INTRO DUCTION INTRODUCTION FROM OUR CEO

Welcome to our first Trust magazine celebrating the end of a rather busy autumn term.

One of the main highlights of this magazine is the opportunity to share some of the remarkable activities and achievements that have happened across our family of schools and nurseries.

This year is brimming with new ambition. Most importantly is the commitment to ensure better futures for all our children and pupils but particularly those form disadvantaged backgrounds. These will include children who are eligible for free school meals over the last six years, children with no recourse to public funds and all children who are care experienced. We feel these are the children whom we can make the biggest difference to over this academic year and those to come. It really is the key driver in all we do and the main goal that propels us forward.

I hope you enjoy our first edition.

May I take this opportunity to wish you all a relaxing and restful break and a very merry Christmas. This is the season of Advent, a time of hope and a time to thank you all for your continued support. Our thanks to all staff for their tireless work in investing in the flourishing of our children. Even more thanks to our children for their commitment to their studies and to their futures.

LITTLE ENGINEERS AUTUMN 2023

Sensory Play At little engineers we offer a range of diverse and exciting opportunities for sensory play.

Sensory play has an important role in a child’s learning and development. Much of our learning comes through our ability to use our senses to retain information. Activities that engage all of the child’s senses can help them learn and grow. Sensory play is highly motivating and a lot of fun. As Saffron, the manager says. “ We take pride and delight in planning and preparing these activities. It is so rewarding to see how the children respond to them and how deeply involved they can be” This echoes the Vygoktskian perspective. Vygotsky said that, “In play a child always behaves beyond his average age, above his daily behaviour; in play it is as though he were a head taller than himself.” Sensory play is appropriate for our very youngest babies through all the age stages- including adults! It can be delightfully messy. Offering play opportunities that are not easily replicated at home. It is inclusive and a particularly effective tool for children with SEND, engaging their interest and motivating them to communicate. It also offers many benefits for child development. It helps children to understand how their actions affect what’s around them. It supports brain development, enhancing memory and problem solving. It develops fine motor skills through tactile play. It supports language development, communication and social skills. It encourages creativity, exploration and independent think-ing. It supports emotional regulation by providing a calming effect.

Sensory play can also address two sensory systems that are often overlooked: our proprioceptive and vestibular systems.

The proprioception sense refers to awareness of one’s body. It helps us know where body parts are relative to one another and tells us how much force we need to exert when holding, pushing, pulling or lifting objects. Our vestibular sense, also known as our movement or balance sense, allows us to maintain balance while engaging in activities.

Our School Council and Library Monitors have been working very hard to resource and prepare our library and our new 'corridor' libraries! The School Councillors asked their classes what type of texts they would like in school and some of the staff went to visit Book 66 in Hemel Hempstead.

The children have been so excited with the new books and are enjoying reading them in school and at home.

Our Library Monitors were really impressed with their new hoodies, which they are allowed to wear as part of their school uniform.

Our Year 2 children have really enjoyed their learning about The Great Fire of London. They built some superb structures, which were destined for a toasty end.

After a highly contested competition to name our new pygmy goats, we are pleased to welcome Cookie, Toffee and Brownie to MBPS. They have fitted in perfectly and the children are loving looking after them during the school week and our families are doing a great job at the weekends.

The fire started in the bakery and quickly spread through the neighbouring buildings, as a result of the wooden structures and high winds.

Millbrook Park Values Our recent competition to design badges for our four values has been great fun, with children being awarded them for showing 'Kindness', 'Respect', 'Resilience' and 'Community Spirit'.

Our goat herders have been working hard on feeding and clearing up after the goats. I think they are becoming firm favourites at MBPS.

Our Reading Leader has managed to find us a new addition for our library.

Bailey comes in once a week to sit and listen to the children read to him, which he loves!

The children are so kind to him, making sure that they stay quiet and think about how they move around the library when he is visiting.

Our Black History Month theme this year was Black British fashion designers; with the whole school engaging in design activities and learning about Joe Casely-Hayford. To link with this theme, we set a Half Term Homework Challenge for which children were asked to design an item of clothing and write about their inspiration for it. The fifteen winners visited the 'Missing Thread' exhibition of Black British designers at Somerset House.

After a meditation and an art activity, staff were set a cookie decorating challenge. Below are some of their designs and winner, Ms Zekiqi, receiving her prize.

Lambeth Palace Year 4 had the privilege of visiting the travelling crib at Lambeth Palace. Here they learnt about the Christmas story in depth and it is made real to them by actors telling different aspects of the story in character and there are real animals there too. This is the second time the school have had this experience, it fts in with part of our school vision ‘learning without walls or limitations’. We are very grateful to the annual grant we get from Lambeth Place to enable our pupils to have this valuable learning opportunity.

ST RICHARD'S AUTUMN 2023

Travelling Crib

St Richard's

St Richard’s is a 2024 Superbloom School Despite a competitive selection process, St Richard’s has been chosen as one of 25 schools across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to take part in this year’s Superbloom Schools Project run by the Historic Royal Palaces.

As part of the project, the school will receive funding and advice to transform an unloved outdoor patch in the school grounds into a thriving garden for the wellbeing of the school community and local wildlife. They will also be able to take a group of children to the Tower of London in Summer 2024 to visit the flowers in the moat.

s'drahciR tS The project’s aim is to boost students’ wellbeing, behaviour and academic achievement in the unique ways that only gardening and spending time with nature can bring.

So far, the school’s gardening club has been busy planting spring bulbs to help provide early nectar for the UKs declining bumblebee population. The children also chose and then voted for the name of their Superbloom wellbeing mascot. Please meet Midnight the Raven. The children are now generating three characteristics needed for the project that the raven will represent. Look out for him and our garden developments on the school’s Twitter/X page.

ST PAUL & ALL HALLOWS AUTUMN 2023

SPAH gets baking!

Excitement was at an all-time high at St Paul’s and All Hallows’ Infant and Junior Schools on Wednesday 1st November. Big Has was coming to visit our school and cook with our pupils! Not to mention that the BBC filmed everything.

After selecting a range of pupils across both of our schools, it was time to meet the big man himself. The pupils did not waste any time introducing themselves and expressed how excited they were to not only meet Big Has, but to start making bread with him.

Bis Has delivered a step-by-step lesson on how to make bread.

As you can imagined, it was quite messy at times, but was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Once all the mixing, kneading, proofing and resting was all done, our children took turns to roll out and cook their very own flatbreads.

There was a huge sense of amazement and pride in what they have achieved.

A few interviews with the BBC, it was sadly time to bring the day to an end. To finish off a perfect afternoon of baking and discussing all things cooking, everyone sat down and had lunch with Big Has. Quotes from an article in The London Post: Big Has said: “Food has the power educate, empower and inspire. Bread is an offering of love and togetherness that goes beyond eating, offering moments where you come together with friends and family to connect and share stories. Teaching these kids how to cook flatbread gives them a key skill that they can have for life.”

St Paul’s All Hallows’ pupil, Zakai, 10, said: “When I learnt to make flatbread with Big Has I felt really happy and proud of myself. I think it is very important for children to know how to cook good food because when you have a full stomach, it is much easier to learnt at school than when you have an empty stomach. If you have an empty stomach in the day at school, you are distracted by how hungry you are which makes it really difficult to use your brain properly and enjoy your days at school.”

We have just started this wonderful project at St Paul’s and All Hallows’.

The BIG 3 + ME! It is a Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED) resource for our Early Years and supports pupils to develop and grow the 3 BIG Social and Emotional Learning skills of Self-Regulation, Self-Awareness and Building Relationships.

PEACE - Being - Self-Regulation skills TRUTH - Doing - Self-Awareness skills LOVE - Caring - Building Relationship skills Nursery and Reception have really enjoyed the sessions so far this year.

In our EYFS we have been having weekly sessions which the pupils are enjoying very much.

The EYFS teachers are able to use the materials provided for the lessons and also use the sessions to link to any emotional needs identified throughout the week.

As a school we are really enjoying The Big Three + Me and we think it links really well to ‘The Big Think’ that we teach throughout KS1 and KS2’.

Meet the characters

THE BIG 3 + ME

Meet Paxton the Peaceful Panda, Tao the Truthful Turtle, and Cali the Caring Puppy. These 3 cuddly toy animals will help bring to life 3 BIG Values and 3 BIG Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) skills.

At the beginning of the autumn term, we welcomed Harry from Streetz Ahead to our staff team.

BASE, which stands for Body and Soul Education, is a school-based initiative that provides the entire school community with essential mental health and well-being education for navigating today’s complex society. The overarching goal is to empower the community, ensuring that everyone becomes physically and mentally fit for life.

BASE provides support for our children, parents and staff through offering; ● delivering assemblies ● mentoring sessions in groups and whole class ● wellbeing events ● staff training ● parent workshops To kick-start this amazing program, we had a whole school assembly focusing on understanding mental health in the body.

BASE refer to The Water Check as a way of teaching pupils how to communicate their feelings.

Pupils are encouraged to reflect on their behaviours and attitudes, helping them to develop empathy, resilience and positive communication to strengthen their relationships with those around them.

“Harry helped us to fix our friendships because we kept arguing. We talked about what we were doing to each other that was ruining our relationships. We made friendship rules. We talked about break times and how we should behave towards each other. Some people broke the rules but we know how to fix things now.” - Year 5 pupil.

Through 1-1, group and whole class sessions, pupils are given the tools needed to openly discuss their feelings, develop their own coping mechanisms and to understand when they need to seek help and support from others.

“I like working with Harry because we do fun things. He talks to me about how to stay in the Green Zone and what to do if I am not happy about something.” - Year 2 pupil.

ST MICHAEL'S AUTUMN 2023

75 years, celebrating the Windrush We officially set sail on a learning journey into the past with our new unit ‘Windrush'. What a significant year to celebrate all about this moving generation as it celebrates its 75th year.

Embarking on a journey through time and culture, we immersed ourselves in this topic, heard captivating stories from a local author, stepped into 1948 authentic outfits and explored enriching museums to consolidate all our learning.

A Celebration of Poetry: We loved hearing poems that each year group have been learning in a diverse and exciting performance on National Poetry Day. The whole school embraced different types of poems, creating, performing and delivering.

Seeing the confidence build throughout the performance is great testament to the encouraging audience that were so supportive of one another.

The Arts at St Michael's This year one of our priorities is considering the presence of Music, Art and Design around the school. With that in mind, we were fortunate enough to take the entire school to see Peter Pan on Ice at Ally Pally. The children enjoyed a real celebration of artistic magic.

Exploring New Friendships!

It is always such a joy to see children’s learning come to life, but it is even more tremendous to observe them interacting in person with a real-life hero they have learnt about.

Dwayne Fields is an inspirational TV presenter, adventurer, explorer, and naturalist. Impressively, he claims the title of the first black Briton to traverse the 400 nautical miles to the magnetic North Pole. He has met the late Queen at Buckingham Palace and been awarded the City of London’s highest honour – The Freedom of the City of London – by the Lord Mayor, and now he is also a friend of SASF. Thanks to an Optimal Oracy finalist’s presentation and a family connection, we recently had the pleasure of hosting this intrepid explorer for an unforgettable assembly.

Championing children’s oracy is at the very heart of SASF as we ensure every child has a voice and is heard. October saw the return of one of our most popular Optimal Oracy competition topics: Who is your black history hero?

Whilst we at SASF celebrate and champion the diversity of our school community every day, the Black History Month (BHM) Optimal Oracy is a highly anticipated part of our annual curriculum. Black History Month is a time when we celebrate black history and culture. Initially started in the USA, the UK’s Black History Month aims to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions that black people have made to the UK – many of which are not widely known about. In line with increasing our community’s knowledge and acknowledgment of influential black Britons, the children’s half-term Optimal Oracy home learning was to research and present on a black person in the UK who was the first to do something important and/or made a positive change to the country.

To launch the competition, Diane Shrouder-Johnson – community consultant and BHM champion – spoke to KS2 about the local area’s rich heritage and her own family’s history.

As part of this, she informed the children about the

Reggae Tree. Officially planted on World Reggae Day in 2018 by Dawn Butler MP, it stands in front of the Hawkeye record shop in Craven Park Road. The tree adds to Brent’s cultural landscape and further strengthens its claim of being the capital of reggae in Britain. Following her visit, Dianne kindly agreed to return to be a judge at our oracy final.

Exploring New Friendships!

The competition itself was a fiercely contended battle held in two age group categories (years 3/4 and 5/6). Every child first presented to their class and the winners were selected according to the scores on their feedback rubric. However, it is not all about winning at SASF; there are also the wildcard entries.

Our wildcards are the children who have made a concerted effort or shown great improvement. Both the winners and the wildcard presented in front of the school and to our esteemed judges: Anna Theophilus (School governor, Metropolitan Police), Diane Shrouder-Johnson (Community consultant and company director, Serene One), Pamela Thompson (Life coach and charity worker, Higher Potential) and PC Perez (Police Community Safety Officer).

Heroes chosen by our finalists ranged from Kofoworola Ademola to Winifred Atwell, as well as Rosa Parks, Olive Morris, Bob Marley, David Okusoga, Dwayne Fields and Sidney Poitier. Everyone in attendance learnt something new about one of the children’s selected heroes and their contribution to history. However, no one had expected that they would actually meet one of these heroes in person and hear them present back to us! Having watched his daughter’s presentation, a proud father (smiling from ear to ear) approached the Headteacher to explain that Dwayne Fields was his cousin, and that he would be delighted to organise for him to come in and meet the children.

It is only on very rare, very special occasions that the whole school unites in our Main Hall – and this was no exception! The excitement was palpable as Dwayne introduced himself through a short video detailing his numerous epic global adventures, which appeared to be straight from the trailer of an adventure film.

He went on to describe his humble upbringing in rural Jamaica before he moved to England aged just 6 years old. His formative years in the UK were in inner city London and, wrapped up in social stigma, he became a victim of both knife and gun crime. After a life-threatening incident, Dwayne made the decision to change his life… forever.

In 2010, Dwayne set himself the first of his many challenges, becoming the first black Briton to walk over 400 nautical miles to the magnetic North Pole. On his return he was invited to Buckingham Palace by none other than Queen Elizabeth II, joining other polar explorers and adventurers at a reception to mark the centenary of Scott’s expedition to the South Pole.

Exploring New Friendships!

Throughout his presentation, Dwayne inspired the children to challenge themselves and to face their fears. He spoke eloquently about the challenges he has faced which scared him, and how he overcame them as he refused to let fear hold him back. This message resonated strongly with the children; at SASF, they are always encouraged to try their best and not to let the fear of failure prevent them from achieving their goals. Yet perhaps what was more significant about his presentation was the alignment of Dwayne’s message with SASF’s new school vision: ‘to support one another and build each other up.’ Dwyane spoke of the many people who have inspired and championed him. His proponents include Bear Grylls, who has stated ‘Dwayne is an incredible man who is a huge inspiration to thousands of young people across the UK.’ and Ben Fogle, who attests ‘I’m delighted to endorse Dwayne Fields, I’ve said before how inspired I am by people like Dwayne. It takes a lot of courage, tenacity and will to start a challenge of this nature, as I know myself. I love the fact that he has broken the mould, and that he actively seeks to inspire young people particularly in our inner cities, to explore the countryside and to embark on and embrace challenges of their own.’

Year 6 were particularly keen to accept Dwayne’s offer to return to SASF later in the year when they are reading ‘Shackleton’s Journey’. Excitingly, Dwayne and Ben Fogle recently joined forces to relive the Antarctic journeys of Captain Robert Falcon Scott, Sir Ernest Shackleton and Roald Amundsen as part of a new series for Channel 5. The men will rely on Edwardian equipment, food and shelter as part of ‘Endurance: Race to the Pole’. For Year 6, having the opportunity to ask questions of someone who has lived the experience will deepen their understanding of the conditions of the Antarctic, the historical context of the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration, the geography of the area and, inevitably, improve their descriptive writing.

It is one thing to learn about your heroes through books and the internet, but it is quite another to have them standing in front of you. As Dwayne told the children about his upbringing, they witnessed a hero with experiences and a background parallel to their own. As he awed them with a sense of what they could achieve, the children hung off every word and followed with endless questions for Dwayne, eager to learn more about his adventures and motivation. Perhaps, in those moments, the dreams of our future explorers were awakened.

What a term we have had at Meridian Angel. We would like to say a huge thank you to all the families, governors and children for fully engaging with the learning provision we have delivered, and we look forward to an action-packed, purposeful 2024. You have been amazing, and we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year.

September 2023 • We started off the school year with a carnival • Similar to the Notting Hill Carnival, we embraced the vast range of backgrounds we have at school • We celebrated this by spending a week learning about different cultures in-line with our value of Friendship • The week culminated in our very own Meridian Carnival, which was held out on the school grounds: o we had colourful outfits; o we had dancing; o we had fun; o and we learnt about each other.

• This set us up beautifully for the year ahead.

Sara, Y2, said: We learnt the Haka dance. We loved it.

Meridian Angel October 2023 • We ended the first half-term with a Black History Month (BHM) celebration.

• This was televised – Enfield TV came in to record proceedings.

• We had over 90 family members join us in the school to celebrate the children showcasing all their learning.

• The children through poetry, art and music we able to share what they had learnt across the month of October with our values of Hope and Resilience at the fore.

• We had several guests across the month: o Remi (group Streets All Salute – SAS) rapper – launched BHM with an assembly. o Raphael Shields (investment banker) o Sifu Garry (Kung Fu expert) o Robert Samuda (BAFTA award winning gardener) • All the guests added to and contextualised the children’s learning as they were able to share their stories of Hope, Resilience and Friendship on their path to where they are today.

Meridian Angel November 2023 • We launched our sustainability initiative, which is to grow our own produce and become self-sufficient.

• In collaboration with a local developer, we started the first step. We took all the children to an allotment, and we learnt about gardening.

• With support from BAFTA award winning gardener, Robert Samuda, all our children went to visit Meridian Gardens.

• They learnt about how to become sustainable and all the different ways you can grow your own produce.

• Robert will be supporting the next phase of our sustainability initiative, which will launch in the Spring Term.

• All the children will be allocated a planter, and we will be growing our own produce on the school grounds with a view to sharing with the local community (food banks and care home) as well as consuming this ourselves through support from the school chef.

Reading Strategy A refreshed, new approach and new look was needed to transform reading to the highest priority at Stanwell Fields. We started with the recently updated Ofsted review into Reading. It gave us plenty of inspiration and also confirmation we were thinking along the right lines. From here it just grew...

Phonics is the answer We started with a revamp of our Read, Write Inc. provision with support from another LAT school. We structured the timetable to maximise the number of groups, made a significant investment in resources and, importantly, learning environments. We also invested in our greatest asset, our staff, with new RWInc. training; our Early Reading Leader free every morning to coach people to be their best and fortnightly ongoing CPD.

Fresh Start-phonics for KS2.

As a school we have high mobility with significant numbers joining our school in-year. Within 48 hours of joining, new pupils are assessed for reading, maths and writing. From these results we can ascertain if pupils need to go into a phonics group. Following on from CPD, we introduced Fresh Start as a more age appropriate phonics lesson for our KS2 learners with good success.

Destination Reader As a structured approach worked so well for phonics, we researched Destination Reader, being used in other trust schools, and felt it would work for our pupils. Following Reading Leader training, in Summer 2023 we had a soft start with the trained staff members trialling it and CPD rolled out to teachers. From September we have been using Destination Reader for dedicated reading lessons through core texts in Key Stage 2. It is timetabled at the same time as phonics. Once children graduate from Read Write Inc, they participate in Destination Reader.

Libraries like book shops…

As a school on two sites, our Junior based library was a timetabling headache for our infants. Furthermore, it was not infant friendly. A new wall and repurposed books shelves, as well as fresh new books and voila... an infant library and dedicated Read, Write Inc. Hub was established.

Classes are timetabled to visit the library every week.

However, we then realised the Junior library needed much more investment as books were old, getting tatty and did not reflect the diversity of our pupils nor represent everyone. So we transformed our library into a glorious colourful and enticing space with books displayed in subjects and genres, front facing books to engage and a layout like a real book shop with multiple copies so pupils can share their reading experience. KS2 Pupils have dedicated timetable space for the library.

Reading Ambassadors

Dream Reads Book Corners looked drab, dreary and over stocked making choosing a bit overwhelming. So we welcomed in ‘Dream Reads’ 25 (x2) carefully selected books for each Year Group and Class.

Reading Ambassadors Meet our Reading Ambassadors... Their recommended reads are evident throughout the school. They also keep our reading areas appealing to all.

Curl up in book nooks Sometimes sitting at a desk is not the way you fancy reading... So we created book nooks for our pupils across the school - EYFS too!

Secure connections with the Trust Board; with our Chair, members and trustees, that confirm and build personal value are pivotal to our success. These relationships set the platform for learning and impart confidence with which to approach the future. Wellbeing is also foundational to the Christian narrative, which does not promise the absence of challenge or suffering but rather offers a grounded, holistic vision for our lives- social, moral, cultural, physical, spiritual- in essence, “life in its fullness.” The prophet Jeramiah shows us that the fruits of flourishing are dependent upon the roots of well-being: “But blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear what heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”

With this in mind, our journey to revisit our vision began. If we are to learn together, for the betterment of the communities that we serve, then we must be in a position of understanding linked to where we were at the beginning of our journey when the trust was established, and where we are now, as one family. Our collective beliefs, values and actions will shape a shared structure, will define our journey moving forward and will support a shared culture.

CEO article We began to build this culture last January 2023 by revisiting out vision. We feel our vision is the compelling higher purpose that inspires us and acts as the source of all we do. Board members and trustees joined school leaders and local academy committee members to reflect and grow together. Later on in the year, a small committee was formed to evaluate progress to date.

I am honoured to share the final version of our vision with you: Our schools serve the whole community where all are welcomed valued and supported. We aim to enrich the life experiences of all the children and families we come into contact with helping our children to grow spiritually, mentally as well as academically. We seek to have a broad curriculum where all faiths are honoured within a Christian context.

Jesus promised a life in all its fullness which means that we value each person as the individual God made them to be; we encourage creativity and teamwork in our schools; we encourage forgiveness and put others’ needs before our own; we actively encourage everyone to work to care for creation; learning the full range of subjects (including Religious Education) and always aiming for excellence. Daily Collective Worships is provided as a space to ask big questions, reflect on what is happening in the world around us and pray. Put simply, our schools are life-giving.

This result clearly illustrates what belonging means for us.

Local Academy Committee Opportunities Await You! Discover a rewarding opportunity to make a meaningful impact on education as a Governor! The LDBS Academies Trust & Trust 2 proudly oversee 10 schools across London, each supported by a dedicated Local Academy Committee body (LAC). We are currently seeking passionate and committed individuals to join our LACs and contribute to the strategic management of our schools.

As a local governor, you will play a crucial role in shaping the future of education in your community. Responsibilities include involvement in development plans, budget monitoring, community engagement, stakeholder collaboration, staff and pupil wellbeing, and oversight of safeguarding and SEND provision. This is your chance to actively participate in the growth and success of our schools.
