How to make a charity a beneficiary
Giving to charity can be a rewarding endeavor that makes a difference in the lives of people in need. Many people donate throughout their lives, and some people may want to impart a more lasting legacy by continuing to support a charity even after they have passed away.
Incorporating a charity into an estate plan is a great way to continue giving after you pass away. Individuals may not know how to make charities beneficiaries in their wills. A financial planner, attorney or accountant can answer the more
complex questions individuals have about naming charities as beneficiaries in a will. In the meantime, this general guide can serve as a solid foundation for individuals who want to give back in their wills.
Most people think of beneficiaries as loved ones, but a beneficiary can be any person or entity one chooses to leave money to, including nonprofit organizations. It’s relatively the same process to name a charity as a beneficiary as it is an individual.
According to the resource Trust & Will, first identify the charity that will be supported, including getting its Employer Iden-
tification Number or Taxpayer Identification Number. Next, determine which type of gift to make, which may be a predetermined financial contribution, a gift of property, or other assets like stocks. For large donations like real estate or cars, it may be best to contact the charity in advance to ensure they are able to accept such gifts. Finally, be sure to include your wishes in an estate plan. A qualified attorney can help clients draft a will that spells out their wishes in detail.
Keep in mind that charities also can be named as
beneficiaries on life insurance policies or individual retirement accounts. They also can be listed on bank accounts. Again, people are urged to discuss all options with estate planners to ensure their plans fully reflect their wishes.
When naming a charity as a beneficiary, it can be wise to inform family members and other beneficiaries so no one is caught off guard upon your death. This way the charitable gift is not held up by delays in executing the will.

At the young age of seven years old, Riley Smith, did not want to take over the family printing business, but wanted to go into the funeral industry; “The Lord put the desire in my heart to become a funeral director.” Regardless of his family thinking he was “weird”, they supported his decision to go to college for funeral science in Dallas, Texas. After receiving his degree from the Dallas Institute of Funeral Service, he worked with some family-owned funeral homes and then in 2002 opened up his first funeral home in Houston, Texas.
We Just Do Things Differently
A few years later, a funeral home came up for sale in DeQuincy,
La. and Smith decided to buy it with no intentions of staying, but to remodel and flip it, just like you would do with a house. However, the Houston traffic was wearing him thin and he decided that he preferred the laid-back, small-town community of DeQuincy. Instead of flipping the funeral home, it became Riley Smith and Sons Funeral Home in 2015. Again, his family thought he had had a mid-life crisis; wanting to move from the large city of Houston, especially since he considers himself a foodie, to a small town like DeQuincy. However, that didn’t stop him, and he with his wife and kids quickly nestled in and made themselves comfortable. The community of DeQuincy also quickly took to the Smiths as well. Riley has a philosophy of always engaging with your community and taking care of the families you serve. “Take care of the family and then everything else comes into place.” Every time a family walks through the door of Riley Smith and Sons, they stand firm that “The Lord blessed us with this family and we are going to take care of them.”
Today, Riley Smith and Sons
services families from not only the community of DeQuincy, but also the Southwest Louisiana area including but not limited to Lake Charles, Sulphur, Moss Bluff, Westlake, DeRidder and the Southeast Texas region. Although, this is Riley’s second term as the mayor of DeQuincy, his heart is fully engaged in the funeral business and helping the community in general.
Riley and his wife, Rebecca particularly enjoy feeding different organizations in the community. In May, they will be making over 500 plate lunches for teacher appreciation day to bring to the different schools supported by Riley Smith and Sons Funeral home. Once a month, Riley and Rebecca also feed the seniors who enjoy playing Bingo at the community rec center. A foodie at heart, he loves feeding his friends and family...the community.
