Letters to the editor: Dear editor, We all thank family ווייספישand especially מוטיfor putting together our magazine. It’s very interesting. We learn new things about where everyone lives and how everyone does different things. We also enjoyed learning Hebrew. However something seems to be missed out. I got the magazine and I was looking for my page. I couldn’t see it so I asked my mother to check if anything else is still printing; she told me that there isn’t. I was a bit sad so please can you make sure that it goes in this week’s magazine. Please can you also interview ’אבאs שחיטה. We all want to know how Covid-19 has affected שחיטה. PARSHA ACTIVITY YOM TOV ACTIVITY In this week’s parsha it talks about the Yomim Tovim so I decided to make things to do with Yom Tov: A. Flower biscuits for Shevuos B. Marzipan Lulav and Esrog for Succos C. Silver-foil covered lechaim cups for 4 kosos
YOU WILL NEED SHEVUOS BISCUITS RECIPE
1 ¼ sticks of margarine 1 egg yolk 2 Tbsp of cold water ¾ cup of icing sugar
Fondant Icing Sugar Yellow food Colouring White Fondant Green Fondant Pink Fondant
2 cups of flour
Green food Colouring Marzipan
Method:
Red jelly/jello
Mix all ingredients except the flour in a mixer. When the ingredients are well mixed, add the flour. If the dough is too sticky add a bit more flour. Roll the dough NOT too thin and not too thick. Shape the biscuits into circles, and bake on 300°. When the biscuits are ready, leave to cool. Roll

INTERVIEW Y U
We would like to thank רב אברהם ויספישan international shochet for giving us a few minutes in his busy schedule, even though he has been working quite as much as usual now. We appreciate it very much. רב אברהם ויספישhas been to many a country and has shared some of his most interesting experiences with us.
LY: Hello רב אברהם ויספישhow long have you been a shochet for? AW: 21 years. LY: Who taught you how to shecht? AW: R’ Dovid Acoca taught me to shecht עופותand Reb Yisroel Faigel kindly taught me how to shecht גסות. LY: Which countries have you been to shecht ? AW: I have been to Ireland, Italy, Holland, Bulgaria, UK and France. I have shechted for Switzerland in St Louis as well as in Prague which is in the Czech Republic and Spain.
LY: What was the most interesting place you have been to? AW: South Africa was the most interesting place I have been in terms of shechita, the kehillah and the country. LY: What was your craziest story? AW: Once I was asked to go to Bulagaria to do a shechita on a Thursday. I was given two options of airports to fly to, one in Rumania and one in Bulgaria. The סוחרtold me both were about and hour and a half away from the place we were to shecht. My cleaning lady, Dani, just shook her head. She said that didn’t make sense. That should have been my first warning that things were not going to turn out that simple.
I chose to fly to Romania and after working all day Wednesday in the UK, I headed to the airport. The flight was uneventful and I arrived at about 11 o’clock at night in Romania. A yiddishe driver met me there with a Russian accent. Asking if he knows the way he said “keen, keen, ani yoodaiah” but soon I found out that he “lo yoodaiah”! We got in the car and sped off to the border of Bulgaria with the help of a GPS. Surprise, Surprise, as soon as we crossed the border the GPS no longer worked! But “keen, keen, ani yoodaiah” tried to convince me he knows the way. Being exhausted I fell asleep for the ‘short drive’. About an hour into the drive, I was awakened by our dear driver making a u-turn on the motorway! Falling asleep again, I woke up about an hour later again by the driver doing another u-turn! This was happening every half to one hour until eventually at four o’clock in the morning, we arrived at the village, too late to go to the hotel as shechita was meant to begin at 4.30 a.m! Lots of goyim were standing in the streets waiting for transport to work (at 4.00 in the morning) and recognised who we were coming for. With sign language, they
directed us to the factory/abbatoir. Too scared to have my purse stolen, I left it in the driver’s glove compartment. Off to shecht I went, taking my passport with me. At about 12 o’clock lunch time we finished and it was time to head to the airport, this time Sofia, Bulgaria. That’s when I made a discovery. The driver had taken the Rov back to Romania with my purse and my shechting license inside his car, which I needed for Monday in Ireland! I had only my passport and not a penny. The סוחר lent me 100 Euro which he said was plenty for a taxi to the airport and to get me home. He ordered a taxi for me – which cost me 80 Euro! Arriving in Birmingham at almost 11 o’clock at night I discovered that the last train was leaving very soon. I had seen that it costs £10 to take a train to Manchester – I could just about make it. The money exchange at the airport was just about to close when I came along with my 20 Euro. They said it costs £9 just for changing. With no choice, I took whatever I got and ran to the train without a ticket. Too exhausted to move, I sat down. Please note that I
had worked all Wednesday, travelled all Wednesday evening and worked from 4:30 a.m. on Thursday! Along came the conductor half way through the journey. Explaining my predicament, I offered him all I had. Unfortunately, buying a ticket in advance costs £10 but on the day or on the train cost £30! He was very kind and said that from the place we were at till Manchester costs £10 so he would accept it. Boruch Hashem. I took a taxi from Piccadilly Station and paid when I got home! Phew. Now I needed to get my purse back urgently so that I could fly Monday with my European license. The “ani yoodaiah” driver had remembered (BH) that my purse was in the glove compartment and gave it to the Rov who was travelling home to Amsterdam. We tried to get it by courier but UPS and other couriers wanted about £170! Meanwhile, the Rov went to Shul and met someone who mentioned that they were off to Manchester. My purse arrived before Shabbos!
LY: Who gave you ? קבלה Aw: First Dayan Lichtenstein from the kollel including Dayan Gelley and Dayan Toledano. Then I got a קבלהfrom the Rosh Kollel הרב מדרכי וייסwho was recently niftar from coronavirus; also Rav Mordche Gross, Rabbi Zimmerman, Dayan Ehrentreu and the Rabanut (which resulted in me being able to shecht Ireland because they need someone who has a British slaughter license and a קבלהfrom Rabanut). LY: Which country do you still want to visit? Aw: Australia. LY: Why? Aw: Because when they do lamb, they have a special pen so that they can do 12 lambs at a time instead of one. It is also one of the continents I haven’t been to. The only other continent I have not been to is south America although I have been asked to go there. However, I wouldn’t want to go there for 3 months at a time like Israeli shochtim. LY: Who pays for your travel expenses? Aw: The kashrus that is hiring me at
the time must pay my travel expenses including Hotels and taxis and should provide me with food (though this doesn’t always happen). LY: Which kinds of slaughtering licence do you need? I need a licence from the government via the chief rabbi which is reviewed each year and is specifically for the communities I am shechting for and I need a licence from the FSA (food standard agency) I have to have a course in food hygiene. LY: Do any of your children want to become shochtim? Yes, my son Eli weisfish wants to become a shochet and he has already started to learn how to do בדיקותand is learning the הלכות. He likes to sign his name אלאזר מנחם מן ויספיש שו''ב (שוחט ) ובודק.Shmully has been learning how to check chalofim and has performed this publicly, at school. LY: What was the most interesting animal you have shechted? I went to Prague twice to shecht deer. LY: Where in Prague?
We did it on a deer farm outside in the open. It was a family business, with all the members of the family helping out. LY: Who wanted deer? A woman doctor in London organised it. LY: Why? Because it is very healthy meat and tastes delicious. They charged about £60 for a portion of meat in the restaurant in Golders Green. LY: Did you get any? Yes I got some cheeks but there was a misunderstanding and they ended up in the cholent and it tasted of ……………… cholent! Surprise, Surprise! LY: What was your scariest experience? I was once shechting bulls and the man who was meant to press the raise button pressed the release button and the bull chased me and cornered me but b”h there was a big window with a bin on the other side and I jumped in it and was BH safe.

We have a non Jewish neighbour whose business is to sell vans. During the corona virus people are not buying extra things so he does not have business and can’t buy his children food. He found a bike shop and he bought loads of bikes and he is selling them now. The makes that he bought are correro, giant, scott, cube and raleigh. He has sold a lot of bikes now. Nearly every day he comes back with loads of bikes. We enjoy watching people coming to test bikes. Sometimes people come and say the brakes don’t work, the next person comes and says the gears don’t work, and that is how it goes every day.
