Firstly, an apology for last week’s lack of L’covid You. Thursday evening and a ta’anis coincided resulting in a very tired mummy/aunty with no intentions of staying up so here goes for Issue 12. As we are slowly getting back into school in the UK (just in time to be off for the Summer Holidays).

Boruch Habah to Motty Weisfish who arrived on our shores this Thursday. We missed you!

Letters to the editor: Dear Editor, Yitzy Weisfish came home from school with an interesting Sha’loh this week.

He bought home a mishloach monos that the teacher put in his drawer after Purim. However, Yitzy was not in school and therefore did not take it home. Was it chometz that was sold or chometz sheovar al Pesach? Yitzi phoned Dayan Golblatt himself who said it is a complicated Sha’loh. In the end he said it is allowed but only a Koton should eat it. Uncle Avraimy discussed this sha’loh in a few places (like in shul after davening on Shabbos) and it became a very interesting topic with lots of complications involved! Well done Yitzy for asking the Sha’loh and also for not eating it till he got the answer!

Dear Editor, Here is a little Corona story.... After pesach, meir started learning in a new evening kollel with a new chavrusa over the phone and he didnt know what he looked like! This past shabbos, they met at an outdoor kiddush for the first time! They have been learning for nearly three months together! Thank you for a wonderful magazine.

THE UNEXPECTED MARRIAGE

Recap: Miriam doubles her hachnasas orchim and leases the shul hall as a beis hatavshil. She built a small cubicle for herself there.

Then one day she too fell ill.

What R’ Mordche wouldn’t do for MiriamHe called doctors from all over the country but none of them could cure her until one day when a big Tzadik came to town. Miriam called R’ Mordche and asked if she could visit the Tzadik. “Of course” was R’ Mordche’s reply as he went straight away to the Tzadik. When R’ Mordche came to the Tzadik and asked for a brocho the Tzadik said he would come to Miriam. When he saw Miriam, he asked R’ Mordche to please step aside so he could speak to the Miriam alone and with privacy.

“Miriam, listen carefully to what I will say. Anything I relate to you now must remain in complete secrecy; do you understand?” “yes, yes I agree with your condition” replied Miriam. “one more thing you must agree with what I say, no matter what I say, do you agree or not” questioned the Tzadik.

“Of course,” was Miriam's answer. “you will get better if you marry the person, I tell you, but wait a minute before saying yes it will be the ugliest person you have ever ever seen, do you agree.” Revealed the Tzadik “will he be ugly on the outside or on the inside” enquired Miriam. “only on the outside” responded the Tzadik. “in that case I will marry him just as the Tzadik says, but how will I know who it is,” inquired Miriam. “see that mirror over there when you see a very ugly person just look into that face mirror if you see an image of me you know it is the right person and you must marry him, do you understand.” Asked the tzaddik. “yes, I understand” replied Miriam.

And after hearing those words the Tzadik called Reb Mordche back and left the room.

Soon thereafter Miriam got better and always remembered her promise to the Tzadik.

OPTICAL ILLUSIONS SEEING BUT NOT ALWAYS BELIEVING!

WHY OPTICAL ILLUSIONS???

“It’s a vase!,” “No, it’s a silhouette of a man, can’t you see?”

“There’s a cube here; sticking out..”

“Here? Rubbish; it’s here, pointing inwards!!!”

Optical illusions are such fun - and sometimes frustrating also.

We see one thing – and then it changes – and then we can’t get back the original image. Sometimes we see one thing and another person sees something completely different. Much as I show them in different ways they just can’t seem to see what I’m pointing out so clearly…

The Chofetz Chaim teaches us that everything Hashem Created in this World is a Moshol for us. The famous example is the Mishna in Pirkei Ovois. All those boys who have been learning in your free time and recording what you’ve learnt with Mamidei Hasiyum will hear in your head that nasal voice speedily announcing, “Ayin Roi’eh veOizen Shoima’as vechol ma’asecha besefer nichtavin” “There is an Eye that Sees and an Ear that Hears and all your deeds are Written in a book.” Hakodosh Boruch Hu Sees and Hears everything we do and say.

When this became difficult for people to understand, Hashem enabled people to develop the camera; now we’d be able to understand what it means that an Eye Sees everything and pictures can be recorded.

Then came the video; we can clearly understand that everything we do will be played back to us after 120.

So what can we learn from optical illusions? What’s the moshol and what’s the nimshal?

I can think of a few things. Maybe you can think of a few more…

The idea that jumps out at me first is the fact that 2 people can look at the same picture, see different things – and both be right!

Wow! That idea is a novelty to many. I can be right and someone else can say something different – and also be right.

This brings to mind the joke of the couple who came to the Rrov with a MAJOR disagreement. The Rov heard out the husaband and said, “you’re right.” He then listened to the wife, nodded his head sagely said said, “you’re right.” The Rebbetzin - who was listening from behind the door- barged in and asked, “but how can they both be right?!” to which the rov smiled and answered slowly, “you’re also right!”

Another idea is that when looking at an optical illusion we can get stuck with what we see and find it difficult to change our viewpoint. When we finally do see the ‘second side’ we can find it difficult to re-focus and see the original picture we saw.

It takes time and lots of practice to attain fluidity and flexibility and if you want to get there it’s something you have to really want to do!

Still another thing we can learn is that things are not always as they seem; the person who looks smaller is not actually so; the dots that are so clearly visible are not truly printed. Hakodosh Boruch Hu Created this world full of illusions; those people we think of negatively may in fact be great; when we get to Olam Habba we’ll see an ‘alma hafucha’ – an upside down world. What we see here, what’s important here, is an illusion. The true picture we’ll see when we get to the Olom Ha’emes.

And along the same lines, let’s be don lekaf zechus – things are not always as they seem; can you think what the other picture might be in any given scenario and judge the person favourably?

So, enjoy the optical illusions! Have fun and take the fun with you into your daily life…

The Ames Room

By Aunty Cha A good few years ago, Uncle Avraimy and I went to the Lake District with Shmully (in the buggy) for a couple of days. As it was quite rainy on one of the days, we decided to visit an Optical Illusions Museum. We went into an Ames Room and took some funny pictures (which I am too tired to look for now!) An Ames Room is a distorted room where the all the objects in the room are created in such a way that it creates an amazing optical illusion.

We built one at the Weisfish house and the children were truly fascinated at the outcome. We urge you to have a go and build one from the template enclosed. Find two lego or playmobil type menchies and place them at either side of the back wall. Look through the peep-hole. Which one is taller? Now exchange places. Who is taller now? What is hapenning?
