LOWER BROUGHTON GETS REAL MIKVAH!! By Boruch Lewis
We were digging and we said let’s dig. Then we put a gutter for water and there was a mikvah. We poured water through the gutter and it was getting higher. Then we came in and 8 supper and we went back outside and the mikvah was dry and guess how the kitchen looked full of footsteps.

The mikvah in the making. Looks like fun to me!!!
By Mordehai Lewis
Bored? Do you know what family Lewis did this Sunday? They spent most of their day digging in in their back garden. Ummmm,do you wonder why? We also wonder why; for nothing. We dug from 10cm to 20cm deep then we got to some wet soil ,so we got all excited and we carried on until it was so deep that we hit some hard concrete that we couldn’t penetrate. Instead we dug wider from both sides: It was about 45cm deep. Then my father said to stop because we dug by the wall and it could be dangerous because the mud was holding the foundation of the wall, also there was mud all over the garden. So we stopped. Then we took a piece of wood and put it over the length of the hole and we go on it and try to balance. Also we got some old carpet to cover the hole by night. After that it was getting boring, so we thought of making a water flow because we had some gutters in our garden. We tried to get it working we took a small gutter about 35cm long and tried all ways but there was only one way which was to put it on the width side half down and pour water from the top. That was too boring. Just then we found another gutter which was bout 4 meters long. We didnt have any choice so we just took it and put it
next to the wall sloping down-woods so the end of the big long ne nd the top of small one connect. When you pour water at the high part of the big gutter it rolls down the big one and when it reaches the end of the big one it reaches the top of the small one, it rolls down the small one and goes into the big hole. the more water you pour the more flooded it gets and we have lots of fun flooding it but there was one problem. The water eventually goes in the ground so we had to come up with an idea, and we got one. in the morning when all the water is out from the other way, we will put a plastic table cloth at the bottom of the hole and fill it up with water and the water won’t sink in. Then it became a פסולע מקוה.
This is true!

THE ROBBERY By SHMULY LEWIS OWWW… what happened?… Our next door neighbour of two years old fell. They took her to hospital and gave her a sling. That same day {earlier on} they put up a trampoline. Because they were so worried that it would get stolen, they locked it to their gate. Late that night {4:00 in the morning} the girl that fell woke up her oldest brother with pain. Her brother took her to his mother. The brother said, “while we are here let’s see if the trampoline is still there?” It was, but a strange looking person was looking at their house. A minute later they heard noises so the mother went to see what was going on and saw another strange man downstairs. She woke up her husband and he called the police straight away. The police came 5 minutes later. He also went downstairs because he didn’t believe his wife. When he went down he also saw the person but now he was holding a bag of all their silver including their Shabbos candelabra. The father had a quick look at the dining room table… and the large amount of money that he put on the table before he went to bed… was still there. He wanted to let the robber out of the front door - just to get him out the house but a second later he saw the robber jump out the back window {in the kitchen} … and he droped the silver as he was about to jump out. When the police came they said they already searchead the area and of course they said that they are nowhere to be seen. In the morning we saw a crime investigaion van; they found a few finger prints and some blood on the blinds and on the alley gate {that should have been locked but wasn’t}. Do you think they will ever find them? 6

INTERVEIW Y U
We thank Refoel Herszaft for giving me some of his precious time to allow us to interview him. Refoel is actually self-isolating as he seems to have caught coronavirus, probably in the shop!
RH: The boss decides what profit percentage they are going to make on their products. When it comes to offers, either the suppliers gives them or we ask them for some. LY: And then they give the offer to LY: How long have you been you? working in Habers and how did you RH: Depends; sometimes yes and get the sometimes no. For example, if job? they have too much stock or it RH: I’ve been working there for two hasn’t got a long sell-by date or and a half years now. they want people to try it then LY:How do you choose what to they will give offers. Some order for the shop? suppliers give everyone the same RH: We have 2 levels, level one is offer. Some give everyone seeing what people need and the different offers. next level is ordering what people LY: Does that make competition? ask for. RH: Yes. Of course! LY: But what if someone orders LY: Where do you store everything something that isn’t popular? once you get it? RH:We generally won’t buy it. We RH: It is a must for every shop to will only buy things we think will have storage space. Here in sell well, but we try to satisfy Habers everything is stored on our customers. site. Some big shops worldwide LY: Who decides the prices 10 and the offers?
buy in bulk to get a cheaper price and then they have to have a special warehouse to store it all. LY: Where on-site do you store it? Upstairs? RH: Upstairs and and we also store things in the house next door. LY: How far ahead do you order your things for example, when do you order your Peasch stuff? RH: As for peasch stuff most things are ordered 1-3 weeks before they arrive. Everyday stuff is ordered 1-3 days before it arrives. LY: Wow! I imagined that you order it long before! What is the most popular product that you sell? RH: The most popular product is definitely milk and eggs. LY: What do you do to attract customers? RH: We make lots of offers. This attracts customers who come for the offers and then buy other things. Now, with coronavirus, we have a problem because suppliers don’t know if they will have enough stock so they are not giving offers. We also have our fish tank to attract kids who ask their parents to go to the “fishy shop”. We have a special company who comes to clean it out every so often. LY: What is the hardest job in the shop? 11
RH: Everyone will say that their job is the hardest but in my opinion it is the boss who has it hardest (but I am not the boss). LY: I’m sure not all your customers are easy to deal with. What do you like customers to do? RH: Customers are allowed to complain but workers like recognition of their hard work. LY: So it has to be both together? RH: Yes basically. If you want to complain about something, that’s fine and we usually want to hear so we can correct problems, but also tell us when things are good! LY: What is the most annoying type of customer? RH: When customers come to buy 2 things, drive you mad, and then return it. LY: I guess that is annoying. What is the busiest time of the year? RH: Before Peasch or really before all yomim tovim. LY: How has shopping been affected by COVID 19 (coronavirus)? RH: Shopping has been affected by COVID 19 in a few ways. 1. There is not enough staff because A) staff members who are older or have underlting health conditions are not coming in B) Anyone with symptoms (like me) can’t come in. 2. We can’t let more than 20
people in at a time. 3. There is not always enough stock of certain items, especially when shipments get delayed. 4. The suppliers are not giving many offers. What precautions are you taking now? 1. We don’t let more than 20 people in at a time. 2. Everyone that comes in must wear gloves. LY:Are you particular about which hechsherim you buy for the shop?
RH: No not particular at all. We take anything that is kosher under any hechsher, Badatz, OU and lots of others. We take it because we have a wide customer base so everyone needs to be careful to check the hechsherim themselves. LY: You have a very nice wine department. Is your wine store popular? RH: Yes it is very popular. LY: Is it being affected by COVID 19 (coronavirus)? RH: Yes. Because when people don’t know if they will be able to keep their job, they cut out luxuries and wine is a luxury. LY: What is your most expensive alcoholic beverage? RH: A wine called Yatir Forest. The most expensive beverages cost between £182 to £200. We have a wine connoisseur who chooses the range. 12 Thank you Refoel for this interview. It really was interesting.
