Everyone’s Story Should Be Told
Lonnelle Aquillard never dreamed that her career path would be to bring life and meaning to remembering your loved ones after they pass; but that is what she does. For 20 years, Lonnelle has been with Johnson Funeral Home after Zeb recruited her while she was looking for a job during college. In an interview, she states that the funeral director’s job is to turn your loved one’s passing into a meaningful service. As a little girl, she grew up behind Johnson Funeral Home and was good friends with Zeb Johnson’s daughter, Wendy. Johnson Funeral Home took care of her sister and father when they passed prematurely and they have always lovingly taken care of her other friends and family through the years. Aquillard recommends making prearrangements for how you would like to be remembered. Therefore, your loved ones do not have to guess as to your final wishes and it will help
them have peace of mind in a time when they are not clearheaded. As a funeral director, Lonnelle really tries to honor the life of the deceased by showcasing who they were and what they loved. She states that an obituary printed in the American Press is a great way for community members to reflect on that person’s life and a way for the family to share their history. She says, “Yeah, my story is gonna be the long one. When I sit at the table, I get to know the family and their history, which makes a difference to them because I really listen to their [loved one’s] story and then am able to relay it to the community.” Lonnelle thinks “life stories are just so important -- they show who the person was and it means so much to their family for other people to know what was so special about their loved one.”

For example, they have done lantern lightings, candlelight services and even an ice cream party at Prien Lake Park because the individual loved ice cream so much.

One change that Lonnelle has noticed throughout the years is the community being more accepting of cremations. “Lake Charles is a very traditional community, which in years past meant that when someone passed away, they would be buried in a casket and cemetery.” Today, cremation is more readily chosen by many families as a celebration of life.
