Ontario Public Library Week Thanks to everyone who helped us celebrate Ontario Public Library Week from October 16 to 20, 2023.

Libraries are an important part of every stage of our life, and we are happy you celebrated with us.

Visiting Fall Fairs Lambton County Library was thrilled to see so many people at the fall fairs this year in Alvinston, Brigden, Forest, Petrolia, and Wyoming. We hosted an information booth at each fair where visitors could play Yardzee to win Lambton County Library promotional materials. Thanks to everyone who stopped by to play or visit!

Goodbye to Mallroad Library We will say goodbye to Mallroad Library in November as we pack up and prepare a new library at Clearwater Arena on Wellington Street in Sarnia. The new library, located on the second floor overlooking an ice pad, will have the added benefit of a program room / private meeting space, which is not currently available at Mallroad Library. Mallroad Library’s last day in operation was October 31 and the book return bin will only remain available at Mallroad Library until November 9. From November 10 until Clearwater Library opens in January, patrons are asked to visit neighbouring libraries in downtown Sarnia, Point Edward, and Bright’s Grove. Stay tuned for news about the opening of Clearwater Library, anticipated to occur in January.

November is Make a Will Month Making a will is important, yet over half of Canadian adults don’t have one. When you create a will, you can select the person who will manage your estate and decide how your assets will be distributed.

This decision can save your loved ones from experiencing delays in the administration of your estate and having to pay unnecessary expenses.

Christina Sydorko from the Oil Museum of Canada will speak about the building the St. Clair tunnel. Train delays were costing money and the solution was digging a tunnel in the soft clay beneath one of the fastest rivers to join Canada and the United States by a ribbon of steel.

Emergency Planners from your community will discuss emergency planning and household preparedness. Participants will learn how to create their own personal emergency plan, review shelter-in-place and evacuations, and use Sarnia-Lambton Alerts and Environment Canada’s emergency tools. This workshop will close with a Q&A and a draw for a starter Emergency Response Kit.

Judging Books by their Cover The Book Cover Design Contest saw over 70 submissions from kids aged 5 to 12 years old.

Lambton County Library in partnership with Gallery in the Grove and the Canadian Society of Children’s Authors, Illustrators, and Performers (CANSCAIP) teamed up to host the Book Cover Design Contest. During the summer months, kids aged 5-12 were invited to reimagine their favourite book’s cover using any art medium, and submit their artwork to their local library.

A total of 72 submissions were received and a panel of jurors selected six winners to be displayed alongside the work of professional artists and illustrators at CANSCAIP in the Grove: The Art of Picturebooks from September 9 to October 28. All Book Cover Design submissions were on display at Sarnia Library from September 22 to October 22.

“The Book Cover Design Contest encouraged kids to use their imaginations and artistic skills to represent their favourite book through art,” said Vanitia Campbell, Public Services Coordinator – Youth, with Lambton County Library. “We would like to acknowledge all of the kids who responded to the call for submissions with their creative entries. The entries were wonderful!”
