Language Arts LANGUAGE ARTS 9 A/B Grade 9 Prerequisite: None

Language Arts 9 builds upon students’ prior knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, word usage, and the mechanics of writing and emphasizes the four aspects of language use: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The course introduces and defines various genres and themes of literature, with writing exercises often linked to reading exercises.

LANGUAGE ARTS 10 A/B Grade 10 Prerequisite: None

Credit: 1.0/Year Fall/Spring Foundations & Honors

Language Arts 10 offers a balanced focus on composition and literature. Students may learn about the alternate aims and audiences of written compositions by writing persuasive, critical, and creative multi-paragraph essays and compositions. Through the study of various genres of literature, students improve their reading rate and comprehension and develop the skills to determine the author’s intent and theme and to recognize the techniques used by the author to deliver their message.

Language Arts 11 continues to develop students’ writing skills, emphasizing clear, logical writing patterns, word choice, and usage, as students write essays and begin to learn the techniques of writing research papers. Students continue to read works of literature by a diverse, representative set of voices, which may form the backbone of the writing assignments. Literary conventions and stylistic devices may receive greater emphasis than in previous courses.

AP LANG. & COMPOSITION A/B Grade 12 Prerequisite: None

Taken after AP Literature and following the College Board’s suggested curriculum designed to parallel college-level English courses, AP Language and Composition exposes students to prose written in a variety of periods, disciplines, and rhetorical contexts.

The course emphasizes the interaction of authorial purpose, intended audience, and the subject at hand, and through them, students learn to develop stylistic flexibility as they write compositions covering a variety of subjects that are intended for various purposes. Highly recommended but not required to take AP Literature before this class AP LIT & COMPOSITION A/B Grade 11-12 Prerequisite: LA 10, A Level work or Counselor approval

Credit: 1.0/Year Fall/Spring Dual Credits

Taken before AP Language and following the College Board’s suggested curriculum designed to parallel college-level English courses, AP English Literature and Composition enables students to develop critical standards for evaluating literature. Students study the language, character, action, and theme in works of recognized literary merit; enrich their understanding of connotation, metaphor, irony, syntax, and tone; and write compositions of their own (including literary analysis, exposition, argument, narrative, and creative writing).

Language Arts 12 blends composition and literature into a cohesive whole as students write critical and comparative analyses of selected literature, continuing to develop their language arts skills. The course description can be updated to say: "The geometry portion of this course emphasizes an abstract, formal approach to the study of geometry, focusing on topics such as properties of plane and solid figures; deductive methods of reasoning and use of logic; geometry as an axiomatic system including the study of postulates, theorems, and formal proofs; concepts of congruence, similarity, parallelism, perpendicularity, and proportion; rules or properties of triangles; and angle measurement in triangles. This year-long course is the first in a fouryear mathematics program that integrates functions, statistics, and geometry through real-world, applied contexts. In partnership with a co-requisite Personal Finance course, students use simulations and data analysis to explore financial decision-making, including budgeting, investing, credit, and independent living.

Emphasizing inquiry and problem-solving, the course builds mathematical reasoning and prepares students for college, career, and life. Math in Action 2A/2B; Alg 2, Data, Geom Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: Math in Action 1A/1B; Take with Co-Requisite Entrepreneurship Credit: 1.0/Year Fall/Spring Math in Action 2A/B is the second course in a four-year mathematics sequence and is equivalent to completing Algebra 2 and (Weighted grade honors course) Credit: 1.0/Year Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12 Fall/Spring Prerequisite: Take w/ Math in Action 1A/1B This is a co-requisite lab component of the Math in Action 1A/B course and must be taken simultaneously.

The lab will provide work-based learning simulations working in conjunction with the Math in Action course to fulfill CTE and Personal Finance graduation requirements and authentic application of the math curriculum.

Math in Action 2A/B is the second course in a four-year mathematics sequence and is equivalent to completing Alg 2 and Geometry. Students deepen their undersstanding of functions, statistics, and geometry through real-world applications, using algebra and data analysis to model financial and entrepreneurial scenarios such as taxes, credit, banking, and business operations.

Taken alongside a co-requisite Entrepreneurship course, this class emphasizes inquiry problem-solving, and decision-making to prepare students for college, careers, and life. (Weighted grade honors course) Co-Requisite Entrepreneurship 2A/2B

Prerequisite: Take w/ Math in Action 2A/2B

Credit: 1.0/Year Fall/Spring

This course is a co-requisite to Math in Action 2A/B and must be taken concurrently. It provides work-based learning simulations aligned with the Math in Action curriculum, emphasizing entrepreneurial application of mathematical concepts while fulfilling CTE graduation requirements. (Dual Credit, LBCC BA 260)

NOTE: Completion of Math in Action 1A/B & 2A/B & co-requisites will satisfy the Algebra 1, 2 and Geometry standards and two of the three math credits required for graduation. These courses can be followed by Precalculus (Math 111z and Math 112z, Dual Credit) and/or Explorations in Data Science. Students will also earn two CTE: Business credits. Students will concurrently earn 1 credit in CTE: Business through the required lab component. Students will earn required Personal Finance credit.

Mathematics Electives Construction Math A/B Grade: 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: Alg 1 and Geometry

Credit: 1.0/Year Fall/Spring

Construction Math is a hands-on, applied math course designed for students in Trades, Engineering, and Manufacturing pathways. Students develop essential skills in measurement, unit conversion, area, volume, ratios, and basic geometry—all within real-world construction and manufacturing contexts. The course emphasizes interpreting blueprints, estimating materials, and solving job-site problems, helping students build the foundational math skills required in careers such as carpentry, electrical work, welding, machining, and engineering technology.

Algebra 2 A/B Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: Alg 1, Geom., Data Sci

Credit: 1.0/Year Fall/Spring Honors avail.

Algebra II course topics may include field properties and theorems; set theory; operations with rational and irrational expressions; factoring of rational expressions; in-depth study of linear equations and inequalities; quadratic equations; solving systems of linear and quadratic equations; graphing of constant, linear, and quadratic equations; properties of higher-degree equations; and operations with rational and irrational exponents.

AP Calculus A/B Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: Precalculus or A level work

Credit: 1.0/Year Fall/Spring Dual Credit

Following the College Board’s suggested curriculum designed to parallel college-level calculus courses, AP Calculus AB provides students with an understanding of the concepts of calculus and experience with its methods and applications. These courses introduce calculus and include the following topics: functions, graphs, limits, and continuity; differential calculus (including definition, application, and computation of the derivative; derivative at a point; derivative as a function; and second derivatives); and integral calculus (including definite integrals and anti-differentiation).

AP Statistics A/B Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12 Prerequisite: Precalculus or A level work

Credit: 1.0/Year Fall/Spring Dual Credit

Following the College Board's suggested curriculum designed to parallel college-level statistics courses, AP Statistics courses introduce students to the major concepts and tools for collecting, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data. Students are exposed to four broad conceptual themes: exploring data, sampling and experimentation, anticipating patterns, and statistical inference.

Credit: 1.0/Year Fall/Spring

This course introduces the study of likely events and the analysis, interpretation, and presentation of quantitative data. Course topics generally include basic probability and statistics: discrete probability theory, odds and probabilities, probability trees, populations and samples, frequency tables, measures of central tendency, and presentation of data (including graphs). Course topics may also include normal distribution and measures of variability.

Preparing students for both career and college, this course is appropriate for those who have completed Alg 1, Geometry, and Data Science or Math in Action 2A/2B. It will further expand student expertise as data scientists through the utilization of various tools (that may include) Google Sheets, Python, Data Commons, and Tableau.

Students explore the full design‑to‑print pipeline: imagining a concept, modeling it in CAD software, preparing it for printing, and evaluating the final product.

From the nightly news to personal experiences with victimization, crime seems to be all around us. In this course, we will explore the field of criminology or the study of crime. In doing so, we will look at possible explanations for crime from psychological, biological, and sociological standpoints, explore the various types of crime and their consequences for society, and investigate how crime and criminals are handled by the criminal justice system.

English as a Second Language (ESL) is designed for the acquisition and rapid mastery of the English language, focusing on reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. W e l c o m e to ASCEND Your Career & Technical Education Program

Mr. John Mr. John Meyer Meyer At Oregon Charter Academy we understand there is not one educational path that fits the needs of all students.

We want to help students gain the skills they need as they move beyond high school and into college or a career. My name is John Meyer and I'm the ASCEND Administrator. Our Career and Technical Education (CTE) program is designed to provide ORCA students with career-relevant knowledge and skills. ASCEND currently has five career pathways that high school students can participate in: Computer Science, Business + Management, Hospitality & Tourism Management, Medical Science, and Animal Science. ASCEND students will be a part of a smaller cohort of students that will have a unique high school journey. While they will have some extra expectations during high school, they will have the close support of teachers that have worked as professionals in their chosen career fields. ASCEND students will have the opportunities for more hands-on learning and will be expected to take part in Work-Based Learning (WBL) opportunities during their senior year. They will also have opportunities to be a part of national student organizations while in high school. In many cases, ASCEND students will have opportunities to obtain industry certificates and participate in college-level courses in their field of study.

Mrs. Lacy brings 20+ years of experience to the role of ASCEND Advisory Teacher.

She has served as a teacher, college and career readiness facilitator, and internship coordinator. Mrs. Lacy cares deeply about students and their goals and believes strongly in the benefits of Career & Technical Education. Traveling with her family, reading and crafts are some of her favorite things.

Ms. Heigel began her career as a Silicon Valley software engineer after graduating from OSU with a BS in Computer Science.

After working 10+ years on large software programs for the Department of Defense, she decided to make a change to teaching.

After teaching middle and HS math for a number of years she moved into advising and managing dual credit. She is very excited be a part of the ASCEND Advisory team. She loves helping students realize their career path may have many twists and turns!

ASCEND is ORCA’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) Program, designed to provide ORCA students with customized career-relevant knowledge and skills.

Industry Certificates Students who choose to join ASCEND will have the opportunity to graduate high school with industry recognized credentials.

Career Technical Education

Organizations Organizations

We believe that Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSO's) are key to a strong Career and Technical Education program. CTSO's provide students with the opportunity to develop leadership skills and demonstrate occupational competency. Students can participate in activities, events, and competitions which provides further knowledge and skills per ACTEonline.org. We currently offer four pathway CTSOs: HOSA is an organization for future healthcare professionals and leaders. The purpose of HOSA is to develop the leadership abilities of its student members through a program of motivation, awareness, competition, awards, scholarships, and recognition at the local, state, and national levels. Students who join HOSA can choose to compete against other members in events that test their knowledge and skill at the annual HOSA State Conference. Students may qualify for the national competition as well.

Future Farmers of America (FFA) is a dynamic youth organization that changes lives and prepares members for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. FFA develops members' potential and helps them discover their talent through hands-on experiences, which give members the tools to achieve real-world success.

FFA is an intracurricular student organization for those interested in agriculture and leadership. It is one of the three components of agricultural education.

SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. We help each student excel. A nonprofit national education

association,

serves

middle-school,

high-school

college/postsecondary students preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations. SkillsUSA supports all pathways in their professional skills.

The National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) is an educational non-profit that exists to honor, recognize, and empower students and teachers in Career & Technical Education. As the honor society for Career & Technical Education, NTHS serves over 100,000 active members annually in both secondary and postsecondary chapters across country.

NTHS honors the achievements of top CTE students, provides scholarships annually, and strives to help connect education and industry to build a highly skilled workforce.

The DECA experience starts in the classroom where students learn business concepts in preparation for college and careers. A powerful instructional component, DECA brings the classroom to life by empowering the teacher-advisor to make learning relevant with educational programs that integrate into classroom instruction, apply learning, connect to business and promote competition. The successful integration of each of these four interconnected components, also part of DECA’s guiding principles, results in a strong program that produces college- and career-ready students.

What to expect from your practicum

During your practicum, students engage in a variety of professional work activities designed to provide a total learning experience where students can apply knowledge from their written learning objectives. In addition, students will reflect upon their experiences and integrate their experience material into ASCEND pathway coursework. Practicum provides the student with an excellent opportunity to self-evaluate their career goals and experience the workplace environment and cultural norms.

Academic credit is not given for practicum experience alone. Rather, the work-related experience is combined with curricula and classroom course requirements. We believe the best educational experiences arise when learners are actively involved in constructing their own meaning and knowledge. Thus, our practicum experiences are focused on the following principle: learning is meant to be equally as dependent on practical experience as well as academic achievement.

Ever wanted to work with animals? Don’t think it’s a possibility? Students will learn that working with animals is not just playing with kittens and puppies. You will be introduced to diagnostic tests, diseases, treatments, cleaning, and hygiene. Students can learn what it takes to be successful as a veterinary assistant. As a part of ASCEND, you will also be exposed to personal growth topics such as professionalism, teamwork, record keeping, and time management.

ASCEND Animal Science students will take a variety of courses throughout their high school career. Students will also be required to complete a Animal Science Internship their senior year.

This is a review class, where students will work to master material from past courses including Animal Science/Veterinary Assisting A and B. Students will also have the opportunity to take multiple review assessments and two mini practice exams in this class.

Mrs.Jessica Morgan Mrs. Morgan started learning about agriculutral and animal science industries in high school where she was very active in FFA (Future Farmers of America). After high school Mrs. Morgan earned her BS in Animal Science from Colorado State University. After college she worked in a veterinary supply company for a specialty veterinary hospital. Mrs. Morgan then took several years off from working to start her family and decided to go back to school to become an Elementary School Teacher. She earned her teaching license and second Bachelors Degree from Western Governors University. Her first teaching position was as a substitute teacher for ORCA. Mrs. Morgan realized after subbing in the Veterinary Science pathway that she really missed being a part of the agricultural world! Now she is excited to bring her love of animal science and agriulture to her students!

Since 2004, she has served as a teacher, committed to developing students both academically and physically. Mrs. Bender has been teaching since 2001, beginning her career after earning both a Bachelor of Science in Health Promotion and Fitness Management and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Southern Oregon University. She also holds an Associate of Arts in Science degree from College of the Siskiyous, where she attended for two years and competed in collegiate softball. Since joining ORCA in 2007, she has taught Health, Physical Education, Nutrition & Foods, Foods and Cooking, and Intro to Cooking. Mrs. Hay strives to improve computer science throughout related to Oregon Career Technicial Education programs and has served on the Oregon Department of Education Consultant group in 23-24 to establish a Computer State Wide Plan for K-12 education to bring computer science to all.

I've got 15 years experience teaching video, digital art, graphic design and audio, and 10 of those teaching creative coding with a focus on animation, motion graphics and game making. I've worked extensively with the Scratch, ScratchEd, and Processing teams, and have tons of connections to the indie gaming community in Oregon and beyond. Your ASCEND teacher: Mr. Michael Jones I love learning about and teaching STEM topics (science, technology, engineering, and math). Teaching middle school and high school since 2011, with a focus on math and computer programming, I am excited to be part of ORCA’s ASCEND team and see where it will take us! Prior to teaching, I spent ten years flying helicopters in the US Army and managing military personnel and assets, so I have a lot of real-world experience administering avionics systems, hardware and networks, and many technical software applications. Over the years, I have earned both a B.S. and a Masters in Engineering in Computer Science with a focus on interface program design, along with another Master’s degree in Geology & Geophysics, and continue to take graduate courses every year to keep my learning skills fresh. In my free time I like to play sports and computer games, coach, fish, and travel with family. I also joke around a lot. Recommend your favorite game, book or movie to me!

Medical Science Pathway students will leave high school well prepared to enter a variety of healthcare careers. Students who complete this pathway often use their newfound healthcare knowledge and experience in one of two main ways: 1) Students may choose to go straight into the healthcare workforce as a CCMA-NHA right after high school, or 2) Students may leverage their coursework, internship experience and healthcare certifications to gain acceptance into competitive future healthcare training opportunities. In ASCEND, we value both of these options equally. Thus, this program is built to be foundational to a myriad of healthcare career choices, such as phlebotomist, EKG technician, physical therapist, nurse or even physician. We encourage anyone interested in a career in healthcare to come learn and explore with us.

During their coursework, Medical Sciences Pathway students will learn about human diseases, disorders, diagnostic tests and treatments; how to ethically and professionally act in a variety of healthcare settings; how to perform and interpret routine medical exams; how to don and doff personal protective equipment; and how to perform CPR/AED/First Aid. On top of this coursework, students will have numerous opportunities to visit local clinics for tours, talk to healthcare professionals during synchronous video lessons, and learn about a wide-variety of healthcare career choices.

Students will learn the meaning of medical terms by learning how to break down medical words into their prefixes, suffixes, and roots. This class is ordered by body systems.

Students will learn about human diseases, diagnostic tools and treatments as they relate to each body system.

Fall term will cover the skeletal system, muscular system; nervous system; blood, lymphatic and immune systems and cardiovascular system.

Spring term will cover the respiratory system, digestive system, special senses (eyes and ears), endocrine system, urinary system and reproductive systems.

This course introduces students to the historical crimes that lead to the creation of formal bioethic codes, including The Nuremberg Code and The Belmont Report.

Students will read these codes and learn how to apply the four principles of bioethics — beneficence, nonmaleficence, justice and autonomy — to a variety of clinical case studies. We will also discuss legal and professional rights and responsibilities within healthcare settings. Other topics include tort law, HIPAA, Medicare, Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act.

Offered in in-person, virtual, or hybrid formats, this practicum emphasizes hands-on learning and professional skill development. Students may also have the opportunity to earn industry-recognized certifications such as CCMA (NHA), CEHRS (NHA), EMR, FEMA, Bloodborne Pathogens, or AHA Basic Life Support (BLS).

Your ASCEND Master teacher: Dr. Elizabeth "Beth" Washak

Dr. Elizabeth “Beth” Washak, DC, NREMT holds a Bachelor of Science degree and a Doctorate of Chiropractic from Palmer College of Chiropractic. She is nationally certified as an Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) and has additional clinical experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), a role she held throughout her undergraduate and doctoral studies.

With more than fifteen years of professional experience, Dr. Washak has served in multiple clinical capacities, including as the clinical director of her own chiropractic practice. Her areas of expertise include patient care and education, medical coding and billing, and medical documentation and annotation. She is also a certified Basic Life Support (BLS) instructor with the American Heart Association (AHA).

Your ASCEND teacher: Mrs. Amy Lee Mrs. Lee began her career as an athletic trainer after graduating from Oregon State University. While managing a physical therapy clinic, she went back to school to become a licensed massage therapist. After a few years, she began teaching massage therapy classes and discovered her love for teaching. Mrs. Lee completed her Master of Education degree through Grand Canyon University. She is excited to share her knowledge about the amazing human body, her personal experiences, and all the ways to be involved in the healthcare field with her students!

Your ASCEND teacher: Mrs. Kellen Sherwood

Mrs. Sherwood has loved learning for as long as she can remember, and developed an interest in science and heath in high school. After graduating from UC Irvine with a BA in Philosophy and a BS in Biological Sciences, she became certified as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) to gain experience in the medical field. Mrs. Sherwood was a Medical Assistant for five years. Her passion for education was rekindled and she earned a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) at George Fox University. Mrs. Sherwood is excited to combine these areas of interest, and help students discover their own paths toward fulfilling careers.

In today’s society, crime and deviant behavior are often one of the top concerns of society members. From the nightly news to personal experiences with victimization, crime seems to be all around us. You will look at possible explanations for crime from psychological, biological, and sociological standpoints, explore the various types of crime and their consequences for society, and investigate how crime and criminals are handled by the criminal justice system.

This course introduces students to the study of human behavior in society. It provides an overview of sociology, generally including (but not limited to) topics such as: social institutions and norms, socialization and social change, and the relationships among individuals and groups in society.

Mr. Dan West

Mr. West is a first generation Oregonian. He has lived in the Willamette Valley his entire life. He developed a love for history in his early years through learning the life stories of several historical figures.

Additionally, he learned a lot as a child about the Criminal Justice field from his father, who served as a sheriff’s deputy here in Oregon. After attending an asynchronous high school himself, he then went on to get a Bachelors in History and a Masters in Education, both from the University of Oregon. A couple years later, Mr. West began teaching with ORCA. He has been a part of the social studies department for two decades. He still has a great love for both history and the criminal justice field and is excited each year to work with students who are also passionate about those subjects.

This course introduces the study of likely events and the analysis, interpretation, and presentation of quantitative data. Mr. Carl Yao

Mr. Yao grew up in China and moved to the United States in 2000. He earned master’s degrees in computer science, education, and mathematics education from Portland State University. These degrees transformed his life, and he is passionate about helping his students achieve their own educational goals.

Mr. Yao has been teaching math at Oregon Charter Academy since 2009. He believes some of his greatest teachers are his students and values every conversation and learning opportunity they bring to the classroom.

His enthusiasm for mathematics and dedication to student success are evident in everything he does.

In his free time, Mr. Yao officiates basketball, soccer, football, and lacrosse. He believes that staying active is just as important as earning degrees — a healthy body supports a healthy mind.

Mrs. Crystal Reed Crystal Reed is a high school mathematics teacher with 17 years of experience helping students build confidence and enjoy learning math. She earned her degree in General Science with minors in Mathematics and Spanish from Oregon State University and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Concordia University.

As Math Team Lead, Crystal strives to make math feel accessible and exciting. She enjoys using technology to design lessons that engage students so seamlessly, they often don’t even realize they’re learning math. Outside the classroom, she coaches volleyball and track and cheers on her three children at their sporting events.

Dr. Cynthia Lofts I am so excited to be part of the ASCEND team and I am looking forward to seeing you in my classes. Most of my life I have owned my own business. I have experience in hospitality, tourism, managing employees and operations, as well as graphic and website design. I graduated with a BA in Economics from University of Washington and received my MAT Secondary Mathematics from University of Southern California. I completed my Doctorate from Grand Canyon University in Education. I began my teaching career in 2017. This year I will be teaching mathematics and CTE courses.

I also hold an Associate of Arts in Science degree from College of the Siskiyous, where I attended for two years and competed in collegiate softball.

Mr. Shawn Bundy Shawn Bundy holds a Master’s degree in Science Education from Oregon State University and has spent the past 14 years teaching at Oregon Charter Academy. His passion for the natural environment has taken him across the globe—from the rainforests of South America to the coral reefs of Australia—where he’s explored some of the planet’s most unique ecosystems. In the classroom, Shawn loves helping students discover how the world works through science and inquiry. He’s especially excited to work with students interested in environmental science, ecology, or natural resource management.

Mrs. Jessica Heisley Mrs. Heisley has a Bachelor of Science in Zoology and a Master of Education in Secondary Education, both from Northern Arizona University. During her years in college, she worked as a seasonal Fisheries Technician for the US Forest Service, where she led a team to survey local streams and fish populations. She also spent several years as a Laboratory Technician at a forensic toxicology lab. After graduating with her Master's, Mrs. Heisley began her teaching career and has taught various high school science courses, both in-person and virtually. Since starting her virtual teaching position, she's also completed an E-Learning Instructional Design and Development Certificate from Oregon State University.

Mr. Michael Rodriguez Mr. Rodriguez’ lifelong passion for science and learning began in his youth. He began his career in science in 1989 in the then-emerging field of ecological restoration, working for a firm that restored hardwood swamps in phosphate mines. Building on this experience, he pursued an MS in forest science and ecology. He moved to Coos Bay in 1994 to work for the Bureau of Land Management to do restoration of salmon habitat. He began his teaching career in 2001 and has been teaching for ORCA since 2013. In 2023, he joined a team of scientists from OSU on an expedition to Antarctica to do education outreach. Students in his classes benefit from direct engagement with practicing scientists, frequently invited by Mr. Rodriguez to share their stories and expertise.
