On many mornings, I imagine hundreds of people wake up, stretch their arms and set out for a Lake County forest preserve to enjoy its beauty and get to work. They use their hands, skill, strength and knowledge to maintain the complex ecosystems in each preserve. Some lead education programs, grow food for residents, collect seeds or count wildlife. They do this out of love.

The inspiring feature article in this issue captures the generous spirit of our volunteers. I’m not alone in extending my deepest gratitude for their work.

The work will only increase. We’re two years into a historic investment in land preservation, funded in part by the overwhelmingly supported referendum. Beginning in 2024, we have protected 784 more acres, with additional property under contract. It’s essential we preserve precious open space before it is lost to development.

Residents often ask: “When are you going to remove the [insert invasive species] and add a trail in [insert favorite forest preserve]?”

As anyone with a yard or garden knows, stewardship is an ongoing commitment.

Trails and overlooks, picnic shelters and pristine natural habitats require steady, long-term maintenance and ecological management. We simply can’t get to every acre with current funding restrictions.

Grants, donations and our dedicated volunteers are vital resources, but they can’t cover the daily costs of maintaining thousands of acres in Illinois’ secondlargest forest preserve system.

To properly care for every diverse habitat, we need stable, increased operational funding. The same is true for keeping trails and amenities accessible, safe and clean and protecting Lake County’s endangered and threatened species.

Preserving land is vital for balance in a growing and warming world. Caring for it well is a deeper promise to future generations.

We strive to fulfill that promise every day.

The Draw of Duck Farm Mat Sullivan’s (below) volunteer story started with a degraded lake. As an intern with the Lake County Health Department (LCHD) six years ago, he tackled an assignment at Slough Lake within Duck Farm Forest Preserve (Lake Villa).

The 37-acre waterbody was struggling with invasive carp, high phosphorus levels and frequent blue-green algal blooms. Carp are bad news for water quality. Adult carp thrash around during

spawning, stirring up sediment on the lakebed.

They stir it up even more by feeding on bottomdwelling insect larvae and crustaceans—aquatic animals with hard shells, such as crayfish.

Sullivan was on the case. During his internship, he helped monitor conditions and remove over 3,000 carp totaling nearly 11,000 pounds from the lake.

It was a turning point. In 2024, LCHD measured a 154% increase in water clarity and an 80% drop in phosphorus levels compared to 2010.

Today, Sullivan works full time at LCHD but felt drawn back to Duck Farm and Slough Lake.

He became a restoration volunteer, then a site steward. Stewards lead teams of restoration volunteers, hosting frequent workdays that last 2–3 hours. They complete certifications in chainsaw safety and herbicide application.

When Diane Phillips (above) took a career aptitude test in high school, she got two very different results: forest ranger or accountant. For 35 years, Phillips has taught accounting, prepared taxes and worked as a high school administrator.

She’s taught countless programs: Birdwatching Hot Spots, Sunday Strolls, guided Hike Lake County walks. Perhaps her favorites to teach have been community campfires held on Friday nights at Greenbelt Forest Preserve (North Chicago).

These casual evenings invite families to roast marshmallows, hear stories, make crafts and take a nighttime hike. They reach new audiences.

“Some people have told me, ‘I’ve never had a s’more,’ or ‘I’ve never been to a forest preserve,’” said Phillips. “That always made my heart warm, to know we’ve brought another group into a forest preserve.” Even after 35 years, she still loves volunteering. “Maybe that career test was right.”

Take that Positivity Forward Dave Szaflarski (below right) has been visiting Oriole Grove Forest Preserve (Lake Bluff) since before it was called Oriole Grove. He knew the 86-acre area along the Skokie River as Lake Bluff Preserve during his childhood. “My friend lived

down the street. We loved exploring the woods, finding old bottles, building forts, watching trains go by,” Szaflarski said. In adulthood, he volunteered to become Oriole Grove’s site steward.

For years, he removed invasive buckthorn, dame’s rocket and garlic mustard, applied herbicide and mowed grass trails, often solo.

But not always. A partnership with Lake Forest High School brings environmental studies students to volunteer workdays—in exchange for extra credit. “If they bring their parents, they can get double credit,” said Szaflarski.

One recent project involved digging up the remnants of a 1920s-era chain-link fence installed when the land was a private estate. Szaflarski appreciates the students’ manual labor while connecting it to deeper lessons. “I tell them, ‘You made the right decision today coming to a workday. Take that positivity forward.’”

Earlier this year, Szaflarski received the Forest Preserves’ Gilman Award to honor his 29 years of service. It celebrates volunteers who demonstrate dedication to an intense project or position. “It was a surprise. I never thought, ‘Oh, it’s my turn to win,’” he said. “It’s almost like the Academy Awards.”

Curiosity and Cursive Most Wednesdays, Barbara Johnson (above) boots up a laptop in the Dunn Museum’s Teich Family Reading Room (Libertyville), selects a handwritten archival document and types it into the 21st century.

Some days, it’s the meeting minutes of a local club describing a potluck. Others, it’s a ledger from the 1840s describing transactions at a general store in Half Day, a former unincorporated town annexed by the village of Vernon Hills in 1993.

The variety of subjects and the challenge of decoding old cursive keep Johnson coming back to help digitize the Museum’s archives. “It’s like in elementary school when my teachers gave us hieroglyphics and I liked decoding those,” Johnson said. “This is paleography”—the study of historical handwriting systems.

Translation continues to be a specialty. She’s written Spanish captions for videos in the Museum’s galleries. Solving historical mysteries is another passion.

Combing through records, Johnson determined Bess Bower Dunn (1877–1959), the Museum’s namesake, is buried at the Northshore Garden of Memories in North Chicago. Dunn was Lake County’s first official historian, serving for 60 years. “It took a while to find that out,” said

Johnson. “Once I get an idea in my head, I go after it. I investigate.”

A Garden that Gives Back

From May through October, the pair grows watermelons, tomatoes, pumpkins, corn, green beans, spinach and carrots. Residents may help themselves to ripe produce.

“We’re giving back to the community, and it feels really good,” said Ross, a program manager for a Chicago insurance company. “It’s fulfilling. It’s also a chance to slow down and reconnect.”

More volunteers—and watchful neighbors to prevent damage by animals and weather—are always welcome.

PRESERVENEWS Half-Price Admission During Renovations This fall, we’re enhancing the permanent galleries at the Dunn Museum (Libertyville). Made possible through a $24,750 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the project will showcase new items from the collections, expand opportunities for educators and enhance displays highlighting Latino heritage and culture.

It will also include bilingual exhibits and loaned artifacts, building on our partnership with College of Lake County.

About half the galleries will be closed September 20–October 31 for renovations. Some galleries, special exhibitions and the Museum Gift Shop will remain open. The refreshed galleries will reopen alongside a new special exhibition, Abuelita’s Kitchen: Mexican Food Stories. See page 15 for details.

DIRECTOR, VOLUNTEER EARN NATIONAL RECOGNITION The National Association of County Park and Recreation Officials (NACPRO) honored our Land Preservation Director Ken Jones with its Professional Fellow Award and volunteer Dale Shields with an Outstanding Volunteer Award.

NACPRO represents about 120 county and regional park, recreation and conservation agencies across the United States.

Jones was recognized for leadership in land conservation and his role in advancing major preservation initiatives throughout Lake County.

BRANT NAMED EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE PRESERVATION FOUNDATION Ryan Brant joined the Lake County Forest Preserves as executive director of the Preservation Foundation. He brings more than 20 years of leadership, fundraising and business development experience across the nonprofit, public and private sectors.

Brant will lead efforts to grow philanthropic support for Forest Preserves projects and programs. A key priority is completing Every Acre Strong, a community campaign to build a $20 million endowment for the long-term care of Lake County’s forest preserves.

A Lake County resident and frequent trail user, he previously served as general manager of Cardinal State LLC, an ecological restoration and landscape construction company. He holds a master’s degree from St. Ambrose University and a bachelor’s degree from Buena Vista University.

Celebrate OAKtober with a Sip & Stroll on October 3 October is Oak Awareness Month in Illinois, and the Preservation Foundation is getting into the spirit with an OAKtober Sip & Stroll on Saturday, October 3 at Ryerson Conservation Area (Riverwoods). This event is for ages 21+ only.

Learn about the importance of oaks to whiskey and bourbon production through a talk and tasting with Journeyman Distillery in Three Oaks, Michigan and Whiskey Acres Distilling Co. in DeKalb, Illinois. Then discover oaks’ role as keystone species in Lake County on a guided hike in a designated old-growth forest.

Guests will receive a tasting glass, three tastings from each distillery and light bites.

All proceeds benefit the Every Acre Strong campaign. Of those, only 1–5 seedlings survive their first year. Ultimately, about 1 acorn in 10,000 will ever become a mature oak tree.

The 2025 Preservation Foundation Annual Report, published in summer, explores this Acorns to Oaks theme. The Foundation’s Annual Fund grows each year through hundreds of mostly modest donations from individuals, companies and foundations.

Growing Our Volunteer Corps Norma Zamudio’s first experience in the forest preserves was as a teenager at Fiestas Patrias, an annual event that, for several years, celebrated independence for Mexico and Central American countries. Now working as a community engagement specialist, Norma is focused on attracting new volunteers to the Forest Preserves.

She starts by spending time at community events, switching easily between English and Spanish to make residents feel welcome in the preserves.

She provides onboarding and training to new volunteers, leads group workdays and supports volunteer site stewards throughout the county.

Zamudio’s work is part of a donor-funded Community Engagement Program that aims to increase volunteer recruitment and retention.

“Donors are helping create a lasting connection between the community and the Forest Preserves,” said Zamudio. “It’s something I’ve felt throughout my whole time here.”

CHEERS TO TIGHTHEAD FOR BREWING GOOD The Beer Garden at Independence Grove (Libertyville) teamed up with Tighthead Brewing Company in Mundelein to create a new beer inspired by outdoor adventures in your forest preserves.

Trailhead IPA is a crisp, 6.2% ABV West Coast-style brew with bright citrus and pine flavors. It’s served on tap and in cans at the Beer Garden and Tighthead’s taproom.

MAKING BUILDINGS SAFER FOR BIRDS In April, crews installed Feather Friendly film on windows at Ryerson Conservation Area’s Welcome Center (Riverwoods). The polka-dot patterns are rated to reduce bird-glass collisions—called window strikes— by 95%. Window strikes often result in bird injury or death, killing over one billion birds in the U.S. per year, according to a 2024 study.

“From January 2026 through installation, we documented two bird deaths and eight window strikes,” said Education Site Specialist Jen Berlinghof. Since the film’s application, incidents have dropped to zero.

The Dunn Museum is accepting presentation proposals for the 12th annual Lake County History Symposium. This year’s theme, How Cultures and Traditions Shaped Lake County Communities, explores how generations of residents have strengthened communities by sharing their heritage through traditional food, art, celebrations, businesses or civic life.

Professional, student and enthusiastic historians are invited to submit proposals. Presentations can also be given by museums, historical societies and individuals. Submissions are accepted until November 9.

The bald eagle has been used as a U.S. emblem since 1782. It was declared the national bird in 2024 by act of Congress. Look for bald eagles near rivers, lakes and shorelines.

Open through January 3, 2027 Carving Out the Future: The Rotblatt Amrany Studio Story Discover the story behind one of the world’s most influential sculpture studios, nestled in the heart of Fort Sheridan, Illinois.

Founded in 1992 by artists Julie Rotblatt Amrany and Omri Amrany, the Rotblatt Amrany sculpture studio and school is responsible for statues, memorials and parks around the globe. The couple met while learning to carve marble in the international sculpture hub of Pietrasanta, Italy. The studio remains family-owned and operated, with their son, Itamar Amrany, now serving as creative director.

The studio is known for iconic works such as The Spirit, the Michael Jordan statue at the United Center in Chicago, and Quest for Exploration, a tribute to astronaut James Lovell at the Adler Planetarium. This exhibition showcases three decades of powerful public art and private commissions by the artists of Rotblatt Amrany Studio, offering a glimpse into the legacy that continues to shape the future of sculpture.

On exhibit December 5, 2026–February 28, 2027 Abuelita’s Kitchen: Mexican Food Stories Experience the stories and traditions passed down through generations in Abuelita’s Kitchen: Mexican Food Stories. Through family recipes, photographs, film and personal histories, this special exhibition features 10 indigenous, mestiza, Mexican-American and Afro-Mexican grandmothers who shaped culture and community one dish at a time.
