Moth Endangers Fir Forests in Maine

Some 250,000 acres of Maine fi r trees are at risk of defoliation from a moth that could cause millions of dollars of harm to the state's economy if ignored, forestry experts said during a webinar.

The spruce budworm is an emerging threat that has already been spotted in Aroostook County near the Canadian border earlier this year, aff ecting some 3,500 acres of trees, according 10 the University of Maine Cooperative Extension.

Forestry experts worry that the spruce budworm could spread quickly and damage up to 250,000 acres of Maine's forests next year. As pan of a webinar sponsored by the Maine State Chamber of Commerce, they recommended early intervention with aerial pesticide spraying starting in May.

"It may be in the northwest corner of Maine, but it's an issue that is going to have an eff ect," said Pal Strauch, executive director of the Maine Forest Products Council. The council estimated that if nothing is done to kill the moth, about 40 percent of the spruce wood in the state, or some I million tons, could be destroyed. That could translate into a 10 percent cut in the typical $8.1 billion that forestry products contribute to Maine's economy annually, and a loss of 3,854 direct and indirect forestry jobs.

It could cost about $15 million to apply the early pesticide treatments, said Alex Ingraham, president of Pingree Associates, which helps oversee 820,000 acres

On a sunny spring day in the south-central U.S., a logging crew was closing out a recently harvested tract and was in the process of moving equipment to the next job site. A crew member realized a load of hardwood remained at the old harvest site, so an empty truck was dispatched to transport the load. The loader was already in transit to the new location, so the skidder driver decided to use the skidder to move the loader back to the last harvest location, approximately a half-mile away, using a public highway.

The skidder operator used a skidder grapple to latch onto the trailer-mounted loader for transport. The loader boom was not fully extended in order to prevent the skidder grapple from damaging the hydraulic hoses at the end of the loader boom. This caused the loader knuckle to be elevated above 14 feet. The skidder operator visually inspected the height and believed it was lower than a standard loaded log truck.

After sitting in the cab for about 10 minutes, the skidder operator exited the cab and walked underneath the downed power lines draped over the loader. The power company and sheriff’s department arrived quickly, secured the scene, and began directing traffic and making repairs to the downed poles and utility lines.
