Dear Readers, We have a special mazal tov this week that goes to Family Ehrentreu on their new baby boy, future company for Yehudah Boruch Be’ezras Hashem.

Thanks once again to everyone who has made this week’s Le’covid You a possibility.This week is our issue on remembering the “good, old days”. Uncle Aron, it was great to get your contribution this week. It really takes us down memory lane. Aunty Tirza made us laugh with all her memories. I sure remember Oma’s collection of patches.

It was an important chore for Oma with two boisterous boys. I seem to remember her patching trousers every night though I’m sure it was only probably every second one.

From one Corona to the next, Shmulli and Mordechai Lewis give us a glimpse once again of the new reality we are living in. You children will iy”h have some very interesting memories to tell your children one day be”h. About the time you didn’t go to school for ???? months, when you were on lockdown and you didn’t commit any crime, when you couldn’t buy toilet paper or in fact anything in the shops, when it took hours to queue at the supermarket and when you finally got in you could only buy three of any item….

So kids, next week it’s your turn! Imagine you are telling your children about the Cornavirus. Let’s hear from you!

Well, there’s lots to write about so let’s keep those juices flowing.

Family Smus Dear Editor,

Dear Editor, Regarding the good old days, I wasn't one of the 'adults' then (still not sure if I qualify now...) but I remember coming to Uncle Dani's birthday party in Manor Road on Chanuka, and lying down with an earache on a huge ladybird teddybear. I wonder how huge it really was!

I also have this funny memory of Aunty Chavi's lechaim, when Leah Berkowitz came in wearing the same thing as Aunty Chavi! She ran out and reappeared a few minutes later amidst some adult cackling!

Also of course a huge m''t to Aunty Chani Ehrentreu on the birth of her new kohen!!!

Waaay back when in the last century when Tirza, Aron, Dani and Chavi were not aunts or uncles we enjoyed doing …. Photography!

Photography was the art of using a camera, film and flashes.

Of the three items mentioned, two of them you might be familiar with, that is cameras and flashes. You are probably not familiar with the concept of film.

Additionally, cameras were …. Well, cameras .. real cameras, not those phony phone things you use, and flashes … yes, those were REALLY flashes!

There were two types of cameras that we used, those that took film, and those that took cassettes. A film looked like this; It was a funny tube with a piece sticking out.

You threaded the film onto a spool in the camera and then you closed the camera back. You see, if light hit the film it was ruined. Now how many times could you click the button? A hundred times? Constantly?

Well, … no .. this film allowed you to click the button 36 times. That’s it! No more! Buy yourself another film if you want to do more. Once you completed the film you sent it to a company that printed it for you. Each picture costs money. You don’t know what it looks like until you print it because it printed on this funny stuff and all you got was a “negative” a backward picture.

This company called Kodak came up with another type of film, It came in a cassette. Either a slim cassette (called 110) or a wide cassette (called 126) . This was really practical because you didn’t have to fiddle around with film and spools and sprockets, you just popped it in and clicked away … for 20 or 24 times! You still had to mail it away to get to see the pictures…. Life back then was really tough and primitive (but we had running water and toilets).

So let’s say you wanted to take a picture at night time. You need a flash.

So you either bought a cube flash or a flip flash. Either way you got either 4 flashes or 8 flashes. They really flashed! (no noise, no explosions, but they were warm to the touch.)

I won’t begin to explain to you how you used them it would be waaayy too complicated.

So anyhow, we all survived with these ancient devices, we took nice pictures and we could actually look at them on Shabbos because we had them printed.

The Corona man came each Thursday evening to sell fizzy drinks. Our favourite flavour? Fizzy Grapefruit!

The rag and bone man! He wanted all your shmattes. Nowadays in Manchester, we have a more modern version. The metal man with his van calling out on a mic "We steal any metal!"

Every cot had this toy! by Fisher Price My friend had this car. Where did children sit in those days? In the boot of course!

Seatbelts? Na, just for the driver.

The parafin man. Some people still had parafin heaters when I was little. I loved watching through the window in Manor Rd when the parafin man would come on shabbos and pour parafin using a blue funnel. Boruch Hashem we had modern heating hen and didn't need any.

To have a flash on your camera, you had to buy a disposable flash.

Each time you used it, it turned 90 degrees. Four times and you needed a new one! Films in the camera - how many photos came out well?

Any more fares? The conductor gave you a paper ticket. Want to get off? Jump off at the traffic lights. Don't need to wait to get to the bus stop.

First milk bottles that got returned to the milkman. Then the carton - how much? a pint of milk please!

The manual typewriter. MIne looked very much like this!

The first printers and the green and white papers.!It sounded like a whole coop of chickens!

One of the first type of PC's. No pictures!

No colours! And a disc for memory storage.

One pound notes!

The wireless! Tante Betty, Bubba Nussbaum. They still owned them!

Birthday parties, bas mitzvahs? Not without the silent films of Charlie Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy or Tom and Jerry!

The car for the disabled. I was always scared they would tip over and the people inside would become more disabled! The car had only 3 wheels!

A manual machine we used to "photo-copy " papers in school.

The teacher would write out her work on carbon paper, stick it in the machine and crank the handle 30 times! Aunty Tirza remembers making her whole sem Year Book like that!

A mobile phone? Sounds like science-fiction to me? How do you plug it in?

Needles for music? What's that machine? A record player! Quickly catch the arm before the music ends or the needle will go to the middle and make a lot of noise. Possibly scratch the needle too!

WE ARE LEFT WITH……..

FOR EXAMPLE, WE DIDN’T HAVE COMPUTERS, WE JUST HAD TYPEWRITERS THAT TYPED IN 1 FONTSIMILARLY LOOKING TO THIS ONE. NO CHOICE- UNLESS YOU WERE A PRINTER, THEN YOU HAD A FEW MORE TO CHOOSE FROM, BUT NOT MANY. BY THE WAY, IN THE ‘OLDEN DAYS’IF YOU WERE A PRINTER IT WAS A PROFESSION- A JOB, NOT A THING- AS IN SOMEONE WHO PRINTED OUT NEWSPAPERS. AND, IF YOU HAD A COMPUTER WHEN I WAS SMALL, IT WAS THE SIZE OF A WHOLE ROOM- AND IT DID LESS THAN A SMALL SIMPLE HAND HELD DEVICE CAN DO NOW!!!!!!!!!!!

BESIDES, THAT, IF YOU MADE A MISTAKE WHEN YOU WERE TYPEWRITING, YOU EITHER STARTED AGAIN. OR YOU USED TIPPEX. NO SPELL CHECK OR DELETE BUTTONS, NO SCREEN. IF YOU WANTED TO CHECK WHERE YOU WERE UP TO YOU HAD TO ROLL THE PAPER UP AND ACTUALLY LOOK WHERE YOU WERE UP TO. AS FOR MONEY, IT MEANT A LOT MORE THAN TODAY. WHAT CAN YOU BUY FOR 10P. A TOFFEE OR 2, A SIMPLE LOLLY? I WENT SWIMMING FOR 10P. THE BUS WAS 2P FOR ANYONE UNDER 16, SO THAT WAS 4P, I PAID 5P TO GET INTO THE SWIMMING POOL, AND WITH THE 1P LEFT, I COULD BUY 2 HARD BOILED SWEETS. TRY THAT TODAY!!!!!!!!!!

NOT EVERYTHING WAS SO EASY IN THOSE DAYS. THERE WERE NO CLOTHES BOUGHT IN SUPERMARKETS-- THAT DIDN’T EXIST. SO IF WE COULDN’T AFFORD EXPENSIVE CLOTHES SHOP, YOU OFTEN RESORTED TO GETTING SECOND HAND CLOTHES FROM OTHER PEOPLE. THAT WASN’T SO BAD THOUGH, BEACAUSE YOU OFTEN GOT REALLY FANCY STUFF FROM RICH PEOPLE WHO HAD OUTGROWN THEIR CLOTHES. THIS ONE IS FOR THE BOYS—WHEN MY BROTHERS GOT HOLES IN THEIR TROUSERS, OMA PATCHED THEM UP- YES SHE PUT PATCHES ON THEM. NONE OF YOU PROBABLY KNOW EVEN WHAT THAT IS! WHAT ABOUT FILMS IN CAMERAS? FLASHES THAT YOU HAD TO ATTACH TO YOUR CAMERA TO TAKE AN INDOOR PICTURE? SHABBOS SHOES WERE ONLY FROM BAS MITZVA OR BAR MITZVAH, AS THERE WAS NO SUCH THING AS CHEAP CHINESE STUFF. ONE THING I CAN SAY THOUGH IS THAT ALL OF US, UNCLE ARON, UNCLE DANI AUNTY CHAVI AND I HAD A LOVELY CHILDHOOD. OMA USED TO TAKE US OUT VERU OFTEN ON A SUNDY TO A PARK, AND IN THE WINTER TO DIFFERENT MUSEUMS. SOMETIMES WE WOULD JUST DO A BUS CRAWL. GOING ON AND OFF BUSES AT RANDOM AND SEEING WHERE WE GOT TO. IT WAS TONS OF FUN.

When I started to learn how to write we used an inkwell and a special type of pen. ink blots went all over the clothes and paper if you weren't lucky. When that happened you got scolded severely!

We were on holiday for a while in Lugano. Whilst there, my sister and Rutli had a really cruel piano teacher. One erev shabbos, she locked us in our house because we hadn't done our practice well (we did it on our table because we didn't have a piano there). We thought we were going to be there all shabbos but my father came to rescue us!

My piano teacher in Celerina got so exasperated with me because I wasn't very good at playing. He said "You have a board in front of your eyes.

You don’t understand anything! it didn't help that my sister was good at it!

At home we had to eat everything we were served but were allowed to choose one food that we disliked and never had to eat. Every Erev Shabbos we got a kind of rogelle with raisins which I detested. I was too frightened to say I didn't like it so I use to sneak off to the toilet to flush it down. My sister Lilly caught me once doing it and said don't do that again. Give it to me next time!

Sometimes we slept upstairs in a goyshe house near the Kinderheim in Celerina because there was no room at home. There was no heating there, only a wood furnace that went out at night. It was freezing in winter. In the morning we had to break the ice to wash negel vasser.

Preparation time: 5 minutes Oven time: 20-30 minutes Total time: 25-35 minutes

Ingredients: 3 eggs 2/3 cup of oil 1 ½ cups sugar 1 cup flour 2/3 cup of cocoa 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon vanilla essence ½ cup chocolate chips Method: I. Mix all the ingredients in a bowl by hand.

Oven: bake at 180oC for 20-30 minutes

MIX WATER SUGAR, YEAST AND WATER AND WAIT FOR IT TO BUBBLE II. PUT IN THE FLOUR, SALT AND OIL MIX. III. PUT ON THE PASSATA, AND THEN THE CHEESE IV. SPRINKLE THE OREGANO AND BLACK PEPPER OVEN: BAKE AT 180 C FOR 15 MINUTES.

IT’S NOT WHAT YOU GIVE BUT HOW YOU GIVE IT

I don’t like to consider myself a ‘meshulach’ even though really it is a very choshuve thing to do. I learn in Kolel and Boruch Hashem have had Hatzlacha when collecting Tzedaka for Kolel so I feel I am Mechuyav to do that when necessary. When other people have asked me though, I haven’t agreed to ‘go collecting’ for them. There was one exception though. As a one off, I did a few phone calls and collected some funds for a Moisad here in Manchester catering for children with learning difficulties.

There is an older English Yid whom I’ve come to know living here locally. I respect him very much; he’s a quiet, humble man who does many good things. Whenever I call him he tells me to come the following day to fetch an envelope which will be waiting in the porch from 7am – where he leaves it when he goes to Shacharis!

To continue with this particular story, I went to visit him at his house. While talking I mentioned that I have a lot of respect for him; I watch him davening and he pronounces each word slowly and carefully. He never rushes; when watching him you can clearly see that he’s having a conversation with Hashem. He smiled a warm, sad smile and told me something which has always stayed with me. “I struggled to read since I was a young boy,” he said, “and till today reading is difficult for me; I can’t daven any faster.”

My respect for him only grew!

I learnt so many things from him that day: to appreciate organisations – like me’oros – who help children in his situation; to appreciate that I can read well; to realise that davening is not about rattling off the same words by heart each day but to actually read and understand the words afresh each day. I also learnt what it means to be humble. He didn’t put himself down at all. He just felt that what he does is what he was supposed to be doing with no need for praise or attention.

As an aside, when he heard that I was collecting for an organisation which ensures children are helped with additional learning needs when they are young, he was profoundly moved and explained that because of his personal experience this was a cause close to his heart. He then wrote out a generous cheque.

To be honest the numbers on the cheque are not what I remember but rather his warm, caring and helpful demeanor that I picture so vividly each time I recall that scenario.

Recap: R’ Mordche the Parnes had a niece named Miriam whose mother was niftar we left off when she just found her father deathly ill.

Miriam ran to the doctor who lived at the edge of town and who took fantastic care of all the town’s patients and ill people. Although he was not really a doctor, he was the best the towns’ people had so they always called on him when someone was ill. As Miriam ran to the doctor, she was doubting whether she would get there in time or not and if her father would survive. Would she become a double orphan? what would the doctor say and how would it all end.

Finally, Miriam came to the doctor’s house and knocked frantically.

There was no reply. She knocked again no answer. She knocked very loud and finally the doctor’s wife came. Miriam explained what had happened to her father. Quickly the doctor’s wife woke her husband up. As the doctor hurried with Miriam to her house, he asked her what had happened. She proceed to explain how she had found her father unconscious in bed when she had woken up that morning. So, the doctor went in to R’ Itche who was still pale and unconscious. As the doctor checked him, Miriam asked the doctor repeatedlly “Will he survive? Will he survive?” and then the doctor whispered “I think he will not survive.”

And then just as the doctor predicted, a few days later R’ itche unfortunately was niftar. After the Shiva R’ Mordche and his wife took Miriam in and took care of her as their own child. Eventually it came time for Miriam to get married so R’ Mordche looked for the best bochur he could find.

EPSTEIN CHRONICLES

MORDECHAI BACK AT CHEDER

Yay! I couldn’t wait for the first day of Cheder. It was so exciting. After just about 3 months I would see my Rebbe and friends again and be able to learn from my Rebbe in a classroom instead of just listening to his voice over the phone.

On Monday, I arrived in Cheder just when we were supposed to start, at 10.00am, together with another boy. We waited until the Menahel let us inside. Before I opened the big door to Cheder I had to sanitise my hands. I went inside without gloves or a mask because that’s what I was told to do.

I was shocked at the amount of signs that were up and the sellotape with 2m distancing on the floor. I walked up to my classroom – but no one was thee! So I went to a different, bigger classroom and I found the boys sitting there with the Rebbe. The Rebbe, wearing a Perspex mask, told me where my place would be and I sat down and waited for everyone else to come. We all had individual desks taken from a different class, spaced apart.

I have 2 boys in my class who have asthma and they came. I was quite surprised. We sat on our places the whole time with no outdoor breaks; only inside and we had to stay on our seats. Actually both boys with asthma don’t care about social distancing. One boy didn’t come. He joined via Zoom.

On Wednesday the Menahel came into our class and spoke to us for 45 minutes about respecting other people, listening to our Rabbonim and keeping to social distancing. He then offered us the opportunity to play outdoors on condition that we keep to social distancing. We all said that we would. And we did. We played cricket; everyone had to bat from their position and it worked really well. We had such a fun time! The Menahel watched us and was very happy with how it worked.

It was different but fun and enjoyable!

STORY TIME WITH SHMULLY WHAT TO DO Once there lived a man named Michal when he was 19 years old, he came to his mother and told her that he felt it was time for him to get a job Michal had studied in a famous university and wanted a high end office job so Michal’s mother started helping him look for a job. Then once when Michal was driving, he saw a sign staying “in need of staff Must have good commuter training.

Michal saved the number on his phone and when he came home that night, he -phoned the number he had seen that day and when they answered they asked him a few questions and told him to come the following day and they would interview him. So, the following day he came to the office of this company it was a marketing company and when Michal came in the receptionist asked him what he was there for and when he replied that he was here for the interview. He was taken into a big conference room where he met a few of the company’s executives who interviewed him for a while and then they said he was hired they told him to go to a certain office building on floor 8 and go to office 51 and begin work his boss was in office 40 on the same floor.

So, the next day.

Michal came to work but didn’t know what to do so he did some of his own things he wished to accomplish like writing a short biography about himself and he played some games but one day the head o the company spoke to Michal and said you have not been doing much if you don’t do more for the company you are fired.

So, the next day Michal bought 10 cups of coffee and some doughnuts he came in to his bosses office and gave him the coffee and doughnuts. The boss then asked him what it was for so Michal replied “it is for you and the company because you are paying me to serve the company” the boss chuckled and answered “we didn’t hire you to buy us coffee and doughnuts we want you to bring our company to the next level” “but I don’t know what to do” whispered Michal in embarrassment. “so, take this file and know it well” responded Michal’s boss. “what does it say in it” inquired Michal. “it says about the great people of this company and their success and failures and mainly it says what we expect of our workers.

Q: what can we learn from the story.

A: we come into this world to do mitzvot but sometimes we forget what we need to do so hashem gave us the torah to help us to know what to do so let’s learn lots of torah and familiarize ourselves in it so we know what to do.

The Longest Aliah Ever Erev shabbos vayakel-pekudei: The Rov of our shul said there will not be minyonim that shabbos in our shul. It was upsetting. Some people from our shul went to outdoor private minyonim (but we didn’t because we were isolating; we were still planning to go to London for Pesach). We davened at home and enjoyed everyone being together.

Shabbos parshas tzav: It was the shabbos of my bar mitzvah and we davened at home without a minyan. I ‘leined’ for my family from a Tikun Kor’im. After davening we had a big Kiddush and walked over to my leining Rebbe to say Mazel Tov through his dining room window. 5 neighbours knocked on our dining room window to join in the Simcha and we drank L’chaim through the window!

Pesach passed...sefiras Ha’Omer...

Erev Shavuos: The Rov would still not allow minyanim. That was really difficult; another Yom Tov with no Minyan. But we did hear that he would allow a minyan from 1st June – 2 days after Shavuos. This was my best Yom Tov present!

Monday Parshas Nosoi: Mazel Tov! Today was the first time I davened in a minyun – still outdoors- since my bar mitzvah! I also got my first aliya! But it didn’t come for free. I had to learn the leining of Parshas Nosoi so that there wouldn’t be too many people around the Sefer Torah and I could both lein and have the Aliyah. We had a Kiddush when I came home. I waited over 2 months from the day I was bar Mitzva to have the zechus of davening in a minyan and having an aliyah; something most Bar Mitzva boys take for granted.

Tes Sivan will always be a very special day for me.

Tuesday Parshas Nosoi: The Rov said that we will be ‫ משלים‬all the leining that we missed since we started davening at home and everyone should bring their own ‫ קידוש‬because it would be a long davening; we would be leining from 3 seforim, starting with Vayakhel- Pekudei in Shemos, through the whole Sefer Vayikra and then Bamidbar and Nossoi of Sefer Bamidbar. I was asked to lein my parsha and I was happy to do that as I had worked hard practising the whole parsha.

(It was supposed to rain the next day so most people bought themselves gazebos. Our outdoor Minyan now had fancy gazebos to protect us from the heat and rain!)

Wednesday Parshas Nosoi: We were very excited that I was going to lein so we decided that we will make a pre-packed kiddush for everyone.

Everyone was excited. We put inside three different types of cake, individually wrapped, herring with eyer-kiechlech, a drink and a l’chaim.

We wrapped them wearing gloves on a scrubbed down surface.

Erev Shabbos Parshas Nosoi: We drove around doing deliveries to our closest relatives and friends; a coffee cake and L’chaim so that they could join in our Simcha.

Shabbos Parshas Nosoi: We davened Shacharis in our outdoor Minyan and then made kiddush. Everyone enjoyed their individually wrapped kiddush package. There was one person who ate his package as melavemalke because he didn’t want to make kiddush before ‫התורה קריאת‬.

And now it came to ‫קריאת התורה‬. They called up the‫ כהן‬and he stood under the gazebo by the Sefer Torah, from the beginning of parshus vayakel-pekudei till the end of ‫ כהן‬of Parshus nosoi. I took over the leining for Parshas Tzav. My mother and the boys came to hear from outside the gate. Then I gave the leining back over to the Ba’al korei. After over 13 parshios the Kohen’s Aliyah was over!

Then...I got my ‫ עליה‬with a whole big ‫ !יעמוד‬At the end of my ‫עליה‬ everyone threw sweets. Davening started at 8:00 and finished at 1:00 that was a five-hour davening! Do think you can sit through all that? It reminded me of what Oma Just wrote about her father davening in the old Adas Yisroel Shul in London (where my grandfather is Rov now).
