dance Ensemble, with their work Rhythm, Roots and Revolution. An embodiment of African and African Caribbean cultural traditions and histories through dance, their work relays visible and invisible knowledge and experiences through the body.

The importance of mental health and wellbeing in the Black community also plays an important undercurrent in this year’s programme of dance and theatre, such as with the artists in BHM Live, Joseph Toonga’s Born to Manifest and One Under, and many community-led events providing opportunities for people to come together.

The BHM film programme returns, in collaboration with Phoenix. This year the films look back at key cultural theorists and leaders such as Frantz Fanon, CLR James and Paul Bogle. Some of the films also reflect on social issues with Claudine and The Man Who Mends Women.

On behalf of Serendipity, I would like to thank everyone who has contributed and supported this fantastic programme of events for Black History Month this year. Black History Month is an opportunity for us all to celebrate, to acknowledge and to learn.

City Mayor’s Welcome Black History Month is an opportunity for Leicester to reflect and celebrate the contributions that the African and African Caribbean community have made to the city. I am delighted that this year’s theme Archiving the Past, Reflecting the Future captures the legacy and influence of Leicester’s diverse communities in shaping the city, from artistic and sporting heroes through to activists and civic leaders.

This year’s Black History Month will feature a wealth of activity from workshops and discussion seminars through to theatre and film, in what I believe to be one of the fullest programmes to date. My thanks to Serendipity for organising this year’s launch and coordinating this fantastic programme, alongside everyone who has contributed to Black History Month 2019 in some way.

Leicester is culturally rich and unique because of people from all backgrounds who have come together to make the city their home, build a life and a shared history. It is with this spirit that I hope you will take the opportunity to enjoy the events taking place throughout October for Black History Month.

LDIF+ Talawa Technique with Thomas Prestø Masterclass Wednesday 25 September 10:00am – 5:30pm Curve RR2 £85

An intensive session with Thomas Prestø on Talawa technique, a fully codified system of body movement rooted in traditional African and Caribbean movement aesthetics; yet relevant in the contemporary. The technique combines rhythmic structures, a specialised approach to grounding, and traditional African aesthetic movement qualities to allow dancers to develop full ownership of their bodies and embrace their own identities.

Tuesday 1 – Thursday 31 October (Monday – Friday, 10:00am – 5:00pm) Vijay Patel Building Atrium, De Montfort University Private View: 1 October, 6:00pm An exhibition exploring over a century of Black British history with key images from each decade of 1910s – 2010s. The exhibition will show the changing face of Black British presence and the cultural contribution made to the East Midlands by the African and African Caribbean community, exploring figures from Larry Gains, a boxer who lived in Leicester during the 1930s, to Ella Fitzgerald’s performances at De Montfort Hall in the 1960s and to Bob Marley’s performance at Leicester Polytechnic (now DMU) in the 1970s. The exhibition will provide a new perspective on cultural and social history of the East Midlands.

Documenting and celebrating the contribution of the African and African Caribbean community to arts, culture and heritage, Serendipity will launch Archiving the Past, Reflecting the Future’s digital archive.

The collections feature original and rare documents and objects alongside oral histories, documentary shorts and archival footage, providing a Black British narrative on art, dance, film, theatre, music and sport in the East Midlands. Every Cook Can Govern: The Life and Work of CLR James

Exploring issues from colonialism to cricket, the film looks at the life of a pivotal historian, journalist and socialist.

Frantz Fanon: His Life, His Struggle, His Work Dir Cheikh Djemai, Algeria/ France, 2001, 52 mins. in French and Arabic with English subtitles, TBC Frantz Fanon was a psychiatrist, originally from Martinique, who became a spokesman for the Algerian revolution against French colonialism. Embittered by his experience with racism in the French Army, he gravitated to radical politics, Sartrean existentialism and the philosophy of Black consciousness known as negritude. The film traces the short and intense life of one of the great thinkers of the Twentieth century.

Catch a Fire Dir Menelik Shabazz, UK, 1996, 29 mins, English This award winning documentary/drama tells the story of Jamaican Baptist minister Paul Bogle, leader of the Morant Bay Rebellion 1865. This rebellion had a major impact on attitudes to race and empire in Victorian Britain, still present today. Paul Bogle is immortalised in the lyrics of many reggae artists like Bob Marley, Third World and Burning Spear.

Founded by Panya Banjoko, with support from Ioney Smallhorne in 2015, there will be simultaneous events taking place in Nottingham, Derby, Birmingham, Bristol and London to raise awareness of and support for Black authors. African Basket Making Workshops

In the lead up to Highfield Rangers fiftieth year celebration, this event will take you back down memory lane. With Caribbean music, artefacts, the “things mama use to say”, dominoes and chat for the entire family. Food on sale on the night.

The weaving of unspun vegetable fibres into a basket is an ancient traditional craft practised across Africa.

Learn how to make a fun and functional basket or a decorative artefact, be as creative as you like once you have mastered the basic principles.
