SUMMER 2026
WHO WE ARE
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT THE BOARD
Fellow Members:
Let me welcome you to another glorious summer on LBI. I hope and trust that you all had a safe and peaceful offseason. As we approach another summer on our beautiful island, I wanted to recount what we accomplished over the past twelve months and update you about what we have in store for the summer of 2026.
As you know, the roof and HVAC project for the camp buildings was the single biggest capital project undertaken by the LBIF in at least 25 years. This year, we will be finishing those buildings by replacing the decking and the windows. That should sustain that entire portion of that our complex for the next 20-30 years. That project would not have been possible without the extreme generosity and support of the members who contributed to our Annual Appeal, as well as the interest earned on our endowment fund (which has been funded to a significant extent through a generous donation from Ken Stein and Sandy Strine). The self-sustaining nature of those gifts has enabled us to execute that two-year capital project without having to use operating income and without having to incur a nickel of debt. I am incredibly grateful to all of you who helped make that possible.
As we enter 2026, we are seeing:
• Continued membership growth, including our Blai and tennis memberships.
• Thriving summer camp enrollment because of expanded offerings and contemporary curricula.
• Expanded business and community relationships;
• New grant awards, including awards from the Ocean County Cultural Heritage, William S Paley Foundation, New Jersey Cultural Trust, Ocean County Tourism and Grant for mar keting, and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.
• A record number of art exhibitions, films, concerts and social events:
o May: Works on Paper 2026
o June 9-14: Lighthouse International Film Festival
o July: Coast, a juried exhibition
o July 11: One Night Only- a gala event supporting our LBI Lifeguard community and showcasing their talents in photography
o August 5: The House Tour
o August: +Member +Student +Faculty Exhibition
o September: Plein Air Plus 2026
o Fabulous fun family programs
o Children’s specialty camps, including Cheerleading, Theater Camp, Contemporary Dance, Music Camp, Fishing Camp, and Tennis Camp, to name just a few.
In addition, for those of you who play tennis and pickleball, Brett and Tom continue to bring a real passion and member centric attitude to our facilities. In an effort to expand our pickleball experience, Brett and Tom have hired Madison McKay as our new pickleball head pro instructor to help grow that part of the recreational offerings. I am expecting they will enable us to expand lessons, tournaments, casual round robins, etc. Their continued focus on the member experience makes the LBIF the premier tennis operation on the Island.
I have previously described our Ceramics Studio as a “hidden gem,” with its state-of-the-art kilns and facilities for experienced and beginner potters alike. The expanded offerings and additional staff have made the studio a far more welcoming environment. I want to encourage beginners and experts alike to stop in to learn more about this wonderful art form and the programming available to our members.
My main priority for 2026 remains growth; growth in our membership; growth in our fundraising; and growth in our offerings.

Our members are the lifeblood of the Foundation. We can’t sustain this organization without a growing and vibrant membership. And that just doesn’t mean more dues. It means members that want to come to the Foundation to enjoy all that it has to offer, whether cultural, educational, athletic or otherwise. If visitors see a place with a lot going on, that is a welcoming community that provides quality services and enjoyable programming, they will want to be here. That’s how we will grow our membership.
So I would ask each of you to encourage your friends and neighbors to become Foundation members−especially young families that can become generational contributors to our LBIF community. Educate them about all the Foundation has to offer for people of all ages. Bring them to the Foundation to visit. Invite them to attend a concert, visit an art show, play tennis or pickleball, or try their hand at ceramics. Direct them to our new and improved website: lbifoundation.org so that they can see for themselves all that we have to offer. I know that if we can engage with them at some level, we can persuade them to join us as members.
Fundraising is critical to the sustainability of the Foundation. Membership dues, tennis and camp revenue contribute to our operating budget, but capital improvements are only possible through the generosity of our members. We sincerely thank those families who have made gifts to the Foundation in addition to their yearly dues and we hope you will continue to keep us in mind during our next Annual Appeal.
Finally, as mentioned earlier, the LBIF now has a healthy foundation that we can use to fund capital projects that otherwise would be unaffordable from operating income. But these endowment funds are restricted, meaning that we are free to use the annual income generated by the endowment but not the principal. Thus, in an effort to continue to grow the corpus (and thus generate more income that can be used for capital projects), I would encourage each of you to consider making a donation to the endowment and to consider the LBIF endowment as a potential recipient of a future bequest.
As I look forward to the 2026 summer season, I would encourage and challenge you do something, whether large or small, to ensure an even brighter future for the Foundation. Everyone can contribute in some way, whether financially or in less tangible ways.
I am extremely proud of what we have been able to accomplish over the past few years. We have returned the Foundation to a stable fiscal footing and I remain confident that we are well positioned to flourish for years to come. Here’s wishing you all a safe and healthy 2026 and another wonderful LBI summer.

HISTORY
Founded in 1948 by Boris Blai, the LBIF is an outstanding community cultural center. Blai, a student of the sculptor Auguste Rodin, and the founding Dean of the Tyler School of Art, Temple University, envisioned a unique facility that would foster individuals, and their talents, while enjoying summertime at the Jersey shore.
Boris Blai was born in 1893 in Rivne, Russia, and received his early training in sculpture and painting at the Kiev and Leningrad Imperial Academies. In 1912 Blai arrived in Paris to study at the Ecole des Beaux Arts with Emile-Antoine Bourdelle and Auguste Rodin, later becoming an assistant to the master sculptor, Rodin. Blai also studied bronze casting and portrait painting in Munich. After coming to America, in 1927 Blai secured his first teaching position at the Oak Lane Country Day School in Philadelphia. In 1935 he founded the Tyler School of Art, Temple University’s degree granting art school located in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania where he remained Dean until his retirement in 1960.
The LBIF has continued Blai’s vision by offering thousands of classes, workshops, exhibitions, and educational programs to the community. Since its first season, the LBIF has committed itself to the enhancement of the creative arts and the physical sciences. Though it began as a seasonal operation, the LBIF has grown into a year-round organization providing a place for learning, free expression, new experiences, and the exchange of ideas and understanding.
Celebrating LBIF’s 75th anniversary in 2023, we recognized our past Presidents, who along with their board of trustees, staff, members, volunteers, and supporters have enabled the LBIF to remain the cultural anchor of this region. To mark this milestone, we recognized these Presidents who gave of their time, vision and wisdom to sustain LBIF and its priceless 22-acre campus.
We thank Julie Berkowitz for her book, The Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts & Sciences - A History: 1947 - 2014, available for purchase at LBIF.

TO OUR COMMUNITY
LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
SUBHEADER
To Our Community,
Over the past seventy-eight years, LBIF has grown from a seasonal summer retreat to a year-round center open to the public. Our programs continue to expand while aligning with the arts, sciences, and cultural pursuits. This is such an exciting time in LBIF’s history! As we prepare for our 80th Birthday in 2028, we are planning to build for the next decade. Please join us to realize the full potential of our community as we innovate, expand, and grow as a place of excellence with exceptional programs and opportunities for this region.
To the dedicated work of the many Chairs and Committee members and the hundreds of volunteers who make all the events and programs possible, thank you! To our wonderful, creative, talented, and dedicated staff who make our brilliant summer schedule filled with outstanding programming for adults and children exciting every year, thank you! To our valued Business community and partners, our non-profit partners in the sciences and the arts who help us build a stronger community through our shared interests, thank you! And finally, to our members and their families, both our longtime members and our new members, who keep LBIF alive and thriving each year because of their commitment, involvement, support and love of the LBIF, thank you!
A few highlights to add to the President’s letter of accomplishments, upgrades, improvements to our facilities and changes in operations:
LBIF’s new fiscal year is now aligned with the calendar! Memberships going forward will begin January 1 and expire December 31. Current members will enjoy three additional months of membership in 2026!
LBIF received a substantial grant from the NJ Cultural Trust in 2025 to implement Salesforce, a significant CRM upgrade (Customer Relationship Management). Considered to be the gold standard, its capabilities will improve our ability to expand our outreach.
Our Art Exhibitions are once again selected by world renowned scholars and curators in the visual arts. Our Speakers Series hosts scholars both in historical and contemporary art who will share intimate and personal presentations. We are launching our varied programs in Performing Arts with a special performance from the Metropolitan Chorus Artists, and we continue our “Series at Seven” concerts with jazz, rock, pop, Broadway, and more. This season we are introducing an outstanding new magic show sure to please the whole family.
Our beautiful new website and our expanded social media presence will allow LBIF to engage with our audience year-round.
We are beginning to re-imagine our natural landscape outdoors starting with the repair of our marsh walkways that have deteriorated from years of repeated storms. Our 2028 goal is the building of an amphitheater, sculpture garden, and to enhance the views of our bay. Thanks to a generous donation received this year, we hope to realize these projects by our eightieth birthday celebration. These projects will also afford naming opportunities as part of our fundraising efforts.
Our community is our lifeblood, year-round. What helps sustain the Foundation each year is your continued support and involvement. I welcome your ideas and suggestions. Your contributions, experience, and abilities, and those of our talented members and friends, are what makes the Foundation vibrant. Please feel free to contact me!
These enduring values of shared interests strengthen this community in a manner that only the arts and sciences can bring. Now and for future generations, please join me to continue to build a bright, exciting, innovative, and inspired future.
My very best wishes to all for a wonderful summer,

Daniella Kerner Executive Director

THE ARTS
LBIF’s main gallery is the hub of Arts Programming at the LBIF. Not only does the main gallery host exhibitions that are free and open to the public year-round, the gallery also transforms into the perfect space for concerts, performances, public speaking engagements, films, and celebrations.
LBIF’s gallery exhibitions showcase new directions in the visual arts, enable arts education, introduce new mediums, and offer a broad variety of subject matter for patrons of the arts. Exhibits range from internationally known artists working in a wide range of media, to community-based shows highlighting the work of the talented local community and its artists.
Accompanied by the building’s incredible acoustics, the gallery stage is home to LBIF’s Series at Seven Summer Concerts. Concert goers are submersed in a unique, intimate experience of music surrounded by art.
Speaking engagements by renowned artists, curators, filmmakers, and public figures take the stage and engage audiences with their expertise on a variety of subject matters.
Once a year, the main gallery is transformed into a movie theater when LBIF collaborates to host the annual acclaimed Lighthouse International Film Festival and offers other film festivals such as the Manhattan Shorts and Oscar Shorts. Independent films are screened year-round adding to our unique showcase for all the arts.
During the holiday season, the main gallery becomes the beacon for small businesses when LBIF hosts our annual Holiday Market and Small Business Saturday Celebration as a kickoff to the winter gift giving season.
LBIF’s Arts Programming is made possible by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts and the Cultural and Heritage Commission of Ocean County, New Jersey and The Ocean County Board of Commissioners, and New Jersey Cultural Trust.

EXPLORE OUR CAMPUS

THE NATURE TRAIL

THE NATURE TRAIL AT THE LBIF WAS CREATED TO PROVIDE A UNIQUE AND PEACEFUL EXPERIENCE FOR VISITORS OF THE LAST WILD BAYFRONT PROPERTY ON LONG BEACH ISLAND. AS THE LARGEST (PRIVATELY OWNED) PRESERVED SALTMARSH ON THE ISLAND, IT IS HOME TO A DIVERSE ARRAY OF WILDLIFE AND PROVIDES CRITICAL ECOSYSTEM SERVICES TO OUR COASTAL COMMUNITY. FROM A BARRIER ISLAND PERSPECTIVE, THE SALTMARSH IS OUR FOUNDATION.
THE LBIF IS PROUD TO CONTINUE OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CONSERVE WILDLIFE FOUNDATION OF NEW JERSEY (CWF) THAT WILL HELP SUPPORT AND STRENGTHEN OUR SCIENCE BASED INITIATIVES WITH EMPHASIS ON RARE WILDLIFE, INCLUDING WILDLIFE SURVEYS, HABITAT MANAGEMENT, AND PUBLIC OUTREACH. ACTIVITIES INCLUDE MIGRATORY AND NESTING BIRD SURVEYS, NORTHERN DIAMONDBACK TERRAPIN MONITORING, AND WILDLIFE HABITAT ENHANCEMENT.
CWF WILL ENHANCE OUR SUMMER CAMPER’S EXPERIENCE BY PROVIDING A WILDLIFE-FOCUSED PRESENTATION EACH WEEK, LED BY BIOLOGISTS WHO CARRY OUT THE ORGANIZATION’S MISSION; TO PRESERVE RARE AND AT-RISK WILDLIFE IN NEW JERSEY.
IN THIS PARTNERSHIP, WE WILL WORK TOGETHER TO ENSURE THAT LBI IS A SUSTAINABLE HOME FOR VULNERABLE WILDLIFE SPECIES, AND A PLACE WHOSE RESIDENTS AND VISITORS ARE ENGAGED IN THE NATURAL WORLD AROUND THEM.
ESTUARIES AND THEIR SURROUNDING WETLANDS HELP STABILIZE SHORELINES, PROTECT INLAND HABITATS, AND DEFEND HUMAN PROPERTY FROM COASTAL FLOODING AND SEA LEVEL RISE. THEY ALSO PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN REDUCING CLIMATE CHANGE, AS THEY ACT AS A CARBON SINK. WHEN COASTAL WETLANDS ARE DAMAGED, THEIR ABILITY TO SEQUESTER CARBON CAN BE LOST. IN THE COMING YEARS AND DECADES, OUR SALT MARSHES WILL BE ON THE FRONT LINE OF A RISING SEA. EVERY ACTION TO REDUCE OUR ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT TODAY, WILL INCREASE THE CHANCE THAT PLACES LIKE THIS WILL BE AROUND FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS TO VISIT AND ADMIRE.

SUMMER CAMP 2026
MISSION STATEMENT

Since 1948, the LBIF has honored the vision of our founder Boris Blai, nurturing generations of families through children’s programming. Boris, an artist, elementary school teacher and founder of Temple University’s Tyler School of Art, envisioned a not-for-profit retreat here in Loveladies where artists could immerse themselves in the beauty the island has to offer. Our campers enjoy this gift of 22 acres of indoor and outdoor classrooms alongside our staff of professional artists, scientists and teachers. Here, campers create lasting friendships that form as easily as sandcastles, and families return year after year, joining a legacy of lifelong connection to our special place.
The LBIF offers summer camp programs for nine weeks from June 22, 2026 through August 21, 2026. Our week-long programs offer small-group art or science camps in the morning complemented by afternoon tennis, surf and specialty camps, allowing campers to dive deeper into their passions. Programs are a-lacart, with 10% discount for members.
Staying for the whole day? Join our Lunch Bunch!

Campers learn about safety, ocean awareness, paddling techniques, positioning, and surfing etiquette. Boys and Girls are grouped together for a week of beach fun with our coed team of enthusiastic coaches. Campers meet at our surf shop for a meet and greet and to get sized for wetsuits each day. Each day begins with some basic yoga for surfing stretches followed by the safety and new water skills of the day before we walk to the beach to test out those skills and get our campers water-ready! Monday and Tuesday students are introduced to ocean safety and how to manage their equipment so that riding waves and paddling out are done in a safe manner. An experienced lifeguard will visit the kids at the shop to talk about the importance of swimming techniques, rip currents, and water safety. An experienced rep from the Surfrider Foundation will speak to the campers about the protection and enjoyment of our beach and ocean.
Wednesday and Thursday “We ride the waves!” Campers meet at the selected surf shop to get fitted for wetsuits and then head to the beach to meet their coaches.
LBI Surfing coaches help students apply those skills to the ocean in our tested and proven model of surfing success!
One-on-one instruction while in the water with fun beach games, bodyboarding, relay races, and much more!!
