The Summer Reading Program has blasted off and many out of this world programs are happening at your local library all summer long!

Beginning on page 11 you will find a list of events and programs at each library for the months of July and August. Programs are always being added. For the most up to date program and event information visit lclibrary.ca/calendar and follow up on Facebook and Twitter.

Start Your Family History Research Today!

Travel back through centuries and become an eyewitness to history with your library card!

In addition to a limited collection of local history materials at select library locations, your library card gets you access to tools like Ancestry Library Edition and ProQuest Historical Newspapers.

Ancestry Library Edition, available at any library location using public computers or public wi-fi, is an online searching program with approximately 4,000 databases and billions of names. Ancestry Library Edition includes census, vital, church, court, and immigration records.

Lambton County Library cardholders can also access full digital archives of three major newspapers, The Windsor Star, The Globe and Mail and The Toronto Star from home with ProQuest Historical Newspapers. Get insight into everyday lives, places and events of the past with full text searching of historical content, which is among the most sought-after primary source material.

Source materials, like newspapers and records, can be valuable for anyone conducting family genealogy.

These resources also compliment the services offered by Lambton County Archives, who are subject matter experts in the fields of history and genealogy.

Summer Reading Program Over the next two months we encourage you to explore this universe and many others through activities, books and programs at Lambton County Library. The more you explore, read and participate, the more chances that you’ll return to Earth with fun prizes.

GALACTIC SCAVENGER HUNT

Each week of the Summer Reading Program, you can check out your local library’s windows / doors or the library’s website at lclibrary.ca for a clue leading you to a secret letter. Over the summer there will be six different clues and these six letters will spell out a secret code word. Once you have discovered the secret code word you can submit it online at lclibrary.ca/srp for your chance to win one of five space themed LEGO kits.

There is a different code word for each library location. Visit the same location every week to correctly solve the secret code word.

STORYWALKS

Get outside this summer and visit the permanent and temporary StoryWalks across Lambton County. There is a different secret word at each StoryWalk location and you will find the secret word on the last page of each book.

Participants will earn one ballot for every StoryWalk visited with a secret word submitted for a chance to win a star registered in your name. Submit the secret words at lclibrary.ca/srp.

OUT OF THIS WORLD GOOD DEEDS

Throughout the summer, you and your friends and family are encouraged to be on the lookout for superstars in the community. Whether it’s a family member, friend, acquaintance or someone you admire in your community, when you see a good deed visit lclibrary.ca/srp and submit the name of the young person and their good deed. You will earn one ballot for making the submission, and the superstars will earn one ballot for each good deed submitted on their behalf, for a chance to win a prize at the end of the Summer Reading Program. There will be one prize for each age group: •

Winners must live, work, attend school or own property in Lambton County.

STAR GAZING PARTIES

Explore the galaxy with the Sarnia Astronomical Society as they give you a tour of the night sky using telescopes and projection screens. Both parties will take place during the Perseids Meteor Shower.

ASTRONAUT TRAINING CAMP

See if you have what it takes to train like an astronaut.

Test your agility, balance, strength, and speed in the astronaut obstacle course. Create your own model of the solar system; hone your astronaut vision with the solar system scavenger hunt, practice the art of using an extendable arm with astronaut ball sorting;take an out of this world photo with a green screen at the time of registration and choose your space background. When you complete your training, you will be able to take home a copy of your photo.

THE CELESTIAL BEAR: THE SIX NATIONS’ NIGHT SKY - PLANETARIUM SHOW

Learn about Indigenous astronomy in this fascinating show that blends local culture, history and modern-day astronomy that shares the Six Nations’ sky lore and language through traditional Indigenous night-sky stories.

With narration and visuals by a live presentation and prerecorded excerpts (in English, Mohawk and Cayuga), learn about the story of the bear and the brothers and how it is retold every year with the rotating patterns in the night sky. See the same stars with a completely different understanding and appreciation!

TEEN COSMIC READING CHALLENGE

Teens across Lambton County are encouraged to set reading goals and to participate in fun activities this summer by taking part in the Teen Cosmic Reading Challenge! Teens can register online or at their local library and report the number of days on which they have read for a minimum of 15 minutes. For every fourteen days reported, teens will earn one free book to a maximum of three book prizes.

The following five activities support your child’s development of early literacy skills. In addition, reading 1,000 books before Kindergarten promotes literacy and encourages parent and child bonding through reading. Visit Lambton County Library and start your own 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Challenge with your child today.

R E A D

Reading together is the single most important way to help children get ready to read. Reading together increases vocabulary and general knowledge. It helps children learn how print books work. Shared reading also helps children develop an interest in reading. Children who enjoy being read to are more likely to want to learn how to read themselves.

W R I T E

Reading and writing go together. Both represent spoken language and communicate information. Children can learn pre-reading skills through writing activities.

Children learn language and other literacy skills by listening to their parents and others talk. As children hear spoken language, they learn new words and what they mean. They learn about the world around them and important general knowledge. This will help children understand the meaning of what they read.

Songs are a wonderful way to learn about language. Singing also slows down language so children can hear the different sounds that make up words. This helps when children begin to read printed language.

Children learn a lot about language through play. Play helps children understand that spoken and written words can stand for real objects and experiences. Play also helps children express themselves and put thoughts into words.

Early Literacy Help guide your child to get a head start on early literacy at Lambton County Library. Early literacy is what kids know about reading and writing before they can actually read and write. Lambton County Library offers a variety of programs that help foster early literacy, family literacy and lifelong learning. Check out programs happening at your library!

July 23 - Friendly Monster Straw Painting: Create and design a friendly monster using a straw painting technique. All materials are provided. Paint will be used, so dress accordingly.

July 27 - Rocket: Become a mini rocket scientist and create a mini rocket out of paper.

July 30 - Constellation Bookmarks: Doodle, glue, and draw your own constellation bookmark while learning about the constellations used to navigate, to tell stories, and to understand the sky. Use your constellation bookmark to help you chart your way through your next adventure.

August 2 - String Painting: Create interesting designs by pulling string through paint on black cardstock to make your designs really pop.

August 8 - Stained Glass: Get creative and make your own stained glass picture with this fun, artistic activity!

Participate in this program and create your own stain glass design.

August 13 - Model Rockets: Listen to a space-themed story and build your own rocket ship that is out of this world.

August 13 - LEGO Space Themed Building: Build a space-themed LEGO masterpiece. From space ships to space stations, or more.

August 22 - Paint Your Own Planets: Create your own planets (or even your own solar system) as you experiment with colours, stencils, and techniques.

Transform organic and upcycled materials with this crafting program designed to bring new life to everyday objects. All materials provided.

July - Talk the Talk: Write a story using only dialogue, without any action or description. The word count limit is 200 words, and the prompt is “cold”.

Choose a book that is disguised, open it to reveal what it is, read a short summary of the story, and keep it or pass it on to the next person. If you choose, you may then borrow that book using your library card and return for the next meeting to tell us what you liked or didn’t like about it.

Use glow-in-thedark paint to recreate your favourite constellation on a personalized coaster - great for putting your glass on at night, or giving to a friend as a surprise!

July 26 – Upcycled Sculptures: Destroy something old to make something new! Bring in old toys or use our materials to destroy old toys/objects and turn them into creative sculptures or works of art. This destructive way of giving something new life is a great way to burn off energy.

We’ll be reading Hadfield’s book together, then learning more about the astronaut himself as we create moon sand from simple every day items, and make our own DIY astronauts.

July 23 – Alphabet Space Puzzle: Journey through space as you listen to a space-themed story and create your own puzzle that depicts the solar system! Each piece of the puzzle also has a different letter of the alphabet on it, a great tool to take home to use with kids who are learning letters/the alphabet.

August 6 – Candy Constellations: Use sweet treats to create a constellation themed game. Listen to a spacethemed story and use it as inspiration for a constellation craft! See if you can make all the candies land on the stars that make up the constellation in the mini ring game you’ve created.

What would rocks look like if they came from other planets? A universe of possibilities for you to paint.

Create your very own galaxy rocks! These bits of earth make up our planet, but give them some spacey paint to see what they might look like if they came from another planet. Learn how to save seeds from this year’s One Seed Lambton plants for next year’s planting. Attend this workshop to learn from Michael Schimp, a certified seed collector, how to save seeds. He will explain how to plan ahead to make sure your seeds mature properly. He will also explain how to harvest the matured seeds, how to dry your seeds, and how to store them safely for next year’s planting. Michael will also explain the process for end of season garden care and how to put your containers or garden to bed for the winter.
