Climate change is having a profound impact on global ecosystems and is most dramatically evident in northern landscapes and communities. In the face of these challenges, Inuit knowledge and community-building are increasingly at risk, making it essential to adopt a variety of approaches, in combination with Inuit and settler collaboration.

Dark Ice demonstrates the intersections between the unique artistic, studio, and land-based practices of Leslie Reid of Ottawa, ON, and Robert Kautuk of Kangiqtugaapik (Clyde River), NU. Alongside critical curatorial work, the exhibition features photographs, paintings and videos of Arctic land and ice, and of communities and their experiences.

Together, these two artists create meaningful research and visualizations that foster diversified perspectives around climate change. Kautuk and Reid’s collaboration combines their experiences to develop a dialogue that maps the Arctic and offers a promising path forward in the face of global warming.

This exhibition is organized and circulated by Ottawa Art Gallery and curated by Rebecca Basciano.

An accompanying trilingual publication to Dark Ice explores the intersection between the unique artistic, studio, and land-based practices of Reid and Kautuk.

In addition to beautiful colour illustrations, this volume features a critical essay by curator Rebecca Basciano, as well as a conversation between the artists facilitated by Dr. Heather Igloliorte. The publication is available for purchase beginning October 4.

This exhibition was also realized with the support of the City of Ottawa, the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts, as well as the RBC Foundation’s support of the OAG’s Connect: Artist Mentorship Program.

SCULPTING LIFE

Inuit carvings from the permanent collection

November 1, 2024 - July 6, 2025

Sculpting Life is an exploration of the Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery’s Inuit carving collection. The works depict wildlife and the human experience of living in the Arctic—documenting the enduring relationships of northern communities as seen through the skilled hands of Inuit artists.

Predominantly from the Nunavik (Arctic Quebec) region, the carvings were created in the 50s offering a unique perspective of the genesis of the Inuit art movement.

Discover JNAAG

Did you know that the Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery is proudly designated as a Category A organization by the Department of Canadian Heritage? This esteemed designation signifies our commitment to the enduring preservation of cultural artifacts.

As a Category A organization, we have the privilege of engaging in reciprocal borrowing and lending with other designated galleries across Canada and internationally. With a collection boasting over 1300 artworks secured in our vault, we are frequently approached for loans from our esteemed collection. Recently, we loaned one of our prized A.Y. Jackson paintings to the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg, Ontario. This collaborative effort contributes to the captivating exhibition Jackson’s Wars: A.Y. Jackson before the Group of Seven, curated by historian Douglas Hunter. This exhibition delves into the rarely seen paintings from Jackson’s journeys through Europe and his poignant portrayals of rural life in Quebec and Ontario.

Experience the exhibition firsthand by visiting the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg, Ontario, or learn more about the exhibition online at www.mcmichael.com. This extraordinary exhibition runs from May 25, 2024 to February 2, 2025.
