Letter from the Editor: College Deadlines Approach with a new perspective about the future

As college deadlines are approaching I can not help but highlight this time in my life and in most of the senior classes lives. College always felt like a long way away, people would always tell you to start thinking about your future and the realities of what life will be like after high school. It doesn’t hit you until you see all your friends applying to colleges and all of a sudden you find yourself doing the same thing.

We know college isn’t the end all be all of everything. There are always other options, whether that’s learning a trade or joining the army. However, college is the reality for most students at Lincoln including myself. Someone count the number of times I say “college”.

Receiving a college acceptance letter for the first time was a conflicting experience. On the one hand, you just got into college! You did it! All the hard work you’ve done throughout high school and being recognized by a college of your choice feels amazing.

You feel relief because you’re almost done but then you realize that you’re almost done.

It’s the same feeling I got when the class of 2024 received their graduation date or when I found myself making friends with underclassmen and realized, “Oh I’m not in 9th grade

anymore.” I’m growing up. And for the most part that’s okay. There is more out there for me and for all of us. Yes, it is cheesy but it’s important.

I’m writing this for all seniors including myself. As we start this new chapter in our lives and continue through, that we remember it’s going to be alright. As we are approaching the last half of our high school experience I can’t help but think about how far away this all felt. I’d see the other classes graduate, shout out to the class of 2023 miss ya’ll, and I think to myself ,“That’s not going to be here anytime soon” and suddenly it is. I accept that I can’t run away from it so you might as well just face it head-on. And it’s not like there isn’t a load of things to look forward to the accomplishment of walking across the stage finally, decorating your caps, and partying ‘till you can’t feel your legs because for some reason you wore high heels. Those are the memories we should cherish and after all of this it is what we will remember.

All of us are destined for something, something amazing, and even when we leave Lincoln the world will have so much to offer us. But it’s scary.

It’s so scary. But we won’t be alone, although it can feel isolating at times.

Like a whirlwind of emotions; however, being able to find community October 2023

in other people can make this whole college experience a lot less isolating.

Finding ways to reach out and hang out even though we are all at the peak of our stress and busyness, checking in on people however that looks like to you, and taking time to relish and remember that we are all in the same boat and it’s up to us to keep each other afloat. Even past the scholarship and the deadlines making sure that we remember what’s important. Hold each other accountable. I hope that even with all of this pressure on yourself from family, counselors, or even teachers, we still try to remember each other.

The Road to College: Navigating the Application Process with Confidence Important advice and information about applying to colleges

By Sarah Gouddou, Co-Editor “Get started,” says Kathleen Mahan, the College and Career Counselor for Lincoln College Prep.

Mahan shared invaluable advice for students embarking on their college journey. With years of experience guiding students through the tumultuous application process.

Mahan emphasizes the importance of applying early and finding the right fit for you. She explains the significance of choosing a college not solely based on location and scholarships but also on remembering to account for whatever you prioritize. Whether that be Greek life, sports, campus culture, etc., numerous different aspects are in play when choosing the right college for you, and according to Mahan, when finding a college that resonates with your aspirations, only then can you create a fulfilling education experience.

Mahan plays an important role in Lincoln by aiding every senior in applying to college, financial aid, and scholarships. Her advice for seniors, “Get started on your applications because there are November 1st deadlines for many colleges and scholarships. That’s my advice, right now, get started and get going,” she said. “Many students start their resumes and essays during the summer since school makes everything get hectic. However, you should start by September, at the

very least October. Don’t hesitate if you are unsure where to start, look online for other sources, or reach out to your peers.”

Mahan stresses the significance of building applications early on, maintaining a solid GPA, crafting a compelling personal essay, showcasing a handful of strong extracurriculars, and obtaining letters of recommendation. The earlier you start, the better, especially if you’re a new high school student.

“Since anything you do in middle school helps build you as a person, you should start exploring those passions by 9th grade.

During that year, everything begins to be permanent which means it’s important to start on a good note. Joining any sort of club whether it’s dedicated to music, sports, or whatever. Just joining them or especially serving in a leadership position. Colleges are always looking for leaders,” Mahan said.

“I also think that students shouldn’t spread themselves out too thin because then you can’t show how passionate you are. Focus on a handful of extracurriculars and then some out-of-school hobbies, just make sure whatever it is you do relates to your interests and future.”

Campus culture is important because it creates a sense of community, fosters personal growth, and provides opportunities for students to explore their interests while building lifelong connections. Mahan explains how to ensure that you choose the right college.

“I think it’s all about campus culture October 2023

because you are going to be living there, in essence, it is your new home and your new family. So if you feel out of place or don’t like the campus culture, you’ll inevitably be miserable,” she said. “I would not recommend you apply to any specific college just because it may be a good fit. So, you need to consider your college major and visit the campus to see if it’s a good fit for you because everyone is looking for something different. Of course, you have to remember whether you can afford it. I would research wherever you hope to go before you apply anywhere. I went to UMKC twice and loved it. I played volleyball there, and then got my Master’s at South Dakota State University.”

World History teacher Linda Bishop, graduated from Rockhurst with a Master’s in Education with a concentration in Literacy Education.

“The experience I had at Rockhurst was amazing, it was a new program and we got to expand it as we saw fit with our new professor who was also amazing. After my Master’s, I stayed as an adjunct professor.

Although I didn’t learn about literature, I learned about education and political views that impact education, especially in this area. I would recommend this college! No doubt. You cannot fail, it’s open, it’s affirming. The curriculum and the experience are just amazing, it was life-changing.”

“I went to the University of Missouri-Columbia otherwise known as Mizzou,” said Journalism teacher Robyn King. “I learned

a lot about working in the real world at Mizzou. I was able to work in commercial radio, in the sports athletic department and also in the alumni office providing tours for prospective students. I would recommend Mizzou to upcoming graduates.

It prepares you for the real world with the opportunities it provides its students not only in Missouri but also out of state.”

Mahan reminds students that this is the time to plan. She highlights the importance of early preparation for college applications, choosing the right major, and exploring potential colleges.

Planning early on is crucial for students to set themselves up for success in college and beyond.

Mahan urges students to research schools they are interested in to ensure they find a college that aligns with their interests, values, and goals. By considering the campus culture, students will ensure that they will have an enriching and fulfilling experience in college. She also encourages students to research and visit campuses, talk to current students, and attend college fairs to gain an understanding of the unique atmosphere and community at each college. This way, students can make an informed decision that goes way beyond just the name of the college.

“Remember, it isn’t just about getting into college; it’s about finding the right college that will support and nurture your passions and dreams,” Mahan said.

Plans After Graduation Class of 2024

By Skylah Canady High school students learn many things from high school in which prepares them for college or the real world. Students also are expected to know their plans after high school graduation.

Three LCPA students share their college plans and their experiences as they’ve matured through high school.

Senior London Smith expects to enjoy her future college experience. Smith expects to attend an HBCU. “The University of Arkansas Pine-Bluff,” Smith said. “I want to major in Forensic Chemistry and minor in Psychology to become an Evidence Technician.”

Senior Sanay Owens is a partial IB candidate, softball player, and has a love for basketball. She has been a varsity basketball player for Lincoln’s girls basketball team for all of her four years of high school.

“I have applied to Norfork State University in Virginia and Langston University in Oklahoma,” said Owens.

Owens has been aware since she was a sophomore that she has always wanted to attend college out of state instead of in her hometown.

“I don’t think its ‘is college for me’ it’s more of what I want to do and how will I make a difference in my family,” Owens said.

“Both of my parents went but never finished college, and I want to set an example for my little sister but also show my parents you can still finish,” Owens said.

the road of attending college with hoping to become an inspiration for her family and herself. However, Owens expects to go to college immediately after high school and is not expected to do a gap year after graduation.

“I expect to go to college immediately because I have decided to become a doctor and there is no time to waste when it comes to that.”

Jenise Washington, another senior Lincoln student, is a flag football star, and plays Varsity for both Lincoln’s girls basketball team and softball team since her freshmen year.

Washington discussed how high school prepared her for college and how her future career goals.

“High school prepared me for college because it made me independent and prepared me for what was about to come next,” Washington said.

However, Washington is still undecided about her plans after high school.

“I see myself as a really good business person. Not selfish and helping out my community,” Washington said. “My expectations for graduation are to continue to keep my grades up and know what to do next throughout my life and prepare myself for adulthood.”

The Queen B in Kansas City The last city on the Renaissance Tour

By London Smith & Lillian Fraizer In a dazzling spectacle that will be etched in the memories of Kansas City residents, Beyoncé took the stage at T-Moblie Center on Oct. 1, 2023 for a concert that transcended the boundaries of entertainment.

Starting in Stockholm, Sweden on May 10 and ending in Kansas City, Missouri this included Beyonce performing 56 shows with 2.77 million people attending and making $579.8 million in the box office according to Entertainment Weekly. This tour was also the 8th highest grossing tour of all time, the 2nd highest grossing tour by a female artist, and the highest ever by a black woman.

Beyonce’s oldest daughter Blue Ivy Carter, danced beside her for the majority of the tour as well and announced her upcoming film “Renaissance: A Film by Beyonce” in theaters Dec. 1, 2023.

The eagerly awaited event brought together fans from all walks of life, transforming the arena into a pulsating hive of excitement.

“I had an amazing time. Although, we did have to wait a while for her to come out,” said Moriah Davis, 14. “All the silver outfits were great, and they definitely went all out. My favorite part of the performance was when Blue, Beyonce’s daughter, came out and danced. When she was finished, everyone cheered for her and she got a little emotional.

Overall, it was super fun and was for sure a once in a lifetime experience.”

As the lights dimmed, signaling the commencement of the evening’s festivities, Beyoncé emerged in a breathtaking ensemble that epitomized her iconic style. From the first note to the last, the multi-talented artist held the audience in rapt attention, showcasing not only her unparalleled vocal prowess but also her mastery of stage presence.

The concert unfolded as a journey through Beyoncé’s illustrious career, with a meticulously curated setlist that blended old classics and contemporary hits. The seamless transitions between soulful ballads and high-energy anthems ensured a dynamic experience, keeping the audience on their feet throughout the night.

“Best experience ever. It was truly a dream come true since I grew up listening to and watching Beyonce, and I got to experience it with my daughter,” said Essence Frazier, 36. “I enjoyed every minute of it. You got to see everyone’s sense of style with no one judging. My favorite song was when she opened with her song ‘Dangerously in Love’”.

Inktober Popular Annual Art Challenge for Artists

By Britney Ta Originating from the U.S., Inktober has now become a global art challenge for artists in all areas of the world. This annual challenge brings the art community together and allows other artists to support one another.

Of course, with so many artists participating, there are bound to be differing opinions. Some may argue that digital artists shouldn’t participate as they aren’t ‘real artists.’

Others may just want to participate in this fun activity.

Not only is the concept of Inktober intriguing, but so is the history behind it. Inktober, a combination of the words ‘ink’ and ‘October’, is a challenge in the art community where artists create an ink piece every day for the month of October.

Jake Parker, an American artist, started this challenge mainly for himself in 2009. The main goal was to focus on improving skills and developing beneficial drawing habits.

After finishing every piece, artists post their work online under the hashtags ‘#inktober’ and ‘#inktober(year)’.

Since then, Inktober has gained massive popularity worldwide.

Participating artists have plenty of reasons for partaking in this activity; such as practice or just for fun.

“I participate in Inktober because I saw other artists doing it and I thought it would be a fun challenge,” Jennifer Hyunh, freshman, said. “I also enjoy inking and it would’ve been good practice for me.”

Indigenous Peoples’ Day The real story behind Columbus Day

By Annberlynne Fuller & Cheyanne Maddox Did you know that Columbus caused mass genocide and death for Native American communities? Or that Indigenous Peoples’ Day falls on the same day as Columbus Day? Both fall on the second Monday of October. This was done as a protest against Columbus and the ideas behind him.

What is Indigenous Peoples’ Day? Before covering Columbus, we need to look at Indigenous Peoples’ Day. It falls on the second Monday of October, overlapping with Columbus Day. The overlap is seen as a victory by Native Americans as well as those who do not support Columbus.

“We shouldn’t be recognizing Columbus, we shouldn’t have a day recognizing him for what he did to a bunch of Indigenous people,” said Lia Hernandez, a senior at Lincoln.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day has been recognized and celebrated by Native American communities since the 1970s, but it was only recently that it was recognized at a national level through a proclamation made by President Joe Biden in 2021. Even though the President himself spoke on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, it is not recognized as a federal holiday in America. Though some states do recognize the holiday, either along with Columbus or replacing Columbus Day all together.

But what is Indigenous Peoples’ Day? In short, the day is a time to recognize

the hardships that Native Americans have been through and to celebrate their culture and ancestors. It’s a day to celebrate their survival and the persistence of their culture despite forced assimilation and mass genocide.

Why and how we celebrate?

Why is it important to celebrate Indigenous People’s Day? Since the arrival of Columbus, Native Americans have faced a painful history. When Columbus arrived in America, Native Americans’ lives began to change forever, they began to face enslavement, theft of their land and resources, kidnappings, assimilation, infection, and overall death.

As the United States grew, so did assimilation and loss of land. Native American tribes continued to be pushed back, later undergoing the Trail of Tears, not to mention the continued broken treaties that were originally made to protect native land. An abundance of Native American tribes still live in poor conditions today, “A lot of the land that the United States government gave to the Native Americans was land that was not all that usable.

So oftentimes, these communities are left impoverished because we kept pushing them further and further west into land they could not grow agriculture and they could not roam or hunt buffalo because we had killed all of them. Though some October 2023

This is why the celebration of Indigenous Peoples’ Day is important, it represents how Native Americans will not be forgotten, no matter what was done to get rid of them; they will continue to survive.

Now that we have covered why we celebrate Indigenous People’s Day, we can look at how we celebrate. Many celebrations consist of protests against a variety of things such as Columbus memorials and loss of land. They also strive for environmental justice, and to honor missing or killed women. Before or after these protests Native Americans celebrate with food, music, art and traditional performances. These forms of celebration are in honor of their culture and the continued fights for their rights and equality.

True story of Columbus The story of Columbus that is taught in many schools in America is not the true story. Many people are still not aware of the fact that Columbus was a terrible person and that he brought enslavement and genocide to the new world. Many people want the true story to be taught more accurately and thoroughly.

Lincoln College Preparatory Academy recently held its highly anticipated Spirit Week, a week long celebration of school pride and unity. From creative costumes to exciting activities, students at LCPA showcased their enthusiasm and school spirit throughout this week.

The festivities kicked off with the traditional ‘Surfer vs Biker day’. It brought out the competitive spirit as students divided themselves into two groups, each representing their chosen lifestyle. Leather jackets and bandannas clashed with Hawaiian shirts and board shorts, creating a friendly rivalry that added excitement to the week.

“Since my friends were dressing up I decided I would too, and it would be something fun,” said Anahi Morales, a freshman at Lincoln.

Next up was ‘Toddlers vs Elders day’, where students transformed themselves into wise and elderly or young and dumb characters.

Gray wigs, canes, reading glasses, onesies, pacifiers, and stuffed animals were the accessories of choice as students embraced their inner crybaby or future adulthood.

One of the highlights of Spirit week was ‘Decades day’ where students embraced the fashion and trends of different eras. From bell-bottoms to wearing jeans backwards, students showcased their knowledge of past

decades with style and flair.

“I just think it’s cool to dress up and I already kind of wear this style so it was kind of easy to do.” said Sofia Hernandez, a sophomore at Lincoln.

To cap off the week, students showcased their creativity on ‘Student/ Teacher swap day.’ This allowed students to step into the shoes of their teachers, while teachers took on the role of students for a day. Students and teachers saw each other in a different light and built stronger relationships that extended beyond the traditional classroom setting.

“Spirit Week is an opportunity for our students to come together, show their creativity, and celebrate what makes our school special,” said Vice Principal Seth Oldham. “The energy and enthusiasm displayed during this week truly embodies the spirit of LCPA.” As Spirit Week came to a close, the halls of LCPA were buzzing with excitement and a renewed sense of school pride. The event served as a reminder of the strong bond between students and their dedication to making LCPA a vibrant and inclusive community.

A Week of Thrills and Triumphs LCPA Homecoming

By Ni’am Muhammed Lincoln College Prep’s homecoming week was an eventful extravaganza, filled with spirited activities that brought the entire school community together. From the highly anticipated football game to the pep rally, students and faculty alike reveled in the festivities.

The highlight of the week was undoubtedly the intense football game between the Lincoln Tigers and their arch-rivals, the Oak Grove Panthers. The stadium was buzzing with excitement as both teams clashed on the field. The Tigers fought valiantly, displaying remarkable teamwork and determination. As the clock ticked down, the crowd erupted in cheers as the Tigers secured a thrilling victory, with star quarterback, Aaron Rimson, leading the charge.

“This win means everything to us. We’ve worked so hard, and it feels amazing to come out on top,” said Rimson, beaming with pride.

The homecoming pep rally was a sight to behold, showcasing the creativity and enthusiasm of LCPA students. Students from various clubs, organizations and sports teams showcased their talents.

“Being part of Homecoming was such an incredible experience. Seeing the community

come together to celebrate our school was truly heartwarming,” shared Emily Martinez, a member of the dance team.

Throughout the week, students participated in a series of spirited events, each day dedicated to a different theme. From Decades day to Student Teacher Swap day the hallways were transformed into a kaleidoscope of costumes and laughter.

“Spirit week is my favorite time of the year. It’s a chance to let loose, show our creativity, and bond with friends,” senior Sarah Johnson said.

Homecoming week was an unforgettable celebration, uniting students, faculty, and the community in a shared sense of pride and camaraderie. The football game, pep rally, and spirit week activities showcased the school’s vibrant spirit and the dedication of its students.

As the week came to a close, the memories created during homecoming week would forever hold a special place in the hearts of the Lincoln Tigers.

Homecoming Football Game

Oak Grove Vs LCPA

By Eli Siemers, Sports Editor & Elijah Sanchez The Blue Tigers were ready to play the Panthers on Homecoming night, coming off of a 57-6 victory over Highland Park, both teams were ready to play in one of their biggest games of the season. Junior AShaun Moore, Lincoln’s inside Linebacker, who previously led the state of Missouri in tackles was out for this game with a concussion.

The game started off about as good as it could have for the Blue Tigers, with junior defensive back and wide receiver Davyne Jones returning the games’ opening kickoff for a touchdown.

As Jones made his way to the sideline, he continued to shout, “They can’t mess with me.”

Senior Ellis Von Fintell made the extra point, the score being 7-0 only 13 seconds into the game. Quickly, the Oak Grove Panthers answered, finishing a drive down the field with a 39-yard run for a touchdown

from junior running back and linebacker Jase Lee with a 2-point conversion.

After an otherwise uneventful first quarter, the score was 8-7 Oak Grove on top.

“When you can’t play a big game, it’s like being a soldier without a war. You have the skills, the passion, and the drive, but no outlet to showcase them”, Moore said from the sideline.

On their next possession, The Tigers moved down the field and turned the ball over on downs. The Panthers drove down slowly and scored on a similar run play with junior fullback/WR Noah Spencer. Lincoln answered quickly, with a RB screen to Jones, with the extra point good, the score now 1514. With a sack from junior Stephon Reed on 4th down, the Tigers got the ball back with great field position.

With the clock running fast, Lincoln had to work fast to get into the end zone. With one second left, senior QB Aaron Rimson ran the ball in for a touchdown on a draw play, the score 20-15 at halftime.

“I knew this soft team couldn’t hang with us,” as an expression of excitement, junior Jose Padilla said.

After Oak Grove received the second half kickoff, they

quickly began what eventually turned into a shootout, junior Noah Spencer scored again.

Failing the 2-point conversion, the score was 21-20.

After nothing out of first and second down, QB Rimson connected with sophomore WR Gavin Nash for a 64 yard touchdown. Offense continued to dominate the 3rd quarter, another rushing score for Oak Grove from senior RB Grady Hudspeth, a passing touchdown for Lincoln to junior WR Bryson Hill, and a Tiger rushing touchdown for Arron Smith. The score by the end of quarter three was 40-28 with the Lincoln Blue Tigers winning.

Quarter four continued this offensive shootout, Smith scoring again for Lincoln.

Defenses for both teams started to step up, causing a turnover on downs in the Blue Tigers’ favor. A fumble recovered by Oak Grove, which immediately coughed back up for Lincoln football. Lincoln ran some clock but ultimately did not score, giving Oak Grove the ball. The Panthers had an explosive play from Spencer, putting their offense in the redzone for a score 47-35.

Once Lincoln had the ball back, they ran the clock more and more. Oak Grove took the ball back but their offense couldn’t put anything up. The Lincoln Blue Tigers beat the Oak Groves Panthers for Homecoming 47-35.

Blue Tiger Football

By Johnson Otto After a strong football season the Lincoln Tigers and the Carl Junction Bulldogs faced off in the football district playoffs on Oct. 27.

The football team went all the way down to Carl Junction, three hours south of Kansas City near Joplin, to play this playoff game. The final score was 32-0 with Carl Junction winning. It was a long bus ride back to Kansas City after the game. The team played their hardest and gave their all the entire football season.

The Tigers’ quarterback, Aaron Rimson VI played really well this season and threw for 743 yds and 9 touchdowns. He also rushed for 373 yds and 4 touchdowns.

The running back for the Lincoln Tigers Aaron Smith ran for 1000 plus yards this season and had 14 rushing touchdowns.

One of the team’s star linebackers, Ashaun Moore played a big part on the defense. Moore had over 100 tackles, 6 sacks and an interception.

Moore once led the state of Missouri in tackles.

All of the players played a big part on the team including the coaches.

Coach Marcus Crosdale coaches the offensive line, Coach Shawn McLennon coaches the defensive line, Coach Leonard Bulock coaches linebackers, and Coach Drew Malone coaches receivers/corners.

The coaching staff helped lead the team to a 8-2 record. This is the team’s third coaching staff in the past three years. The seniors on the team have had three different coaching staff over the years.

The team has gone through a lot of challenges this year which made the team stronger. This off-season, they will work harder to win State next year.

Blue Tiger Soccer

By Haven Johnson A devastating loss for Lincoln Prep, the 0-1 loss in the Class 3 Tournament left a sour taste in the mouths of the players after a long season.

“You know, it’s really tough, but that's just the game, you win some, you lose some,” said Roberto Recinos, a boys varsity soccer defender.

The 5-16 Pembroke Raiders shutout the Tigers, 1-0. Players on the team all agreed that communication was off, and was definitely a game they should have won.

Lady Tiger Volleyball

By Bryson Hill The Lincoln Lady Tigers volleyball team finished with a record of 17-6-1 this season. Finishing their season on a heartbreaking loss in districts.

“I thought we worked really well with each other by keeping each other on our toes and making sure we're doing our jobs right,” said Anderson after the loss.

Lincoln Lady Tigers' goal for next year is to win the district game.

“I won't be here next year but for them to win districts would mean a lot because they’ll be improving from the past year,” said Anderson.

Anderson’s most memorable moment of her last season, “The team bonding trip where we went to the escape room.”

She said that it built friendships and allowed her to connect with other teammates on the team. Overall, they had a great season and she can’t wait to see them go after it again next year.
