Dear Readers, This week has seen more kids back in school, still part time for most. Most mummies are back at work, part time (mostly, though Israelis and Americans think, are on holiday already. In the UK, the kids are all going to school at different times and bringing and collecting is becoming a nightmare! The government has announced today that all children will go back full time to school in September. We have all learned with Coronavirus though, that making plans so far ahead is a bit of a waste of time!

In Eretz Yisroel the number of cases for Coronavirus are mounting, creating more restrictions once again on Chasunahs and other things. We wish everyone there good health and a Refuah Shelaima to those who need it.

Yesterday, I told my kids that I don’t think we have much for the magazine this week and we might have to leave it for next week, but then lots of stuff rolled in and Uncle Da even quickly rolled out an account of the Epstein’s crystal growing- Thanks Uncle Da. This week we began a science week with the topic being energy, force and motion. Next week will be Optical Illusions. Please send your stuff in!

CHAPTER 4 The unexpected marriage

Recap: Miriam married Yitzchok and they started doing a lot of hachnosas orchim and then Yitzchok was niftar.

It was just after the Shiva when Miriam heard a knock at the door it was Reb Mordche (the town parnas and Miriam’s uncle). “Come in” said Miriam.

“Hello Miriam. I want to ask you what you will do with your hachnasas orchim. I just want to tell you that you should stop because it will get too hard for you, so please my niece, stop the hachnasas orchim” stated R’ Mordche.

“Absolutely not; in fact, I will double it le’ ilui nishmas Yitzchok” countered Miriam. After hearing that, R’ Mordche left Miriam's big house.

The next day R’ Mordche was at the shul and a messenger came in “Can Miriam lease the Shul Hall?” asked the messenger. “What does she need it for?” responded R’ Mordche. “I don’t know but she wants it” answered the messenger. “That should be fine, she can have it” said R’ Mordche and the deal was finalised.

Miriam used the hall to do a massive Beis Hatavshil and it became very well known that anyone who needed a place to eat was invited to Miriam's hachnasas orchim and then Miriam built herself a small cubicle overlooking the entire hall where she would eat her meals and make sure people were treated well.

Then tragedy struck one more time for Miriam. She too became seriously ill.

Hello everyone, I’m going to tell you a little but about myself.

My name is Rachel and I am 8 years old. I live in Manchester, where I moved to from Eretz Yisroel two years ago. I miss my grandparents and cousins there and would love to go back there when Corona is over in Eretz Yisroel.

I was very scared when Corona started. My mother told me that it’s very dangerous and my brothers and I all wore gloves and a mask when we left the house. All my neighbours were playing together but my mother didn’t let me join them. Anyway I was too scared!

I was getting very bored at home even though we did lots of activities. I also had to do my school work which I only enjoyed a bit. (Do you understand what I mean?)

Then my grandparents in London asked us to come to visit them. We went for 10 days. I had a good time there with my cousins and enjoyed going out to the park with them. I even stopped wearing my mask and gloves but it made me feel very vulnerable and scared. When we arrived back home, I found out that my school had opened a full week earlier! They had sent a letter to our house but we didn’t get it because we weren’t there! My mother told me that the school had phoned her while we were away but she had decided not to tell me so that I would be able to enjoy my holiday!

I was very scared to start school. I had so many questions; how would we keep social distancing? In Eretz Yisroel so many people became ill after schools opened, would I also become ill? What would happen if I did become ill? Would my friends still be my friends after over 3 months?

When I finally got to school after a sleepless night I saw that no one was keeping to social distancing and I was very worried. I didn’t play with anyone during break time and squeezed myself into the wall because my place in the classroom wasn’t a full 2 metres away from the girl next to me; it was actually barely 1m! They are all crazy! Do they realise how dangerous it is?

My headmistress explained to me about ‘bubbles’ and that school are doing everything that the government says is safe. We also washed our hands very often.

I was scared to go into the bathroom with other girls so I preferred to use the sanitiser that my father had given me. But still I’m not sure. What do you think?

Do you think I can really play ‘catch’ and let my friends in my bubble touch me?

Energy, Force and Motion You can create your own contraptions that create energy which creates a force - a "push" which in turn can cause something to move - motion!

ROCKET LAUNCHER

You need: An empty soda bottle A piece of card (we used the lid of a tinfoil container Some paper, scissors and selotape Instructions:

Create a pipe by rolling the card so that it fits well into a bottle. secure with some tape.

Wrap a paper securely around it and tape.

Wrap a second paper around it more loosely so that it can slip off. Let the paper stick out an extra 3 cm. Create a nozzle for your rocket and tape so air does not escape.

Cut out a set of wings and tape to rocket.

Time to Launch: Put the launcher (bottle) on the floor with the rocket ready for take-off.

Count backwards from 10 to 0 and squeeze the bottle hard.

RUBBER CANNON SHOOTER What you need: A tube that is wider than a bottle (we used the tube of a plastic tablecloth roll). They suggest a Pringles container.

Two strong elastic bands A small water bottle A pencil Scissors Different balls Instructions Cut two slits on either side of tube Make a hole on either side of bottle towards top and put a pencil through.

Put the bottle in the tube at end without slots. Put elastics into slots and attach to pencil on either side.

Voila! A cannon!

What you need: A plastic spoon Elastic Bands 7 ice-pop sticks Instructions Pile up five ice-pop sticks and secure with band at one end.

Take two sticks placing one above the pile and one below like the wings of an aeroplane. Criss-cross an elastic across the middle to secure making sure the "wings" are about a three cm from the joined end. Secure a plastic spoon at open end of catapult, with your last elastic. Place a pom pom at end and Presto!

What you need: A long piece of string Different shaped balloons Sellotape Straws Thread a piece of straw about 4 cm long onto string of about 4 meters in length.

Tie each end of string to a chair or two people can hold ends tightly.

Blow up balloon but don't knot. Stick center of balloon onto straw and push to one end of string. Release balloon. You have launched a balloon rocket!

Now try different shaped and sized balloons. Which went the quickest, the furthest?

Not Everything That Grows Is Alive!

As surreal as all this Coronavirus business has been, it has afforded us all manner of interesting opportunities, such as hunting from frogs and snail racing – neither of which the Lively Family engaged in. We did Thermite, we did Geodesic dome construction, we cooked and baked until there was nothing left in the house, but we also grew crystals.

What are crystals? Well, the are glass-like objects that have a very distinct shape. Crystals can be grown from all sorts of chemicals and have all sorts of real-world uses.

Do you have a digital watch? Then the heart beating inside it is a quartz crystal that resonates at a particular frequency. What that means is that when you pass a current through a crystal it will produce an electrical wave that is very precise – it will “beat” thousand of times per second. All you need to to is count every 32,671 “beats” and one second has passed.

Where so such crystals come from? They are usually mined from the ground, but they can be manufactured as well.

How do you “manufacture” a crystal? In our case we used Potassium Aluminium Sulphate which is commonly known as Alum. Since we had purchased a crystal growing kit a while back, we had Alum already mixed with food dye.

The first step is to produce a supersaturated liquid. All this means is that as much Alum powder was dissolved into water as possible. There is a simple trick that can be used to do this without too much effort or complicated equipment.

We volunteered a small milchige pot (you can use fleishig, but in this case She Who Must Be Obeyed objected, and we don’t have small fleishige pots anyway) and placed a very thoroughly cleaned jam jar in the centre.

Next, warm water was added to the pot and the jar, until both were pretty full. The water was heated until it boiled. Now, what’s clever about this is that the liquid inside the jar will never get hotter than 100 degrees centigrade. Well, it won’t, provided you remember you left the pot on the stove and don’t let the water evaporate (ahem).

So, once the water in the pot is boiling, the Alum is added to the water in the jar. Instantly the water changes to a deep red, since the Alum we had was full of red dye.

More and more Alum is added until it stops dissolving. At this point, the liquid in the jar is highly saturated. Just to be sure, we let the pot boil for another hour or so, guaranteeing that we had a supersaturated liquid.

Now, many moons ago we had a fish tank. We filled the tank with many fish on many occasions since the fish tended to die after a while. Eventually we gave up, and now we have repurposed it as a crystal growing lab. The tank was filled with a few litres of water, the heater was switched on and now it became the perfect environment for growing crystals.

The jam jar was allowed to cool for a while, and then we attached some thread to the lid, in which we had perforated two holes to tie the thread through.

In this environment, Alum crystal start to grow immediately on any “seed” surface, that is to say any part of the jar that is not perfectly smooth. Well, the thread is a lot rougher than the surface of the glass, so crystals – very tiny crystals – start to form on it almost immediately.

After an hour or so, the tiny seed crystals on the thread had grown to thousands of times its original size, with beautiful facets.

Growing crystal is a great hobby and quite an art. It takes a lot of experience (and money) to be able to grow large crystals. But crystals are grown for industrial uses as well.

Rolls Royce is a company well known for its expensive cars, but there is another side to the firm, and that’s the manufacture of turbine engines for the aircraft business. The blades inside a bypass turbine engine (yup, jet engines aren’t used on passenger aircraft any more) have to cope with temperatures in excess of 1700 degrees centigrade and they spin at 12,000 rpm. Silverfoil isn’t going to cut it.

Instead, at the Advanced Blade Casting Facility, Rolls Royce now grow single-crystal blades from a nickel superalloy. I don’t think they use cooking pots for that however. Each blade at the business end of the engine extracts the equivalent power of a Formula 1 racing car, and the centrifugal force acting on it from the spinning is roughly equivalent to a double decker bus. Exactly how they do all this is a bit of a secret, but the point is that by growing a single crystal lump of metal, you now have the strongest metal you can possibly get for this sort of thing.

Crystals can be grown from all sorts of chemicals, so our next adventure in crystal growing is going to be with sugar and salt. Yummy!

EASY PEASY MEATY SUPPER By aunty Tirza

The reason this is written in red is to remind you that it is a fleishige supper. I actually got this idea from Shoshana Prijs, and we did it for Wednesday night supper. This is a very good idea for holidays as you can prepare everything in the morning but it is quick to cook when you come home.

First, we bought a bag of pitta bread.

Next, and this part happens only in the Nussbaum household, Uncle Yisroel made a mince meat mixture. Next, put the mincemeat into a cut open pitta bread, and put in the George for about 10 minutes. Take out and serve with veg. Talk about a healthy, quick supper.

LEWIS’ VISIT TO 89 What do you think? Mazel tov, we were so excited to hear that Aunty Tzirel lewis got engaged. That meant that not only were the Nussbaum’s So excited about the lovely news, it also meant that we were going to have our first visit of einiklech since covid started ( of course we were also excited to be seeing tatty and mummy Lewis, its just……..!).

So, first we had to find out what we could welcome them with in terms Of food. Turns out they are a chip off the old block- so noodles and cheese it was. We were so excited when everyone came in; our new Bar mitzva boy in his hat and jacket; Mordechai, a big boy looking after Menachem so nicely, Tzvi Yehudah with his trademark smile, Boruch so Helpful as always, and Yitzi being a very well behaved boy. Suchnachas for Zeyde and Oma. As you can see from the pictures, a lovely time was had by all. It was very gemutlich in the kitchen with everyone catching up on news and schmooze. After a while, all got changed to go to the simcha, and from The engagement, they went straight back home. We are all so excited to

This Wednesday Refoel invited his Lewis nephews to play ball with him in the back garden. They had a grand time kicking the ball around and everyone was a winner! When they were all hot and sweaty, they came inside for some ice pops and then the Lewises went home.

Everyone enjoyed themselves and we now hope to make this happen more regularly iyh!
