Sunrise Beach — North and Middle Beach only
Sunrise South Beach closure this summer
This summer big changes will be happening at Sunrise Beach. North Shore Water Reclamation District (NSWRD) will be making improvements to its facility, including the construction of a subterranean overflow basin to maintain existing infrastructure and prevent sewage from overflowing into Lake Michigan. Heavy machinery and truck traffic will be going to and from Sunrise Beach daily.

The project will begin shortly and last approximately 18 months, making it necessary to close the south beach cove for the entire 2023 beach season. Construction is anticipated to be complete in Spring 2024.
North and Middle beach and shelter will remain open for the 2023 season. The Learn to Sail program will not be held this summer though, similar programs are held in nearby communities. The south beach shelter will not be available for rentals in 2023; instead, all beach shelter rentals will be at the north shelter.
As part of their work, the NSWRD will add amenities for the Park District, rebuild the Lake Bluff Yacht Club’s compound, and make other aesthetic and public improvements to their existing facilities. Improvements will include:
• Replacement of portable toilets with two public bathrooms, one accessible for persons with disabilities.
• Replacement of one existing beach shower with two new outdoor beach showers
• Replacement of the asphalt parking lot with a more durable concrete plaza including decorative elements.
• Milling and resurfacing of the service road that extends from the top bluff edge to Sunrise Beach.
• Enhanced landscaping and building facade improvements.
The upgrades and improvements NSWRD is making to their facility will benefit both Sunrise Beach and Lake Michigan and provide a more enjoyable experience for users. The Park District is excited to be working with our community partners to improve Sunrise Beach. Find project details and updates at www.lakebluffparks.org.
