THEME PAGE Express Yourself in Color Rainbow Nation is a term coined by Desmond Tutu when referring to the nation of South Africa post-Apartheid. It was used to highlight the multicultural population of the country as well as its newfound acceptance of diversity. A rainbow nation is not only a country but a way of life.

The theme, Express Yourself in Color, is so fitting for this year’s yearbook because it is a celebration of LCS’s various and diverse personalities, as well as recognizing the safe space that is our school community for both the staff and the students.

Shout out to Hala Jabeile, the only veteran member of the group, who did an amazing job getting pictures and quotes from all the elusive seniors and designing the senior pages, among innumerable other tasks she managed for the yearbook this year.

The yearbook staff this year was almost entirely new to the process, but we've loved learning how to make a yearbook and having the opportunity to create something that will embody this school year and last for years to come. We started off with several defined roles (photographer, designer, reporter, etc.), but over time those lines began to blur, and by the end almost everyone had taken their turn at photographing events and designing pages.

Special credit for creativity goes to Roopali Vaswani, who designed the yearbook cover (more about her on the last page), and then decided she wanted to design the inside too, and ended up scrupulously picking all the different colored borders for each student portrait, as well as designing a number of other colorful pages. Our yearbook crew was relatively small this year, but we ranged from grades 6-12, and had a lot of different perspectives to add. Everyone in the yearbook staff deserves a special mention, because it took all of us to show how LCS can Express Itself in Color.

Head of School I write this message on the day of our now annual Mother Tongue language assembly, on the eve of our cherished International Day. It has, once again, filled me with pride at belonging to such a culturally rich learning community. There's a special kind of creative energy here at LCS that comes from more than just the natural hustle and bustle of campus life; there’s an incredible spirit of togetherness and diversity of perspectives that come from students, families, faculty and staff representing more than 60 nationalities. Never forget that it takes work -- at times hard work -- building an inter-cultural community. Here in my third year as the Head of School at LCS, I remain convinced of the power of our mission, vision, shared values, and approaches to teaching to serve as the “secret sauce” in fostering international mindedness, in sustaining our community, and in preparing students for our increasingly interconnected world.

Ever wondered what it is the PTO really does at LCS? Being a part of the SRC for the past four years has allowed me to experience so many challenges, yet also have fun. Of course each year there were new grade representatives and executive members, but the SRC never failed to host popular events such as Chopped, Lincoln Factor, Quiz night, and more. This year was different. The SRC pushed for students' voices to be heard and gained respect from the administration of Lincoln. We gave students a voice, and acted upon any concerns they shared with us. To me, that was the most impactful process through my years being a student representative. This year, we changed what it means to be a part of SRC and we created a new event, the town hall, that ensures that years from now, Lincoln students are heard. My fellow SRC executives, Bryce, Noora, Kyla, and Daniel, our crazy arguments during meetings, and our last minute editings of the Monday Assembly slides just made this journey much more memorable. To our SRC supervisors, Mr. Dzorkpata and Mr. Duffield, I appreciate you guiding me through the process of understanding what it means to be a president and a leader. And lastly, to everyone in our Lincoln community, thank you for respecting the SRC through participating and helping us in planning and carrying out events. I am proud to leave Lincoln knowing I have helped create a change within the SRC.

SRC Grade Representatives

Bersabel Tesfamariam Dillion Ansah This year has flown by so fast. It feels like it was yesterday when we were all texting, calling and talking among each other during summer about how scared we were for high school. Not to our surprise, our grade's incredible skill of making even the most overwhelmed times into moments of laughter and joy has helped us to this point and will keep us going! Being a Grade rep has had its ups and downs, but has overall been such an unforgettable and rewarding experience. So thanks to 9th grade for giving us this opportunity!

It has been an honor for both of us to serve our classmates over the course of this academic year. Specifically, we are grateful that we had the opportunity to create a tenth-grade experience that provided students with a memorable last year in the MYP, through a multitude of events and ideas. There were breakfasts provided by students and the PTO, free homeroom periods where students got to play sports in the MPH, an improvement in communication and announcements, and the release of apparel that captures the essence of our diverse and talented class. Both of us are proud of the journey our class has gone through this year, especially our successes and achievements in various fields. It has been one of the most turbulent times of our lives, and our ability to navigate through the stress and adversity has been remarkable.

Being the grade representatives for eleventh grade has been both fulfilling and challenging. The main goal for grade representatives is to embody the voice of our peers in order to enhance not only our grade but the LCS community as a whole. The biggest achievement throughout the year was organizing the overnight retreat. This was the first time in years that an overnight retreat was planned successfully, which was very exciting to be a part of. Another big accomplishment was helping the SRC executives plan out and execute the town hall meeting. This was an important event since it helped students voice what they feel in a safe environment. Overall, being student representatives has been a wonderful experience.

Being grade reps in our senior year has shown us that everything is achievable if you believe in yourself. It was something we never saw happening as we deviate a bit from the social norms of a grade rep: “best and most serious student”. Although it hasn’t been all roses, as we’ve had to juggle this task with other academic tasks, we are grateful that our classmates entrusted us with this great responsibility. This goes to show that by believing in yourself and taking that first step, you’re setting yourself up, unknowingly, for others to believe in you too. 19

Excitement, fun, frolicking, and lots of laughs! Our LCS CommUNITY picnic is an annual favorite that offers all that and more. 2019 was the best yet! Student leaders and faculty volunteers created an easy-going environment to catch up and meet up and offered a host of games and activities for all ages. Our LCS annual CommUNITY picnic is always a funfilled event to have a great time, and connect with one another. Look at those faces! Pictures worth a thousand words!

This year, the PTO wrapped up our annual LCS-PTO Bazaar on the 23rd of November, 2019. Due to the great support from volunteers, faculty, staff and students, we were able to generate the funds to finance all initiatives/ programming we have planned for the upcoming year. With the participation of 160 local vendors and 1400+ shoppers/attendees(choose one), we were able to drive some momentum into the local economy. Thank you to all help spread the word. Madagascar

The Middle School produced an amazing play, based on the Dreamworks film Madagascar. Madagascar was about how the four main characters, Alex, Marty, Melvin, and Gloria found themselves trapped on an island (Madagascar) and wandered into the jungle only to find annoying Lemurs led by King Julian. Over time, Alex finds himself turning wild, and itâ€™s up to Marty to rescue him from the foosa (a type of hyena) and bring him back before a boat returns to take them back to Central Park Zoo.

Over 80 people took part, and everyone performed fantastically. It was infused with colors and African print costumes, and there was attention to every detail, including the transitions for each scene. Everyone had an important role to play, even the backstage crew, without whom the show couldnâ€™t have taken place. International Festival Day 2020 was celebrated with stories and performances from around the world! The beautiful Parade of Flags represented 62 countries from Argentina to Vietnam and brought smiles, claps, and cheers from the crowd, which included honored guests from a number of embassies and high commissions. Since I joined LCS in Grade 10 I have been a part of MUN. I joined without any experience nor knowledge. Now three years later, I am one of the few MUN veterans and have attended JoMUN 3 times. I still remember going as a Sophomore was incredible, the best decision I could have possibly made. I had 2 weeks of experience and sat in the middle of the General Assembly with 29 other delegates surrounding me. I remember shaking nervously as I had to approach the floor to make my points. This was my introduction to MUN. Fast forward 3 years I just attended my last conference in late September 2019 as a Senior. This time, in the most advanced council, still nervous but ready to begin debate. I will never forget the cold breeze in the morning before I enter my forum to begin debate, the hundreds of notes lying on my desk and the hunger for debate. In September 2019, 20 students and 2 LCS chaperones attended the 17th annual Johannesburg Model United Nations (JOMUN) conference in South Africa. Aside from the conference, which featured several schools from across the African continent, there were also a few days of cultural excursions which permitted LCS students to experience Johannesburg from a tourist perspective. Many of the LCS delegates were attending their first MUN conference in Johannesburg and it proved to be an invaluable learning opportunity for them. Much of what was learned was then applied at our own GHAMUN conference a few months later.

Being responsible for delegate and chair training for the 19/20 MUN team has been a privilege. I have been lucky to work with some extremely dedicated and motivated delegates and chairs who have accepted their large responsibilities and set an example for others to follow. At all conferences that we attended, I was particularly impressed by the many new delegates who joined our team this year and who exceeded expectations by using all challenges as opportunities for learning and improving.

The Village of Hope (VoH) Orphanage was started by Christians in the United States and Ghana in 1989. Its mission was to care for orphaned, abandoned, destitute, and needy children. Since its establishment, many poor, hungry, homeless, and hurting children have been cared for. It has two branches, one at Fetteh near Kasoa and the other at Ayawaso, Pokuase. Apart from providing nursery, primary, and junior high school education, VoH offers employable vocational skills like dressmaking, auto engineering, and fashion design to street children. At the Pokuase branch, they mainly deal with teenage street children who stay for about 2 years learning skills like dressmaking, auto engineering, hairdressing, leatherwork, and tailoring. LCS VoH club over the years has been engaged in teaching Math, English, and Art education. We share simple and easy ideas on how to learn these subjects. The children range between those with formal education to those who have never been to school. This school year we plan to continue to share ideas and establish possible CAS related joint projects.

Bolinas Academy is a local Ghanaian school that offers education for the children of Abelemkpe. This is an elementary school that is composed of about 60 children, all seeking a better future. The point of this CAS group is to better the school infrastructure, develop bonds with the children, and out of everything help 20 students every month, to spend 4 hours of joy. The team is composed of students of all high school ages, and boasts one of the most dynamic and willing groups of young leaders. This year, our objective was to paint the school wall, professionally, with sufficient plastering and long-lasting paint, so that students of that school could leave behind their legacy and play a role in what their facilities look like.

What a superb experience this year’s WAISAL Band was! Dr. Smart, our director, came from the University of Montana in the US, curious to explore West Africa and ready to share his rich musical knowledge with us. We had some easy music that we found we could play with such expression and feeling when we came together as a band of nearly 80 in Abuja! We also had some much more challenging music that pushed our limits, made us come together as an ensemble, supporting and helping each other despite the competitive edge that usually exists between WAISAL schools! I remember the day when mummy and duddy told 10-year-old Bryce that he will be moving to Ghana. Long story short, tears were involved. However, I’ve gone through an incredible journey filled with wonderful memories. I want to acknowledge those who really made my time at LCS worthwhile. After 3 years at LCS, this love-hate relationship has finally come to an end. Having been a planner, I’ve always had a set order of how things were supposed to happen in my life– even including the countless moves, Ghana was never part of it. However, moving here taught me that sometimes the best things in life occur unexpectedly, and even though it took me too long to realize that, I couldn’t be more thankful. To my parents, I will forever be indebted to you not only for this privileged life but for letting me be everything I’ve wanted to be. High school has been a very turbulent experience for me, loaded with high highs, and low lows. The best advice I can give at this moment is to find something that you’re passionate about and pursue it. And whatever it is, be genuine about it. It’s been awesome being a part of this community. Being the new kid was tough, but you made fitting-in the last thing on my checklist. It’s been two years since then and despite all the snakes, most of you stayed close and are making the rest of my days here memorable. Mistakes were made, arguments ensued, fights were fought, but we stood together regardless and made it through the years, technically just a year and a half...give or take a few days. I’ll remember Lincoln for many reasons and the food isn’t one of ‘em. Lincoln gave me life-long friends, taught me character, and, coming from a school filled with just guys, this is a heck of an upgrade, if you get my drift. I appreciate all the teachers, specifically mine, for guiding me through the IB DP Program. Without their encouragement and persistence, I definitely would have made it this far...but it just wouldn’t have been as smooth of a ride as it was. All formalities aside, I appreciate all who made me happy and those who’ve just been an annoyance since the beginning. I’ll miss you guys, mostly the girls, and indeed “it feels great to be a lion.”

The time flows very fast, faster than I imagined. Many of my dreams came true and by the time I had new ones that I am planning to be a real. I can remember the first time when I rode an airplane, which was the first dream to come true. One lesson that I learned from my short journey is dream big but be realistic. I am going to learn more lessons, however at this point I want to thank every person that lead me to who I am now. Living two years in Ghana gave me a chance to discover the culture and people. Before, Ghana was just a country on the map that never came to mind but now it is a great experience. I really love the Ghanaian textile colors and how nice the people are. Studying two years in Lincoln Community school added a lot to my experiences and personality. I had great and supportive friends, I had a surprise party for my 18 birthday and more and more that can not be counted on two hands. After two years here, and many other years I am finally graduating high school. I am excited to know what will happen next.

Even from my first few days in Lincoln, I felt how accepting and supportive the community was. The group of friends I made only made this more apparent. There was always one of them there willing to help me in any way. Without any of this, I feel as if I would have hardly been able to go through with high school. In the end, however, I made it. All the late nights, exams, and stress filled weeks were made worth it by the constant positivity I received from all the people close to me.

When I arrived in Ghana and started seventh grade at LCS, I knew I had many years and adventures ahead of me in my epic middle school and high school experience. Now, this wild era of glory, stress, joy, fantasticness, and everything else is coming to an end and I’m sad to be graduating (fingers crossed), meaning I have to leave this beautiful place and these beautiful people. However, I still look in wonder towards the future the same way I did six years ago. When I first came to Lincoln I was a girl with an irrational dream and irrational fears to suffer bullying once again just like my past experiences, and I was so afraid of people and having relationships with them, but thanks to the beautiful community we are in, I found the amazing people that I am proud to call my friends. Natasha, for taking care of me since day one. Habiba, for taking pictures of me, which is a rarity. Lincoln helped me give an academic sense to my ideologies and I grew not only academically but especially as a person. I am facing a bad mental issue and I must thank my “sisters” for saving me, loving me and especially understanding even the weirdest aspects of me. I want to thank my beautiful family, not only for teaching me important lessons about life but also because of the incredible example that you are for me, which contributed to the idealization of my biggest dream. I find it almost impossible to identify with the version of myself who started Lincoln nearly four years ago. Much less confident and sure of myself than I am today, I remember feeling both excited and exhausted as I attempted to figure out my new life. This makes me even more grateful for the fact that I was welcomed so warmly by a group of people who I feel lucky to still call some of my closest friends. With your help, LCS to me quickly became inseparable from activities such as football, MUN, and many more.
